This week we're discussing every album by the Geto Boys. If you thought 2 Live Crew was too family friendly, then Geto Boys have just the right amount of smut and over the top violence to satisfy you. Made up of Willie D, Scarface, and the 3'8" Bushwick Bill, Geto Boys helped pioneer gangsta rap, in addition to their own brand of violent and cartoonish misogyny. But these days, most would probably recognize them from their tracks featured in Mike Judge's Office Space. Time to grab a baseball bat and your least favorite copy machine.Closing track: "Gangster of Love" from Grip It! Houston, 1985. You might know Bushwick Bill as a member of the iconic Houston rap group The Geto Boys, but his contributions to rap music, his role in the debates over free speech in the 1990s, and his overall influence are far more substantial than you probably realize. In this episode, we welcome Charles Hughes back to the show to discuss his new book Why Bushwick Bill Matters (Univ. of Texas Press) and to get a better understanding of the challenges and triumphs that shaped one of rap history's most influential artists. Dr. Charles Hughes is the Director of the Lynne and Henry Turley Memphis Center at Rhodes College. His previous books include Country Soul: Making Music and Making Race in the American South which Rolling Stone named one of the Best Music Books of 2015. You can hear our previous conversation with Charles in episode #25 The History of Country and Soul Music in the American South w/ Charles Hughes. This week, we review the monster 1991 album We Can't Be Stopped from the legendary Geto Boys. This is the 3rd studio album from the group and among their most successful. This is thanks, in part, to their smash song Mind's Playing Tricks On Me. Scarface, Willie D and Bushwick Bill push the boundaries of rap with their subject matter, making this a Southern Hip-hop classic. https://instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igshid=MzMyNGUyNmU2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=aejMdD

Scarface is undeniably one of the innovators of southern gangsta rap, intellectual rap, thought provoking, soul moving rap. You may know Scarface as the elite emcee in the Houston, Texas rap group The Geto Boys with Bushwick Bill and WIllie D. If you're of a certain age you may only know them for being the musical bed to the iconic scene in Office Space. Let me tell you, if that's the only reason you know this man, then your mind is playing tricks on you. Scarface paints a vivid picture with each of his words. Scarface or Face or Brother Mob or your favorite rappers, favorite rapper is worth the time and attention of your ears. And yes, Scarface is the reason the phrase, your favorite rappers, favorite rapper exists. Thank you Scarface for everything you've contributed to the world and more specifically hip hop. Thank you, and thank you for listening to this episode of hip hop history. Please like, subscribe and leave a review where possible. Thank you.
I have a friend who was part of a famous hip-hop group called "The Geto Boys." Back in the day, Willie D and his partners Scarface and Bushwick Bill had a famous song called "My Minds Playing Tricks on me." I thought about this song when I saw the stock market's unbelievable behavior this morning. Upon the release of a highly anticipated inflation report, the market collapsed, with the Dow dropping over 500 points in an instant. At that moment, I knew that my students and I would be in for a rough day. Then, by noon, the market hadn't just clawed back all of it's losses, it had already sprung forward by another 800 points on top of that. That's like a basketball team being down by 25 points and winning by 40. While this major market swing can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, I'll start with this simple message: Don't believe it. The story regarding why the market swung in this way is about as flimsy as the one told by Jussie Smollett when he went out for a Subway sandwhich at 2 am in Chicago. Some believe that this major market rally occured because an overheated Consumer Price Index report signals that inflation could be peaking and eventually headed south. Are you serious? What kind of crack does one have to smoke to believe that this story has merit? To be clear, the argument basically says that because inflation went up higher than expected, this means that it's almost surely headed down. This is not true. Use this as an opportunity to sell or shave assets off the top. There's nothing to believe about any of this. With that said, I broke the issue down today on The Black Financial Channel. Also, you're welcome to study stock options with me and my students tonight at DrBoycePrime.com. Sincerely, Dr Boyce Watkins
