How does your website impact your speaking opportunities and the fees you can charge? More than you may think. If you want to be seen as an authority in your field and charge premium rates, as both a speaker and an entrepreneur, your branding needs to reflect that. This includes your website, your marketing materials, your graphics, and your content. This may be controversial, but I’m going to say it: DIY is not your BFF. When you come to a place in your speaking and business when you need to level up, you need to bring in experts to help you. As a speaker, if you want to get paid gigs and bigger stages, how you present yourself online and in your materials needs to reflect your value and build trust with event organizers. You think doing things yourself is saving you money, but it’s really not. It’s costing you money: lost time, lost productivity, and actual lost revenue from prospective clients who don’t convert. I came to this point about a year ago and I’ve been seeking out experts since then: hiring a high-level VA, a professional podcast editor, a sales coach, another speaking coach to work with our clients, most recently a website designer/developer, and soon a marketing strategist. My guest today is Melanie (Mel) Richards, the founder of Modern Traction, a web development and content marketing company. I hired Mel earlier this year to design and build the new website for https://www.speakingyourbrand.com. This was a big decision for me. My previous two businesses had been web development companies, so I had always created my own websites. But, that was no longer my identity or my business. And it was no longer a good use of my time - I needed the expert guidance and skillset that Mel and her team provided. Whether you know you need a new look for your brand and website, are happy with what you currently have, or perhaps just need a refresh, you’ll hear tips you can use to position yourself as a premium speaker. In this episode, you’ll learn: How Mel got interested in design (and what a 4-ton printing press has to do with it) What elements make a great website that works for you How your website can be your most powerful marketing and sales tool Where to start when working on your website (this may surprise you) What to look for when hiring a designer What the impact has been on my business since launching the new site How we decided on the branding for the new website (this can help you with yours too) About My Guest: Having debuted her career in web design and development in 1999, Melanie (Mel) Richards is a highly experienced and award-winning art director and digital strategist. She’s sought out for her knowledge on branding, design, UX, conversion strategies and the technologies that make it all possible. Her dedication to helping her clients get more traction with their business drives her to create solutions that meet her client’s objectives and expectations so they see a healthy ROI after working with her. In her spare time, Melanie can be found reading non-fiction, hosting a lively dinner with friends, or pushing her boundaries through adventure sports. Living in the small mountain town of Squamish, B.C., the outdoors offer her an endless playground where she enjoys kiteboarding, mountain biking and skiing with friends and family. Mel McShane has spent well over a decade at renowned design agency Wolff Olins and consults with executives around the world on their brand strategies. Take a peek at Mel Wells’ Instagram feed and you’ll see instantly why I love talking with her and following her amazing journey of self-love. As an actress at 18 on a UK soap opera, Mel was exposed early on to the pressures of the performing arts world and keeping a “thin” figure. This pressure eventually led to eating disorder behavior and she remained in that self-described black hole for seven years. Shortly after that time, she left that world, rediscovered her self-worth and rewrote her mindset. She now helps other women get out of the diet culture and change their relationship with food and their bodies. Because as Mel describes, by healing our relationships with food we can also change our relationships with our souls. As a person who’s struggled with my relationship with food and my body, I related on all fronts of Mel’s messages. There really is a parallel between healing that relationship and using that same knowledge in all areas of your life. It ultimately comes down to loving yourself and giving yourself freedom. This was such a heartfelt conversation and I can’t wait to hear what you resonated with the most. -- Question Highlights: What got you started on your path? What was it that finally broke the cycle for you? What do you tell someone who feels stuck? How do you calm those fight or flight thoughts? When you get psychological cravings what can you do? What does it actually look like when you support other women? What does being authentic mean for you in your life? What are some tools you’re relying on to get you through your recent move? What journey do you want to take women on at your Self Love Summit? Did you have any limiting beliefs around creating relationships with women? Tell me about your new book, Hungry for More. In This Episode We Talk about: How Mel healed her relationship with food and her body (and soul) Connecting to your bigger vision Choosing movement that feels good and isn’t a punishment Trusting your body and that it wants you to live a healthy life What to do when you get psychological cravings – that aren’t hunger related Pursuing a fulfilled life Being in integrity with your values Letting go of old beliefs and obtaining new ones The inevitability of change and growth Mel’s TedXTalk and how she reframed her disappointment when they couldn’t publish it online due to audio difficulties The importance of sharing the things that go wrong And so much more… Quotes “When you’re able to trust your body’s natural intuition it helps you tune in with your soul’s intuition.” “If we want to feel free, then freedom is what we have to choose.” “Choosing more control won’t get you more freedom.” “The more I love myself, the more I’m able to lift other women up and genuinely mean it from the heart.” “Be willing to take the masks off and just be completely comfortable with who you are and where you’re at.” -- Mel Wells is a Certified Health Coach, Eating Psychology Coach, International Speaker and Bestselling Author of widely acclaimed, ‘The Goddess Revolution: Make Peace With Food, Love Your Body and Reclaim Your Life’, hailed by OK! magazine, 'the new body bible for women'. I am thrilled to share this very special episode which is a Masterclass replay that I hosted with the one and only, Mel Robbins. If you've been following this podcast, you know that we had a conversation a while back and it's one of the most listened to episodes on the show. Mel is about to launch her book The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work and Confidence with Everyday Courage on Tuesday, February 28. I am honored to get to share her wisdom and her magic with you here on the podcast and I want to wholeheartedly encourage you to head on over to Amazon to grab her book right now! Mel Robbins is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the world. She's graced the stages of the largest well-known brands in the country and TEDx talk has had over 10 million views. She's already a best-selling author and is one of the most popular CNN commentators on TV. She has been a guest expert on Dr Oz, Oprah, and Dr Phil and more. And one of my most favorite things about Mel is her devotion to her family. Mel's been married to her husband, Chris, for 20 years and she's a mom to 3 amazing kids and an active member of her community. In this Soul-Fueled CEO Masterclass, we cover topics like anxiety, self-worth, taking the leap in business, and so many other things. We dissect the power of The 5-Second Rule, and how you can apply it to your own life to kickstart massive transformation with small, powerful changes. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How Mel developed the 5 Second Rule just to get out of bed and then used it to shake up her entire life Why self-doubt isn't who you are and how to break that pattern of behavior How Mel cured herself of anxiety with the 5 Second Rule What a ‘mental smoking break' is and how we take them all day long to procrastinate and deal with stress How to re-train yourself to deal with the things that trigger your anxiety The 3 buckets that determine your success in life and business and how to work around your weaknesses to make success easier to achieve. Why it's gracious to accept praise and how to acknowledge the people who compliment you How to go to war with imposter syndrome and interrupt the pattern MEL'S JOURNEY Being unemployed at 41 years old, facing leans on her house, and a huge financial crisis Getting to a point where her dreams didn't seem possible and being overwhelmed with self-doubt Beating her habit of hitting the snooze button and figuring out how to change any pattern of behavior with a simple technique WHAT I ASK: How do I use the 5-Second Rule to love myself and take care of me? Was there ever a point after the 5-Second Rule that you again struggled and got overwhelmed? What was the course of action you took to get out of it? Can you use the 5-Second Rule to hear the praise and positive affirmations people are trying to say to you? Are there any moments when the 5-Second Rule hasn't worked for you and do you give yourself consequences when you don't do what you should do? SOUL-FUELED QUOTES BY MEL ROBBINS: “Behind any success story, there's at least 10 years of suffering.” “You can always control what you say, what you think, and what you do.” “You don't need to know how it's going to turn out. You need to learn to trust your inner-wisdom.” “Your dreams come down to your decisions. Your life, the happiness you have come down to your decisions.” “You are one decision away from a totally different life.” “If you aren't valuing yourself, it's not because you aren't worth something. Your worth is your worth.” DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage

Mel Wells is the author of The Goddess Revolution coming to bookstores on June 7. She is a coach at The Green Goddess Life and the youngest Hay House author yet. She is a former soap opera star in the UK and is an advocate for ditching the diet mentality. Mel and I, along with the majority of women, have a past of constrictive, controlling or unhealthy eating habits. In this podcast, we discuss the power of healing and forgiveness and how making peace with food allows us to reclaim our lives and live the lives we truly want. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: The awakening moment that allowed Mel to throw away the scale and nourish her body from the inside out. Why we can't be Soul Fueled CEOs when we are trying to control our food. Mel's passion behind how one woman's beauty does not make another woman less beautiful. A little challenge for you to take a big step for sisterhood in this image-driven world. Mel's ritual to prevent being stagnant in her body and mind. The nonsense (and phenomena!) behind Mel's "before" and "after" photos on social media. How Mel's push to continually be vulnerable and real in her business is totally worth it.
