Russ Sorrells’s bio, in his own words: It all started because I wanted to be a better dad. I was driving home with my kids one day and thought, “Why doesn’t the school system teach kids how to live a happy life?” It dawned on me, “because that’s my job as a parent.” Duh. From then on, I started teaching daily 5 minute lessons to my kids based on everything I’ve learned over my 5 years as a high-performance coach. At first it was hard to add it to our manic morning routine, but now my kids harass me if they don’t get their daily Lunchbox Lesson. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Russ has expanded his brick-and-mortar business empire since his previous appearance on Onward Nation back on episode 21 How Russ created Lunchbox Lessons when he saw there are many life lessons his kids weren’t being taught, and realized school doesn’t prepare us for life in some key ways How Russ used his Lunchbox Lessons to teach his kids about things like first puppy love and other life experiences How each month’s Lunchbox Lessons deal with overarching themes and shares lessons in bite-sized pieces each day How Russ structures his Lunchbox Lessons, and how that same learning structure can be applied to business as well How Russ deals with feelings of Imposter Syndrome when sharing these important lessons with his kids, and why his goal is to give them an advantage in life What vision Russ has for his Lunchbox Lessons business, and how he hopes to create a cradle-to-grave personal development program discussing key life inflection points Why too few people engage in personal development, and why having the right mentors and role models can help you achieve your maximum potential in life Why Russ has focused on a particular niche by creating content exclusively for the families that would make use of and benefit from it Russ shares the story of a clinician friend who excels at connecting with doctors and patients because he leaves his ego at the door Resources: Russ’s previous visit to Onward Nation in episode 21: https://predictiveroi.com/podcasts/russ-sorrells/ Website: www.lunchboxlessons.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/russ-sorrells-001391b/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/Lunchbox-Lessons-111552050725699/ Additional Resources: Free Executive Leadership Summary report from Predictive ROI: https://predictiveroi.com/research Sell With Authority by Drew McLellan and Stephen Woessner: https://amzn.to/39y7x13 Predictive ROI Free Resource Library: https://predictiveroi.com/resources/ Stephen Woessner’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/stephenwoessner/

It's no secret that wood is essential to barbecue. Not only can it be used as a fuel to burn, but also as smoking wood on a charcoal fire. In fact, it's the smoke from the wood that gives barbeque it's unique flavour profile. Whether you're making BBQ ribs or a smoked brisket, wood is an important ingredient. But how important is it to get the right wood? And what is that right wood exactly? What's better - logs, chunks or wood chips? Those are the questions I seek to get answered in this conversation with Russ from Natural Smoke BBQ Woods, a family owned and operated business from Adelaide, South Australia.   In this episode of the Smoking Hot Confessions BBQ Podcast, Russ and I get into:  Why he loves his offset smoker and his brand new ugly drum smoker (UDS) (3:48) How his kids influence his cooks (8:08) How Russ got into BBQ (9:16) Why Russ is so interested in wood (22:39) Russ' grassroots, guerilla marketing techniques (30:55) Tips for matching and pairing woods and meats This Episode of the Smoking Hot Confessions BBQ Podcast is proudly brought to you by our Podcast Partner, Meat N Fire Media Services. For those who have watched Meet Joe Black, Russ Harrison reminds me of Anthony Hopkins’ character, William Parrish — a man who has led an exemplary life of courage, honor, integrity, success and caring. He IS the Evolved Caveman. From the first time I met him, when I was struck by his gentle nature and intelligence, I wanted to know more about him. After graduating from USC, Russ left behind his wife and 5-week-old son to become a Platoon Leader in Vietnam as an Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. His experiences in Vietnam, where he was shot twice and led a platoon of tanks, would forever shape his future. After Vietnam, Russ worked for Ross Perot’s EDS, was the youngest ever VP at Bank of America, was founding President of American Airlines’ Information Technology subsidiary, and has served as CEO of companies in the IT and medical device technologies fields. He has taught leadership development to Generals, Top Gun pilots and in Admirals. Now he serves on boards and presents to CEOs on the concept of quiet confidence. In this interview, we talk about topics such as… • The life-changing lessons Russ learned in the Marines • How Russ went from being in the middle of the Man Box Culture to evolving past it. • Where Russ found his quiet confidence and where you can find yours. • What Russ taught Generals and Admirals about leadership development. • What lessons Russ learned over his 40 years of running companies about how to lead people. • Russ' definition of success and happiness. Russ Perry ~ Founder of Design Pickle ~ Current Series ~ Entrepreneurs Surviving & Navigating the Corona Crisis     We're hopping into the podcast today with a friend and former guest of the show, Russ Perry. Russ is the founder of Design Pickle, and I actually had him on the show about two and a half years ago nearly 200 episodes ago. At the time, we chatted a lot about his company Design Pickle which was then just three years old, and they were doing half a million dollars a month with 125 employees. In that episode, Russ shared some really good insight and philosophy as an entrepreneur, how to build a business that serves the founder, as much as it serves the customers and clients, and the team as well. Now, fast forward two and a half years later, Russ' businesses are five years old, and they do $14 million in annual revenue, with a team of nearly 500 people also applying those same philosophies that he was two years ago.    Here's the reason I brought Russ back onto the show, Russ was a digital entrepreneur running a creative agency back in 2008 during the recession. He was in Phoenix, Arizona, which was like the impact zone for the ‘08 Housing Crisis and Cash Crunch back then. Russ survived as an entrepreneur, his business continued to flourish throughout that time, and he has some really good tips about the failures, lessons, and the hard times that he had surviving through that recession as an entrepreneur.   We chat about the lessons that he took away from 2008. We discuss when he saw the global pandemic hit, and changes that are happening, what were the immediate things that he implemented within the company and within his team.         02:00: Who is Russ Perry?      15:51: How Russ's Business Survived the '08-'09 Cash Crunch      22:32: Managing Your Stress During a Crisis      32:49: How to Build an Anti-Fragile Business      37:49: Action Steps Prompted by Covid-19      48:16: Russ's 6-Month Predictions      53:46: The Importance of Building a Solid Team      56:28: FreshStock      58:38: Final Thoughts 01:00:00: Where to Find Russ Perry Contact Info: Design Pickle: https://designpickle.com/ Social Media: Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/russkperry Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/russperry/       Website: https://www.thebusinessmethod.com/russperry Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-business-method-podcast/id1069958541?mt=2 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly90aGVidXNpbmVzc21ldGhvZC5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS9mZWVkLnhtbA%3D%3D Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2q8Q9t78sCL6kNkWlnV1Po

Russ Schnitzer is a Colorado-based conservationist and professional photographer whose love for the landscapes and people of the American West shines through in all aspects of his life. Russ is the Senior Program Officer for Natural Resources at the Gates Family Foundation, one of Colorado’s most effective and generous conservation funders. As a photographer, he’s worked with some of the biggest names in the flyfishing world, including Patagonia, R.L Winston Rod Co., Orvis, The Drake Magazine, The Flyfish Journal, and more. And to top it all off, Russ is a former hotshot wildland firefighter and smokejumper, and, as you’d expect, he has some amazing stories from that period of his life. Russ grew up in the midwest, but he headed to Idaho for college and has never looked back. During and after college, he fought fires throughout the West, and through that challenging, intense, dangerous work-- and at least one devastating tragedy-- he learned lessons that he still applies to his life today. Russ’s entire career has focused on protecting Western landscapes, and prior to the Gates Family Foundation, he worked for such notable organizations as Trout Unlimited and the Nature Conservancy. In his current role with Gates, he is laser-focused on finding community-driven conservation solutions for threatened landscapes, and during this episode, we go into great depths discussing his philosophies around effective conservation in the West. Whether you’re interested in the nitty-gritty details of large-scale land conservation or lessons learned from a life of hardcore adventure, there’s something in this episode for you. Russ and I were on a tight schedule, but we still managed to cover a lot... and left plenty of room for a part two at some point in the future. We discuss the value of private land conservation in the West and the need for community buy-in and ownership for all conservation initiatives. We talk about the importance of agriculture from an ecological and economic standpoint, with some very specific examples from eastern Colorado. Russ also shares some stories from his time as a hotshot and smokejumper-- the life-long bonds he formed with his teammates, the impact of these intense experiences on his life, and how he pushed through a terrible tragedy early in his firefighting career. There is so much wisdom and valuable information in this episode, so listen closely and check the episode notes for links to everything. Thanks again to Russ for taking the time to chat.
