Valerie Therrien is a nurse from French Canada. When the opportunity arose for she and her family to move to the Mexican Riveria, they jumped on it. That was 7 years ago. Valerie, her husband and her two girls moved without knowing the language. When Valerie's girls quickly became fluent she realized they were staying put, she decided to put some effort into learning the language. Being able to communicate in Spanish opened up an opportunity for Valerie who missed working as a nurse. She went through the daunting task of getting a nursing license in Mexico, which took her almost 2 years, multiple trips to Mexico City and an astounding amount of paperwork. While she was waiting for the license to come through, Valerie wasted no time in getting to know her network - other doctors, nurses and allied health. She realized there was an opportunity to work as a freelance nurse in this area. She spent the time waiting handing out business cards and keeping her audience informed of her progress. By the time Valerie got her nursing license in Mexico, she already had referrals coming into her. She now practices Concierge Nursing in Mexico, provides nursing consultations and does IV Hydration. Valerie overcame obstacles that would have stopped most people including getting a license abroad in a language she didn't know in a country where she knew no one. Her can do attitude is a testament to the amazing work of nurses around the world, who just aren't willing to accept a "no" or "you can't do that". What is wrong with me?    This question has haunted Valerie since she was a little girl. Whether it was being too loud, too smart, wearing the wrong clothes or eating the wrong things, something around her behaviour always seemed to be wrong.  Her life's journey ended up being guided by this question, and it brought her into the field of psychology.    Two graduate degrees later, she thought she was living her dream life. She had a thriving private practice, a family and home she adored, until one day she was on the phone with a client and realised that she was only smiling with the right side of her face. The left side of her mouth was hanging down, and so was her left arm. She ended up in the ER with symptoms of a stroke. Her diagnosis: Stress. It mystified her, because she didn't feel stressed at all.    That's when Valerie realised that the question of what was wrong with her was still there - it didn't go away with everything she had accomplished. It was just numbed. And while she thought she had done everything she could to be happy and fulfilled, that's not how she felt.     She started wondering why, and looked at what she did to help her own clients shift away from their numbness, and whether she could apply that to herself too.    Even though none of them had big traumatic experiences, she used trauma resolution tools in her therapy because she saw symptoms of trauma in all of them. They were somehow disconnected from parts of themselves, their dreams and desires. That's when it hit her: Could it be that there was some trauma she was overlooking, a trauma that affects people as a collective, herself included?    In this episode of the Sigrun Show, Valerie talks about how she discovered Patriarchy Stress Disorder (PSD) and how it affects women and men alike. She shares how PSD is responsible for many limiting beliefs women experience, and why now is the perfect time to heal yourself from this trauma.    Have you ever felt disconnected to your own feelings and ideas? Do you sometimes feel something is wrong with you, but you can't pin-point exactly what it is? Then this episode is a must-listen.    “Ask yourself this question: How much of what you're feeling is yours, and how much is collective?”- Dr. Valerie Rein   28:08-28:34   What you will get out of this episode:  What is wrong with me? The question that has accompanied Valerie all her life (3:34)  How Valerie discovered PSD (6:47) How PSD shows up (9:42) The healing tools for PSD (11:58) How PSD connects to the upper limit problem (15:09) The 5 stage system to healing (16:15) Why now is the best time to heal your trauma (22:31) Valerie's morning exercise (30:36) Anticipating the next trauma (34:58)   Want to dive deeper? Understand if you're sabotaging your own success or how to detect and work through your upper limit.  Morning Ritual to Counter Negative Feelings Brought by Hidden Trauma If you feel stressed, experience anxiety or aren't sleeping well, there might be an underlying reason for these feelings that isn't immediately obvious to you. Dr. Valerie Rein uses trauma resolution tools to help her clients connect to themselves, because even though none of them had big traumatic experiences, she recognised trauma symptoms in all of them. To counter negative feelings brought forth by hidden trauma, she recommends the following exercise she does every morning.    Breathe   Every morning when you wake up, get in touch with your body and check in how you feel. Ask yourself the question: How much of what you feel is yours, and how much of it is something that affects people as a collective?  Take a deep breath, squeeze your muscles, then breathe out, letting it all drop. Repeat a few times.     Shake   Shake out your feelings. Animals shake themselves to release stress. Shake your head and your feet, and if some emotion is present, add an expression. You might feel sadness, anger or fear. Let the emotion come to your voice and face. It doesn't have to be for long, the lifespan of an emotion is 90 seconds if you allow it to express fully. Shake it all out, then tap your shoulders and legs and breathe  until you feel your system settle down.    Soothe   Move over to the soothing phase and caress your arms and hands. This brings the nervous system to a deep level of relaxation and safety. You will notice the shift already as during this phase your body is producing oxytocin, which makes us feel good and helps us connect with our community.  Did this episode help you do something for your own wellbeing? This week, we switched it up to take a deep dive into lighting with Ballard lighting experts Valerie and Roger. They answer all our lighting questions including, how many light sources we actually need, the rules for wattage and color that can help us get the best brightness and not waste money, and why light fixtures are like the jewelry of a home. They also give their personal picks for the type of lighting that works best in a space, share rules for using shades and finding the right lamp height, and common mistakes we make that can make a huge difference in creating a simple yet beautiful mood in a room. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Valerie handles the “pretty” part of lighting at Ballard, and Roger hands the technical. How Valerie and Roger work together to make things both as functional and aesthetically pleasing as possible, and what a day in their work life looks like. How we know if a room is under lit, and if there is a thing as too much lighting in a room. The rules of thumb for hanging lights at different levels, and the most important rules of can lights. Why we shouldn’t rely on one fixture such as a chandelier to be our main source of light. The many different ways light bulbs can make or break a room, what exactly wattage is and how we are paying for it, and how to know which LED colors to pick. Is there a senior leader in your organization with the sole job of eliminating “customer friction points”?  Well, there is at Banner Health.  Valerie Monet is the Senior Director of Customer Experience Strategy at Banner Health.  This demonstrates a remarkable commitment to the consumerist mindset from one of the largest and most forward-thinking integrated healthcare systems in the country.  Banner Health is attempting to improve the patient experience by transforming the customer experience.Valerie Monet has over a decade of involvement  in healthcare customer experience. Prior to joining Banner Health, Valerie spent thirteen years at J.D. Power where her responsibilities included strategic planning, business development, customer experience management and consumer data analytics, as well as qualitative ‘voice-of-the-customer’ data collection.  In this role, she worked with dozens of top performing consumer-oriented companies in the U.S. and Canada. In this interview we’ll discuss:Why a focus on customer experience has become increasingly important to healthcare systems in differentiating themselves from their competitors. What strategies Banner Health is deploying to reduce customer friction points and differentiate it’s consumer experience, including their omnipresent patient/customer persona - “Sophia”.How Valerie and her colleagues utilize both quantitative and qualitative data to understand the customer experience and measure the improvements. How Valerie understands consumerism to be highly complementary and synergistic with the concept of “patient”.The similarities and marked differences between the customer experience in healthcare and other industries, and why healthcare experiences tend to be more polarized - either really good or really bad...At this point in time, Valerie admits that she can’t easily quantify the outcomes of many of her hypothesis, despite dogged efforts to do so.  I admire and respect her honesty regarding where she’s at and where she’s trying to get to.  Much in keeping with other experts I’ve interviewed, Valerie emphasizes that many of the insights have to be gleaned from qualitative research and field data collection - direct conversations with healthcare consumers.  As she puts it, customer experience is a data scientist’s dream; but there’s also an art to it.  The measurement of experience is impacted by numerous factors such as patient expectations and the strength of the doctor-patient relationship.  Science, as she points out, will only get you so far.One of the most telling insights Valerie shared was when I asked her to instruct us, in less than 30 seconds, how we might go about setting up an amazing customer experience division.  Her immediate answer was, “just start listening to your customers and patients - start getting feedback - find a starting place, sit there and observe and listen - and just start to understand what they feel and what they see and what it’s like to be on the other side.”In the end, what I repeatedly come back to is that customer experience is about better understanding the people we care for and treat, understanding what they want and need, making it easier for them to manage their healthcare and their health, and creating better experiences and better outcomes - call it what you will...This was one of the most interesting discussions I’ve had on one of the most important topics in healthcare.  It’s clear that Valerie is excited by the intellectual, emotional and purposeful pursuit of customer experience; and she makes it salient and purposeful for those of us who are not experts in this domain.  Her curiosity and fascination with this topic are infectious.Until next time, be well.Zeev
