Send us a textWandering the streets of Providence, where art meets asphalt, "Black Bourdain: The Creative Capital" is a journey through conversation, connection, and the poetry of the everyday. From random run-ins to deep musings, one stranger—a 23-year-old navigating love, loss, and the uneasy road back to romance—reminds us that the city, like the heart, is always under construction.
For almost a dozen years, 34 Black women gathered monthly around a big dining room table in an orange house on Orange Street in Oakland, CA — meeting, cooking, dancing, strategizing — grappling with the issues of eviction, erasure, gentrification, inadequate health care, and the sex trafficking of Black women and girls overwhelming their community.Spearheaded by dancer and choreographer Amara Tabor-Smith and theater director Ellen Sebastian Chang, this House/Full of Black Women — artists, scholars, healers, nurses, midwives, an ice cream maker, a donut maker, an architect, a theater director, a choreographer, sex trafficking abolitionists and survivors — have come together to creatively address and bring their mission and visions to the streets. Over the years they have created performances, rituals, pop-up processions in the storefronts, galleries, warehouses, museums and streets of Oakland. This hour-long special features sound-rich “episodes” of performances and rituals, interviews with sex trafficking abolitionists, personal stories of growing up in the Bay Area, music, Black women dreaming, resisting, insisting.Produced by Ellen Sebastian Change, Sital Muktari and The Kitchen Sisters, narrated by Sital Muktari, mixed by Jim McKee, in collaboration with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell and an evolving House/Full of Black Women collective, Funding for this House/Full of Black Women special comes from The Creative Work Fund, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Kaleta Doolin Foundation, The Texas Women's Foundation, Susan Sillins, listener contributions to The Kitchen Sisters Productions, and PRX.Original funding for House/Full of Black Women was provided by Creative Capital, Creative Work Fund, The Kenneth Rainin Foundation, MAP Fund, and the Hewlett 50.House/Full of Black Women is part of The Keepers series produced by The Kitchen Sisters,. Partnerships are more critical in cannabis than in many other industries. The line between success and failure is razor-thin, and most companies don't have the resources to recover from a failed “marriage.”One of the unique and beautiful challenges of the cannabis industry is the emotional connection founders have with their businesses. Much like a parent's love for a child, founders tend to see only the good, often downplaying potential downsides. The ability to stay grounded, ask the hard questions, and—most importantly—be culturally and mentally prepared to discuss a “marriage” with another group is daunting. When conversations about capital or potential acquisitions arise, it's easy to overvalue a business internally. Founders know the countless hours and effort that went into building it, which can cloud judgment about its true market value. This week we sit down with Tony Schor to discuss:Where partnerships fail.Creative ways cannabis companies are securing capital.Where people are investing in the cannabis industry.Episode HighlightsCannabis Industry Insights (00:01:25)Discussion of cannabis industry legacyImportance of partnerships in industry growthEast Coast vs. West Coast cannabis market dynamicsMergers & Acquisitions Deep Dive (00:02:53)Challenges of cannabis M&A transactionsImportance of cultural fit in partnershipsStrategies for finding the right manufacturing and brand partnershipsCapital and Technology in Cannabis (00:37:47)Technology as the hottest investment area in cannabisChallenges of raising capital in the industryCross-industry interest in cannabis opportunitiesCannabis Hall of Fame (00:47:33)Tony's role as chairmanPlans for a 13,000 sq. ft. immersive exhibit at Planet 13 in Las VegasGoal of destigmatizing cannabis through education and recognition About Tony SchorTony Schor is an accomplished leader and President of Chicago-based Strategic Intro / Investor Awareness, Inc. Yancey Strickler on Metalabel, Digital Scarcity, and the Coming Creative RevolutionKickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler unveils his vision of a radical economic future where artists become society's power brokers. Through Metalabel, he's building the infrastructure for collective commerce and creative ownership that could transform how we value and exchange culture.“In 50 years, artists won't just influence culture—they'll control capital”Key takeaways:{00:13:10} - “The concept of art and creativity that we think of today that we take as givens that we're like, “Oh my God, I have to promote my drop again today,” are incredibly modern inventions.” - Yancey{00:24;51] - “I believe {this project} will produce a world where 50 or 60 years from now, artists and creative people are the most powerful members of society. They will have the greatest influence. They will have the greatest access to wealth. They will be the most powerful people in society, and this is a structure by which that will occur. And that's a project we'll announce next year.” - Yancey{00:26:20} - “We all want to be able to homestead and have our own spaces that are ours, but we also want to be part of spaces where we can be discovered. And so how can our catalogs exist in a world like that? Artists right now are excluded from capitalism. Let's change that.” - Yancey{00:28:53} - “People are still just looking in the dead channel, the dying channels…where we've been trained to look for what is new and what matters. And the answer is that that's not where those things are happening now.” - Yancey{00:38:09} - “Anyone who's 20 years old today, born and raised on the Internet, there's just like a mentality, a metamodern, just flat openness, super well-curated sort of vibe that I just think lends itself quite well to operating very specific, but I think very successful, small to medium-sized creative businesses.” - YanceyAssociated Links:Pre-order the LORE Journal by Future Commerce on MetalabelConnect with Yancey Strickler and learn more about MetalabelThe Dark Forest CollectiveKirby Ferguson's New York Times piece, Is Creativity Dead?Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? The old mill buildings of the Olneyville and Valley neighborhoods in Providence were once the home to hundreds of artists. Back in the 1990s, space was cheap in the old mills and many artists were happy to live and work in these run-down post-industrial spaces. But starting in the early aughts, artists faced evictions as many of those buildings were torn down or converted to luxury loft apartments or condos. So what's available now?
How can museums remain relevant in the digital age, where visual imagery is more accessible than ever? What role do museums play in fostering creativity and innovation in their communities?Stephen Reily is the Founding Director of Remuseum, an independent research project housed at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. This method improves quality control, speeds up construction, and is beneficial for workers. The project, named Lab 9, is unique and has potential for expansion.· Hotel and Hospitality: Burch's hotel, Nihi, off the coast of Bali, has received numerous accolades and is known for its unique, community-focused experience. Burch is expanding his hospitality ventures with a new project in Costa Rica, emphasizing authentic experiences and community involvement.· Green Lane Salad Chain: Burch introduced a new salad chain, Green Lane, offering fresh, affordable salads through a drive-through model. The business has received positive feedback and is expanding rapidly with plans to roll out more locations. Each brand is at different stages of growth or turnaround, with a focus on affordability and customer engagement. Burch emphasizes the importance of operational efficiency and strategic pricing in the fashion industry.· Investment Philosophy and Approach: Chris Burch invests in businesses with momentum and potential for significant growth. He prefers to partner with businesses, offering not just capital but also operational expertise, which gives him an edge over traditional private equity funds. He looks for companies with demand and potential, even if they are currently struggling, like Rowing Blazers, which had strong brand perception but was facing operational challenges.· Involvement and Value Addition: Burch's level of involvement varies depending on the needs of the business. He can provide strategic vision or get into detailed operational aspects if necessary. He emphasizes the importance of building a solid management team and working directly with entrepreneurs to maximize business potential.· Preference for Control and Strategic Planning: Burch prefers to have significant control over the businesses he invests in, avoiding situations where board control could impede his influence. He focuses on long-term strategic planning, aiming to envision where the business will be in ten years and working towards that vision.· Vision for New Ventures: Burch is interested in integrating supply chain and luxury experiences into new markets, particularly in housing, hotels, and hospitality. He is exploring the development of a new, unique hotel concept in Hialeah, blending luxury, entertainment, and wellness. He believes the future of hospitality lies in creating spaces that offer both high-energy entertainment and serene relaxation.· Lessons Learned and Investment Criteria: Over his career, Burch has learned the importance of separating emotionality from investment decisions and the critical role of hiring competent CEOs. He tends to sell his investments early, which has been both a benefit for peace of mind and a potential downside in terms of missed growth opportunities. He looks for substantial stakes in companies, preferring significant involvement and control over smaller, passive investments.

To celebrate International Women's Day we're shining the spotlight on our special ops team. For the past two years, our all-female Special Ops team has been deploying flexible non-dilutive financing to companies trying to reach that next stage of scale. S2G's Andrea Woodside and Marisa Sweeney break down what a special opportunity is, the role this type of funding plays in today's funding environment, and who should reach out to them (any asset-oriented climate company) and when (as soon as possible). If you are seeking funding for an infrastructure-oriented company this episode is for you!Key Takeaways:The state of climate funding today: Billions of dollars have gone into climate tech, much of it to clean energy technologies, enabling them to transition from early-stage venture to later-stage capital. This episode marks the second time featuring artist and friend Raven Chacon on Broken Boxes. The first time I interviewed Raven was in 2017, when I visited with him at the Institute of American Indian Arts where he was participating in a symposium on Indigenous performance titled, Decolonial Gestures. This time around, we met up with Raven at his home in Albuquerque, NM where recurring host and artist Cannupa Hanska Luger chatted with Raven for this episode. The conversation reflects on the arc of Ravens practice over the past decade, along with the various projects they have been able to work on together, including Sweet Land (2020), an award-winning, multi-perspectival and site-specific opera staged at the State Historical Park in downtown Los Angeles, for which Raven was composer and Cannupa co-director and costume designer. Raven and Cannupa also reflect on their time together traveling up to Oceti Sakowin camp in support of the water protectors during the resistance of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Raven provides context to his composition Storm Pattern, which was a response to being onsite at Standing Rock, and the artists speak to the long term impact of an Indigenous solidarity gathering of that magnitude. Raven speaks about being named the first Native American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize or Voiceless Mass, and shares the composition's intention and performance trajectory. To end the conversation, Raven shares insight around staying grounded while navigating the pressures of success, travel and touring as a practicing artist, and reminds us to find ways to slow down and do what matters to you first, creatively, wherever possible. Raven Chacon is a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, performer, and installation artist from Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. As a solo artist, Chacon has exhibited, performed, or had works performed at LACMA, The Renaissance Society, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, REDCAT, Vancouver Art Gallery, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Borealis Festival, SITE Santa Fe, Chaco Canyon, Ende Tymes Festival, and The Kennedy Center. As a member of Postcommodity from 2009 to 2018, he co-created artworks presented at the Whitney Biennial, documenta 14, Carnegie International 57, as well as the two-mile-long land art installation Repellent Fence. A recording artist whose work has spanned twenty-two years, Chacon has appeared on more than eighty releases on various national and international labels. His 2020 Manifest Destiny opera Sweet Land, co-composed with Du Yun, received critical acclaim from the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and The New Yorker, and was named 2021 Opera of the Year by the Music Critics Association of North America. Since 2004, he has mentored over 300 high school Native composers in the writing of new string quartets for the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project (NACAP). Chacon is the recipient of the United States Artists fellowship in Music, The Creative Capital award in Visual Arts, The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation artist fellowship, the American Academy's Berlin Prize for Music Composition, the Bemis Center's Ree Kaneko Award, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award (2022) and the Pew Fellow-in-Residence (2022). His solo artworks are in the collectIons of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian's American Art Museum and National Museum of the American Indian, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Getty Research Institute, the Albuquerque Museum, University of New Mexico Art Museum, and various private collections. On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, continues an exciting summer series of interviews with local women/fem artists who are all engaged in some form of struggle for social justice and are all featured in an exhibit called “We Don't Wither,” on display at the Muhammad Ali Center April 1 - December 18, 2023. We Don't Wither examines the intersection of art and activism. The artists have created pieces that respond to current socio-cultural and -political situations, lived experiences, and related current events — to see our world and our community through their unique perspectives. The intention is to celebrate the often unheard experiences, opinions, feelings, and perspectives from those who work, create, and fight in our city; to share their artwork and views with visitors; and to provide a space for conversation and reflection. This exhibit is included in the regular price of admission, but you can see it for free and meet the artists themselves during the upcoming ARTIST SHOWCASES: Shauntrice Martin July 29 LaNia Roberts August 12 Joanne Weis August 26 Morgan McGill September 30 Nikki Douglas October 28 Learn more at: https://alicenter.org/muhammad-ali-center-announces-new-temporary-exhibit-featuring-louisville-area-artists/ This week, we interview LaNia Roberts, an artist who was born in 1996 and raised in the West End of Louisville. After several years in Louisville Visual Art's Children Fine Art Classes and attending Kentucky Governor School for the Arts, she graduated from Central High School in 2014. With multiple scholarships and as a first generation college student, she entered Syracuse University in New York to study painting and was very active in student organizations becoming President of the Black Artist League for 3 years, as well as singing in the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble and more. While studying at Syracuse, LaNia continued to exhibit work throughout the Louisville area in spaces like the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany and 1619 Flux Art & Activism. During her junior year of college, LaNia was the first ever in her family to travel abroad. She lived and studied painting, photography, and sculpture in Florence, Italy, and took a 4-month art history class throughout Greece. She soon was invited back to Italy to attend art workshops led by master professors taught in Tuscany, Italy in 2017 and 2018. At the end of her senior year, LaNia lived and worked in New York City with internships at Creative Capital and the Ronald Feldman Art Gallery. During the fall of 2018 LaNia lived and studied Human Rights & Multiculturalism for a full semester in Cape Town, South Africa. She has traveled to a total of 13 countries within the past 5 years. LaNia completed her degree in Painting in 2019. Since traveling and graduating, LaNia has moved back to Louisville. Recently invited to speak at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, LaNia was flown out to present her artwork and to talk about “Decolonizing the Art World as a Black Woman” to college students. Ep.147 features Titus Kaphar, an artist whose paintings, sculptures, and installations examine the history of representation by transforming its styles and mediums with formal innovations to emphasize the physicality and dimensionality of the canvas and materials themselves. His practice seeks to dislodge history from its status as the “past” in order to unearth its contemporary relevance, and to reveal something of what has been lost and to investigate the power of a rewritten history. Kaphar's commitment to social engagement has led him to move beyond traditional modes of artistic expression to establish NXTHVN, a new national arts model that empowers emerging artists and curators of color through education and access. Through intergenerational mentorship, professional development and cross-sector collaboration, NXTHVN accelerates professional careers in the arts. https://www.nxthvn.com/ Titus Kaphar (b. 1976, Kalamazoo, Michigan) lives and works in New Haven, CT. For some eight years now thirty-four Black women have gathered monthly around a big dining room table in the orange house on Orange Street in Oakland, CA—meeting, cooking, dancing, strategizing—grappling with the issues of eviction, erasure, gentrification, inadequate health care, and the sex trafficking of Black women and girls that are overwhelming their community. Spearheaded by dancer/choreographer Amara Tabor Smith and theater director Ellen Sebastian Chang, this House/Full of Black Women—artists, scholars, healers, nurses, midwives, an ice cream maker, a donut maker, an architect, a theater director, a choreographer, sex trafficking abolitionists and survivors—have come together to creatively address and bring their mission and visions to the streets. Over the years they have created performances, rituals, pop-up processions in the storefronts, galleries, warehouses, museums and streets of Oakland. This hour-long special features sound-rich “episodes” of performances and rituals, interviews with sex trafficking abolitionists, personal stories of growing up in the Bay Area, music, Black women dreaming, resisting, insisting.
