The legendary David Bowie finally makes his 'My Classic Album' debut courtesy of Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen. Phil joins Mike on this episode to discuss Bowie's celebrated album 'Aladdin Sane'. With a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career of his own, Phil reveals the impact David Bowie had on him in his formative years and how this album set him on his own musical journey... and of course with Mike being such a huge Def Leppard fan he couldn't resist some chat about 'Hysteria' and beyond! In Phil's opinion, how does 'Aladdin Sane' improve on Bowie's breakthrough 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars'?  Why did Def Leppard choose to cover 'Drive In Saturday' for their 2006 covers album 'Yeah!'? What unique Bowie recording was Phil's band mate Joe Elliott able to give to the man himself? I had an infuriating interview with Phil Goff yesterday, and I say infuriating because as a proud born and bred Aucklander, I feel very despondent about what has happened to our once great city. It’s a shambles. That’s putting it politely.A word starting with cluster and ending in something that rhymes with duck would be more appropriate. But basically, Mayor Phil Goff has taken a leaf out of the Jacinda and Ashley playbook, of literally denying reality and refuting any facts thrown his way. In Phil’s world, we’re all on buses, trains, ferries, and bikes. We love public transport and only want to use more of it; we don’t need or want our cars. I don’t know what planet Phil’s living on, but it’s not Planet Auckland. When I put it to him that no one’s on the buses, he rejected that, and said 43 percent of people from the North Shore come into Auckland on the bus. I’m not sure where he got that stat, but Glenn, one of Mike’s producers, found a chart of greater Auckland showing that people who come in on the bus hasn’t changed in 20 years. Glenn, by the way, happens to live on the North Shore, so was particularly riled by Phil Goff’s claim that almost half of them are on the bus.So, Phil reckons 43 percent are on the bus to town, stats from 1996 to 2018 say it’s in fact well below 10 percent.I asked about traffic congestion and what they’re going to do to fix it, Phil said they “can’t just bulldoze houses to make roads wider”. What a ridiculous answer. The roads were wider, until they got narrowed by cycle and bus lanes, and so called ‘people friendly’ spaces which as far as I can see are so confusing there are no people in them.So great swathes of the roads have been cut up and taken off cars for what?Phil said a double decker bus takes a hundred cars off the road. But that’s only if a hundred people are getting on the double decker bus, which they’re not. It’s all theory, no reality. And this is part of my problem with idealogues, they’re in denial. Phil rejected my suggestion the city is wrecked, and it’s the council who’ve wrecked it, he said he ‘disagreed entirely’. So given he’s rejected it, it must not have happened then. What they are spending some of this $31.8 billion on is climate and environment priorities, wastewater treatment. There’s a huge tunnel “big enough to fit a giraffe” he said, to manage wastewater overflows. So here’s Auckland’s future as prescribed by the Mayor;Everyone’s on a bus.The city’s not wrecked or congested at all.We love public transport. And just be grateful there’s a new tunnel coming, big enough to hold a giraffe.I’ve never been more tempted to run for Mayor.

Jewish mother (2 Tim 1—mother Eunice and grandmother Lois)“A disciple”—not a bad phrase for one’s epitaph. But this is early in Timothy’s life, not late. As we will see, he seems to have continued to grow—to be a disciple, a learner.Character is key. That is, we should not chose people as leaders because they are impressive in a worldly way: photogenic, or tall, or powerful, or intellectual. He good character was known in more than one location.3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.Paul averts unnecessary criticism by having Timothy circumcised. This is a strategic decision.Titus he did not circumcise, but then Titus came from a fully Gentile background.4 As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.Timothy saw Paul at work, not only in Lystra, but in many towns.Paul and Timothy were coworkers. It’s immensely valuable to work with someone who knows how to share their faith, plant a church, deal with problems, preach the Word, etc. I have benefited from his sort of training. He understood unity between Paul & Jerusalem leaders. Paul reminds the people of Philippi of their identity in God as a holy people, ser apart. In PHIL 1:1-11, he says: to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi,... grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Then he gives a formula for prayer -give thanks to God at every remembrance of you, -praying always with joy in every prayer for all of you, ... confident of this, that the one who began a good work in us will continue to complete it He invites us “to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” PS 111 let's remember “How great are the works of the Lord!” As a departure point in our discernment process. In LK 14:1-6 we find Jesus On a sabbath dining at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there are observing him carefully. Jesus cures a man w palsy bending the rules of not working on the sabbath to open their eyes to God's ways, leaving them in silence, hopefully discerning. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/support

Yahweh is God’s name, not an attribute of God. But in OT times, a name wasn’t just a way to provide identification of someone, it could also describe their character and personality. God has many names in the bible. He reveals Himself to us through His names. Yahweh is a divine and sacred name. It is a name only used for the one true God, the self-existent, living God. "Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent." [Ps 148:13a]. God stands behind His name with full force and truth and is zealous of His name. Yahweh or Jehovah is the name God uses of Himself. It is a covenant keeping name between God and man. It means Lord, Master. And even more personally, a name God uses to communicate with His own people and a name used when in relationship with the people He loves. He defined His name for us so that we could better understand who God really is and all of His attributes. It is a holy, eternal name that holds great might and power. This section references the Blue Bible Book website. Don Stewart: Why Is God Called Yahweh? (Jehovah). In [Ex 3:14] God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” God’s name here encapsulates the full depth of who He is. The One and Only True and Living God of all gods. It describes the eternal supremacy of all He is over all others in the universe. No one else holds a name greater than His name. Yahweh and Jehovah is used in combination with other names for God. These compound names include Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide; Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord is Peace; Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of hosts, The Lord of Powers; Jehovah Shammah: The Lord is There; Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness; Jehovah-Raah: The Lord My Shepherd; Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord that Heals, The Lord Your Healer; Jehovah Nissi: The Lord My Banner; and Jehovah Mekoddishkem: The Lord Who Sanctifies You.Jehovah is translated as "The Existing One." Many scholars believe the most proper meaning is “He Brings into Existence Whatever Exists” (Yahweh-Asher-Yahweh). [Jer 33:2] He who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it -the LORD is his name. Yahweh-Elohim. This title is used of God’s relationship to humanity as Creator. First used in Gen 1:1. [Ps 95:6] Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.Jesus’ name was given by God to Joseph in a dream, [Matt 1:21[ “you are to give him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” Jesus means Savior, appropriately named for what he would do and how His life would be represented and remembered. In Acts 4:12, it says that “there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be save.” This indicates the eternal significance for us of the power of the name of Jesus. In Phil 2:10 is says that, “God gave Him the name that is above every name and that at that name every knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.”We should never take His name lightly. [Lev 22:32] says, “Do not profane my holy name.” We are to treat His name with reverence and grave significance in our minds and hearts. Do not use it casually, flippantly, or in vain. When you honor His name, you are showing Him devotion, respect, and admiration. You are showing that God's name is of the utmost importance to you. People will notice when you do this. If you take His name seriously, people will see that your heart is fully committed and they will more likely believe your witness about God and Jesus His Son. “Who is God to you?” When you pray, are you praying to an “it” or to a “thing?” I hope not, because God is a person with a name who created you and loves you. What does His name mean to you? Ask yourself, is He your Most High God, All sufficient One, Master and Lord? Is He your Provider, Shepherd, and Friend? God knows us by our name, shouldn't we know Him by His name?

Do you want to understand how trunking systems work? In this episode, Phil explains how trunking system networks, sites, channels, and layers all work together and gives some examples both from his local area and more hypothetical use cases.   What You Need To Know This episode ties into last week’s episode about programming groups. A Motorola type 2 trunking system is capable of having 28 channels per site. A Smart Zone system is a collection of Smart Net systems Smart Zone networks have dynamic site assignments, meaning that if a radio or talk group is not affiliated with a site, then it does not need to be broadcast on that site. Although he uses a Motorola system as an example, these explanations also apply to DMR and P25 radio systems. In Phil’s county, they have simulcast sites on different frequency bands. These sites on this system may or may not broadcast the same talk groups. Trunking systems have multiple sites in order to efficiently use the resources available, freeing up channels for local users. In the prime of his life, Phil Kohn was suddenly forced to wrestle with issues of physical pain, emotional anguish, and the reality of his Mortality. Today--because of his trial--he is more alive than ever.  How do you relate to discomfort, challenges, and suffering? Our relationship to those things determines what we will produce in our lives. In Phil’s case, courageous vulnerability has allowed him to turn his pain into a deeper understanding and deployment of his unique purpose in life. Phil’s story can help you learn to do that, too.  Phil’s ensuing health saga wasn't something you'd wish on your worst enemy, but remarkably, it kicked off a complete life renovation for Phil. Today, Phil defines what it means to be alive very differently. When I listened to the recording after the interview to prepare it for release, I was so impressed with Phil's depth and breadth and authenticity. He's the sort of guy that you realize might have some of that genius quality about him, and he's got a really cool humility to go along with it.  This episode is loaded with insight and application for life that Phil has mined from the past seven years of struggle. It's a lesson in personal courage, resilience, mastering pain, and discovering your unique purpose in life. Some of you may even be able to relate to the specifics of Phil's health battle, and if so, I know you'll be encouraged and inspired to press on. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.     Meet Phil Kohn Phil Kohn worked as an investment banker on Wall Street and Sydney, Australia. Then he traveled the world building international lottery partnerships for a publicly-traded lottery ticket and gaming business. His fast-paced life in finance hit a brick wall in 2013 when a battery of complex chronic illnesses took hold. His life flipped on its head, Phil decided to become an entrepreneur--with his first business launching out of his Beijing apartment. Phil has since transformed into a Mandarin-speaking, ultra-health-conscious individual who is currently training in Neurodynamic breathwork while co-hosting a new podcast on breathwork called The Breath Circle. He also just wrapped up the pilot season of StratosCast - a podcast highlighting changemakers on the frontiers of health and wellness (click here for the soon-to-be-released season finale episode discussing tools to hack resilience and promote creativity and curiosity in life). During the day, he advises and coaches business founders while also building a conscious media business called Myndful. He and his partner Miranda currently live in New Mexico.      Brick Wall to On-ramp In 2013, Phil was based in China--living the dream, as they say, a young man making his way in the world adventurously and with plenty of financial reward. Then a sudden bout of food and water poisoning put him on his heels and in the hospital and kicked off what has now become a seven-year health saga that includes chronic Lyme disease, mold and heavy metal poisoning, and significant mental health challenges. It has been a really rough road, to say the very least. Over time, though, the proverbial “brick wall” has become an unlikely on-ramp to a completely new perspective on life and what matters most.    Where the On-ramp Has Taken Him There’s no way to sum up Phil’s seven-year journey of suffering and renewal in these shownotes. The full episode itself can’t do that. But we can tease out some of the major transformational points that have emerged so far for Phil so that we can learn from his story.  The three most powerful transformational points that jumped out to me from my conversation with Phil are his new relationships with vulnerability, pain, and control.    Vulnerability: Finding Strength in Weakness His physical plight forced him to demonstrate a level of vulnerability that he’d never experienced before as he sought understanding and solutions from a myriad of medical and alternative sources. And he found himself dependent on family and friends for care and encouragement in a way he never had before. It opened him up to deeper relationships with other conscious men and an unprecedented level of commitment to personal growth. For Phil, vulnerability has now become a valuable and trusted approach to living his best life.  How many of us view vulnerability this way? The prevailing culture doesn’t. But Phil’s story turns the conventional wisdom of the prevailing culture on its head, and shows us that vulnerability can be a source of strength and a tool for transformational healing. What he was forced to discover because of the health saga, we can choose to discover ourselves to live an even more impactful life--starting today.    Pain: From Enemy to Companion Phil’s physical and emotional pain was and still is significant. For a while, he looked for ways to numb or eliminate the pain altogether. As option after option disappointed, he slowly came to grips with the fact that pain was now his companion--albeit an unwelcome one. This acceptance led Phil to discover that by leaning into and exploring the pain non-judgmentally and with curiosity and a TINY bit of love and appreciation--”Thank you, body, for communicating with me so clearly”--the pain actually faded into the background of his life rather than being a big glaring blip on his radar screen. His choice to stop fighting has--paradoxically--led to a substantial measure of relief from the pain.  What is your relationship with pain--whether it’s physical, mental, both, or something else altogether? My experience with life-long anxiety has taught me the same lesson that Phil has learned: Acceptance rather than Resistance is the way forward.    Control: It’s Not All It’s Cracked Up to Be Phil tells a great story about hurtling down the road in a newly-leased, chartreuse BMW M4--feeling in control at the wheel of the ultimate driving machine going well over the speed limit...and simultaneously realizing that he was truly out of control as a man. That led to an overall reconsideration of what he was and what he wasn’t in control of in life. The ironic destination of his road trip was his first Men’s Circle experience, where he became the unwitting focus of the group’s attention and was first introduced to the healing power of deeper relationships with conscious men. The following day he participated in his first breath circle, followed by two days of 1-1 breathwork sessions — the beginning of a deep exploration into the power of transformational breathwork, a whole new world beyond yoga and pranayama.  Control really is an illusion. There is precious little, if anything, that we can truly, 100% control. We insulate ourselves from that terrifying truth in myriad creative ways. Phil shows us that--counterintuitively--relinquishing “control” is a path to freedom. And for him, breathwork was the starting point for retraining his mind and body to embrace this incredibly simple but very elusive idea.    Phil’s New Path It’s no hyperbole to say that Phil is a very different man today than he was seven years ago. He's still suffering the effects of his long-standing, complex health issues, for sure--but strangely more alive than ever. Today he seeks to beautify the world through his life rather than (and this is an overstatement for contrast) use or consume the world for his benefit. Meditation, breathwork, coaching, podcasting, and creative collaborations with others similarly orientated have become his new focus. His substantial innate gifts and accumulated experience and expertise are being brought to bear on projects that create deeper human connections and enrich the world. Links and info about some of those projects and ways to connect with Phil can be found at the end of these shownotes.  To get the full benefit of this conversation with Phil, I hope you'll tune into the full episode!   A Challenge, Should You Choose to Accept It If you are a regular listener to Andrew Petty is Dying, then you are already taking the road less traveled and growing in your resolve to be the person you were made to be and live the life you were made to live. And what's one thing--just one thing--that you will actually DO differently as a result of that insight? Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. Tune in to hear from a favorite of many, Sheril Kirshenbaum. Sheril is the ED of Science Debate as well as the host of 'Serving up Science' on PBSDS. With major concerns about shortages in grocery stores and mad scrambles to find the last box of pasta or toilet paper roll, many of the nation’s largest farms are struggling with another ghastly effect of the pandemic. They are being forced to destroy tens of millions of pounds of fresh food that they can no longer sell. Food WASTE during a pandemic? HOW? The closing of restaurants, hotels and schools has left some farmers with no buyers for more than half their crops. And even as retailers see spikes in food sales to Americans who are now eating nearly every meal at home, the increases are not enough to absorb all of the perishable food that was planted weeks ago and intended for schools and businesses. Sheril has a refreshing approach to science and reality with a thought-provoking view on food waste and climate change. In Phil's words - she puts the cookies on the lower shelf. Sojourners Church Sermons

Phil 1:27–30 Sermon PreviewThis Sunday, we’re going to get political. In Phil 1:27, Paul writes, “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ....” This statement might not seem political on the surface, but a little digging will show you what I mean. The ESV includes a footnote which says "Greek ‘Only behave as citizens worthy’”. That’s because the Greek word Paul uses here (πολιτεύεσθε) doesn’t have an easy English equivalent (hence, “let your manner of life be....”) But, if we take a cue from the footnote and read the rest of Philippians with our ears open for citizenship language, we’ll find some in Philippians 3:20. “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” The sentences look unrelated in English, but are connected in Greek. If we poke around in Philippians 1:27–30 and 3:20–4:3, we see more shared vocabulary and concepts (stand firm, agree, strive/labor side by side, etc.). This means that Paul wrote Philippians 1:27–30 and 3:20–4:3 with similar themes in mind and we should read Philippians 1:27–30 with those themes in mind (especially citizenship). The one thing, then, Paul wanted the Philippians to get was this: “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.” (Phil 1:27 NLT). This is how Paul summarizes the Christian life: “Be a good citizen.” This brings up a host of questions. How are we good citizens? What does it mean to be “worthy” of the gospel? Why did Paul think this was the most important thing for the Philippians (and us) to do? We’ll answer these questions and more this Sunday. Join us at 10am at the Skyline Plaza to marvel that our citizenship is in heaven and to learn what it means to be a good citizen of heaven here on earth.Sunday Music

Paul’s appeals to Timothy: Exercise bold faith Stir up God’s gift within you (2 Tim 1:6-7). 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. – 2 Tim 1:6-7 Do not be ashamed of the gospel. But join in suffering for the gospel by the power of God (2 Tim 1:8). v. 1. Be strong in Christ’s grace. We cannot live the Christian life on our own, nor can we be spiritual leaders on our own. We are always dependent upon Christ’s grace for strength. Afflicted Saint, to Christ Draw Near by Connie Dever, John Fawcett Afflicted saint, to Christ draw near, Your Savior’s gracious promise hear; His faithful Word you can believe: That as your days your strength shall be. So, sing with joy, afflicted one; The battle’s fierce, but the victory’s won! God shall supply all that you need; Yes, as your days your strength shall be. v. 2. Entrust the truth of God to faithful men who will teach others The truth of God in the gospel must be passed to faithful stewards who will teach. vv. 3-4. Endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ (one word, Gk, sync & pathos) Paul uses military imagery often, particularly in context of struggling against opponents of the gospel. This is suffering due to opposition. A soldier does not get entangled with things that would distract him from single-minded dedication to his commander. Timothy should not let anything in life distract him from pleasing Christ, his commander. v. 5. As an athlete has to compete by the rules to win, so the Christian leader must suffer hardship to gain reward. v. 6-7. As the farmer works hard works hard and receives his reward. So the Christian leader must work hard, with all of God’s strength, and will receive his reward. 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. v. 8. Remember Jesus Christ [and his suffering] Paul implies that it was only through Jesus’ suffering that redemption was accomplished – and that even Jesus, God’s anointed (Christ), had to suffer. v. 9 Remember Paul and his suffering Paul suffers and is willing to endure so that believers can obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. His imprisonment does not hinder the gospel’s progress. In Phil 1:12, Paul said his suffering in prison turned out “for the greater progress of the gospel.” Paul’s endurance in suffering is powerful: “the elect obtain salvation in Christ with eternal glory.” v. 11. If we endure, we will also reign with Christ – Probably a saying or hymn. • If we died w/ him, we will live w/ him – our sinful self died with Christ, now we are united and alive with him • If we endure, we will also reign with him – We were designed to rule over earth, will reign w/ Christ in the next age • If we deny him, he will deny us - Whoever denies me before men, I will deny before my Father (Mt 10:33) • If we are faithless, he remains faithful - God will be faithful to his promises (2 Cor 1:18-20), - he will give safety in temptation (1 Cor 10:13), - he will give protection from the evil one (2 Thes 3:3) - he will sanctify and preserve his people (1 Thes 5:24)  9[God] saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. – 2 Tim 1:9-10

Selling a product or service that expands across multiple industries is possible when we realize that selling to everyone takes a team effort. Phil Sweeney worked in sales while in college because he enjoyed talking with people and problem-solving. Now, just two years after graduating, Phil is still working for Negotiatus, a fast-growing tech start-up business he first joined while in school. There were only a handful of employees when Phil first signed on. Now they are at 60 employees and Phil is loving every minute of it. SELLING TO EVERYONE It was exciting, as a salesperson, to have totally green fields ahead in terms of being able to work with, and sell to, any company. Phil had to quickly learn how not overextend himself. He had to learn how to hone in on the ideal customer profile. He had to understand who had the biggest need for the platforms he offers. When Phil first joined the sales team in its infancy, the company really could sell to everyone. It was a huge undertaking. They were also faced with the challenge of being a new company with little success to promote. They were shooting from all cylinders to determine where the biggest impact was in terms of the types of companies that they were attracting. From there, they were able to focus more and more on those types of clients. Phil dedicated blocks of time to the task. For 2-3 hours each day, he would not take any calls, schedule meetings, or go anywhere. Ideally, using blocks of time outside of selling hours, Phil would focus solely on who he was going to call the next day. He used many of the brilliant resources now available such as Sales Navigator, to find the people he needed to find and to learn more about them prior to the call. SHARING THE IDEAL CUSTOMER PROFILE Now that he is part of a larger sales team, he is having conversations not only within sales but also with success teams and operating teams to understand, in their opinion, which clients have been the most successful and easiest to work with. When selling to everyone is possible, it is easy to find yourself going nowhere fast. It is hard to know the correct verbiage for each industry. Selling in the medical industry, for example, is much different than selling in the automotive industry. It can be hard to land a good appointment until you narrow your focus to the industries that work best for your company. DIVIDE AND CONQUER Success begins when the teams can focus and then specialize across multiple industries. Phil believes it is important to identify as an expert in whichever field or department you are selling to. It is massively beneficial when you can speak the same language as the people you are selling to and when you can understand their struggles. Only then can you hone in on the pain points in order to solve those problems. Phil is closing sales now within 1-2 weeks of his first meetings because he has established himself as the expert in the field with the ideal solution/product. The need for his product is real and he is positioned to offer the main solution to satisfy that need. First and foremost, Phil recommends setting goals and dedicating time to the task. Most salespeople work in teams, so use that to your advantage. In Phil's team, they announce the number of new contacts, for example, that they hope to reach in the next two hours; it is written on a whiteboard for all to see – and then they get to it. At the end of the time period, they check in on each other. Did they get it done? Or do they need to work longer? They hold each other accountable. Get familiar with the industry. Share tips and resources. Google Alerts, for example, is an excellent tool to stay on top of specific topics in a particular industry which can help you at every stage of your pipeline. Put in the time at the top of the funnel and it will pay off when it comes time to close the deal. In this manner, Phil's sales team is leading the pack with a 115-150% quota attainment on a month-to-month basis. As a company, they have seen month-to-month revenue growth between 15-30%. STAY HUNGRY, STAY HUMBLE Everything is measured by the week or the month; even the hourly way of team progress is measured. It all resets to zero at the end of each period, so don't hang your hat on a certain closed deal or a really good day of selling; stay humble. You've got to start each day mentally fresh and hungry again. “SELLING TO EVERYONE” EPISODE RESOURCES Reach out to Phil via email at PSweeney37@gmail.com, or give him a call at 631-901-2685.  He is also active on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn as PhillipSweeney. STUDY QUESTIONSWhat is a hypocrite and why does Jesus not want us to be like them – especially when we pray? What does it mean they "have their reward in full"? What are they missing by settling for this kind of reward? Within the context of this verse why do you think Jesus instructs to pray in secret? Is this a rule to be followed when we pray? What deeper spiritual truth about prayer is Jesus getting at than just the mechanics of prayer? What are the appropriate venues for prayer? In what way would the venue and situation influence the prayer? I.e. individual, corporate, worship service, thanksgiving, meal, dedication... What does it mean to pray using "meaningless repetitions"? Give some examples. What is the error behind praying with many words? Why do you think Jesus gave the disciples a sample prayer? What does it mean to "pray in this way"? What important elements of prayer become evident as you read through verse 9 – 13? In Phil. 4: 6 scripture tells us to be anxious for nothing. What does that mean? In what way does prayer offer the solution to our anxiety? What is supplication? Why is thanksgiving to be included in our prayers, especially when we are anxious? Why is it important that we let our "request be made known unto God" when Matt. 6:8 tells us God already knows our needs before we pray? Where and when have you personally seen God answer your prayers in an unmistakable way? In what way are you going to apply what you have learned about prayer from this passage this coming week?

Are Millennials Really Fueling the Amenities Arms Race|An interview with Peter Armstrong Millennials may have caused a 31 percent uptick in houseplant sales in 2016, but are they also responsible for the “amenities arms race” happening in urban centers across America? According to Peter Armstrong, Vice President at The Georgetown Company, the answer is simply: no. It turns out that this much hyped generation isn’t so different from their Baby Boomer or Generation X predecessors when it comes to choosing where and how to live, and many Millennials may not even have the disposable income to live in the trendiest areas of town. Gensler’s Residential Practice Area Leader Phil Esocoff had a conversation with Peter to talk about how amenities in residential apartment spaces can contribute to increased well being across generations, how developers and leasing companies are reimagining what amenities can be, and which amenities will stand the test of time. Rooftops and gyms and community pools – oh my! The Washington Post recently reported on a National Apartment Association study that surveyed 100,000 individuals across 35 U.S. states on which amenities in modern apartments provide the highest return on investment for owners and operators, and which are the most popular among tenants in apartment communities. The results found that half of the top 10 offerings centered around bringing people together, favoring smaller units that allow for larger club rooms and common areas. In Phil’s conversation with Peter, the two discuss how, in fact, communal activities like discounted gym classes within residential buildings and the vibrancy of the neighborhood outside are becoming increasingly attractive amenities for tenants as opposed to more traditional offerings. Phil: You claim to be an aging millennial… What do you think the future of millennials will be in buildings as they age? Peter: Oftentimes, when you hear the word millennial used in media, it... feels a bit of a slur, so I'm here to speak on behalf of all of us, that we're not snake people. We're not aliens. We're just the next generation coming down the line. I think there's a lot of obsession in the general media about millennials and their demographics, and their choices, and how that's affecting all facets of our society, culture, and economy. The building industry is no different, but I think [millennials are] attracted to the same things that we all generally are… There are plenty of buildings in town that everyone thought would have an entirely millennial market, and you have plenty of people in there well beyond their upper 30s that are attracted to living in a great building that has efficient layouts with a high-quality finish. It's not just millennials who like the rooftop experience. It's not just millennials who want a nice gym. I think it's most people in an urban setting, so I don't lose a lot of sleep over whether XYZ project is going to be the coolest, hippest shiny object that's going to attract the millennial. Phil: Do you think it's more a taste-culture issue? Because I think there are people who like to live in buildings of a certain character and layout and live in certain neighborhoods, and those people could be of any age. Peter: I think that it's much more driven by cultural factors and a taste preference than it is a pure age and cohort. I think there's a certain type of person who's really attracted to the vibrancy of an urban environment, and... there are certain millennials that like that, and there's certain people that are Generation X and above that like and are attracted to the same experience. It's much more neighborhood-driven, and about what's going on outside the building, in the neighborhood, within six blocks. It's got to work for the person's lifestyle, right? It's got to be convenient to get to and from work. It's got to fit the budget. I think you're just much better off focusing and making sure that you're building a great product that has the elements that are going to attract all the people that want to be in that environment rather than trying to design a product and obsessing over whether you need a Twitter wall to drive tenant attraction and tenant retention. I think you don't need those types of gimmicks. You just focus on a great building with high-quality, nice finishes in a good location, and you're going to be just fine. The message of Philippians is the Christian life is “joyful” and, therefore, we should “rejoice.” The Christian life is the best of all lives to live, but sometimes there are things that “rob” us of the joy of Christianity. In Phil. 3:1-11, Paul warns us about those things.

This day is a time to look back at 2016 and reflect on what the year was like for you. How was 2016? Tough? Painful? Tiring? Great? Full? Disappointing? How would you sum it up? Its also a time to look ahead at 2017. What lies ahead? Are you hopeful? Fearful? Anxious? Maybe you are aware that the month of January was named for the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions and doors and gates and time. He was pictured with two faces, one looking forward and the other backwards. In Phil 3, Paul gives some great practical advice on dealing with the past and future. How much time do you spend dwelling on the past? Focusing on past hurts causes deep roots of bitterness that choke out joy and hope and progress. Focusing on past success causes complacency and laziness and even self righteousness. So what do we do with our past? How do we handle the future? Listen in as Pastor Steve shares from Philippians chapter three as we head into 2017!

Dr. Phil Maffetone: The Future of Athletic Peak Performance

The B.rad Podcast

*My eye-opening conversation with this radical thinker continues, and we focus on an interesting subject, the future of athletic peak performance.* Back when Phil was working on his book, 1:59 ( https://www.amazon.com/Sub-Two-Hour-Marathon-Within-Runners-Training/dp/1510734341/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=phil+maffetone&qid=1569198797&s=gateway&sr=8-9 ) he wrote about Eluid Kipchoge, and we start by discussing him and his Nike partnership, and why it is that Phil advises athletes to be careful when committing to sponsors. In Phil’s mind, Kipchoge has not peaked yet as he is only 34 years old, so he poses the question: “What is going to be the nudge for Kipchoge?” for him to reach 1:59. Phil imagines that running barefoot would be the key to pushing him under the 2 minute mark, based off the fact that Kipchoge grew up running barefoot. This is what led him to develop the “spring mechanism” - when your (bare) foot hits the ground, the foot absorbs that gravitational energy, which is stored mostly in the tendons of the foot and the leg, and the body is then able to take that energy and convert it into mechanical energy. “A bio-mechanical balancing act” is the term Phil has coined to describe athletes who deal with a huge amount of wear and tear on their muscles during training - even the people who train properly. The joints, bones, ligaments, and soft issue are all affected, but it is the muscles that bear the most weight (pun intended!) and therefore, need to recover. Phil uses the analogy of a race-car: if you never fine tune your engine, you simply won’t run as well. Similarly, he has always worked to help athletes balance their muscles, sometimes literally up until the moments before they started running - it’s that important. As Phil explains, a lot can be learned by simply evaluating someone’s gait and posture - if you look at someone’s gait, and you see any irregularity, then you know it’s from muscle imbalance. The next step is to identify the cause of that imbalance, after which Phil will use biofeedback to correct it. When it comes to selecting the right practitioner you, Phil suggests going with someone who’s experienced with working with athletes and understands how diet affects the muscles. At the end of the day, he says, “I don’t care how you fix muscle imbalance as long as you actually correct it” and advises asking around and doing your research to figure out who does muscle testing. When it comes to marathons, “People are slowing down, and they have been for decades,” Phil comments. This is obviously tied to a general increase in excess body fat, and Phil emphasizes that diet actually comes before training, as it greatly affects it. The bottom line is, “You cannot run away from a bad diet.” Should we rethink the premise of certain endurance goals that have endured? Is it a young person’s game that begins to become unhealthy once we hit a certain age? Not at all, says Phil. Age is not the factor - it is the health and fitness level of the individual that matters most, but of course, there are always outliers in any field. We examine the boundaries of intense workouts - how do you know when you’ve pushed it too far? - and Phil explains what muscle soreness signifies, as well as what you need to do in order to steer clear of pain, fatigue, and soreness. We then wrap up with why you need to prioritize warming up (it’s equal in importance to getting adequate protein!) and why you need to avoid synthetic vitamins. Regardless of how fit you are, your athletic goals, or age, you will surely benefit from this informative episode thanks to Phil’s amazing advice and truly extensive knowledge of the human body. TIMESTAMPS: Years ago, Dr. Maffetone predicted athletes breaking the 2 hour marathon record. [04:28] Phil asks how much are you going to let your sponsors dictate your public appearances? [07:31] Eliud Kipchoge grew up running barefoot.  How does performance change with shoes? [11:00] The wear and tear on the body primarily comes for the muscles. [14:06] If you look at someone’s gait and posture and see irregularity, it is because there’s muscle imbalance. [17:11] If there is muscle imbalance, what kind of practitioner does one want? [19:08] As a whole, except for the elite athletes, people running marathons are slowing down due to excess body fat. [21:04] Do we need to rethink our goals as we advance in years? [26:22] What about the explosive sports? [30:39] If you were a jock back in the day, are there some modifications that you would make to the training approach on account of being 50 or 60? [33:53] Having a great aerobics system is a requirement. [36:31] No pain, no gain? [41:37] How do you evaluate the intensity of a workout? [43:21] When you get sore, the muscle is weaker. [47:10] What you want to do is avoid pain, fatigue, and soreness. Here’s how. [51:55] You can train the brain to contract more muscle fibers. [54:59] People who put on a lot of bulk are not necessarily stronger. [58:32] Warming up before doing these exercises is important as well is getting enough protein.. [01:05:16] Synthetic vitamins can hurt. If your vitamin D is not at a good level, there’s no way you can perform, even if you do everything else right.  [01:07:10] Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-get-over-yourself-podcast/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
