Bruce has found another hero to obsess about, no surprise it's the world's fastest marathoner: Eluid Kipchoge (a stoic adjacent runner.) In today's episode we break down some of the many lessons that can be learned from him through the lens of Marcus's beautiful quote in chapter 11: "The pythagoreans bid us in the mornings to look to the heavens that we may be reminded of those bodies that continually do the same things and in the same manner perform their work, and also be reminded of their purity and nudity. For there is no veil over a star." We explore the lessons of humility, discipline and the power of doing real work that Kipchoge shows us. And we give you an unforgettable quiz at the end of the show...

Today on the Run Culture podcast I was extremely fortunate to chat to Andy Jones. As a sport scientist he has worked with many elite athletes over the years. Including, the former womans Marathon World Record Holder; Paula Radcliffe, along with also being employed by Nike to help Eluid Kipchoge in the Breaking 2 Marathon Project. I thoroughly enjoyed this chat, Andy is a fountain of knowledge, he has devoted his whole professional life to attempting to improve our understanding of the physiology of endurance performance. We start the podcast, going over his own running career and what he learnt from his own childhood hero; Steve Jones. We then define and discuss the ins/outs of 'Running Economy' and 'Physiological Resiliency' at length, using Andy's experiences with Paula and the Nike Breaking 2 Project.

Andrew M Jones PhD DSc is Professor of Applied Physiology in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. He's internationally recognized for his research in the control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism; causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease; respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise; and sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. Jones is Editor-in-Chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and serves on the Editorial Board of six other international journals in sports medicine and exercise science. Prof Jones has acted as a consultant to a number of governing bodies of sport or commercial companies including UK Athletics, the English Institute of Sport, Gatorade Sports Science Institute and Nike Inc. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. Thanks for joining me for an impromptu mid-week special of the show with Eluid Kipchoge's bottle man - Claus-Henning Schulke Schulke, 56, is an amateur triathlete and works as a project manager for a Berlin-based construction company. He was a marathoner himself but switched to triathlon in his twenties. He, however, remained a fan of the long-distance event for years. He has been volunteering at the Berlin Marathon since 1998. When Kipchoge arrived at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Tuesday, September 20 ahead of the marathon on Sunday, September 25, Schulke surprised his dear friend and discussed their bottle-passing strategy for the event. Schulke's technique is to wear a Kipchoge nameplate on his forearm, which allows Kipchoge to know where his water is and therefore he does not have to break stride or lose focus. The two first knew each other when Schulke volunteered to be Kipchoge's water passer in 2018 at the Berlin Marathon. He was instrumental in Kipchoge's world record performance at the event. I called Claus yesterday to learn about the historic world record run and his crucial role.  A huge thank you to Claus for taking the time to talk to me  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebigrunpodcast/message

Eluid Kipchoge's sub-2-hour marathon effort is a major breakthrough. However, the training advice on the internet and the science quoted t support it can be confusing, and even at times conflicting. In this episode, we tried to put together a structure for endurance training based on the latest science. Host Aditi speaks with Coach Ron George, where he talks about the evolution of endurance training and the latest science, and fuses it with his on-ground experience working with endurance athletes. He discusses his week of eliptical training and ponders whether he can make a splint of some sort to allow him to drive to work - pretty sure the discussion offers some options that are legal and safe...   Aaron has recorded the most volume in a long while and tops the mileage this week amongst the hosts. He's spent most of it indoors on his Noble Pro and has been jet setting across the world for his easy runs, much to Clowesy's delight on Strava. He also discusses his first marathon type long run in a long while, which goes far better than he ever expected.   Thanks for listening, have an alright week everyone. Aaron, Matt, Josh and Ruth

Phil Maffetone: Barefoot breakthroughs, getting stronger, keeping fit as you age

After the awesome big picture show about healthy living and avoiding the manipulations of today’s mainstream media and marketing forces, Brad welcomes Dr. Maffetone back for a show on the usual popular topics of endurance peak performance. First, Phil discusses the amazing marathoner Eluid Kipchoge, and how he can finally hit the magic 1:59 barrier. First, running barefoot would achieve a significant time improvement! Yes, hard to do if you have been in shoes for years. Second, getting muscular balance treatments, because hard training creates imbalances that increase injury risk and slow you down. Dr. Phil says even extreme endurance goals are not necessarily unhealthy for older folks if you adopt the correct approach. He cites examples of world class endurance athletes around age 40, and also recommends that you have more patience with recovery as you get older. On the topic of explosive training, Phil relates how important this is even for endurance athletes, who “epidemic” show physical and functional weaknesses. Try to add a vertical jump test to your MAF test as an excellent fitness marker. If you can’t exceed 12 inches from a standing start, you best add more explosive training.  A couple great ideas: Sprint for 7 seconds several times, with long recovery periods between (~30 seconds) and repeat a couple times per week. Consider Maffetone’s “slow weights” idea, where you perform a single set of a single exercise, but repeat it several times a day. I have a hexagonal deadlift bar in my backyard for this purpose. Choose a weight that’s about 80% of your single rep absolute max and do about six reps. If you do this several times a day, you are talking about a fantastic increase in strength in a short time! What you are doing with these brief workouts is recruiting more of your existing muscle fibers to perform a function. This differs from the hypertrophy workouts when you break down and exhaust muscles, slam down protein shakes, and prompt the growth of bigger muscles—often these are for looking rad only and can obviously compromise endurance performance. With these brief single set, single exercise sessions, you avoid the risks and the adverse consequences of post-workout muscle soreness, something Brad complained to Phil about and he confirms is no bueno. Soreness leaves the muscles weak for a couple days, and if you get sore a couple times a week, well…FYI, did you know Ben Franklin was the one who made up “no pain, no gain?” Always fun insights from Dr. Phil. Enjoy, and check out his PhilMaffetone.com website and products! It's time to start thinking about running barefoot. [00:00:43]  We are now close to an athlete breaking two-hour marathon. Look at Eliud Kipchoge. [00:03:41]  Muscles imbalance is a big concern. Posture and gait are important. [00:12:59]  Running at the same pace with muscle imbalance could raise your heart rate 5 or 6 beats! [00:15:27]  What kind of practitioner would deal with muscle imbalance? The assessment is really important. [00:17:19]  The times of the marathon have decreased in recent years. Why have people slowed down?  [00:19:18]  Diet is primary to the training. You cannot run away from a bad diet. [00:22:51]  As we age, do we need to rethink the basic premise of these endurance goals? [00:24:16]  What about in the explosive sports? [00:29:04]  As you age, are there some modifications one would make to their training? [00:31:53]  What kind of parameters do you recommend to assess whether the subject is recovered and ready for another explosive workout?  [00:36:18]  Overtraining or undertraining? [00:38:49]  Shouldn't we expect muscle soreness after workouts? [00:41:13]  What is a jump test? [00:42:58]  How can we build strength without getting weak muscles? [00:47:00]  We can train the brain to learn to contract more muscle fibers within the muscle. [00:51:57]  If you are not eating enough protein, it will be difficult to get stronger. [01:01:56]  Not all vitamins you buy in a jar are healthy. Do we get enough Vitamin D? [01:03:53]  LINKS: Eliud Kipchoge Phil Maffetone BradKearns.com Pocket Hercules QUOTES: You cannot run away from a bad diet! (Tim Noakes) We have a serious epidemic of weakness throughout the world. Deconstructing Eluid Kipchoge’s Incredible Marathon World Record

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2018 34:19

This episode was inspired by awesome email commentary from a devoted listener, Primal Endurance advocate, and accomplished collegiate level runner Jack McGinness. Kipchoge recently ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:01.39, shattering the previous record and closing in on the previously unfathomable 2:00 barrier. Kipchoge’s pace per mile was an astonishing 4:39. Most accomplished runners would be hard-pressed to match this pace for even a half a lap around a track, but Kipchoge can continue at this speed for 26 miles. This is truly one of the most phenomenal athletic performances of the past 100 years.  What’s interesting about Kipchoge’s story is that, just as Dr. Phil Maffetone predicted in his commentary on the Primal Endurance Mastery Course, Kipchoge has become the greatest marathoner in history by training easier than other elite marathoners. Strange as it may seem, this guy rarely exceeds what we call MAF pace. Oh, Kipchoge runs like the wind, on muddy trails and high altitude in Kenya, but he explains that he tries to never exceed 80% of his capacity, instead of saving his energy for races.   He is super consistent, super disciplined, but he never trashes himself, never gets sick or injured, and doesn’t even taper for races. He runs 110-120 miles a week with great discipline and joy. Hit some of the links in the show notes and learn how wise and thoughtful he is—far more than just a running machine! You will learn some interesting insights from this show, particularly when you compare and contrast Kipchoge’s eminently sensible approach with the ridiculous Type A chronic approach that is still the norm in America, particularly in the collegiate and high school systems. The cover of the book Primal Endurance says “Slow down to go faster,” and now Kipchoge has actualized this concept. SHOW NOTES: In the Berlin Marathon in September 2018 this runner came up with a 2:01:39 time. This computes to an average 4:39 mile!! [00:01:36]  Running is a most satisfying sport.  But you have to do it right. The running community in the past has been doing it disastrously wrong! [00:04:05]  Doping continues to be common in the running world. [00:06:28]  What is Kipchoge training method? He never over-extends himself. [00:09:53]  The only thing that is in somewhat conflict with the primal theory is he has a constant schedule. [00:15:42]  If you are a person who's trying to break the three-hour mark or the four-hour mark, just apply these insights to your relative example. [00:20:28]  The general problem with many American distance runners is too many type A runners who obsess over their workouts and paces and then fail to take care of the little things. [00:21:59]  Kipchoge is going to change the game. *My eye-opening conversation with this radical thinker continues, and we focus on an interesting subject, the future of athletic peak performance.* Back when Phil was working on his book, 1:59 ( https://www.amazon.com/Sub-Two-Hour-Marathon-Within-Runners-Training/dp/1510734341/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=phil+maffetone&qid=1569198797&s=gateway&sr=8-9 ) he wrote about Eluid Kipchoge, and we start by discussing him and his Nike partnership, and why it is that Phil advises athletes to be careful when committing to sponsors. In Phil’s mind, Kipchoge has not peaked yet as he is only 34 years old, so he poses the question: “What is going to be the nudge for Kipchoge?” for him to reach 1:59. Phil imagines that running barefoot would be the key to pushing him under the 2 minute mark, based off the fact that Kipchoge grew up running barefoot. This is what led him to develop the “spring mechanism” - when your (bare) foot hits the ground, the foot absorbs that gravitational energy, which is stored mostly in the tendons of the foot and the leg, and the body is then able to take that energy and convert it into mechanical energy. “A bio-mechanical balancing act” is the term Phil has coined to describe athletes who deal with a huge amount of wear and tear on their muscles during training - even the people who train properly. The joints, bones, ligaments, and soft issue are all affected, but it is the muscles that bear the most weight (pun intended!) and therefore, need to recover. Phil uses the analogy of a race-car: if you never fine tune your engine, you simply won’t run as well. Similarly, he has always worked to help athletes balance their muscles, sometimes literally up until the moments before they started running - it’s that important. As Phil explains, a lot can be learned by simply evaluating someone’s gait and posture - if you look at someone’s gait, and you see any irregularity, then you know it’s from muscle imbalance. The next step is to identify the cause of that imbalance, after which Phil will use biofeedback to correct it. When it comes to selecting the right practitioner you, Phil suggests going with someone who’s experienced with working with athletes and understands how diet affects the muscles. At the end of the day, he says, “I don’t care how you fix muscle imbalance as long as you actually correct it” and advises asking around and doing your research to figure out who does muscle testing. When it comes to marathons, “People are slowing down, and they have been for decades,” Phil comments. This is obviously tied to a general increase in excess body fat, and Phil emphasizes that diet actually comes before training, as it greatly affects it. The bottom line is, “You cannot run away from a bad diet.” Should we rethink the premise of certain endurance goals that have endured? Is it a young person’s game that begins to become unhealthy once we hit a certain age? Not at all, says Phil. Age is not the factor - it is the health and fitness level of the individual that matters most, but of course, there are always outliers in any field. We examine the boundaries of intense workouts - how do you know when you’ve pushed it too far? - and Phil explains what muscle soreness signifies, as well as what you need to do in order to steer clear of pain, fatigue, and soreness. We then wrap up with why you need to prioritize warming up (it’s equal in importance to getting adequate protein!) and why you need to avoid synthetic vitamins. Regardless of how fit you are, your athletic goals, or age, you will surely benefit from this informative episode thanks to Phil’s amazing advice and truly extensive knowledge of the human body. TIMESTAMPS: Years ago, Dr. Maffetone predicted athletes breaking the 2 hour marathon record. [04:28] Phil asks how much are you going to let your sponsors dictate your public appearances? [07:31] Eliud Kipchoge grew up running barefoot.  How does performance change with shoes? [11:00] The wear and tear on the body primarily comes for the muscles. [14:06] If you look at someone’s gait and posture and see irregularity, it is because there’s muscle imbalance. [17:11] If there is muscle imbalance, what kind of practitioner does one want? [19:08] As a whole, except for the elite athletes, people running marathons are slowing down due to excess body fat. [21:04] Do we need to rethink our goals as we advance in years? [26:22] What about the explosive sports? [30:39] If you were a jock back in the day, are there some modifications that you would make to the training approach on account of being 50 or 60? [33:53] Having a great aerobics system is a requirement. [36:31] No pain, no gain? [41:37] How do you evaluate the intensity of a workout? [43:21] When you get sore, the muscle is weaker. [47:10] What you want to do is avoid pain, fatigue, and soreness. Here’s how. [51:55] You can train the brain to contract more muscle fibers. [54:59] People who put on a lot of bulk are not necessarily stronger. [58:32] Warming up before doing these exercises is important as well is getting enough protein.. [01:05:16] Synthetic vitamins can hurt. If your vitamin D is not at a good level, there’s no way you can perform, even if you do everything else right.  [01:07:10] Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-get-over-yourself-podcast/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
