Recently, I was inspired by a number of things to re-release this conversation that I had with Phil Rosenthal from his Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil started, which just released its sixth season. Aside from that Phil, is best known as the creator, writer, and executive producer for the sitcom Everybody loves Raymond. In this conversation we talk about the importance of travel, food and relationships, and the creative process of pulling from your life to make things. All of this felt like a perfect storm for right now to re-release this episode. I was inspired not only by seeing season 6 of Somebody Feed Phil released, but also thinking ahead to American Thanksgiving coming up soon, and the food aspect of that as well as I was talking to a friend, I recounted all the traveling that I had done this year, more traveling than I've done in. And of course the great food I had while traveling. Mentioned in this episode: You're Lucky You're Funny Exporting Raymond I'll Have What Phil's Having Somebody Feed Phil Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Prepare for your mouth to absolutely water with this week's deliciously fascinating conversation. Bill Esparza, author of the book, LA Mexicano, and James Beard Award winner in journalism for his coverage of the LA taco scene, is considered one of the country's leading experts on Mexican food. In addition to the curating services Bill provides for Los Angeles restauranteurs and venues including The Fields in downtown LA, Bill has also served as the behind-the-scenes curator and on-air contributor for numerous television projects including two seasons of Emmy award-winning The Migrant Kitchen, Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown, Andrew Zimmerman's, Bizarre Foods, I'll Have What Phil's Having, Huang's World and Top Chef. Bill writes about Mexican food for LA Times, GQ Mexico, Roads & Kingdoms, Eater, Los Angeles Magazine, Food & Wine Magazine and others. A noted saxophone player, Esparza has traveled and eaten extensively throughout Mexico, Latin America, and, of course, Southern California. In today's episode we discuss: The taco that he's currently obsessed with How culture (and his abuela's kitchen) fueled his passion for food His travels in Latin America and how his experiences influenced his life and writing The evolution of the LA Mexican food scene

If you've been listening to the podcast pretty regularly the last couple of months, then you have heard Melanie and me mention the Netflix series Somebody Feel Phil over and over again. Melanie started watching (after Karen Howell recommended it, if memory serves), and then I started watching, and here we are, roughly six weeks later, both certifiably obsessed with it. Because it is FANTASTIC. So you can imagine how delighted we are to tell you that, in one of the most unexpected occurrences in lo, all of our podcasting years, Phil Rosenthal from Somebody Feed Phil is our guest on this episode. Sometimes life comes at you fast, my friends. You'll hear the story of how all of this came to be at the beginning of the episode, and then for the rest of the episode you'll hear Phil be super funny and wise and inspiring. It was such a joy to talk with him, and it was also confirmation that 1) we cannot wait to travel again and 2) Phil really is our Quarantine All-Star. Next week we'll be back with our usual shenanigans, and it'll just be Melanie and me again. Unless Melanie gets in touch with Jimbo Fisher - and in which case, all bets are off. Enjoy, y'all! The credit for this whole episode goes to Melanie, who suggested that we have a conversation about the books that have shaped us over the course of our lives. So what we have here in Ye Olde Episode 193 is a discussion of Books We Have Loved - from childhood to adulthood. And it's not just that we love these books; it's also that, in big ways and small ways, these books have shaped us in some significant ways. I swore and declared that I was absolutely not going to do links for all of these books - I even say that in the episode intro - but lo and behold I ended up adding links for almost everything that's currently in print. Click at will, my friends. And just FYI: we are not condoning every situation in every book, we are not endorsing every author of every book, we are not subscribing to every philosophy in every book. We're just saying, HEY, THIS MEANT SOMETHING TO US, and by the way, that may have happened despite the fact that the author really enjoys the F word. Enjoy, y'all! p.s. We also talk about Hamilton again. :-) Become a Patron! Kaytee and Mindy are handling this week while Meredith recovers from surgery. We are so glad to have Mindy step in during tough times! As we get started, you’ll hear our first advertisement on the podcast. We have always said we’d be extremely discerning about advertisers, so Book of the Month was a perfect match for us, since we are both loyal (paying) customers. We hope you’ll give them a try and get your first book for just $9.99 when you use the code CURRENTLYREADING! If you’re interested, please use our link so they know we sent you. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a bookish sticker from an online friend, and a “book dictionary” brag that occurred at a local bookstore. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Every single book this week was a “turn” from the previous title discussed, so we are running the gamut. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about reading while sick. Mindy and Kaytee were both battling viruses this week of different kinds, so we talk about how illness effects our reading lives and the tips we have to keep reading while you’re not feeling 100 percent. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got a brick of a biography and a collection of stories that will open your heart. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. Meredith and Kaytee are giddying up with a new episode of spicy opinions. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a new, most favorite ever, local bookshop win, and a triumphant return to the library. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got a brief Slow But Steady update to share with you and then it’s onward to our deep dive. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about cozy mysteries. Why read them? ALWAYS QUIT. That doesn’t mean you should bail when things are hard. It means that you are not a victim to your circumstances. If the level of the project that you’re taking part in is not up to your standards, you have to leave. You can’t let other people ruin you. Your name is all you have. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with writer and producer Phil Rosenthal where he shared the secret to doing work that you’re proud of. Philip Rosenthal is the creator, writer, and executive producer of the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. It is axiomatic that the big three “over the top” (OTT) streaming services—Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime—dominate what and how we watch television. But how has this revolution in long-form video consumption affected the creative process? How has the new media paradigm altered the way media properties find and build an audience? And what are the some of the opportunities and challenges creators face in successfully navigating this domain? On this episode of The Medium Rules, host Alan Baldachin sits down with John Bedolis and Rich Rosenthal of the hit Netflix food/travel show, Somebody Feed Phil. The show stars Phil Rosenthal—best known as the creator of the long-running and extremely popular network sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. The show features Phil on screen as host and narrator as he travels the great cities of the world seeking authentic culinary experiences and authentic moments of human interaction. Phil has been dubbed the “Borscht Belt Bourdain”, and he brings a very specific sensibility to the show which is part NYC Jewish outer borough (Phil grew up in Queens), part LA, and, like Parts Unknown, part an ode to human understanding derived through cooking and eating. Rich, who is Phil's brother, is an Executive Producer, and John is an Executive Producer and the Director. Somebody Feed Phil debuted on PBS as I'll Have What Phil's Having, and moved to Netflix after its first season. In this, it's third season, the show has found a groove. Gorgeously shot and produced, Somebody Feed Phil is lively, warm, funny and entertaining. On this podcast Rich, John and I will talk about the origin story and evolution of the show and their experiences and observations moving from public network television to the world of Netflix and OTT. This week our guest fills us with many decadent treats and no calories!Emmy-Award winning creator of "Everybody Loves Raymond," Phil Rosenthal, is still keeping us laughing with "I'll Have What Phil's Having" on PBS.
The first episode features my good friend Phil Rosenthal, who's a successful restaurant investor and the creator of Emmy Award-winning TV show Everybody Loves Raymond. PBS is now airing his latest creative endeavor, I'll Have What Phil's Having, a funny, big-hearted, intelligent food and travel show that gives me hope for the medium. Phil is smart, hilarious, and as generously spirited a human being as I know. On our podcast, you'll learn about Phil's adventures as an out-of-work actor, a successful sitcom creator, and yes, you'll have to listen to find out Phil's secret sauce: the advice that he got from legendary sitcom writer-director-creator Ed Weinberger (Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi) that I often use as a guidepost in my own creative endeavors. He'll also share some travel discoveries, restaurant pet peeves, and what we'd find in his desert island fridge.
