We're back! Phil and Ben kick off Season 2 of the podcast with a movie swap. They each put forward one of their favorite comedies: For Phil, it's I Love You, Man, a role-switch rom-com bromance that stars the untouchable Jason Segel. For Ben, it's The Naked Gun, a ridiculous police spoof classic. But first, find out what the guys have been up to on their break. Phil's been busy at the movie theatre and Ben has been, well, watching Outer Banks. But not Loki. For some reason. The boys team up for this week's WAYWA and break down Marvel's Black Widow, as well as the new off-screen battle between Disney and Scarlett Johansson. Phil Pinti is a full-time single parent, widower, as well as a military veteran, philosopher, and ultra runner. He lost his wife to cancer at the young age of 33, which left him reexamining his life and his purpose. Phil believes you can wallow in your story or use your experiences to push you forward. You can be your best advocate or your own worst enemy, but the good news is you can choose. Key Takeaways: It's not what happens to us in life that matters, it's what we do with what we've been given. Phil shares how he met his wife, Jen. Phil's wife made him a better person. Jen was 33 when she passed away from lung cancer. How did it happen? When Jen died so young, Phil felt jibbed by life. There's a natural order of things, and Jen wasn't supposed to pass before her grandparents or parents did. Statistically, men marry really quickly after the passing of their wife. It's usually 18 months after, but for women it's 5 years. What can you do tomorrow? This weekend? Set yourself up to look forward to something. We are either our own biggest advocate or our own worst enemy. It's difficult to be a single parent. When you lose your other half, you really have to do everything alone. Phil's children spent the weekend with their grandparents, and that's when he realized he was alone for the very first time in a big house. The loss really hit him. Phil shares what his mental state was like before and after putting his body through an ultra marathon. Anybody can have the excuse to have their story weigh them down. For Phil, Jen was a huge intersection and connector piece to his community. When he lost her, he also lost his circle of friends. People don't want to catch grief. Phil shares why he feels COVID has been a blessing to his family. We get to choose how we want to feel and act based on the day we face. We also need to set an example for our children because they internalize the stress you are projecting. We need to find what our story is about now. No one can give you your midlife crisis, you can only do that to yourself. Phil lost his love, but that doesn't mean he's going to just give up. Phil loved that his wife still stayed true to herself until the very end. He admires and loves her so much.
Long-term plans allow a vision to be passed along. They force us to have patience and perspective, and most importantly, they encourage the plan to be fluid, constantly being tweaked to achieve the ‘end goal.’ There are many days on the calendar that mark time. For Phil, April 30th and May 1st are two of those dates. Why are these dates significant to him? Listen in to learn about his long-term plan. Self-described “Business Purpose Guide” Phil Preston joins this week’s instalment to converse the need for purpose and direction for all businesses, regardless of size. Formally a Senior Credit Manager where he oversaw billions of dollars of investments, Phil became frustrated with poor corporate behaviours and symbolic acts of charity. In 2007, he redirected himself away from corporate investment and towards social and environmental challenge, and has been successfully running his business since. Using his expertise in applying purpose to boost business performance and social impact, he strives to grow companies’ enthusiasm for change. He guides SMEs through to multi-national corporations in the purpose, shared value and collaboration fields, also helping non-for-profits with business development and partnerships.Over the past 13 years, Phil has worked with hundreds of clients across many sectors and industries. He focuses on purpose based challenges, even developing a TED style talk titled ‘Why Philanthropy is for Dinosaurs’, which introduces individuals to the power of purpose in a user friendly way. His book, Connecting Profit with Purpose, also revolves on this topic. Phil emphasises the necessity for every business, no matter the size, to understand what their purpose is, more so now than ever. This projects enduring success, not just short term. For Phil, if you constantly focus and adapt to what society really needs, this not only allows stabilization but will also allow continuous growth for your business.

Ishmael Reed's 1972 novel Mumbo Jumbo is a conspiracy thriller, a postmodern experiment, a revolutionary tract, a celebration, and a magical working. It is a novel that, over and above prophetically describing the world we live in, creates a whole new world and invites us to move in. For Phil and JF, Mumbo Jumbo exemplifies art's creative power to generate new possibilities for life. It is also the perfect occasion for pinpointing the difference between the kind of magical thinking that fuels virulent conspiricism, and the more profound magical thinking which alone can save us from it. *Image: *Albrecht Dürer, Two Pairs of Hands with Book REFERENCES Ishmael Reed, Mumbo Jumbo (https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2017/aug/01/mumbo-jumbo-a-penguin-classic-2017-ishmael-reed) Harold Bloom, The Western Canon (https://www.openculture.com/2014/01/harold-bloom-creates-a-massive-list-of-works-in-the-western-canon.html) For more on Colin Wilson's concept of lunar religion, see The Occult (https://www.amazon.com/Occult-Colin-Wilson/dp/1842931075) Weird Studies, episode 36: "On Hyperstition" (https://www.weirdstudies.com/36) William S. In the prime of his life, Phil Kohn was suddenly forced to wrestle with issues of physical pain, emotional anguish, and the reality of his Mortality. Today--because of his trial--he is more alive than ever. How do you relate to discomfort, challenges, and suffering? Our relationship to those things determines what we will produce in our lives. In Phil’s case, courageous vulnerability has allowed him to turn his pain into a deeper understanding and deployment of his unique purpose in life. Phil’s story can help you learn to do that, too. Phil’s ensuing health saga wasn't something you'd wish on your worst enemy, but remarkably, it kicked off a complete life renovation for Phil. Today, Phil defines what it means to be alive very differently. When I listened to the recording after the interview to prepare it for release, I was so impressed with Phil's depth and breadth and authenticity. He's the sort of guy that you realize might have some of that genius quality about him, and he's got a really cool humility to go along with it. This episode is loaded with insight and application for life that Phil has mined from the past seven years of struggle. It's a lesson in personal courage, resilience, mastering pain, and discovering your unique purpose in life. Some of you may even be able to relate to the specifics of Phil's health battle, and if so, I know you'll be encouraged and inspired to press on. I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Meet Phil Kohn Phil Kohn worked as an investment banker on Wall Street and Sydney, Australia. Then he traveled the world building international lottery partnerships for a publicly-traded lottery ticket and gaming business. His fast-paced life in finance hit a brick wall in 2013 when a battery of complex chronic illnesses took hold. His life flipped on its head, Phil decided to become an entrepreneur--with his first business launching out of his Beijing apartment. Phil has since transformed into a Mandarin-speaking, ultra-health-conscious individual who is currently training in Neurodynamic breathwork while co-hosting a new podcast on breathwork called The Breath Circle. He also just wrapped up the pilot season of StratosCast - a podcast highlighting changemakers on the frontiers of health and wellness (click here for the soon-to-be-released season finale episode discussing tools to hack resilience and promote creativity and curiosity in life). During the day, he advises and coaches business founders while also building a conscious media business called Myndful. He and his partner Miranda currently live in New Mexico. Brick Wall to On-ramp In 2013, Phil was based in China--living the dream, as they say, a young man making his way in the world adventurously and with plenty of financial reward. Then a sudden bout of food and water poisoning put him on his heels and in the hospital and kicked off what has now become a seven-year health saga that includes chronic Lyme disease, mold and heavy metal poisoning, and significant mental health challenges. It has been a really rough road, to say the very least. Over time, though, the proverbial “brick wall” has become an unlikely on-ramp to a completely new perspective on life and what matters most. Where the On-ramp Has Taken Him There’s no way to sum up Phil’s seven-year journey of suffering and renewal in these shownotes. The full episode itself can’t do that. But we can tease out some of the major transformational points that have emerged so far for Phil so that we can learn from his story. The three most powerful transformational points that jumped out to me from my conversation with Phil are his new relationships with vulnerability, pain, and control. Vulnerability: Finding Strength in Weakness His physical plight forced him to demonstrate a level of vulnerability that he’d never experienced before as he sought understanding and solutions from a myriad of medical and alternative sources. And he found himself dependent on family and friends for care and encouragement in a way he never had before. It opened him up to deeper relationships with other conscious men and an unprecedented level of commitment to personal growth. For Phil, vulnerability has now become a valuable and trusted approach to living his best life. How many of us view vulnerability this way? The prevailing culture doesn’t. But Phil’s story turns the conventional wisdom of the prevailing culture on its head, and shows us that vulnerability can be a source of strength and a tool for transformational healing. What he was forced to discover because of the health saga, we can choose to discover ourselves to live an even more impactful life--starting today. Pain: From Enemy to Companion Phil’s physical and emotional pain was and still is significant. For a while, he looked for ways to numb or eliminate the pain altogether. As option after option disappointed, he slowly came to grips with the fact that pain was now his companion--albeit an unwelcome one. This acceptance led Phil to discover that by leaning into and exploring the pain non-judgmentally and with curiosity and a TINY bit of love and appreciation--”Thank you, body, for communicating with me so clearly”--the pain actually faded into the background of his life rather than being a big glaring blip on his radar screen. His choice to stop fighting has--paradoxically--led to a substantial measure of relief from the pain. What is your relationship with pain--whether it’s physical, mental, both, or something else altogether? My experience with life-long anxiety has taught me the same lesson that Phil has learned: Acceptance rather than Resistance is the way forward. Control: It’s Not All It’s Cracked Up to Be Phil tells a great story about hurtling down the road in a newly-leased, chartreuse BMW M4--feeling in control at the wheel of the ultimate driving machine going well over the speed limit...and simultaneously realizing that he was truly out of control as a man. That led to an overall reconsideration of what he was and what he wasn’t in control of in life. The ironic destination of his road trip was his first Men’s Circle experience, where he became the unwitting focus of the group’s attention and was first introduced to the healing power of deeper relationships with conscious men. The following day he participated in his first breath circle, followed by two days of 1-1 breathwork sessions — the beginning of a deep exploration into the power of transformational breathwork, a whole new world beyond yoga and pranayama. Control really is an illusion. There is precious little, if anything, that we can truly, 100% control. We insulate ourselves from that terrifying truth in myriad creative ways. Phil shows us that--counterintuitively--relinquishing “control” is a path to freedom. And for him, breathwork was the starting point for retraining his mind and body to embrace this incredibly simple but very elusive idea. Phil’s New Path It’s no hyperbole to say that Phil is a very different man today than he was seven years ago. He's still suffering the effects of his long-standing, complex health issues, for sure--but strangely more alive than ever. Today he seeks to beautify the world through his life rather than (and this is an overstatement for contrast) use or consume the world for his benefit. Meditation, breathwork, coaching, podcasting, and creative collaborations with others similarly orientated have become his new focus. His substantial innate gifts and accumulated experience and expertise are being brought to bear on projects that create deeper human connections and enrich the world. Links and info about some of those projects and ways to connect with Phil can be found at the end of these shownotes. To get the full benefit of this conversation with Phil, I hope you'll tune into the full episode! A Challenge, Should You Choose to Accept It If you are a regular listener to Andrew Petty is Dying, then you are already taking the road less traveled and growing in your resolve to be the person you were made to be and live the life you were made to live. Awesome. You're changing the world one day at a time because of that commitment. And even if this is your first episode, there's something in you that knows that you've got more to give. I've got a simple formula for human change: Insight + Action = Transformation. Insight on its own is energizing and enlightening. But without Action--without actually DOING something differently--we can't achieve the full Transformation that the Insight has to offer us. So I want to challenge you: What's your biggest takeaway from Phil's story? And what's one thing--just one thing--that you will actually DO differently as a result of that insight? Let's add a little pressure to the equation: If you knew with 100% certainty that you would die 5 years from today, what would you do differently today? Whatever it is, DO THAT THING. Get More Gold for Living With Phil Kohn! I’ve got a really cool opportunity for six lucky listeners: The first six listeners to email me will get to participate in an exclusive, live follow-up conversation with Phil on Wednesday, June 17, at 4:30pm Mountain Time, via Zoom. The Guys Like Us Podcast is joined with Phil Waldrep who is an author, speaker, founder, and CEO of numerous organizations including Phil Waldrep Ministries, Women of Joy, and Gridiron and Celebrators Conferences. In this episode we discuss the topic of betrayal and his book, “Beyond Betrayal: Overcome Past Hurts + Begin to Trust Again.” For Phil, this story begins close to home with one of his close business colleagues. We dive into the process that leads to healing and working back at establishing trust in another. In order to get a complete picture of the scope of betrayal, Phil moves beyond his experience to looking at what Jesus and the Bible says and does with this broken relationship. There are some signs that one can be proactive about to prevent these from happening and then there are some practices on one dealing with the effects once it has happened. You can find the book at Amazon and where books are sold!

Phil Cooke offers practical tips on producing short videos and using social media to establish your brand and gain followers in Part II of this series on branding. What do people think of when they think of your church, business or nonprofit? Strategic branding can establish an emotional connection with the audience you are working to reach. Here’s a recap of “Branding your Church or Nonprofit Part I” points to keep in mind about branding: Get on the radar. Visibility is just as important as ability. Everything communicates. People are unforgiving in the digital culture. Word travels fast! Understand the power of a name. Your name matters. Understand the language of design. It’s more important than most people think. As you consider your brand persona, understand the power of short videos. It’s the number one marketing tool in America. What story can you tell about your ministry or nonprofit? Stories of people whose lives have been changed are especially powerful. For example… More than 85% of internet users watch videos regularly. 46% of people said they would like to seek out more information after watching a short video. It’s a powerful open door to share more about what you do. Mobile viewers watch videos 3x longer than those on PC or laptops. Think of creating for small screens. You don’t need an elaborate set up to shoot a short video. Use your iPhone and tell your or somebody else’s story. For tips on how to produce short videos better, visit Phil’s blog at https://philcooke.com. When it comes to branding, take social media seriously. It’s a powerful tool for mobilizing people. For example… More than 50% of the world’s population is under 30. Social media is the #1 activity online. In 2009, studies show that online students are performing better than students taught in the classroom. Facebook is the largest “country” in the world. Stop thinking in terms of geographical boundaries for evangelism. Facebook is the future of ministry and evangelism coupled with face-to face evangelism. Tips for posting on social media: Make it personal. People want to know what it’s like to be you behind the scenes. Give them a glimpse of your struggles, your triumphs, what you do. Offer encouragement for others.Offer inspiration for others who are doing similar things as you, whether you’re a filmmaker, screenwriter or a ministry leader. Share practical tips.Share every day tips to help others be more effective. (i.e Soth Godin, Tim Farris) Ask questions. Ask the tough questions that get people talking. Post quotes from others. Growing your followers on social media is not about ego. It’s about reaching as many people as possible with your message. Bonus social media tip:Consider following people you respect and pay attention to what they say. Respond where appropriate from time to time. They may respond back… which means they’ve just showed your name to their millions of followers that follow you. It can bump up your followers! It’s a powerful tool to help your social media presence. Final thoughts… Branding is about a niche. For example, Alison Krauss has “owned” the bluegrass awards. She became famous by being the best in that niche category – and now she can do whatever she wants because of it! You can try to be the best director in Hollywood and compete with others like Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg. Or you can become the best director in a smaller niche category where you can become noticed, which can open up other categories for you down the road. It’s the same with authors and also, for example, with ministry leaders who have developed their niche and have gained followers because of staying in that category. (i.e. John Maxwell, Jack Hayford) For Phil, his niche is the intersection of faith, media and culture: How our faith uses media to interact with culture. No matter whether you’re a pastor, filmmaker or writer - choose a category and then be the best in the world in a narrow category. Branding is important today. It’s about getting your message to stand out in a cluttered culture. Do everything you can to position yourself! Be intentional with the message God has given you. Shape your perception so more people understand who you are, what your message is and how you can impact their life. – Phil Cooke For more insight on branding yourself, your ministry or organization, get Phil’s book “Unique: Telling Your Story in the Age of Brands and Social Media” available on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/2S9fDVF (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases which allows me to keep producing videos such as these.) PRESENTER BIO: John Sonmez is a software developer who founded SimpleProgrammer.com to help software developers and other technical professionals advance their careers and to live happier lives. John is author of the best-selling books “Soft Skills: The Developer’s Life Manual” and “The Complete Software Developer’s Career Guide” as well as host of the Simple Programmer podcast.’ EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Today’s episode of the I.T. Career Energizer Podcast is the 100th in the series, so it is a bit different, something special. Today, it is Phil Burgess himself who is being interviewed by John Sonmez. Phil first got involved in the IT industry in the mid-90s. He has developed and implemented new systems across numerous industries. Today, his focus is on helping others to develop their IT careers. He does so for everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.31) – Phil starts, by introducing John Sonmez, who was his very first podcast guest. Today, it is John who is going to be asking the questions and Phil who will be answering them. (1.32) – John starts by congratulating Phil on his 100th episode. A remarkable achievement, especially when you consider that most podcasters only record around 7 episodes before giving up. John thanks Phil for inspiring so many in the coding and development industry. (3.24) – In true I.T. Career Energizer podcast tradition, John asks Phil to share a unique career tip. Phil says that it is vital to look at your plans and goals, so that you can understand where your career is going. He encourages people to put together a five-year plan. Of course, no IT career is linear and the industry moves fast. So, the plan is just a guide to give you some direction and a way of recognizing where you are. Setting a guiding goal will help you to navigate through the ever-changing world of IT. Particularly, when you regularly review and tweak your plan. Phil explains that pairing a long-term plan with short-term goals is especially helpful. Short-term goals like learning a language, taking on a public speaking engagement, attending more conferences or writing articles are all helpful. Setting goals like these will help you to identify the best ways to grow your skills, network and ultimately move your career forward. (5.24) – At this point, Phil is asked to share his worst career moment. For Phil 4 or 5 years into his career he attended a meeting with senior management and a director. The project was not going well, so the director was trying to motivate everyone and identify the issues. At one point, the director asked a technical question that had clearly been fed to him. When Phil answered it became apparent that the director had no real understanding of the issue, so could not really follow the response. Instead of seeking more understanding, the director tried to belittle Phil in front of about 15 senior managers. It felt terrible. But, it taught Phil the importance of understanding your audience. John says he has had a few similar experiences. It reminds him of one of Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power, one of which is “never outshine the master”. (8.25) – How about your career highlight? For Phil being able to help others with their careers is the thing he enjoys the most. Running the podcast has enabled him to do this for more people, so for him this has been a career highlight. He has also enjoyed meeting and speaking to so many great professionals. As well as getting feedback from his audience and answering their questions. (11.18) – John asks Phil to share one thing that excites him about the future of a career in IT. Phil says the fact that the possibilities are limitless is the most exciting thing. He went on to say that “the genie is out of the bottle”. In the future, there will be opportunities that we cannot even conceive of right now. John concurs, for example, the idea of a driverless car would have been inconceivable up until a few years ago. Phil commented on the fact that technology touches every aspect of our lives and moves really fast. He goes on to speak about the amazing rate at which the motor car replaced the horse-drawn carriage. In just over a decade, a New York City road went from having one car and dozens of horses on it, in a photo, to being full of Model T. Fords. A strong example of just how fast technology changes our lives. (13.19) – What first attracted you to a career in IT? Phil explains that at university he did a building survey course, something that had nothing to do with technology, whatsoever. As part of the course he was introduced to AutoCAD which was running on Unix systems. For him, it was fascinating. By the time he left university, he was torn between pursuing an IT career working in the building surveyor field. Phil did not know what to do, so he took a local job with a pharmaceutical company. Fortunately, they were in the process of implementing a brand new system that a small software house had built for them. Phil got involved and off the back of that he was offered work by the software firm. That was it, Phil had officially commenced his IT career. (14.50) – What is the best career advice you were given? Phil paraphrased the best piece of advice he has received, so far, by saying - “It's all about the delivery of the message and be able to bring your message to life.” Someone he has worked for, a few times, explained to him that he needed to use stories and examples to add color to the message you are delivering. You have to make it come alive to catch people’s attention and help them to understand and recognize the importance of your message. (15.49) – If you were to start your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Says he would be trying out as many things as he can before settling on something more specific. In particular, he would attend as many conferences as possible, listening, learning and evaluating. He also said that he would focus more on solving problems rather than the actual technology used. (16.31) – What career objectives are you focusing on? Phil wants to grow his reach and influence so that he can help as many people as possible. He is also keen to finish his first book and get it published. Phil also says he wants to make sure that he keeps his podcast going strong. (17.20) – What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career? Listening is Phil’s number one non-technical skill. Really listening, rather than simply waiting for the break in the conversation, so you can make your point. Actually, hearing, absorbing and understanding what the other person is trying to say, then, taking the time to think before giving your response. (18.23) – John asks Phil for a parting piece of advice. Phil says you need to remember that “it’s your career.” Of course, you need to achieve the appraisal goals set out by the company you work for. But, you also need to make sure that what you achieve your own goals. It is up to you to progress your career, to learn what you need to know and make sure that you work on the right projects. BEST MOMENTS: (1.05) JOHN – “The IT industry is growing fast and going through a heap of challenges and it won't get better by accident. Thank you so much for playing your part.” (4.21) PHIL – “People need to set maybe a five-year plan in place, in terms of where they're going.” (6.49) PHIL – “Understand your audience when you're actually responding to things like questions.” (8.57) PHIL – “I'm quite keen to empower people.” (17.37) PHIL – “The ability to actually listen and think about what you're hearing before responding, is a really good skill to develop.” (19.25) PHIL – “Think about what you want. Take ownership and responsibility of your own career.” CONTACT PHIL BURGESS: Twitter: https://twitter.com/PhilTechCareer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philburgess/ Website: https://itcareerenergizer.com
