Is there any relationship more proverbial than the one between a writer and their desk? The location of laboured love, where words, dreams and fantasies flow from the tip of a pen or tap of a keyboard. Sitting down at his beloved desk, essayist Emmanuel Iduma contemplates the smooth wooden surface, his altar for creating stories. He remembers past kitchen tables, dusty library corners and even, as a child, working atop a collapsible ironing board. From Charlotte Brontë's mahogany davenport to Chinua Achebe's modest bureau, the desks of inspiring authors and poets are uncovered and, in between sentences, the rituals of writing arise. Waking in the early morning, Emmanuel walks through the streets of Lagos, stares longingly out of the window, daydreams and brews coffee before returning once again to his intimate workspace.Tremendous appreciation to Sara Serpa for the track from her album Intimate Strangers, which draws inspiration from Emmanuel Iduma's book, A Stranger's Pose (2018). Introduction and outro voiced by Johnny Vivash. Editing and sound design by Tobias Withers. Soundscape by The God in Hackney. Artwork by Karel Martens. Produced by the Extra Extra team. Sara Serpa is a singer/composer/improviser who, through her practice and performance, explores the use of the voice as an instrument. She was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and moved to New York in 2008, where she resides to this day, and where she creates ethereal music drawing from a broad variety of inspirations, including literature, film and visual arts, as well as history and nature. Her new album, Intimate Strangers, documents her collaborative and multi-media performance with Nigerian author Emmanuel Iduma, commissioned by John Zorn. Much of it revolves around Iduma's stories and stories of others that he collected in his book, A Stranger's Pose, and deals with such themes as migration and displacement. It also continues a narrative that Serpa began in 2020 with Recognition: Music For a Silent Film. While that album grappled with the legacy of Portuguese colonialism in Africa via her own family's history, Intimate Strangers gazes back at colonial powers from the vantage point of Africa itself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

“The decision to approach Elizabeth Williams has a long journey; indeed one connected initially more to prose, rather than drawing or visual art, and going back a couple of decades. In 1984 the writer/journalist and film and t.v. producer Dominck Dunne wrote an extraordinary essay for Vanity Fair magazine that had much influence upon me. Titled "Justice: A Father's Account of the Trial of his Daughter's Killer", the piece, including the aesthetic details and judgements of, say, the judge, the jury and the defendant's demeanor, as well as the psychological dimensions of Dunne's experience ranks for me as among the best writing of that decade at least (and of course launched him as a major crime reporter on O.J. Simpson and others). The connections between the many episodes on our show is immense. Dunne's daughter who was murdered was, of course, Dominque Dunne who at the time of her murder was not only featured in an episode of Hill Street Blues, the plot of which was precisely the subject of domestic violence, but was also prominent in a number of t.v. movies that Amanda Reyes and I discussed. (I had offered on my latest episode with her to do a whole show on The Day The Loving Stopped.) (Link to listen to the episode with Amanda Reyes mentioned can be found here:https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/episodes/INTIMATE-STRANGERS-episode-with-Amanda-Reyes-eoipb4/a-a49a1c5) Dominck Dunne's son, Griffin Dunne, is also quite accomplished. But that one essay had a long lasting effect on me. It made me most conscious of the plight of crime victims and their families and loved ones, and thus, the victim's rights movement. And this was further complicated still by my then anti-death penalty activism, as these two communities, both of which I have great sympathies, often have come into conflict. So the daughter Dominique Dunne was on track to be a major star in Hollywood and you can observe her work on Hill Street Blues as well as other productions. In turn this one essay caused me to be a moderate "true crime" buff. I should mention the late Michelle MacNamara in this regard, probably the best or most representative of this kind of interest. And all the while I was haunted not just by Dominck Dunne's written account but all of these high profile criminal cases. They are almost always used not only in televised news reports but in so many prominent documentaries. Of course one of the themes of this podcast is calling into question the boundaries around fine art, utilitarian art, and the commercial and obscure and so on. So you could say that this episode is very much in keeping with the spirit of our podcast. I was excited to discuss the things we did on this episode and I should note, not a moment too soon that the nature of our discussion is unconventional given the subject matter. We are discussing the the nature of the worst crimes that have been committed by men in the past forty plus years; you could say the nature of evil comes into play. But we are also discussing them in the terms of public service: Williams' illustrations of these perpetrators or predators are essential for the legal system as well as basic, everyday journalism, yet they also keep alive the tradition of portraiture and illustration, which is fundamental to the history of art. Also, speaking more generally, Williams' story is the story of anybody who endeavors to become good at something; meeting mentors or masters in the chosen field, and all the stops in the journey along the way. I hope you enjoy this as much as we did creating it! “ Links to Elizabeth’s beautiful work: http://www.elizabethwilliamstudio.com For a deeper look into Elizabeth's work, this episode, visit our show Facebook page, here: https://www.facebook.com/journeyofanaesthetepodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/support
Everyone is on their smartphones these days. Smartphones are literally 'the black boxes' of our lives. What would happen if you were to open up about everything you receive on your phone at a dinner with your friends? Our Monday guest, Leela joins us in the studio with the movie '완벽한 타인(Intimate Strangers).' Tune in and take some time to think about privacy and social media with us.
Inside the episode with Mitch Hampton "There are literally thousands of t.v. movies that Amanda Reyes and I could have covered. I often ask myself why I like this particular one so much. I think that, in all honesty it comes down to at least three reasons: the emotional directness of the content, the production style(s) of the period in which it was made and the many sided treatment of the social problem it attempts to represent. Emotional directness in dramatic art is a long and abiding interest of mine. Some of my favorite works of art happen to not be emotionally direct in the sense that I am thinking; this quality is not a requirement for me nor an assurance of greatness in and of itself. But when I am thinking of emotionally direct visual drama I do think of Intimate Strangers alongside Cassavetes' A Woman Under The Influence. The many sidedness is Intimate Strangers' greatest strength; it might also be the one quality likely to not be embraced or to be misinterpreted by a contemporary audience. Yet it is nevertheless a fact that people who do evil in the world are always human, never monsters. This film judges harshly Dennis Weaver's character but never stops letting us in on his interiority, his hopes, wishes and dreams. It is the role of the artwork to get into the weeds of all of this. Intimate Strangers ones fairly far for a television production. I always love speaking with Amanda Reyes. She has a love for and knowledge of popular culture that is positively encyclopedic - far greater than my own - and she brings to the subject an intelligence and sensitivity noamtmer the material. Her tastes appear to tend towards the highly supernatural and gothic; mine are decidedly more "naturalistic" but our shared love makes for most interesting episode if I may so myself.” Link to the film so you can enjoy it with us ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdzgl19EEqs&t=3394s Amanda’s Bio and Links to her beautiful work: Amanda Reyes is an archivist, author, film and television historian and academic. Old friends getting together. Matt has a weird feeling about seeing The Big Chill again. Is it the unlikeable yuppies? The cavalier attitude toward sex/fertilization/adultery? The ending? The fact that this is a movie about people realizing that they do not like each other? Maybe it's all of the above. Adam thought it did a good job slowly unrolling the relationship between the characters. They both agree that old republicans are not allowed to listen to Motown. Intimate Strangers features a great cast that feels like old friends. The banter and camera work made us feel like a fly on the wall. Matt left the movie with sadness (and hunger). Adam focused on the comedy and performances (41:30).Next week: The worst movie we paid money to see. Matt offers more revenge picks after Adam made him watch 4 H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. High and Low is a forward thinking crime drama. We dissect it in two parts 1) Stage play 2) precursor to Law & Order. Kurosawa frames the action in each scene with meticulous precision. We have a lot to praise. Somehow we manage not to do a samurai impression (1:35). Sorcerer opens with a bang, or four bangs. When action shifts to grimy jungle life, we are still captivated by the leads. Who knew truck driving could be so suspenseful? (46:12).Next Pod: Old friends getting together - The Big Chill (1983) and Intimate Strangers (완벽한 타인 )(2018). When it was decided that we wouldn’t be able to bring you interviews of the artists in our season due to the postponement of shows, I reached out to a number of people that I thought would be interesting to speak with. Kelly Freemon Craig, award winning film director and screenwriter was gracious enough to take me up on the offer. Kelly started out writing sketch comedy and spoken word poetry in college, then landed an internship in the film division of Immortal Entertainment, where she read her first film script and began to pursue screenwriting. She developed several screenplays during the 2000s, including a modern high school retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac and a comedic remake of the 2004 French drama Intimate Strangers for Paramount Pictures. One of her scripts, Ticket to Ride, caught the attention of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. He bought the script under his The Montecito Picture Company as a directing vehicle for Reitman. According to Reitman, the script was rewritten at least 15 times. The film was released, under the new title Post Grad. The film was instead directed by Shrek director Vicky Jenson and was released in 2009 and starred Alexis Bledel, Michael Keaton and Carol Burnett. In 2011, Kelly completed another script titled Besties and sent the script over to James L. Brooks. Brooks bought the script and was announced that Kelly would direct the film and Brooks would serve as a producer and mentor for her in directing her first film. The film was released by STX Entertainment in Fall 2016 under its new title The Edge of Seventeen to critical praise. I was curious about how she got her start in Hollywood… knowing that she spent some time in community theatre, we talk about her inspiration to go to Hollywood, her past projects and the film she is currently working on. The project that Kelly is currently working on is a film adaptation of “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” by Judy Bloom. A book that Ms. Bloom once said she would never let be adapted for the screen. I was curious how she planned to make the film version of a Judy Bloom book that would appeal, not only to children but also to the adult who may have grown up reading her books. Coming from an authentic place and full reverence for the material, Kelly’s plan seems to be well thought out. Despite the fact that I have never read “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret”, I know I will be anxiously awaiting its release next year.

New York City-based photographer Hugo Fernandes joins Randy Gue, curator of modern, political and historical collections at Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, for a conversation about his “Intimate Strangers” photography series. For 10 years, Fernandes initiated meetings with men through online and app-based cruising sites to set up photo shoots. The resulting portraits explore anonymity, intimacy, sexuality and digital culture. “One of the striking aspects of the series, specifically addressed in the talk, is how shifts in technology, in photography, and in networking applications affected Hugo’s work,” Gue says. “When he started this project in 2006, he posted ads on Craigslist. Much later in the series, he used apps like Grindr and Scruff.” Fernandes’ work is part of the Rose Library’s growing photography collection that explores issues of gender and sexuality, including the collections of Jon Arge, Dianora Niccolini, Len Prince, Billy Howard, and Catherine Kirkpatrick, as well as the library’s LGBT collections.

Alana Valentine—one of Australia’s most renowned and respected playwrights, whose work includes Parramatta Girls, Eyes to the Floor, Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah, Grounded and Cyberbile—reads the preface to the double edition of Brumby Innes and Bid Me to Love, two plays written by another of Australia’s literary treasures, Katharine Susannah Prichard. The introduction was written by Prichard's son, Ric Throssell.A little bit about Katharine Susannah PrichardPrichard was born in Levuka, Fiji, where her father was editor of the Fiji Times. She matriculated from South Melbourne College and worked briefly as a governess. She later taught in Melbourne studying English literature at night. In 1908 she travelled to London, working as a freelance journalist for the Melbourne Herald and, on her return, as the social editor of the Herald's women's page. In 1912 she left for England again to pursue a career as a writer and published two novels, The Pioneers and Windlestraws. She met the Australian Victoria Cross winner, Captain Hugo Throssell while away and in 1919 she married him and moved to Western Australia. Already a committed Communist in 1920, she was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia. In 1922 her only son Ric Throssell was born. While she was on a trip to the Soviet Union in 1933 Hugo Throssell committed suicide. From the 1920s until her death she lived at Greenmount, Western Australia, earning her living as a writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her novels include Black Opal; Working Bullocks; The Wild Oats of Han; Coonardoo; Haxby's Circus; Intimate Strangers; and the goldfields trilogy The Roaring Nineties, Golden Miles and Winged Seeds. Prichard was a member of the Communist Party of Australia until her death, and her political concerns were reflected in most of her published work. Her novels were published throughout the world and translated into numerous languages. In 1951 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.A few words about Brumby Innes and Bid Me to LoveWritten in the 1920s, Brumby Innes confronts the turbulent relations between the sexes and the races in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is published with another Prichard play from the 1920s, Bid Me To Love which, by contrast, is set among the fashionable rich in the lush hills outside Perth.
