In this episode, I'm breaking down a powerful shift that will completely change how you run your practice: moving from reactive, inconsistent months to predictable, controlled growth by learning how to stay one month ahead. If you've ever experienced the highs of a “great” production month followed by the stress of a slow one… this episode is for you. What You'll Learn: • Why “rollercoaster months” happen (and why they're more common than you think) • The hidden disconnect between treatment planning and production • Why having a full schedule doesn't always mean you're profitable • The real goal of a successful practice (hint: it's not just big months) • How to create consistency in your production, income, and stress levels Ready for the Next Level? If you're ready to create a more profitable practice while working less, come join me inside Systems for a Million Dollar Dental Practice.

HUNGRY director James Nunn knew he wanted to be a director from the time he first watch a realistic dinosaur stomp onto the big screen in JURASSIC PARK. And even before that, he was inspired by another Steven Spielberg classic, 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (the one where Indy teams up with his father, played by Sean Connery). A young James (named for James Bond, btw) borrowed his own dad's robe tie to swing from the bannisters at home. Decades later, a dozen films under his belt (like the ONE SHOT series, WILD CAT, SHARK BAIT, and now HUNGRY), he hasn't lost his love of storytelling, spectacle, and adventure. In this conversation we discuss two papers, A neuronal architecture underlying autonomic dysreflexia published in the journal Nature, and An implantable system to restore hemodynamic stability after spinal cord injury published in the journal Nature Medicine. In these papers Dr. Phillips and his team first identify specific neuronal components, and their location, responsible for blood pressure increases due to autonomic dysreflexia. Then an implantable device is demonstrated to help control, via neuromodulation, blood pressure fluctuations in both pre-clinical models and people living with SCI. We invite you to listen in as Dr. Phillips outlines this tour de force in neurologically understanding, and intervening on, hemodynamic instability after SCI.

In this episode of Missing Frames, John Mills returns to tackle one of Akira Kurosawa's most acclaimed films: HIGH AND LOW. Along the way, Shawn and John discuss the film's remarkable cinematography, its influence on filmmakers from David Fincher to Michael Mann, and why Kurosawa's storytelling still feels strikingly modern more than sixty years later. They also reflect on Kurosawa's legacy in global cinema, how his work shaped everything from the American Western to Star Wars, and why High and Low deserves to be considered one of the greatest crime films ever made. HOSTSShawn EastridgeJohn Mills

fWotD Episode 3222: High and Low (1963 film) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 1 March 2026, is High and Low (1963 film).High and Low (Japanese: 天国と地獄, Hepburn: Tengoku to Jigoku; lit. 'Heaven and Hell') is a 1963 Japanese police procedural film directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was written by Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, Eijirō Hisaita, and Ryūzō Kikushima as a loose adaptation of the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Evan Hunter. Starring Toshirō Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Kyōko Kagawa and Tatsuya Mihashi, it tells the story of Japanese businessman Kingo Gondō (Mifune) struggling for control of the major shoe company at which he is a board member. He plans a leveraged buyout of the company with his life savings, when a kidnapper mistakenly abducts his chauffeur's son to ransom him for ¥30 million. The film is viewed as influential on police procedural cinema, and has been remade multiple times internationally. The film was produced by Toho, who bought the rights to Hunter's novel in 1961 for $5,000. Working on a production budget of ¥230 million, filming on High and Low began on 2 September 1962, taking place on location at Yokohama and on set at Toho Studios. Only one attempt could be made to film the ransom exchange. The shoot required multiple cameramen, leading to all other film productions being shut down for the day. Filming ended on 30 January 1963. Kurosawa worked with Masaru Satō to score the film in their eighth collaboration together; the film's soundtrack contains a variety of influences, including mambo, classical, and modern popular music. Post-production took just under a month and, after test screenings in mid-February 1963, the film received a wide distribution.High and Low was released in Japan on 1 March 1963 and became the highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office for that year. The film received generally positive reviews both domestically and abroad. In September 1963, the film was entered into the Official Selection for the Venice Film Festival. The limited American release of the film in late November coincided with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, an event that led to a depression in initial box office takings. High and Low was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globe Awards for 1964. Critical opinion of the film has remained high, with analyses of the film focusing on Kurosawa's humanism in tackling the issue of a growing class divide, the growth of an international consumer culture, and the film's use of structure to interrogate morality and social division. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:04 UTC on Sunday, 1 March 2026.For the full current version of the article, see High and Low (1963 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Brian.

Tatiana Engel runs the Engel lab at Princeton University in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. She's also part of the International Brain Laboratory, a massive across-lab, across-world, collaboration which you'll hear more about. My main impetus for inviting Tatiana was to talk about two projects she's been working on. One of those is connecting the functional dynamics of cognition with the connectivity of the underlying neural networks on which those dynamics unfold. We know the brain is high-dimensional - it has lots of interacting connections, we know the activity of those networks can often be described by lower-dimensional entities called manifolds, and Tatiana and her lab work to connect those two processes with something they call latent circuits. So you'll hear about that, you'll also hear about how the timescales of neurons across the brain are different but the same, why this is cool and surprising, and we discuss many topics around those main topics. Spike Lee's HIGHEST 2 LOWEST is built on the rock-solid narrative foundation of HIGH AND LOW, but the “interpretation” of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime-thriller classic he builds atop it can be shaky at times. We're all in agreement that HIGHEST 2 LOWEST has flaws, but whether those flaws add up to ruin or simply provide texture to a singular filmmaker's singular film is up for discussion in the first part of this week's episode. Then we move into Connections to see where Lee and Kurosawa's films align and diverge when it comes to high-low metaphor and imagery, the intersection of media and public opinion, and the value of police work. And in Your Next Picture Show, Scott recommends an earlier collaboration between Lee and HIGHEST 2 LOWEST star Denzel Washington that has only grown in his estimation since its 1998 release.  Please share your thoughts about HIGH AND LOW, HIGHEST 2 LOWEST, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. A study released last October showed that movie remakes tend to lose money. Yet the film industry, for a variety of reasons, keeps churning them out. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Mary Pat Treuthart and Nathan Weinbender discuss one recent remake, Spike Lee's film “Highest 2 Lowest,” which is his version of Ed McBain's 1959 novel “King's Ransom,” as well as take a look back at another McBain adaptation, Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film “High and Low.”

The new HIGHEST 2 LOWEST includes an onscreen credit for “the master” Akira Kurosawa as inspiration for a film that has the same basic shape and mistaken-identity kidnapping premise of 1963's HIGH AND LOW, but is still unmistakably a Spike Lee joint. So in order to better evaluate Lee's modernization of a crime classic, we're returning to the master's version to see how Kurosawa himself reshaped HIGH AND LOW from its pulp-novel origins, utilizing a bifurcated structure and leading man Toshirō Mifune to challenge viewers' assumed sympathies towards a villain and a victim on opposite sides of the class divide. Then in Feedback, a letter from a listener underlines a point about storytelling that HIGH AND LOW handily illustrates: the necessity of a three-act structure has been greatly exaggerated. September's going to be a busy month, we can tell already. We took a week off at the end of the summer but we're coming in hot to start the fall here at Breakfast All Day. Supposedly "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is the final film in the franchise -- it says so right there in the title! -- but nothing ever really ends. This is once again the scariest case Ed and Lorraine Warren have ever taken, something to do with a haunted mirror. You've seen it all before, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are committed to the bit as always. In theaters. Then we review both Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest" and Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low," the 1963 film that inspired it. The new one stars Denzel Washington as a music industry titan fighting a kidnapping scheme; Toshiro Mifune played a shoe company executive in the original. They have similar bones but are extremely different in how they tell their stories. The Kurosawa film is one of his greats, and Lee's latest is his most purely entertaining movie in a while. (At least one of us thought so.) You can catch "Highest 2 Lowest" on Apple TV+, while "High and Low" is on HBO Max and The Criterion Channel. Finally, we did a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Lots to talk about with fall festival season beginning, plus new trailers including "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and the gross use of AI to complete Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Highest 2 Lowest, out today on Apple TV +, is the latest joint from Spike Lee.  The film is the latest adaptation of Ed McBain's King's Ransom and follows in the direct foorsteps of Akira Kurosawa's version, High and Low.  Shot on the streets of New York City by frequent Lee collaborator Matthew Libatique, the film also fuses several different musical cues and genres to create the story of a kidnapping gone wrong and the moral dilemma it presents for the music mogul now tasked with paying the ransom.  The film stars Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, John Douglas Thompson, Dean Winters, LaChanze, Princess Nokia, and Ice Spice.  Dan and Vicky break with Hot Date format once again to choose a film currently playing in cinemas.  They also discuss their recently seen including Netflix's Wednesday, 2025's Naked Gun, Freakier Friday, Weapons, Fantastic Four: First Steps and Went Up The Hill. Zach Cregger's WEAPONS overlaps with Atom Egoyan's THE SWEET HEREAFTER in both its broad narrative setup — a town grapples with the sudden disappearance of a group of children — and its non-traditional structure, but diverges considerably in its tone. Then again, WEAPONS diverges considerably from its own tone as it goes on, artfully shifting gears as it makes its way through a story that prioritizes entertainment value over horror allegory. We're joined once again by Vulture movie critic Alison Willmore to talk about why that approach worked so well on us, and less so on the film's detractors, before bringing THE SWEET HEREAFTER back in to discuss how each film's broken timeline serves to reveal the intricacies of a community shattered by grief and anger. Then in Your Next Picture Show, we offer two recommendations for follow-up viewing, one for each half of this pairing. Spike Lee and Denzel Washington first worked together on “Mo' Better Blues,” released in 1990. Washington starred as a trumpet player trying to make a living in jazz clubs; Lee, who directed the film, also played the musician's hapless manager. They later worked together on “Malcolm X” and other films, but it has been nearly twenty years since their last collaboration, the hugely successful “Inside Man.” So the new film “Highest 2 Lowest” is something of a reunion. “I've become a better director, working with Mr. Denzel Washington,” Lee tells David Remnick. “It's not about just what's on the script.  It has to be deeper than that.” “Highest 2 Lowest” is an adaptation of a 1963 movie by Akira Kurosawa, who has been a major influence on Lee. “The script came to me first,” Washington explains. “I hoped that Spike would be interested in it, so I called him up. He said, ‘Send it to me.' He read it. He said, ‘Let's make it,' and here we are.” Washington plays a music mogul targeted in a ransom plot; the feature is a crime drama with a message. “This film is about morals, and what someone will do and won't do,” Lee says. The audience “will ask themselves, ‘If you're in this situation, would you pay the ransom?' ”
