Kel McDonald and Alina Pete Discuss Their New Anthology Graphic Novel, The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, that is now live on Kickstarter. The fifth in a series of graphic novel anthologies that spans the globe, The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, inspired by original Native North American tales is now live on Kickstarter. Kel McDonald, Alina Pete and Kate Ashwin (who was not able to make the interview) in association with Iron Circus Comics along with the help of nearly a dozen other creators brought to life The Woman and the Woods and Other North American Stories, which after only one day on Kickstarter has nearly tripled its original goal! This was an enlightening conversation as to how the series came about and what we could expect in purchasing these books especially across the continents. The most exciting part in being a contributor is that this trio didn't try to nickel-and-dime everyone with their contributions as the most expensive package is only $70! Lucy Bellwood, adventure cartoonist and artist extraordinaire, has accomplished significant feats for someone still so young, including developing a loyal and devoted fan base. She is currently working on a book project with Kate Milford about a seafaring adventure graphic novel series with kind and cuddly capybaras. We talk about the eternal artistic hustle, about Kant's admonition "to not number voices, but instead weigh them." Lucy talks about the famous blog post from Kevin Kelley's "1,000 True Fans," and how to develop and sustain enough people who will stick with an artist through thick and thin and allow them to achieve artistic freedom. We talk about earlier pre-Patreon and Kickstarter artists, Robert Musil and Harry Partch, who were free to create as they chose through the patronage of a small but dedicated group of fans. Featured in a prior issue of the Ojai Quarterly by Kit Stolz for her "100 Demon Dialogues" book, Bellwood has just signed a contract for 750 pages of drawings over the next six years. An Ojai native, Lucy talks about connectedness and being known through several generations, an experience rarely duplicated outside your hometown, even as she's been in Portland, Oregon for the past decade. Always innovative and forward-thinking, one of Lucy's news projects is the "Right Number," an anonymous confessional phone line where callers can leave messages and know that only one person will hear them. Her experience at Reed College was formative and unusual, prompted by an influential teacher in Ojai, and which has led to her prolific and unusual career path. We conclude with Lucy's perceptive insights into the social unrest in Portland, and how it does not line up with right-wing narratives, because the protests are limited to a small, six-block downtown zone and whatever rare acts of violence happens can be laid at the feet of police overreach. We did not get around to talking about the 1908 Tunguska explosion, Sumerian cuneiform or the Antarctic expeditions of Ernest Shackleton. I am extremely open about this, but it's not like I yell "I AM KOREAN" at the top of every episode, but I am Korean. I was adopted too, and I don't know much about Korean culture, history, or anything else. Which is why I'm glad books such as Banned Book Club exist, so I can read about some history by way of comics. This time, I'm doing something a little different; I'm interviewing Ryan Estrada, one half of the writing team for Banned Book Club! Here's what the publisher, Iron Circus Comics, has to say about Banned Book Club: The gripping true story of a South Korean woman's student days under an authoritarian regime in the early 1980s, and how she defied state censorship through the rebellion of reading. If you want more interviews with Ryan, and including Kim Hyun Sook, here's two cool interviews, one from Foreword Reviews and one from Rich in Color. The song you heard in the episode is "Noonside" by Yaeji. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. And you can find my review of Banned Book Club on the Fandom Post. Listen Show notes: There are no show notes; I just interviewed Ryan about Banned Book Club. Next time is Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart and I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up, actually.

In this week's episode of Off Panel, Iron Circus Comics' C. Spike Trotman joins the show to chat about her publisher and current Kickstarter for Lackadaisy: The Animated Short Film. Trotman discusses how she and Iron Circus are handling the current crisis, being a multimedia company, why she started Iron Circus Comics, the power of Kickstarter, the story behind Lackadaisy: The Animated Short Film, the rewards for the Kickstarter, what made this project appealing, the value of stretch goals, launching during a crisis, what she looks for in projects, the impact of production value, differentiating yourself, and more.
This week I am joined by the artist and co-author of the forthcoming graphic novel Banned Book Club (due to be released May 6th from Iron Circus Comics), Ryan Estrada. Ryan and I talk about the fascinating story of Banned Book Club about his wife and co-author Kim Hyun Sook's experience in a banned book club during South Korea's Fifth Republic in the 1980s. We also talk about his experiences as a world traveler--experiences that include being thrown from a train--and the South Korean response to COVID-19 (as of the recording of this episode on March 11, 2020). An interesting talk with an interesting man. Hey all! Zachary Frederickson here, your friendly neighborhood GM. You might be wondering why there’s no episode in the feed today, and it falls to me as the GM and de facto voice of Roll Dice and Cry to pass on the news that unfortunately, the podcast is no longer in production. This year was really hard for us to get everybody together; there’s been a couple month-long gaps between recording sessions, and lots of new opportunities opening up for our castmates means that we collectively don’t have the same amount of time and energy to dedicate to the podcast that we once did. With that in mind, we’ve decided to definitively end it. Believe me, it wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the one that we decided was most healthy for everybody involved. I just want to take this chance to say that making this podcast with my friends has been some of the best times I’ve ever had, and that was only improved by being able to read your thoughts and reactions each week. You, the fans, have made this experience all the richer, and I can’t thank you enough for that. Now, while the show might have ended, it’s certainly not disappearing from the internet. The Soundcloud and Youtube archives are still staying up, and as far as I know the Pippa feed will still be here for awhile. Plus, we’re all over the internet, too! -The roles of Zara Fontaine and Marge Devlin were played by Emily Reisbeck. Emily is working on some new stuff, and It’s Your Funeral is coming out from Iron Circus Comics in 2020. You can read their webcomic at bluevalkyriecomic.tumblr.com and find them on Twitter @thebluevalkyrie. -The roles of Radiant Eyre and Loic Luck were played by Mari Costa. Mari’s ongoing webcomic Peritale can be found at peritale.com, and her past comics work can be found at maricomics.com. In this inaugural episode #100, the return of the podcast to regular production, I'm pleased as punch to have C. Spike Trotman as my guest. Spike founded Iron Circus Comics in 2007, and it's risen through her hard work and excellent curatorship to become the Chicago area's leading comics publisher. A cartoonist and writer herself with a long-running series, Spike has raised over a million dollars through Kickstarter across more than a dozen projects, and created a sustainable and repeatable funding method. (You can read her book on Kickstarting comics for advice!) For her success, she was named one of Kickstarter's Thought Leaders. If you're fan of indie comics, then you've no doubt heard of C. Spike Trotman. The cartoonist and best-selling author is the founder of Iron Circus Comics, Chicago's largest comic book publisher. As the Crow Flies is a story about Charlie — a queer 13 year old girl who finds herself stranded in a dangerous place: an all-white Christian youth backpacking camp. It has been nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize (2013), an Eisner Award (2014), and an Ignatz (2016), and won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators (2016). Creator Melanie Gillman joins graphic Policy Radio to discuss their webcomic as well as Steve Universe! Melanie Gillman is an Eisner- and Ignatz-nominated cartoonist. They are the creator of As the Crow Flies, a webcomic about queer teens and Christian youth camp, which will be published by Iron Circus Comics in late 2017. They have also written the Steven Universe comic for BOOM! Studios including the fan-favorite Stevonie storyline. They currently live in Tulsa, OK, where they are a 2017-2018 fellow in the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program. Their work can be read at: http://melaniegillman.com
Gene and guest host Glen Weldon (our play cousin from Pop Culture Happy Hour) explore how comics are used as spaces for mapping race and identity. Gene visits Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse in Philadelphia, and chats with proprietor Ariell Johnson who is reclaiming the comic book store, which once made her uneasy as a black fan. Meanwhile, C. Spike Trotman, another black woman, has made a name for herself as an online comics publisher of Iron Circus Comics in Chicago. We also talk to artist and designer Ronald Wimberly for his perspective as a black creator who has worked for Marvel and DC, the titans of corporate comics.

C. Spike Trotman got her start in comics with the web series “Templar, Arizona,” about a slightly irregular town filled with junkies, millionaires, strange subcultures, and weird religions. After realizing that no one was publishing the kind of stories she wanted to read — stories about people of color, queer people, people dealing with the everyday issues of being human — she decided to start her own publishing house, Iron Circus Comics. She has since used Kickstarter to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for a half dozen graphic novels and comic anthologies, including two collections of erotica comics written by women ("Smut Pedler"), a horror anthology ("The Sleep of Reason"), and two books about living life with less called "Poorcraft."Producer Aaron Scott spoke with Trotman about the growth of webcomics, the state of diversity in comics, and her love of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” We asked her to recommend several webcomics for anyone interested in wading into their world.
