In this first episode of the new series of A brush with…, Ben Luke talks to the painter Celia Paul about her influences—including writers as well as contemporary and historic artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Paul was born in 1959 in Trivandrum, India, and now lives in London. She makes intense yet ruminative paintings of people close to her, the spaces in which she lives and works, and landscapes of poignant significance. Her paintings are made from life but are pregnant with memory, poetry and emotion, which she imbues in her distinctive painterly language. Her art possesses a rare tranquillity in which one perceives deep feeling; Paul wrote in her memoir that her paintings are “so private and personal that there's almost a ‘Keep Out' sign in front of them”. At once a singular figure yet also connected to strands of recent and historic figurative painting in Britain, she has been admired widely throughout her career but only recently been recognised as a major figure in British art of the past 40 years. She discusses the fact that she began painting before she knew about art, but when she was introduced to Old and Modern Masters, she discovered El Greco and Paul Cezanne, who remain important to her today. She also reflects on the compassion in Rembrandt and Vincent van Gogh, the stillness and scale of Agnes Martin and the elementary power of the novels of the Brontë sisters. She also describes her response in painting to the artists of the School of London, including Lucian Freud, with whom she was once in a relationship, and Frank Auerbach.Celia Paul: Colony of Ghosts, Victoria Miro, London, until 17 April 2025. A Virtual Q and A about the new "City Modern" Master Plan.
Have you ever wanted a Picasso on your walls – or maybe a Joan Miro, a Chagall, or perhaps a Raoul Dufy? For a time in the mid-50s in America you could buy work by these artists for just a few dollars: that's a few dollars a yard, because these were fabrics and not original paintings – but they were beautifully designed, sophisticated, and elegant. As peace crept back after World War Two there was an intense hunger for new design. After five long years of uniforms, and sacrifice, people wanted something interesting to wear, and colourful fabrics to decorate their homes with. In America manufacturers were quick to turn their machines from military production to domestic demand. This episode of Haptic & Hue is about how fresh and fashionable textiles were amongst the first items people were able to enjoy in the post-war period. It focuses on a short period when manufacturers turned to established artists, like Picasso, Raoul Dufy, Marc Chagall and Miro, to help them create brilliant new textiles. It looks in particular at Daniel B Fuller's attempt to build what he called “A Museum Without Walls' with his Modern Masters series of textiles in the 1950s. It is also about what grew out of that, and tells the story of a young artist, unknown at the time, who worked for these same textile producers as a pattern designer, using his experience and skills to change the face of twentieth century art. Barry N. Malazberg and his multiple Science Fiction personalities were on the frontlines as eras shifted from Asimovian ideas to a counter-culture middle finger held high novels filled with sex, drugs, and political points of view. One of his weirdest meta- SF novels was the thin 1974 masterpiece Galaxies. The novel is the story of a 40th-century starship captain and the science fiction writer creating her and the novel at the same time. Galaxies was reprinted a few years ago by Professor D. Harlan Wilson's Anti-Oedipus Press. So who better to join me for this discussion... In this episode, we talk about why Barry Malzberg is a genius, underrated, and vastly more important to 20th-century Science Fiction than given credit for. Why he alone was in a position to make this commentary, we go on tangents about Philip K. Dick, John Brunner and some on this panel argue that Ursula K. Leguin is overrated. D. Harlan Wilson is a researcher, publisher, and author. His fiction includes a dozen novels and plays including Dr. Idenity and Jackanape and the Fingerman. His non-fiction includes the Modern Masters of Science Fiction series book on J.G. Ballard and a critical companion to the Stars, My Destination. James Reich is the author of Soft Invasions and The Song My Enemies Sing. These are two of my favorite writers and I loved every stinking minute spent talking with them, I hope you will too. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

As more and more people flock to Pioneer, prices are heating up and inventory is going down. So where does that leave people wanting to get into the format? When the popularity of Modern hit a fever pitch a few years back, prices in the format got a little out of control as stock dried up. Wizards knew they had to do something to address the lack of inventory and get cards into the hands of players, so they released Modern Masters. Not only were the packs incredibly popular, but so was the limited format. Since then, we've also got legacy themed masters set, as well as different iterations of Modern Masters. Seeing as this is the tried and true way to infuse cards into eternal formats, it's only a mater of time before we get a similar masters set for Pioneer. The real question is when, how much, and which cards will show up in it. In this week's show, The First Pioneers explore what a Pioneer Masters set would look like, what kind of limited strategies it could have, and go over which cards are either desperately needed or would be great for Pioneer players to have. If we missed a card you think should be in this theoretical masters set, or if you have some ideas for the limited format, be sure to join our discord! Joey Chiarello is a self-taught artist. When he was a little boy growing up in Colorado, his older sister tricked him into thinking he was part Japanese. He believed it long enough that a teacher finally had to call in his parents to break the news that their son was no longer identifying as white. The artist's inner demons emerged in sculptural self-portraits styled after samurai and from Asian mythology. Chiarello makes hollow, hand-built ceramic figurative sculptures from clay slabs. All work is fired to cone 6-7 or 2194 - 2219 degrees Fahrenheit in an electric kiln. He uses stoneware, porcelain and paper clay. The accenting use of steel for claws or bone for horns, adds completion, durability and even an element of danger. He studied with Esther Shimazu of Honolulu, Hawaii and Sergei Isupov, and Michael Sherrill and under their tutelage he earned a scholarship through the Hawaii Craftsmen in 2004 and 2005. Chiarello views his art career as a method of introspection and teaching as a part of his education. He has taught ceramic art classes at the Hawaii potters guild in Honolulu Hawaii and Seward park clay studio in Seattle Washington (2009-2011) and other places. Joey has been exhibiting work since 2003. His more recent shows include Mini SOFA inspired show at The Fine Art associates, Hawaii's Modern Masters, Honolulu Japanese Chamber of commerce, Commitment to excellence Juried show, 2nd prize 3-D category, Honolulu Hawaii (2011), and “Homeward-bound” solo show at The Pacini Lubel Gallery Seattle (2010), just to name a few. Joey uses a wide range of age-old 2-D designs that includes a wide range of Native, Asian, folklore and spirituality as paintings, drawings and tattoos which inspire his 3-D ceramic interpretations. His art is also exhibited currently at the Downtown Art Center (1041 Nuuanu Ave, Second Floor).Chiarello says, “Growing up, I have always had a great appreciation of the many forms and capabilities of the entire animal kingdom. I am captivated by the stillness of the instinctual nature of each diverse creature. When I give in, creatures seem to flow from my fingertips.” https://www.etsy.com/shop/Demonsinmyteahttps://www.instagram.com/demonsinmytea/Subscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:

Today my guest is someone who I've known since childhood. He is not only a wonderful guru, but also a family friend. This person is Yogi Amrit Desai. Yogi Amrit Desai is one of the earliest yoga gurus who brought yoga to the West in 1960. He has been repeatedly honored by world renowned authorities and organizations for bringing the inner dimension of Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga to the west. His teachings have ignited the fire that began the initial renaissance of the inner dimension of yoga in the 20th century. Over the last 60 years, Shri Amritji has founded some of the largest yoga centers and health centers in North America. Amritji currently resides at the Amrit Yoga Institute, an internationally recognized training and wellness center in Salt Springs, Florida. Today, Amritji continues to share the ancient depths, hidden meanings and modern applications of the authentic yogic roots from which he began. Thousands of I AM Yoga, IAM Yoga Nidra and I AM Yoga Therapy teachers have been trained in the modalities he developed worldwide. Some of his many awards include the Doctor of Yoga Science award- Vishwa Yoga Ratna presented by the president of India and International Yoga Grand Master and nominated for Padma Vibhushan nomination by the ex- prime minister of India- Chandra Shekhar. This is what we discuss in depth: How Yogi Amrit Desai found his path & his “why.” How the yoga teachings of “I AM Yoga” can be used to lead and live a simpler, healthier and happier life. The importance of diet and how important that is to leading a healthy life both inside and out? How can one become better at listening to the mind/body about what foods are healthy and good for them. “If it doesn't change your life- it's not Yoga, its exercise” - Yogi Amrit Desai Make sure to checkout Gurudev Shri Amritji's website and his 10 meditation series and 3 day program: 10 Day Meditation Course: https://ecourses.amrityoga.org/catalog/info/id:157 Xmas Course: https://ecourses.amrityoga.org/catalog/info/id:177 www.amrityoga.org www.amritji.org
Shelter and Solidarity: A Deep Dive with Artists and Activists
As the Covid-19 pandemic rages on, this episode explores the significance of apocalyptic and dystopian narratives for our current crisis-laden moment. While typically associated with large-scale death and destruction, the word ‘apocalypse' also means a revelation or uncovering of what was hidden in plain sight. Joined by noted science and speculative fiction and film scholars Gerry Canavan and Mark Soderstrom, and co-host Linda Liu, we will discuss what this pandemic is revealing about the systems we inhabit, as well as some lessons and limits of cultural texts that imagine apocalyptic scenarios and dystopian societies. Gerry Canavan is an associate professor in the English Department at Marquette University, specializing in twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature. His first book, Octavia E. Butler, appeared in 2016 in the Modern Masters of Science Fiction series at University of Illinois Press. He tweets at @gerrycanavan and has recently embarked on an ill-considered Kurt Vonnegut reread podcast @gradschoolvonn. Mark Soderstrom has been a professional blacksmith, carpenter, labor organizer, and musician. He is now an Associate Professor in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and Work and Labor Policy programs of SUNY-Empire State College. He has published work on labor history, history of science, oral history, neoliberalism, and speculative fiction.
This conversation focuses on the value of reencountering works of art—and especially writing—during a pandemic. We touch on how the meditative focus of re-reading can help combat doomscrolling and the attention deficit of a 24-hour bad-news cycle. We also discuss how returning to beloved written works can offer solace and strength during difficult times. Participants include: Gerry Canavan - is an associate professor in the English Department here at Marquette, specializing in twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature. His first book, Octavia E. Butler, appeared in 2016 in the Modern Masters of Science Fiction series at the University of Illinois Press. Angela Sorby - is a professor in the English Department at Marquette. She has published 4 single-author books and 2 edited collections. She has won multiple awards for her poetry, including a Midwest Book Award and the Brittingham Prize. Amy Cooper Cary - is Head of Special Collections and University Archives in the Raynor Memorial Libraries at Marquette University. In addition to her MLIS, she holds a Masters in Comparative Literature and Translation, and is an eclectic reader with interests in British history and dystopian fiction.
