On Friday's show: A civil court judge in Harris County has granted a temporary restraining order filed by the Houston Federation of Teachers, which, for the moment, puts on hold HISD's new teacher evaluation system. Jackie Anderson, president of the union, explains what her organization alleges and wants. Also this hour: A few hundred particle physicists are descending on Houston next week for Quark Matter, an international gathering of researchers who study the matter that formed the universe. We learn about some of the recent breakthroughs in that field and discuss how pop culture has made this kind of science more mainstream. Then, we break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And, on the heels of her eighth win at the U.S. Gymnastics championships, Simone Biles talks about returning to competition and how she approaches her sport -- and the spotlight -- after stepping away following the Tokyo Olympics.

The Texas Education Agency informed the Houston Independent School District on Wednesday of its plans to install state-appointed managers in place of HISD's elected school board. In effect, the state of Texas will take control of Houston schools. This move has been nearly four years in the making. The TEA first sought to take control of the district in 2019 under authority established by state law, which says if any one school in a district fails to meet accountability standards for five consecutive years, the state has the authority -- and the mandate -- to take control of the entire district. This was something HISD had been challenging in court. But the district announced last week it was ending that court challenge when it became clear TEA Commissioner Mike Morath was preparing to make this move. In this bonus material from Houston Matters, host Craig Cohen discusses how the takeover will happen, when it will occur, and what other steps TEA is prepared to make with News 88.7 education and families reporter Dominic Anthony Walsh. We also hear portions of Dominic's interview with Commissioner Morath and Craig talks with Houston Federation of Teachers President Jackie Anderson.   On Friday's show: As the much-rumored potential state takeover of HISD looms over the educational landscape of Greater Houston, Jackie Anderson, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, talks about the wait for a decision and what a takeover could mean for the district's teachers. Also this hour: We discuss what the Supreme Court heard recently about the Biden administration's partial student debt cancellation plan and what it might mean for Houstonians paying off student loans. Then: Could the Tennessee Titans really wear throwback Houston Oilers jerseys next season when they play the Texans? It's possible – but is it good, bad, or ugly? This week's “non-expert” panel weighs in. And sound artist Maria Chavez, a former Houstonian and UH alum, returns to live performance after brain surgery. She performs tonight at The Orange Show.

Jackie Chavez Anderson is a Yoga teacher and certified Ayurveda Health Educator and founder of A New HoriZen, educating, encouraging, and empowering others to ignite their health evolution. Jackie’s goal is to share her passion, enthusiasm, and love for Yoga and Ayurveda. Struggling with unhealthy negative body image perceptions of herself throughout her childhood and as an adult, coupled along with poor diet and lifestyle routines through her years lead to a decline in her physical and emotional health. As the diagnosis began to pile up with high blood pressure, obesity, and above-average ranges in glucose and cholesterol levels, she turned to Yoga and Ayurveda and embraced the ancient philosophies that allow her the ability to tune into her body and tune out negative thoughts and outside harmful influences. As her journey continues to guide her on the path of health and wellness, she desires to share with others her knowledge of how the tools of holistic healthcare allow for an opportunity to meet yourself where you are at and to live YOUR best life. We learned from Jackie: Meet yourself where you are at.Self-care does not mean you are being selfishUse the tools you have like to sit and relax, unwind, and eat slowly. With just under a week to go before Hallowe’en, this episode of Gibraltar Stories looks at some of Gibraltar’s ghost stories. ***This episode comes with a health warning: Listeners of a sensitive nature and young children may not enjoy all of the subject matter in this episode - it does get a bit gruesome in places. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea!*** Gibraltar, just like any other city has a whole host of ghost stories and spooky legends, the most famous of which is probably the Grey Lady of the Convent (the ghost of a young nun who was allegedly bricked up into the walls of the Convent to prevent her from eloping with her lover). There are tales of long departed soldiers still making their patrols through the many miles of tunnels within the Rock itself and Moorish Castle which has seen centuries come and go sitting above Casemates Square. Gibraltarian writer Jackie Anderson is in the process of collecting an anthology of Gibraltar ghost stories and is on the look out for any which may have passed her by. Do you have any to share with her?
