Ceri speaks with Nick Ryan, an Emmy and BAFTA award-winning sound artist who has revolutionised how we experience sound. From his early days experimenting in his garden shed to creating interactive radio dramas and transforming public spaces with sound installations, Nick's journey is all about creative evolution. Nick talks to Ceri about confidence, collaboration, and the importance of asking for help. The conversation reveals how his personal experiences, including early loss and bullying, shaped his innovative approach to sound art and his understanding of human connection through audio experiences. KEY TAKEAWAYS · Early experiences with materiality and experimentation, encouraged by his grandmother and science teacher, laid the foundation for Nick's creative approach to sound design · The transition from visual art to sound happened organically through fashion show soundtracks, leading to Nick's pioneering work in interactive audio · Public realm sound art can transform spaces and experiences in ways that traditional urban planning doesn't consider · Confidence issues are universal among creatives - even those who appear most confident often struggle the most · The importance of asking for help and being vulnerable can lead to unexpected opportunities and support for all creatives. · Nick's technical innovation in sound has created new ways of storytelling and audience engagement · Sound art is unique in that it's always a collaboration between the artist and the listener's internal experience · The value of working with supportive people and learning to recognise when a collaboration isn't the right fit! BEST MOMENTS "Everyone's got confidence issues and the people that don't seem to have confidence issues, with a few exceptions, are generally the people that have the most issue with confidence." "No one ever says no if you ask for advice." "If you're trying to make something for other people that's a recipe for disaster. It's just about being true to yourself." "The atmosphere outside the listener is only one half and the other half is the atmosphere inside the listener." "Don't work with people you don't like. Something else will come along.” "As a sound artist, you can never author more than 50 percent of the experience." Jim Metzner is one of the pioneers of science radio—he's been making field recordings and sharing them with audiences for more than 40 years. He hosted shows such as “Sounds of Science” in the 1980s, which later grew into “Pulse of the Planet,” a radio show about “the sound of life on Earth.”Over the decades, Metzner has created an incredible time capsule of soundscapes, and now, his entire collection is going to the Library of Congress. John Dankosky talks with Metzner about what he's learned about the natural world from endless hours of recordings and what we can all learn from listening. Plus, they'll discuss some of his favorite recordings. To hear the best audio quality, it might be a good idea to use headphones if you can.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D. For sound artist and ethnographer Brian Harnetty, listening is perhaps even more important than composing. He is passionate about capturing the essence of a place through his creations, and his work therefore involves venturing into towns and landscapes armed with his microphone and recording everything from ambient sounds to oral histories. It also involves in-depth research in archives and libraries to discover a community's often forgotten history, images and archival recordings. The geographic area to which he is most devoted is Appalachian Ohio. His parents and their forebears hail from those mountains, and though he currently lives a 90-minute drive away in Columbus, OH, over the years he has spent enough time in the area not only to gain a deep understanding of its landscape and people but also to earn the community's trust, an essential component of his work. He wishes his compositions — sound collages might be a better description — to have a social impact. Not only do those who listen to his creations gain a rich appreciation for a region that for decades has been marked and scarred by extractive industries, but the community members who contribute their memories hear the richness of their culture and history echoed back to them.Brian, who is currently a Faculty Fellow at Ohio State University's Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme, has released nine albums. The influential music magazine MOJO gave two of his most recent albums, “Shawnee, Ohio” and “Words and Silences,” five stars out of five, and “Wire” magazine placed “Words and Silences” at position number five on its top 10 list of 2022's modern-composition albums. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Brian explains how he arrived at his sonic ethnography practice and what strategies he uses to make his work with the utmost integrity. https://www.brianharnetty.com/

Since the devastating 2019 fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the ringing of the cathedral's bells has ceased. Sound artist, Bill Fontana, known for his sound sculptures of Golden Gate Bridge, temple bells in Kyoto, and trees in Sequoia National Forest, creates a new work giving voice to the silenced bells of Notre Dame. To create his new work, Silent Echoes, Fontana attached seismic accelerometers—sensors designed to detect vibrations—to each of its ten bells of Notre Dame. As the bells reverberate in response to the ambient sounds of Paris—rain, the calls of birds, the noise of the street—the live feed is transmitted to a series of speakers at the Centre Pompidou creating a haunting, immersive sound sculpture. Silent Echoes debuted at the Centre Pompidou in June, where, on the fifth floor terrace of the museum, visitors stood awash in the acoustics of the bells, with the towers of Notre Dame in view just across the Seine. Alisa Carroll of the podcast Alcôve interviewed Bill Fontana in San Francisco and Davia Nelson spoke with him in Paris before the opening of the exhibition. This story was produced by Jim McKee. A quarter century of podcasts! And no better way to celebrate than with our queen of European electronica Liana Forte. Liana is a word, sound and expression artist living in Finland but originally from Kazakhstan. Since unlocking her creativity earlier this year, and inspired by her muse Kate Bush, she has crafted nine unique slabs of poetry set to an electronic backing. We hear how she had no choice but to study music once her dancing was cruelly cut short; how her father's vinyl collection, although technically off limits to her, fired her love of Western music; how Asian folk music influences her and we discuss Berlin and Kraftwerk. "They (piano competitions) instilled this totally normal world of being judged for what you're doing. It fostered this idea of, I hate the way this feels, and it didn't feel good in my body." "I started to notice these thoughts in a different way. They can be really subtle... you might identify with them... you might think they are YOU." "The best way that I found to change it, was to STOP & GET QUIET." "We have been trained to live a "what's wrong" society, we need to retrain that muscle to go to.. Our guest has been described as “one of the most important artists working across arts and health right now. His ground-breaking work has huge potential for impact across life sciences and is a testament to the power of creativity in health and well-being”. Anyone who has been inside a prison will have experienced the eerie silence when everyone is locked up and the cacophony of sound at other times. We may learn to neutralise those sounds but Justin shows how sound has beauty and meaning Justin's practice includes a range of media from sound, phonics, film, drawing, installation, interventions and performance and he's collaborated with a wide range of individuals across medical, research and creative industries sectors. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and he has described hisown aim as being to educate, share and engage people with sound and reconnect with their lives using sound art. In addition to his artistic practice, Justin has extended his artistic practice to work with young people and community groups particularly those associated with increased vulnerability such as within palliative care and mental health. Finally, Justin runs Glass Twin a company that use sound as a tool to promote mental well-being through developing soundscapes and he's worked within hospices, prison and schools as well as with the emergency services and charities supporting people with mental health needs. It's within this capacity where Naomi came across Justin who worked with her to try and find some ways to enrich the environment of the Fens Unit, Whitemoor Prison, and create meaningful use of sound. http://www.justinwiggan.co.uk/

Last year, when rabble.ca staff had one of our rare in-person staff retreats, we were talking about the climate crisis and how difficult it was to get around the fear that we all felt. So we decided to make it an editorial focus. That was back in August. At the time we came up with the idea, we had no way of knowing that our fear would be even greater because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, when we talked about the subject again at the beginning of March as the pandemic was in the process of unfolding, our idea seemed especially relevant. Today rabble radio starts its contributions to our Climate Hope series on climate grief and hope in the time of pandemic, with a conversation between rabble radio producer and host Victoria Fenner and media artist Claude Schryer. Schryer is a sound artist, arts administrator and cultural worker born in Ottawa and raised in the francophone community in North Bay, Ontario. From an early age he developed a passion for art, environment and social action. In the 1990s, his work focused on acoustic ecology and soundscape composition, notably as a founder and first administrator of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology. That focus has continued throughout the past few decades. Earlier this year, he attended a conference on Creative Climate Change Leadership with artists from around the world in Arizona called Crisis: Principles for Just and Creative Responses. He has just started a new blog dedicated to arts and climate action where he writes: "In May 2019, my climate denial bubble burst. It was a terrifying and disorienting experience that made me question everything about my life. In retrospect, I realize this was a zen-like gift of 'terrified awakening,' of 'clear seeing,' but at the time, I was paralyzed with emotion and dread. What triggered my climate denial bubble to burst? I feel compelled to share this personal experience, in the hope that it might help others who are also struggling with the current sustainability crisis and searching for a path forward…" Image: Sabrina Matthews.
