It could be excruciating and traumatic such as an alcoholic parent, chronic pain or illness, or the death of a loved one. What we might not realize is that one of our biggest obstacles is our mindset. Our autopilot tends to be that we interpret negative circumstances with a negative meaning. What if there was a better way? And what if the answer is right between our ears? In this episode, Pastor Danny shares three steps to overcoming any obstacle. 1. We all have goals and desires for the most important areas of our lives. We want the best for our health, careers, marriages, and relationships. Most of us set out to make positive changes with the best intentions. We hit the ground running, but over time the desires fade, we lose our motivation, and we don't see the results we hoped. What happened? We lacked consistency. Consistency is key to creating the results that we want to see. Yet, we struggle with it. We live in an instant-gratification culture. We want results quickly. We also get distracted, prefer comfort over discomfort, and know that there isn't a high cost to miss a day here and there. So, how do we get started and stick with it? But if you want 2021 to be the year you push past your setbacks and have the breakthroughs you desire, don't start by setting goals and making resolutions. Start by asking yourself questions. Asking questions may be more effective than any other technique when making the changes necessary to achieve goals. Questions are powerful, and failing to ask ourselves the right ones keeps us from moving forward. We stay locked into the same bad habits that hold us back over and over again. The right questions cause us to think differently and approach our problems from a new angle. As you examine your hopes and dreams for the new year, ask yourself these four questions: 1. Are you nervous? It's easy to look at the state of the world right now and feel anxious, overwhelmed, and even afraid. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, upcoming U.S. election, economic uncertainty, racial tension and unrest, and chaotic fall school semester, many of us are feeling on edge. In this episode, Pastor Danny gives us four reasons why we do not need to be afraid, even in the midst of these unsettling events and issues. 1. Believe that something good will come from this. 2. Believe that God is behind this. 3. Believe that God controls the elements. 4. Believe that death is nothing for those who follow Jesus. Bible verses mentioned: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 “That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.' Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'” Mark 4:35-41 “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'” John 11:25-26 “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21 “I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 Additional Resources: Breaking Through Fear (http://www.dannyanderson.net/breaking-through-fear/) by Danny Anderson Learn more about coming to Christ at www.eclife.org/cometochrist (http://www.eclife.org/cometochrist) For more information about Emmanuel Church, including our weekend service times and locations, visit www.eclife.org.
