Do you often feel angry, sad, frustrated, annoyed, drained, confused, or just…some kind of way when you interact with a certain friend or friends? Maybe you need to check your boundaries. Boundaries are the physical, mental, emotional, and other limits that protect our personal space and define how we interact with others. They help us feel safe as individuals in all areas of our lives. They help us protect the people and things that are important to us, including our finances, our time with family, our self care - the list goes on and on.    How do you know you need a boundary? I'll give you a hint. Pay attention to that icky or uncomfortable feeling you have after you interact with someone. Take note of the confusion you feel when you're together, then do something about it.    Join Ashley Cook, Associate Marriage Family Therapist (AMFT133670), and me for a talk about boundaries - what they are, why we need them, and how we establish them. Why? Because healthy boundaries are a huge part of maintaining healthy friendships and protecting personal peace.   Additional Resource: Boundaries Updated and Expanded Edition: When to Stay Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life - by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend   Other Episodes Referenced in This Episode: 1. Boundaries are invisible lines that define what behaviors are acceptable between people. They can be physical, emotional, or based on time or space. Boundaries are important because they can help prevent feelings of resentment or being taken advantage of. They can also help people feel comfortable opening themselves up to close relationships and intimacy.

How Do I Deal With the Anger I Feel?

Today's episode of GrievingVoices takes a deep dive into the complex emotion of anger, especially for us Human Design Manifestor-types navigating loss and trauma. I open up about my battle with anger following life's curveballs and how it can be misunderstood or mishandled. As someone who has walked through the fire of personal loss and trauma, I've learned firsthand how anger can be both destructive and transformative. It's not just an outburst; it's a signal calling us to introspection. Why does this affect me so deeply? What boundaries have been crossed? Many turn to short-term fixes or STERBs (short-term energy-relieving behaviors) like anger to cope with grief. But these are merely band-aids on deeper emotional wounds. The key lies in processing anger constructively. This isn't about suppressing emotions but rather understanding them—identifying what needs protection or restoration within ourselves before we react impulsively.Key Takeaways:-Anger should prompt introspection rather than projection onto others.-Short-term coping mechanisms like STERBs provide temporary relief but do not address underlying emotional pain.- Constructive processing of anger involves self-protection and restoration efforts.- Emotional intelligence grows through understanding our reactions and setting healthy boundaries.Establishing clear boundaries emerged as another critical theme. The absence of boundary-setting skills during childhood can lead to adult challenges such as unchecked anger. To navigate this complex terrain, the book "Boundaries" is recommended for those seeking guidance on creating and implementing boundaries.Engagement with our emotions in real-time fosters balance and wellness. Tools like visualization and mindful breathing are practical strategies for dissipating anger without confrontation. We pave the way toward transformative life changes by embracing self-awareness and actively managing our emotions.Join me in embracing self-awareness and mastering emotional management as pathways toward transforming our lives after loss.RESOURCES:Human DesignBook | Boundaries Updated and Expanded Edition: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your LifeYouMapGrief RecoveryEpisode Sponsor: Magic Mind | Use the code "GRIEVINGVOICES" to receive one month free with a 3-month subscription. In December, we spend every Monday morning in a series where we process and pray through the year. Each week, the focus will be different, but the theme of processing and praying will remain the same. We started this series by looking at the goodness of God by reflecting on our victories. In this episode, we are pausing to process our personal boundaries this year. Pray: “Jesus, what boundaries do you want to encourage me to set in my life?” Process: What boundaries did I establish that went well this year? What unspoken boundaries did I find myself frustrated with when people broke them? Sometimes, a boundary is not a boundary unless it is spoken.  What areas of my life might need new boundaries this coming year? Boundaries can change with seasons. If you've developed a pattern of people-pleasing, it can feel impossible to break free of it, especially in our core relationships. It often begins when someone in our childhood in authority communicates that their needs trump our needs. We become driven by the need to avoid conflict or deflect from the shame we feel about ourselves. But when we don't look for other ways of relating, we can stunt our growth and deprive other people of the chance to grow.  I'll share how God exposed the people-pleasing habits in my life and why learning practical ways to set boundaries transformed how I felt about myself and related to others. I'll unpack the roles of the “drama triangle” and how you can identify which roles you play in this dynamic as well as what you can do to get unstuck here.    In this episode you'll learn: Why it's so tricky to distinguish between a need and a desire Why it's unhealthy to believe it's our job to stop anyone from experiencing negative emotions How people pleasing can feel so rewarding at times Evidence for why tolerating abuse is not an expression of love Why we can feel stuck believing we have no choices   Grab your copy of Lifted From Shame Order your eBook or print book on Amazon here. Welcome to Episode 142 of the Being Human Podcast: How to Start Healing an Unhealthy Relationship (A Relationship Series, Part Five) This week, Dr. Greg follows up on last week's episode about the warning signs of emotional abuse to answer the question “What can I do if my relationship is unhealthy?” In this episode, he breaks open three practical steps you can take to help you navigate through the challenges of a difficult relationship.   Highlights from the episode:  The subtlety and invisibility of emotional and psychological abuse;  How the parts of us that believe “if only the other person would change, my life would be better” can overshadow other more helpful parts;  Free will and self-determination as integral parts of our humanity that cannot be taken away;  The importance of identifying where we still have freedom to make a choice; The fruitlessness of attempting to change another person's behavior;  Understanding boundaries as necessary when making decisions in and about a relationship;  How there can be parts of us that put up roadblocks to our growth and development due to fear; The way we react, respond, and participate in relational dynamics as a result of our personality formed in childhood;  Growth in self-awareness as essential in the process of healing;  How courage and greater strength come from support and community.    Resources mentioned or relevant: Last week's episode: Seven Signs of Emotional Abuse (A Relationship Series, Part Four);  Need help? Do you hate Christmas, and you don't know quite the reason? Or do you obsess about the Christmas season going overboard, over budget and over-stressed? Or maybe you go with the flow to avoid the Christmas conflict? Today we're continuing our Christmas movie series, and we're talking about what the Grinch Who Stole Christmas can teach us about out relationships. So, I'm talking to you today if: If you're ready to discover the true joy of Christmas…and life. If you're ready to let go of the stress and strains of the Christmas seasons…and life. If you want to enjoy life for yourself. Today is all about relationships. So we're going to be pulling out the Grinch. Surprisingly Dr. Suess based the Grinch character on himself. It was the day after Christmas, and saw his grinch face in the mirror. You know, sour, cranky and unhappy. He'd lost the spirit of Christmas and decided to get it back, which inspired The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I want to show you how four characters took a journey to discover the true meaning of Christmas and life. Christmas and life are all about relationships–our relationship with God, family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Rich relationships make for a rich life. 1. Grinch Grinch hated Christmas because he'd been hurt as a young child. He lost connection with others and then hid himself to keep himself safe. How about you? Have you put up a wall to keep yourself safe? To have connections, you must first work through the hurt. Then you need to show yourself friendly. Be the first to reach out. 2. Who's The Who's liked Christmas a lot…busy with competitions, shopping, eating and the trappings of commercialism. But they lost the meaning of Christmas–relationships. True relationships get vulnerable and deep. When you're the first to be open and vulnerable, you create a safe space for others to do the same. Now you can go deep into relationships and really enjoy what matters. 3. Max the dog He's Grinch's loyal companion, ready and willing to help. But Max is a doormat. Are you, like me, afraid of conflict? Do you just go with the flow to keep the peace? That's no way to live…under someone's feet. We need to set boundaries to tell people how they are allowed to treat us. I know it's hard, so if you need help with that, * check out Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend. https://amzn.to/3P4vEKK 4. Cindy Lou Who Cindy lost her love of Christmas and didn't know why. She was searching for her first love. When Cindy started searching, she discovered the potential in others, including the Grinch. She helped him see what he could be instead of what he currently was. And through all that, she literally saved Christmas and help each person develop deeper relationships with one another. So who are you, and what do you need to do to grow deeper in your relationship and discover the true meaning of Christmas and life? Rich relationships make for a rich life. Sandra Stosz is the author of “Breaking Ice and Breaking Glass: Leading in Uncharted Waters.” Sandra is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral who served for over 40 years, including 12 years at sea. She often led all-male teams and was the first woman to lead a U.S. Armed Forces Service Academy. In this episode, Sandra shares with humility some of the leadership lessons she learned in the Coast Guard. She shares humorous stories, and reveals things she learned early that shaped her remarkable career, and why she baked cakes for her staff!   https://bit.ly/TLP-313   Key Takeaways [1:36] Jim introduces Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz, Retired, tells of her background, and welcomes her to The Leadership Podcast. [2:08] Sandra's nephew Hunter Stosz is a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard, serving as the Combat Systems Officer on the Coast Guard National Security Cutter JAMES out of Charleston, S.C. Hunter was a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy when Sandra was the Superintendent. That was his leadership crucible! [3:01] Sandra's hobby is baking cakes! She would bring them into the office and give people a break to stop what they were doing and gather in the conference room to talk and laugh. [4:35] Sandra talks about the Coast Guard Academy, where she was Superintendent from 2011 to '15, and the Loy Institute for Leadership. She retired from the Coast Guard in 2018 but she is a trustee of the Loy Institute for Leadership, which is the Academy's agent for leadership development. [6:16] The Coast Guard Academy, like all the service academies, is a 200-week program, meaning four full years of school. A lot of the Academy's leadership development happens during the summer. Training is given through a framework called LEAD: Learn from theory, Experience through practice, Analyze using reflection, and Deepen understanding from mentoring. [7:09] It's a virtuous cycle of leader development. It starts with cadets learning in a classroom from Posner and Kouzes's Leadership Challenge for leadership theory. Then they put the cadets on the water for experiential leadership development through seamanship in sailing programs, and small boat practice, all on the water. The more senior cadets use a practicum that tells them how to instruct. [8:19] After a day on the water, the cadets analyze through reflection. They sit down and “hotwash” what happened; what they want to repeat next time, what they want to avoid next time, and what they learned. Then the cadets deepen their understanding through mentoring. Everybody who learns continues to mentor somebody else, making it a virtuous cycle. [8:48] Sandra shares a story of leadership learning. The cadets sailing a ship tacked suddenly without warning the cook in the galley, the only female cadet on board. Hotdogs flew all over the deck and what seemed funny to the cadets on deck upset the cook who felt laughed at and disrespected. Leadership also means inclusion and respect. [11:18] You can learn to lead through practical experience. The Coast Guard Academy collects data from performance reviews to measure leadership development over the four-year program. It's hard to measure leadership development over four years but they are on a mission to do that and they are getting closer every month. [12:15] The Coast Guard Academy LEAD framework is built upon the Coast Guard framework of leading self, leading others, and leading the organization. Cadets learn to lead themselves and lead others. They do not advance to leading the organization at the Academy. Sandra tells a story of a cadet who carelessly filled the fuel tank with water. He will never do that again, having learned by experience. [15:12] Officers in the Coast Guard learn to lead the organization, which is strategic. Sandra has seen senior leaders fall short and fail when they did not mature from tactical thinking to strategic thinking. Strategy is looking over the horizon to anticipate threats that might come over that horizon, and then adjust, adapt, and be agile. [16:15] At the organizational level, you face crises where the easy decisions and actions have been made at the lower levels; if it ends up in your hands, it is a big decision. You've got to be strategic and decisive. A lot of people aren't strategic or are not decisive. They haven't learned how to move from leading others to making decisions that affect the organization and how the organization relates to others. [17:59] Jim highly recommends Sandra's book. It addresses the balance between power and control. Sandra speaks of the responsibility of the individual and the team to find ways to power through crisis and adversity. There is leadership at all levels. It's not just about the top boss. Sandra mentions Extreme Ownership. [19:50] It is popular now to blame others for everything wrong so you don't have to own up to it. Sandra was thinking about that when she wrote her book. She was grateful when someone gave her a Serenity Prayer plaque at a difficult point in her career. She was trying to control everything and having trouble letting go of things she couldn't control. She carried that prayer to every duty station. [20:50] The balance between control and power reminds Sandra of Aristotle's Golden Mean, which is the balance between extremes. The most powerful thing you can do is release your control and give your power away. Giving power away empowers others. You don't lose anything by giving power away. You gain the respect and trust of those you empower. [22:12] Control originates from humility and power originates from hubris. Sandra explains why humility is hard to maintain as you advance in rank. The more senior she became, she tried hard to build trust and earn respect and not use her position of power. [23:59] Sandra shares a story on the paradox of control about giving away power. Her Captain gave his power to her, a young lieutenant, to give an important brief to a Commandant of the Coast Guard. She had never given a speech before! For the rest of her career, she worked to give her power away to younger officers. [27:26] Jan cites an Arthur Brooks article, “Being special vs. happy: What success addiction looks like and how to recover,” that discusses motivation and happiness. What would Sandra's advice be to her 27-year-old self? She would tell her younger self that prevention comes before response and remember the importance of establishing boundaries. [31:41] The four types of exhaustion or wellness are physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Don't allow yourself to be exhausted in all four of these areas at the same time! You can manage your wellness with a structure of boundaries built on a foundation of values. If you can't manage your wellness, you can't manage your team's wellness. [36:15] One of the chapters of Sandra's book is “There's no secret ingredient.” — Kung Fu Panda. Sandra sees 10 leadership lessons in Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2.[37:26] Sandra shares a foundational story from serving on her first ship, an icebreaker sailing to Antarctica. She learned the Three Ps of Power: Personal, Professional, and Positional. Lean on the first two and go to the third only as a last resort. Your personal power is your EQ. Your professional power is your work ethic and values. Your positional power is your rank or leadership role. [39:44] Use your personal and professional power every day and you will build trust and earn respect. People will want to do their jobs because they feel like they're part of something bigger than themselves, they feel shared values, they know their purpose, they have pride and passion, and they want to end each day deeply content, satisfied, and feeling good about themselves, their work, and life. [41:12] Leadership is not all in a textbook. It's hard to learn it and hard to teach it. If you're trying to understand leadership and finding it not easy, your symptoms are normal. Jan shares a message with new listeners. Jan and Jim use the tagline, “We study leaders.” After interviewing 300 leaders, we're still learning. It will be our lifelong pursuit. [43:02] Sandra's advice for people in transition from one chapter of their life to the next: Watch out for becoming part of another “me” generation. The people who will be happiest, in the long run, will be are going to look at how they can contribute as part of a bigger purpose with values that they share. They're going to persevere. They're going to put in more than they take out. They're going to be contributors. [45:20] Sandra's last words are about life-long learning. She stayed for 40 years in the Coast Guard because it gave her opportunities to train, advance, and go to the Kellogg Business School, the National War College, and a Capstone program. She continues to read and develop herself. Life-long learning is key to your ability to succeed in a meaningful way. [47:06] Jan closes with a quote from Amelia Earhardt on the decision to act.   Quotable Quotes “Every once in a while, you need a reason to laugh when you're at work and you're in a really tough job. I think the cakes helped build that camaraderie and that's one thing I like about in-person workplaces.” “We expect the cadets to make a mistake when they're learning how to lead themselves. It's trial and error. And this is the time when we give them leeway to fail and pick themselves up, and make mistakes, admit them, and try not to repeat them.” “I've seen senior leaders fall short and even fail if they keep on with the behaviors that made them successful while leading self and leading others and they move into leading the organization but don't mature to strategic thinking.” “Be strategic and be decisive. A lot of times, people … haven't learned how to move from leading others to making decisions that affect an organization, ... the programs, and how that organization relates to others. … Move up into the strategic decision-making realm.” “Type “A”s out there, hear me! You want to control everything and it can drive you crazy. And if you don't let it go it will burn you out.” “The most powerful thing you can do is to release your control and release your power and give your power away.” “The best leaders cultivate their humility, which is really hard to do as you advance up in the ranks. Whether it's the military or if it's a private sector, or public non-profit, the more senior you get, people are treating you a little differently up in the ranks.” “What you should be seeking is deep contentment and satisfaction. That comes with a different way of looking at life. It comes from balancing and this becomes the response.” “People never make good choices; they always have to learn from experience, right?” “So many people are in the leadership space and trying to teach leadership and it's not easy. … If you are trying to understand leadership, how to be a better leader, and finding it not easy, your symptoms are normal.” “The people who are going to be happiest, in the long run, … look to find out how they can contribute as part of a bigger purpose with values that they share. … They're going to persevere. They're going to put in more than they take out. They're going to be contributors.” “Lifelong learning is key to your ability to succeed in a meaningful way where you're meeting all of your objectives and you're staying motivated. Otherwise, you lose the meaning of life if you don't continue to focus on life-long learning.”   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Vice Admiral Sandra L. At this time of year – New Year's resolutions have worn off - they are sort of pushed to one side while we get on with the job of living.  We have got through nearly 2 years of Covid so we may almost resent the idea of New Year's Resolutions.  How can we do less but accomplish more? But we can be fearful – it is not to eliminate the things you care about from your life.  It's simply to get laser-focused on why they matter to you. We cannot do it all – that idea – we cannot do it all is a wonderful reminder or wake-up call for us women who often feel guilt-tripped into precisely doing it all – the perfect Mum, wife, or girl-friend, perfect career woman. We have a list of expectations as long as our arms and frankly, they are unfair and unjust and can lead to great frustration.  We wanted in this podcast to talk about some questions we can ask ourselves that could help our listeners to think about what they need to do less to accomplish more. That is different for everyone.Resources: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Greg McKeownBoundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life, Henry CloudAtomic Habits, James Clear Why You Need Essentialism? This is Episode 75 of The Jesus Society Podcast, and today I want to talk about dealing with difficult people. And the reason I want to talk about this today is that I've been dealing with some difficult people over the last few weeks. If you don't ever have any problems dealing with difficult people, then perhaps you can just skip this episode, but if, like many of us, you struggle to know how to deal with difficult people, then you might just find a few things in this episode that'll help. Join me today as we discuss: 1. Some of the types of difficult people we encounter. 2. Some biblical guardrails to help govern our interactions with difficult people and at least keep us from getting off into the ditches. 3. The tricky business of dealing with fools. 4. How the book of Nehemiah can really help us when it comes to difficult people. ______________________________ As always, we'd appreciate it if you'd tell others about the podcast. Sary referenced the author Brianna Wiest book “The Minds Journal”.  The books that she is accredited for writing are 101 essays to change the way you think, The Truth About Everything and The Human Element. The Mind Journal is an online multi authored collaborative weblog discussing psychological relationships, mental health, parenting, abuse, self development and astrology. The owner is Mind's Journal OPC . Founder Sakahi Choidhary. Key people Linda Greyman. 2. Sary said boundaries means” having the courage to live a life you are proud of and start over if need be. Boundaries, according to Positive Psychology, is a limit or space between you and the other person - a clear place where you begin and the other person ends. The purpose of setting a healthy boundary is of course to protect and take good care of you. 3. You will learn to remove habitual ways of thinking and behaving, align with your authentic self, and respond to situations in your life from a place of conscious choice.

Have you ever experienced conflict and didn't know how to resolve it? Have you ever made your own issues more insignificant than others?    So many of us attempt to avoid conflict by performing our way into acceptance or approval, yet when we actually come face to face with an issue, we realize that it's rooted in a much deeper internal struggle.   Conflict begins within. Before we can address conflict resolution, we must first resolve the issues within our own hearts and minds. Avoiding conflict can cause more pain, but understanding conflict can bring us true peace.    Today's guest is not only a Purpose To Platform and Command The Stage graduate, but she's also on a mission to spread the message that the root of peace is identity.   Patrice Grimes is known as The Peace Curator, a Transformational Speaker, and is the Founder and CEO of The Oasis Space, LLC. A seasoned award winning HR professional, Patrice utilized her relationship building, coaching, and leadership skills in the corporate world to transition into a broader holistic approach that starts outside of the workplace. She now coaches and serves as a place of refuge for high achieving, "go-getter" women, and helps them to identify HEALTHY conflict resolution strategies while embracing their authentic identity to become successful P.E.A.C.E. Pursuits.   Patrice believes one of the major keys of conflict resolution is to ditch performance based complexes in exchange for embodying peace. As the podcast host of The Oasis Space, Patrice provides personal insight and guest interview enlightenment to equip her community to solve their identity crisis and unleash the peace within.     Key discussion points from this episode include: Journey Through An Identity Crisis - 04:43 Conflict Starts Within - 13:06 Conflict Avoidance - 14:42 Conflict Aggression - 19:36 Normalizing Conflict - 27:00 Finding Peace & Fulfillment 31:36 From Purpose To Platform - 33:16   Connect With Patrice Grimes Instagram: @ thepeacecurator Website: https://sociatap.com/ThePeaceCurator/ This episode is brought to you by my 5-day challenge, Committed To The Call.    Are you a coach, consultant, author, speaker or a service based entrepreneur of any kind? Often as latter-day saint women, we struggle with wondering where we belong in the great plan of happiness if our lives are looking very different from how that plan is typically perscribed. In the eleventh episode of the M3 Bearcast, a conversation about dating multiple people spawns many other topics about what it means to date. Do you allow someone to try to buy your affection with material things?  If you are dating someone who is seeing other people does that make you feel like you're in competition with those other people? All of these questions come up as I try to explain my philosophy of dating. Jeffery Roman and Woodrow Thompson help me hash out these issues and a lot more in this episode. There's a saying in the personal growth world - “what we resist, persists.”  Maybe it's your Words… How well does your “thought bubble to speech bubble” filter work? Perhaps - like me - you need to start drafting emails or social media responses prior to “going live.”  The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians suggested these “true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, of moral excellence and praiseworthy” - how's THAT for a filter? It's pretty easy to demand others Respect us, but how easy is it to model out the kind of behavior that promotes respect both ways? What do your boundaries look like? Do you recognize the boundaries of others? I always recommend the book Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend, we'll put it in the show notes.Perhaps Understanding yourself is the place to start.  When you do, it's easier to begin to understand others.Resources mentioned in this episode:  (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases)Blog Post: When I grow up I want to be… [1:52]Philippians 4:8  [12:31]Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life by Cloud and Townsend (#CommissionsEarned) [13:03]Get involved!Gab your FREE “Ultimate DISC communication Cheat Sheet”Get your own DISC Assessment, and don't forget the 10% discount (code "PODCAST") at check out!Email me at andrea@theintentionaloptimist.com  so I can be your professional encourager!Join the Intentional Optimists Facebook GroupFollow on Instagram @theintentionaloptimistLinked In Andrea JohnsonSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/AndreaJohnson)

In today’s episode, Tijana talks about four major points: 1. Organizing our day to day thoughts. 2. Deciding that we are going to do something about our emotions:          A. Write forgiveness letters.          B. Communicate our feelings to the people who are in our lives on               a day to day.          C. Find a therapist who can help us with our emotions as we                          reflect on our forgiveness letters. 3. Designating a specific time to focus on our day to day tasks. 4. Allowing ourselves to grieve by writing letters, talking about our loss, and finding ways to honor those we’ve lost. Remembering that we do not need to dismiss what is in our mind, but changing how we think about our thoughts is key. We also don’t need to do this alone.  Here are the links to the sites and books referenced in today’s episode: www.thethoughtsthatbind.com and www.amazingmovement.com Boundaries by Henry Cloud: Boundaries Updated and Expanded Edition: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life

In this episode of The Idealcast, Gene Kim sits down with Team of Team’s coauthor and CEO of Crosslead, David Silverman, and Director of Research and Development at CrossLead, Jessica Reif, for a two-part interview.  In Team of Teams, David and his coauthors explained how the Joint Special Forces Task Force in Iraq was struggling to achieve its mission, and how they turned it into a success. Their experience led to a deep and critical rethinking of almost everything in US military services and in the commercial industry. Now at CrossLead, David works with Jessica Reif to continue researching and codifying these practices into their management framework. In Part 1 of the interview, Gene and his guests discuss the structure and dynamics of the transformation described in Team of Teams and how these leadership characteristics are needed today in the new ways of working. This leadership framework reinforces the concepts of common purpose, shared consciousness, empowerment, and trust within organizations to help teams work together more effectively in complex environments, particularly when they have to continuously adapt to change. Stay tuned for Part 2.   BIO: David Silverman Entrepreneur, bestselling author, and former Navy SEAL, David Silverman is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of CrossLead, Inc. Founded in 2016, CrossLead is a technology company whose leadership and management framework is used by leaders and companies around the globe.   In 2015, David co-authored the New York Times bestselling leadership and management book Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World. As a thought leader on culture change, high-performing teams, and leadership, he is a frequent guest speaker for business leaders and conferences around the globe. After his 13-year career as a Navy SEAL, David and a group of like-minded friends sought to reinvent the way the world does business in today’s dynamic environment. This summer, I decided I needed time on my own for a personal vacation to get away from the hustle and bustle of my busy life to write, focus on myself, and just RELAX. I drove six hours, two states away, to arrive at what was anything but a relaxing spot, just to turn around and come home the next day. What I learned was that this burnout I was feeling was because of boundaries I had neglected to set, time I wasn't stewarding well, and avoidance of self-care. Take a listen as I share how to take control of these areas as a way to avoid burnout and create moments for yourself right now, wherever you're at, with whatever you've got. What is the church? Have you ever thought about that? Really thought about it? Maybe you'd say it's the collection of saved people? And you'd be right. Maybe you'd say it's the bride of Christ (Eph. 5:25-27)? Right again. Or maybe you'd use Paul's language in 1 Tim. 3:15 and say the church is the pillar and support of the truth. Well who's gonna argue with Paul. Of course. All those things are true, but I'd like to suggest there's something even more basic. AND, I'm gonna suggest that if we don't get this right, the church is never gonna be any of those other things we read about. And if you've been listening to this podcast from about Episode 2 on, you might know where I'm going here. Have you forgotten how to dream? I asked that question of a client the other day as he was talking through all of his options. Should he take the job that was a minor promotion (my words - not his) or should he take the job in the other company which is also a minor promotion? (Again - my words not his.)  As he described both, I could tell his heart could care less? “What do you really want?” I asked. He then started comparing the options between the two jobs.  No - I mean “What do YOU really want?” Take all of this off the table. What do you want to do if you could step back and money was not the issue? He stared at me as if I had just morphed into speaking Chinese.  After a moment of awkward silence, I said - “Have you forgotten how to dream?" After another moment of awkward silence, he said - “I have even forgotten what it means to dream."  Have you forgotten how to dream? (podcast outline) We have let others do the dreaming for us. They set the agenda. What has happened to all of us? We used to be a nation of dreamers and innovators. Now we have mostly become the settlers. Settle for this job. We settle for this pay raise. We settle for watching other people do amazing things and work hard. We settle for having our mind numbed by the corporate grind - mostly made up of meaningless meetings and poor leadership. We settle for having our after-hours time consumed with the mission of others - coaches for our kids, school systems who demand us to show up after hours, job functions to go to, or just the grind of the TV and endless TV commercials.  Much of what we suffer is in the name of taking care of our kids and preparing them for college, and then a job, where they will live in the same monotony we have.  Or we suffer from being entertained to death. Videos, video games, etc 3.2 Billion hours of Youtube are watched every month.  The number of hours people spend watching videos (aka watch time) on YouTube is up 60% year-over-year Why have we done this?  Corporate Lobotomy - You become numb. Your mind becomes disconnected from your feelings about work and purpose. You might have been here too long.  We are being taught to follow. The average parent is teaching their kids to get into college. Why?  We are NOT being taught to dream.  How to recapture the spirit of dreaming! Find ways to be inspired.  Find new people who fascinate you to hang around them.  Be careful who you hang around! Who You Spend Time With Is Who You Become. Find new ideas to try. Those things you always wanted to do but never had the time, money, etc.  Make time by quitting the activities that are adding no value to your life.  Does it truly provide you joy?  Do you look forward to doing it - or are you just in the habit of doing it?  All about people. Like it or not - people are the thing that inspires us. People who are doing amazing things. People who are passionate about what they do. People who we connect with on ideas or purposes.  Quit the relationships that are adding no value! "Boundaries Updated and Expanded Edition: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life" by Henry Cloud Then Dream Failure is not the right outlook - to try and grow is the point.  The journey is important - not the destination.  See more possibilities: We tend not to see possibilities beyond Our degree Our company Our work experience Our zip code For example, in a recent meeting with a CIO who was looking for what is next, he thought his only options were more CIO roles or tech roles. He discounted all he knew.   We tend to kill ideas when we see someone already doing this.  How dare we enter the market?  Who am I to do this?  Walmart, Facebook, Google, started this way. Others were doing it - they did. So did the corner laundry mat owner. So did the person holding the job you now want.

"I’m sorry I can't, I just don't want to." I've long known that "NO" is a complete sentence, but it doesn't mean I've practiced it. Largely because people can be very impolite. And pushy! Not long ago I told somebody I would not be present at an event. Pressed I truthfully said I had some things that required my attention before heading out of town. The pressing and ridicule began. A common tactic of people. I dug in and exclaimed with greater force, "I will not be there and you won't shame me into attending." No is indeed a complete sentence. Dr. Henry Cloud is likely known as the father of boundaries. Read his books including Boundaries Updated and Expanded Edition: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life. Each of us has to determine and establish the boundaries that serve us. That doesn't mean we give each other the Heisman pose. It does mean we display enough grace to each other that we stop thinking only of ourselves and quit pressuring people to do what WE want them to do. I posted this over at Facebook just recently. Social media is N-O-T-O-R-I-U-S for poor behavior. Even by decent or good people. The whole "IBK" (idiot behind keyboard) mindset sometimes captivates any of us. We get stupid. Some more quickly than others. Not long ago a buddy of mine posted something that any reasonable person would have realized was very innocuous. In Messenger, a person took issue exclaiming she was "offended" because he had used the phrase "stinky people." ;) No grace. No consideration. No thoughtfulness. No mindfulness. Just an exclamation that she was offended. It was a joke about a king who has been dead for 400 years and an anonymous man. It wasn't directed at her or any particular group of people. Hello Thin Skin, meet offense! He was quite measured in his response. Not sure I would've been. Mostly because I often feel like the ninnies need a battle. Else, they'll always win. And we're severely outnumbered by them as it is. They're growing by leaps and bounds. Purveyors of wisdom appear to be shrinking, in spite of our collective efforts here at LTW. Reminder: SurroundedByNinnies.com is a domain I own. Click on it and check it out.  "NO" isn't a hateful response. Why do people who hear it think so? Because they're selfish ninnies. They're giving no consideration to the person who says, "No." They're brassy enough to think they DESERVE an explanation. You owe them. Or so they think. No, you don't. Intentions play a role. So do expectations. So let's think about those two notions, but let's do it reverse order. Expectations The reality of expectations is our perceptions. We perceive things the way we perceive them. Is that ingrained in us? Is it unchangeable? It's a debate, but this much appears true. Humans appear to be made of love (those of us who believe in God and the Word of God already believe this truth). Love is the number one addiction of all people. Cardiovascular disease is the number killer. But lack of love - and the stress created by it - likely kill many, many more. God designed us this way. To crave and seek love. To express that love toward others. Increasingly, brain scientists believe we're built to see the glass half full. Neuroscientists tell us we're born with a perfect core genetic code. We make choices and those choices impact our DNA. So our perfection can have negative genes piled on top of them, but those imperfect genes resulting from previous generations are closed or dormant. Those imperfect or negative perceptions are learned. The environment wakes up those negative genes. Two children can grow up in an identical environment but result in completely different ways of life. Because all of us, every minute of every day engage in thinking, feeling and choosing. Choosing to think negatively launches negative perceptions which will drive negative behavior. People can be saved from themselves,

SummaryBrian Mayer discusses the concept of boundaries in relationships or how to set limits without feeling guilty.  Boundaries are easy to talk about but more difficult to implement.  It takes practice and lots of encouraging support.  You will learn how to set appropriate boundaries so you can live a life of freedom.  We hope you enjoy today's message.  For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Today's episode is all the concept of Boundaries in Relationships in regard to a subsequent marriage that affects more people like biological and step children.          What is a Boundary?  A boundary is simply a property line to keep what is yours in and what is not yours out.  Think of houses and the property lines that are drawn around each home.  The history around Boundaries started several decades ago when research around how to help people with addictions took off.  This research began to take a look at the family system and found enabling behaviors by other family members.  This can also be called Co-Dependency.  Out of this co-dependency movement specifically related to addictions, came the term Boundaries and began to be applied to all relationship issues not just addiction issue.       A very helpful book about this topic is simply called Boundaries:  How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life by Henry Cloud and John Townsend.  They have also written one specific to marriages called Boundaries in Marriage.  When healthy boundaries are not in place it can cause issues like depression, anxiety, resentment, and anger.   By not implementing an appropriate boundary, you are replacing a temporary discomfort with a more permanent pain.  Boundaries sound easy in theory, but are hard to implement.  When we first try to install a boundary on someone that is encroaching we can feel guilty or like we are a bad person.   Sometimes we also have this mentality that we must be all things to all people and that is how the Golden Rule works – Do Unto Others as You Would have done to You.  However, if you are not healthy first then you are no good to someone else.  You will ultimately burn-out if you do not install good boundaries.  Myths of Boundaries According to Cloud and Townsend: I am selfish if I install a boundary. I am being disobedient if I say No. If I set limits, I will be hurt I will hurt others I'm angry I should feel guilty or bad Boundaries are Permanent Learning to not feel responsible for others thoughts, feelings, and actions.  For example, the kids being bored is not your responsibility.  Now of course day after day, if you never do anything with them then yes that is a problem.  But the fact is that they are responsible for how they feel.  If we do not allow them to learn to pull themselves out a funk, then they will be stunted in their growth as adults.      Can Love and Boundaries Exist Together:  Yes they can.  In fact, boundaries actually signal that love exists.  Implementing Boundaries shows the other person under what parameters that love can flourish.  Inside the boundaries amazing things will happen, outside the boundaries is where individuals can work on themselves.  How Do Implement a Boundary Successfully? You are One Step Closer because you are listening to this podcast Get Support.  Either find a group or ask a close friend.  Role play setting boundaries by being both the boundary setter and the one for whom the boundary is being set.  Do not beat yourself up when you try to set boundaries initially.  You may fail and you probably will fail.  Boundary setting is a process.  You will receive much resistance at first because people will not be used to this.  Final Thoughts: Practice, practice, practice Know that boundaries will help keep you healthy and in turn will help others recognize how to keep themselves healthy.  Think about the Expect failure and grow from it. 016 Hope for Healing from Physical and Domestic Abuse Episode Summary: If you have ever been the victim of physical or sexual abuse, been the target of domestic violence, or survived a traumatic event, then today is the perfect show for you. Today we’re talking about finding hope and healing after trauma, particularly domestic violence. On this episode, I had a very frank discussion with my friend, Melanie Pickett, who experienced a 15-year marriage that entailed domestic violence and sexual assault but shares how she found hope to go on. Melanie not only shared her story, but also the “red flags” that she missed that others need to be aware of. Melanie offers practical suggestions for what to do if you are in an abusive relationship, and how to hold on to hope. Quotables from the episode:  We will all go through hard times, but we have to remember that the trials are just a chapter not the entire story. Life will go on. After experiencing a traumatic event, trauma counseling can be so helpful and so healing. Even in the darkest nights, God still provided. One of the red flags Melanie missed was her husband’s extreme possessiveness which in the extreme isn’t about wanting to be with you but wanting to control and manipulate. Look at your relationships and ask yourself if they really line up with the love chapter in the Bible (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Is your relationship patient and kind? Not jealous or boastful or proud or rude? Does it not demand its own way? Is it not irritable and keep no record of being wrong? Does it rejoice over truth and not injustice? That is a good guideline for what a healthy relationship is like. Things to consider in your relationship: Are you afraid? Do you feel unsupported or that you can’t share your true feelings? You’re never more alive than when you are in pain, because that’s when you’re on your knees and God is really working. [click to tweet] Melanie never blamed God for what happened to her. She did, however, blame her ex-husband, but over time she came to a place where she could have compassion for how tormented he must have been. If you are in an abusive relationship, it’s not your fault. It’s not okay that it is happening, and you don’t deserve it. Financial concerns is not a reason to stay in an abusive relationship. God will work everything out. There is help, there is hope. You are not damaged goods. Even though the healing process is painful, there are better days ahead. Good Biblical therapy is key for moving on. Don’t stay in an abusive relationship because you think you can change a person. You can’t. Change has to come from God. Do not minimize your situation by thinking “Well, at least he’s not hitting me” because abuse is abuse and you don’t know when things will escalate, and it might cost you your life The most dangerous time for an abuse victim, is when they are trying to leave. Talk with a counselor, a pastor, a friend, or someone you trust. Make a plan, and then get out to safety. Episode Summary:   Today we’re going to be talking about the pain of the friendship relationships that steal your joy. Specifically, toxic friends. Have you ever struggled with a friendship that has gone array? Perhaps you invested yourself fully into a friendship only to find out that the relationship was a bit one-sided, or perhaps even a toxic friendship? If so, then today is the perfect show for you.   There's something wrong with your friendship, but you can't figure out what. Is everything in your head? Unfortunately, most of us have a few toxic friends over the course of our life. Toxic friendships happen to everyone, but we seldom identify the underlying issues while we battle confusion or the friendship breaks up. Friendships can be hard but breaking up is even harder. Maybe you're left bewildered in the friendship's wake, paralyzed to move forward. On today’s show we are going to be talking to Mary DeMuth. After wading through several difficult relationships with toxic friends, Mary reveals the seven different types of toxic friendships and empowers you to identify the messiest relationships causing you the greatest anguish.   I had the pleasure of reading an early copy of her book, The Seven Deadly Friendships and offered my written endorsement: "In 30 years as a mental health practitioner, I've had the privilege of working with patients who have struggled with and suffered because of toxic friends, akin to those detailed in The Seven Deadly Friendships. Mary helps us identify those toxic relationships and then points us to seven life-giving practices to help us receive and extend healthy friendships."   Quotables from the episode:   Have you ever had toxic friends? If so, you’ll want to listen to this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson. The toxic friendships are based on the seven deadly sins listed in Proverbs 6: haughty eyes, lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who sows discord in a family. Almost all sins are relational in some sort of way, whether they are relational toward God or toward others. The difficult relationships we face that coordinate with the seven deadly sins are: Narcissist Nolan, Unreliable Uma, Predator Paige, Conman Connor, Temptor Trevor, Faker Fiona, and Dramatic Drake. For each of these types of relationships, we need to know what the scriptures say about them, but we also need to ask ourselves the question, “Am I like this?” Relationships are built on two or more individuals, and we each play a role in their success or their failure. We need to examine our hearts and become better friends, because the stuff of life is built on friendships. There are a lot of divorce recovery books available, but until now there wasn’t a friendship divorce recovery book to guide us through such relationship breakups. Friendship breakups can be even more painful than a romantic breakup. Part of the reason for that is because we don’t expect it. When you are dating someone to find a mate, you anticipate kissing a few frogs before finding the prince to spend your life with. But especially as women, we tend to look at friendships and expect them to be lifelong and not just for a season. When they break up, we are left wondering “what’s wrong with me?” The deadly friendship that seemed like it would be the least common was actually one of the most common: Conman Connor. When you have equated a relationship with finances or money, which can be as simple as someone friending you on facebook only to turn around and ask you to buy their awesome product, that is quite common. Just about everyone has experienced that kind of a relationship. That is a transactional view of relationship and we need to be super cautious about that. When that happens we are left feeling dirty because we were used, and our relationship is undervalued because they only want you for the dollar sign. In today’s world, Faker Fiona is common. That’s someone with cameleon-like tendencies because we present one way online but often different in person. Narcissistic personalities are often difficult to identify because they present as charming and engaging, rather than controlling and manipulative. It can be hard after a friendship breakup because we blame ourselves even when people with predatory or narcissistic tendencies are skilled at preying on others. It helps to ask, “Why was I attracted to people who are so self-absorbed, or who were preying on me?” It often goes back to childhood, thinking that if we could just get those personality types to love us, then they would complete our incomplete story from childhood. The Lord has to be the completer of our story. He is perfect, He is loving, He loves me no matter what. He can complete that love need that we have. This is not meant to just point the finger, but to help us grow and change and become better friends to others. Relationship is a good thing. God said it was not good for Adam to be alone so He created a companion for Adam in the Garden of Eden. But sin has come into the world, so now it’s a matter of learning how to grow AND how to guard our heart. Jesus had very close relationships with twelve, not with thousands. He modeled for us how to choose good relationships and invest in relationships that want reciprocity. If we imagine the freedom to walk away, and think about how God may heal us, or heal the other person, that can truly be healing to know that things will be okay even if we walk away. It also helps to consult an unbiased party who is not involved in the relationship to get their perspective; either a trusted friend or a counselor. Whether you rely on a couple of close friends who have your back but will speak the truth in love, or a therapist who is unbiased and can offer an unbiased perspective, a neutral third party can reflect the truth back to you so that this doesn’t have to continue as a lifelong cycle. Therapy helps you determine why you continue to choose the same behavior repeatedly. If you feel like you are the one contributing to a relationship, we always have the opportunity to apologize, and repentance does amazing things. But it takes two for reconciliation. If God removes someone from your life, don’t go chasing after them. There is a reason He removed them. It’s not up to us to change other people, we are responsible for our own behavior. Don’t let past pain embitter you to future relationships. If you never open your heart again to safe community, you will spiral down in bitterness. Our prayer for you is that you might identify relationships that are truly not healthy friends, so you can do something about them and remain in community.   Scripture References:   “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” (Proverbs 13:20) “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (Proverbs 27:17)   Recommended Resources:   7 Deadly Friendships: How to Heal When Painful Relationships Eat Away at Your Joy by Mary DeMuth https://amzn.to/2xI5bL Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No To Take Control of Your Life by Cloud and Townsend https://amzn.to/2SorqAi https://drmichellebengtson.com/10-traits-grace-based-friends/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/ask-dr-b-surviving-a-friends-betrayal/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/who-is-your-best-friend/   Social Media Links for Host and Guest:   To contact Mary: Website: MaryDeMuth.comPrayEveryDay.show: https://www.marydemuth.com/category/pray-every-day-podcast/ Book: 7deadlyfriendships.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorMaryDeMuth Twitter: https://twitter.com/marydemuth Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marydemuth/    For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: To order Hope Prevails: https://drmichellebengtson.com/hope-prevails-book/ Website: https://drmichellebengtson.com/ Blog: https://drmichellebengtson.com/blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrMichelleBengtson Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrMBengtson (@DrMBengtson) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichellebengtson/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmichellebengtson/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/drbhopeprevails/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MichelleBengtson Radio Show Host: http://graceandtruthradio.world/shows/your-hope-filled-perspective/    Air Date: July 15, 2019   Guest: Mary DeMuth Mary DeMuth is a writer and speaker who loves to help people live re-storied lives. My guest, Dr. John Townsend literally wrote the book on boundaries and he shares some deep wisdom on how to set healthy boundaries while honoring our family members and others. You've got to take care of your energy, your heart and your emotions. You've got to take care of yourself and your health. So we have something to offer to our children. Summary Brian Mayer discusses the concept of boundaries in relationships or how to set limits without feeling guilty. Final Thoughts Practice, practice, practice Know that boundaries will help keep you healthy and in turn will help others recognize how to keep themselves healthy.  Think about the Expect failure and grow from it.                  Resources Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend Boundaries in Marriage by Henry Cloud and John Townsend Codependent No More by Melody Beattie The above resources are affiliate links, which means that The Remarried Life Podcast receives a percentage of the sale.  Your cost does not change.  By purchasing these items you are helping cover the cost of expenses to produce this podcast.  Thanks in advance for your continued support of the podcast! Maureen Singer's childhood days were spent in Minnesota. The oldest of three girls, she was in a leadership role right out of the crib. Her mother loved to dress all three of them alike. One particular Sunday she said, “I just cannot go to church looking like the rest of you.” That comment took her and her mother to the fabric store where her passion for sewing was ignited. Uniqueness and perfecting the task at hand were always the underlying thread to all her mother taught her—along with basic sewing skills.   Maureen is the mother of 7 beautiful children; five daughters and two sons. They are the reason a “home-based” business was a perfect fit for her. She was able to stay home with her children and still attend the field trips and school functions.  In 1993, she launched “Singer Sewing Room”.She attended some of Cheryl Strickland’s classes and was eager for education. She has taught sewing classes to young girls and has also taught Home Dec classes at a local fabric store in St. Louis. She enjoys teaching to a room full of students who want to learn about roman shades and pillows and ways to decorate their personal spaces. Maureen is a member of the St. Louis WCAA local chapter, and is a past President of the WCAA chapter, and has attended the CWC Conferences. Maureen is in a great position and loves what she does. Connecting with new people and helping them to create beautiful rooms in their home—one room at a time is something she enjoys. She is thankful for the talent and favor of God in her life. Enneagram Twos are some of the most caring, kind, supportive, upbeat, and tenderhearted people on God's good green earth. Three of my closest friends are Twos, and together they radiate enough love and generosity of spirit to heat a metroplex. In Enneagram-speak they're called The Helpers. On today's episode, I'm joined by renowned Enneagram teacher, author, consultant, and Enneagram Two, Dr. Beatrice Chestnut Ph.D.  A student of the Enneagram system of personality since 1990, she is the author of my all-time favorite Enneagram book, The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge. Enneagram Twos are far more complicated than they appear at first glance. Who better to describe what it's like to be a Helper than a Black-belt Enneagram expert and teacher. Beatrice was so good we decided to record two shows with her! Whether you're a Two or not, this show contains so much insight into the Enneagram it will blow your mind! Beatrice has taught at Northwestern University and was trained in group facilitation at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. She served as President of the International Enneagram Association from 2006-2007 and teaches workshops on the Enneagram internationally, focusing on using it as a tool for leadership development and personal transformation. Successful relationships are built on mutual respect of another person's boundaries and limitations. When someone encroaches another person's boundaries, it means no less than trouble.  One of the most simple way of creating boundaries for yourself is by practicing a graceful way of saying no when you feel that it's against your principle, your health, or your well being. Unfortunately, many fall into becoming men pleasers which simply means giving up on someone's boundaries.  Today's episode, we'll dig deeper into this topic and we'll have Dr. John Townsend, New York Times bestselling author, business consultant, leadership coach, psychologist, and author of Boundaries: When to Say Yes, When to Say No-To Take Control of Your Life.
