Jason Bentley ’92 says his stint as general manager of KXLU, LMU’s independent radio station, occurred during “the golden age of college rock.” Bentley went on to greater fame as a KCRW DJ and music director. Here he talks about his days in the KXLU studios and his new podcast, The Backstory, featuring interviews with artists.
This week's guest isn't only a friend but is by far one of the most talented music curators of the past couple of decades. Jason Bentley has created soundscapes that are etched in all of our minds from his shows on KCRW radio to his work on The Matrix Films soundtracks. Jason has not only identified the greatest talent in the field of electronic music but has been integral in establishing it as a music genre. Additionally, Jason is a talented DJ himself having performed in some of the largest festivals in the world, including Coachella. In this episode, we explore his growth from curator to creator. Key Takeaways [1:35] Nick welcomes Jason and after catching up on the days when they used to be office neighbors, asks him to talk a bit about his path from A&R to DJing and how he tumbled into working The Matrix soundtrack. [6:35] Jason was always a leader when it came to electronic music and introduced Nick to Daft Punk. He touches on the advocacy work he had to do to promote the democratizing of dance and electronic music. [8:49] Remixing, producing is something Jason always did at a more executive level, and finally — enabled by the pandemic — he taught himself Ableton Live! He talks about the feeling of ownership he loves about creation. [11:30] Studio production and live DJ stage gig are very different aspects of a performance, from sonic range to storytelling, Jason explains the different styles and music that those two approaches entail. [13:30] Jason opens up on what led him to hang up his headphones — a move that by his own admission may be really bold or completely idiotic but that ultimately felt like the right thing to do at the right time. [19:44] Nick and Jason discuss Jason's weekly Saturday night show Metropolis — which Nick invites people to listen to without fear, it's more of a beautiful soundscape — Jason talks about the process of creating that show each week and the quantity of material he receives from which to build his weekly story. [23:05] Jason's pride point is currently in controlling the ebb and flow and the storytelling of his music as well as the mixing. [25:36] Six-and-a-half months of live-streaming a radio show was quite the experiment; Jason talks about his experience of continuing his work during COVID-19 lockdown — smoke machines, neon lights, and lasers on Instagram! He talks about being pulled off the live stream periodically by bots looking to flag major label intellectual property (he notes it never happened for underground import stuff). [30:15] Breaking away from radio to give himself space to create, becoming a father, and starting a record label… Nick wonders what Jason's year would have been WITHOUT the pandemic. [32:00] “There is no creativity that should go to waste” Jason talks about the importance of believing in your art and understanding that it has value. From the first single on his label with his friend Latroit to shooting a music video, Jason speaks to just trusting himself. [40:27] What is Jason currently listening to? [42:57] Nick thanks Jason Bentley for coming on the show and sharing so much of his personal and creative journey. Thanks for listening! This week we take our Star Wars conversation to the next level with special guest Nathan Dallon! Does the Star Wars of today hold up to the prequels? Should they? (21:30) Get ready to have your mind blown! Very few movies have generated more talk and garnered more loyalty than Star Wars, but why? Beyond its innovative filmmaking, these stories teach us about good and evil, and about ourselves. However, fans left the most recent movie The Last Jedi, with a mixture of reactions. Were you confused? Mad? Pleased but bewildered? (1:06:50) Do you sense any political agendas written between the lines of this most recent bout of movies? (1:02:00) After so many changes in directors, will episode 9 be a patch job of The Last Jedi? (1:17:00) We also get some great thoughts via voicemail from Jason Bentley on the kind of writing needed to sustain the Star Wars franchise. What's up music lovers! Before we get to anything else, I want to bring you attention to ZZK Films. It is an offshoot of ZZK Records which, as you know, if one of my favorite labels of all time. They are producing some amazing films/documentaries about different aspects of Latin American mucis. Check the preview on their website. To get them finished, promoted, and distributed however, they are looking for some crowd funding. If you love the music like I do, go over and throw them some change. Think about all that garbage that comes through your cable box and you're paying at least $60 a month for that! This is something of actual cultural value. It's the giving time of year so think about it. There are 5 or so days left in the campaign. Oh and they've also got some fund matching happening! Link Further reading: New York Times - Found in Ecuador: A Time Capsule for the EarsNPR - The Lost Tapes Of Caife: A Vintage Ecuadorian Record Label Revived Remezcla - This Short Doc Traces the Deep African Roots of Music from the Ecuadorian Coast Bandcamp (best title!) - ZZK Records: How a “Random Gringo” from Texas Helped Latin American Dance Music Take Over the World Now to the task at hand, a few month ago I had the amazing opportunity to make a personal pilgrimage to my musical Mecca if you will. I finally got to go to London to see some drum and bass. And this wasn't just any show. This was Hospital Records' very first outdoor music festival, Hospitality in the Park #HITP. The show was incredible. I saw so many of my favorite producers. It was an embarassment of riches for me. If you look at my notes below, you can see I couldn't keep myself at one stage very long! There were so many artists that got left off this mix though. You can go on Spotify and listen to the playlist (link) I put together before the show to help me figure out who I wanted to go see. It it a far more inclusive list. But, it's not a carefully selected continuous mix like you have here. I'm not gonna lie though. I did have two screw ups while I was recording the mix live. (Pressed pause instead of play!!) I made the executive decision to go in and do a little post production and clean it up though so it will sound seamless. As a side note, I want to shout out KCRW for having such an amazing online catalog of playlists from their shows. I have this weird musical memory thing where I can very specifically remember the circumstances of when or where I heard a certain song. For example I know exactly what I was doing when I first heard High Contrast and thanks to the KCRW playlist back catalog, I was able to go back over a decade and figure out exactly what day that was. And more importantly, that is was Scott Silva that was subbing in for Jason Bentley on Metropolis that day. I am going to have to write him a thank you note! Jason Bentley came over to the podcast table (yes it's a table) at Zach's house to spend some time talking about KCRW, Los Angeles, the importance of music in life and how the musical landscape is changing right before our very eyes. Jason is the host of KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and also serves as the stations music director. "I think being passionate about music and culture is fundamentally what enables me to be successful. I'm driven to share that excitement, whether it's DJ'ing at an art exhibit, working on a film project, or broadcasting from the radio station every day. It gives me a real sense of purpose." That purpose has taken shape growing up at KCRW, beginning as a phone volunteer the summer after high school, scoring a nighttime air shift in 1992 with Metropolis running for 16 years, and ultimately being promoted to music director of the station.
