Have you met Tamino? We recently premiered his latest, “Willow,” on Morning Becomes Eclectic, a song of release and renewal from his album Every Dawn’s a Mountain — written in his new home of New York City. “The paradox of the willow is that when it dies and loses all its vines, its trunk gets to see the sun,” Tamino explains. “In other words, its heart gets a new life. The tree no longer weeps and finally finds solace in the glow of the sun.” Let’s give it a whirl.

Born in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, Vaughn grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia.[2][3] At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. He started playing the drums in a garage band when he was 12, then transitioned to the guitar. After school, he would go to a local department store, where he would borrow the guitars and practice over chord sheets.[4] He attended Audubon High School.[1]In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together for five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazines as well as video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his Downtown album. Vaughn embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S., and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues" a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films (Favorite Mopar and Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama), as well as appeared as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows Fresh Air and World Cafe. In 1995, Vaughn moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. That '70s Show soon followed, and for the next ten years, Vaughn would provide music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots (Men Behaving Badly, Normal, Ohio, Grounded for Life). He also provided scores for several films (Psycho Beach Party, The Independent, Scorpion Spring) and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the Swingers soundtrack CD). Support the Show. It's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story? They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazine and video airplay on MTV. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom "3rd Rock From The Sun." "That 70s Show" soon followed, and for the next ten years Ben would provide award-winning music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots ("Men Behaving Badly," "Normal, Ohio," "Grounded For Life"). He also provided scores for several films ("Psycho Beach Party," "The Independent," "Scorpion Spring") and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the "Swingers" soundtrack CD). Somehow Ben found time to create the legendary "Rambler '65." Recorded entirely in his car, this much-publicized album (and subsequent short film) is still considered by many to be a classic document of a man and his dream. Since then, Ben has released “Designs In Music," “Vaughn Sings Vaughn Vols. 1-3,” “Texas Road Trip” (recorded in Austin, Texas with Doug Sahm's band) , "Five By Five" and "Piece de Resistance" by the Ben Vaughn Quintet and the solo acoustic album, “Imitation Wood Grain And Other Folk Songs.” Add to that an Italian dance hit (a DJ re-mix of “Hey Romeo”), airplay of “Jerry Lewis in France” on Bob Dylan's radio show (complete with Dylan's recitation of Ben's resume), and two recent tours in France and you're looking at what continues to be a very interesting career. Occasionally, Ben takes a break from his syndicated radio show (“The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn”) to perform live in the US and Europe. The dates are randomly planned so catch him while you can! Neal Francis: “I just wanted to be honest about everything, from my musical influences to my story,” muses Neal Francis. After years of dishonest living—consumed by drugs, alcohol, and addiction—such sincerity is jarring from the 32-year-old Chicago-based musician. Liberated from a self-destructive past and born anew in sobriety, Francis has captured an inspired collection of songs steeped in New Orleans rhythms and early 70s rock n’ roll. His music evokes a bygone era of R&B’s heyday while simultaneously forging a new path on the musical landscape. Ohio-based Karma Chief Records (a subsidiary of rising soul label Colemine Records) released his debut LP Changes in September 2019. The album received praise on several notable radio outlets including KEXP, KCRW’s The Morning Becomes Eclectic, and BBC Radio 6. Francis and his four-piece band performed during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, sharing the stage with The Meters and other legends. In 2019 alone he hit the road with Black Pumas, Steel Pulse, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Dumpstaphunk and others. Francis pledges to tour relentlessly to promote his own music. “I’m doing this to fulfill a drive within myself, but also to pay tribute to the gifts I’ve been given. This week's guest isn't only a friend but is by far one of the most talented music curators of the past couple of decades. Jason Bentley has created soundscapes that are etched in all of our minds from his shows on KCRW radio to his work on The Matrix Films soundtracks. Jason has not only identified the greatest talent in the field of electronic music but has been integral in establishing it as a music genre. Additionally, Jason is a talented DJ himself having performed in some of the largest festivals in the world, including Coachella. In this episode, we explore his growth from curator to creator.   Key Takeaways [1:35] Nick welcomes Jason and after catching up on the days when they used to be office neighbors, asks him to talk a bit about his path from A&R to DJing and how he tumbled into working The Matrix soundtrack. [6:35] Jason was always a leader when it came to electronic music and introduced Nick to Daft Punk. He touches on the advocacy work he had to do to promote the democratizing of dance and electronic music. [8:49] Remixing, producing is something Jason always did at a more executive level, and finally — enabled by the pandemic — he taught himself Ableton Live! He talks about the feeling of ownership he loves about creation. [11:30] Studio production and live DJ stage gig are very different aspects of a performance, from sonic range to storytelling, Jason explains the different styles and music that those two approaches entail. [13:30] Jason opens up on what led him to hang up his headphones — a move that by his own admission may be really bold or completely idiotic but that ultimately felt like the right thing to do at the right time. [19:44] Nick and Jason discuss Jason's weekly Saturday night show Metropolis — which Nick invites people to listen to without fear, it's more of a beautiful soundscape — Jason talks about the process of creating that show each week and the quantity of material he receives from which to build his weekly story. [23:05] Jason's pride point is currently in controlling the ebb and flow and the storytelling of his music as well as the mixing. [25:36] Six-and-a-half months of live-streaming a radio show was quite the experiment; Jason talks about his experience of continuing his work during COVID-19 lockdown — smoke machines, neon lights, and lasers on Instagram! He talks about being pulled off the live stream periodically by bots looking to flag major label intellectual property (he notes it never happened for underground import stuff). [30:15] Breaking away from radio to give himself space to create, becoming a father, and starting a record label… Nick wonders what Jason's year would have been WITHOUT the pandemic. [32:00] “There is no creativity that should go to waste” Jason talks about the importance of believing in your art and understanding that it has value. From the first single on his label with his friend Latroit to shooting a music video, Jason speaks to just trusting himself. [40:27] What is Jason currently listening to? [42:57] Nick thanks Jason Bentley for coming on the show and sharing so much of his personal and creative journey. Thanks for listening! There has always been ways of getting expression out. In the sixties I was in High School we had AM radio and FM radio. There was a show called "Morning Becomes Eclectic," that was on a station that played a little of anything. That had all kinds of music including free jazz. In the bigger cities like Los Angeles in the late sixties and early seventies they had everything. There wasn't a lot of country western actually, you had to drive up to Bakersfield to hear that. When I first moved out to California The Whiskey A-Go-Go was in its heyday. Taj was playing at the Whiskey A-Go-Go with Jesse Ed Davis. Jesse got off the stage and I went up on stage and said, "hey man you sound beautiful." Paul introduced me to Don and Larry Taylor and we did a couple of gigs at The Troubadour. They were pretty well received and then Larry said, "man this ain't it, this is jaaassss...he wanted to do something else and he left. I brought in a friend of mine from Fresno named Victor Conte. Victor became famous for a couple of other things- he played with Tower of Power-he's a great, great bass player. I'm willing to bet that if he hasn't touched his bass in ten years he could pick it up and be as funky as anyone on the planet right now. Bad jazz is when people are playing real hard and nobodies listening. Lagos used to call it "Bar Mitzvah Jazz." No matter what kind of music you play people kind of expect a show. There's so much offer on cable, concerts are huge and the magic of ensemble playing which is people who can play even if there just playing chords behind somebody else. Even when it's a singer it can be smokin" if its ensemble playing and people are listening to each other. Don't get me wrong, we practiced for hours. It's not a question of practicing, what it is a question of is hearing the other person. Getting off on backing up, you don't have to take a solo to get off. It's not like watching a porn movie. Your part of it. If your playing rhythm guitar behind Sugarcane, your part of it. Paul (Lagos) knew so much. He used to study Joseph Schillinger compositions. He and Cane used to play duets that would just fly off, you can hear that on the recordings but we did that all the time. Sometimes that's shit would last 15 minutes. We do the intro to the song, Don would sing a couple of versus, he'd take a solo, sing another verse. The bass player and I would stop and he and Paul would play for 15 minutes. When we came back in it was knowing when to come back in. This isn't to say that Victor and I were so brilliant we just came in at the right time. No one ever said, "I needed you cats to come in later or early because their was no later/earlier it was just so obvious from the ensemble playing that we were doing. We would bring it down to a certain level and come back in and that's called music." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Musician, Artist, and Artist Advocate, Brad Lyons is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!  Today is part is the second half of a two-part conversation.   Brad leaves nothing on the table in this episode opening up about his artistic journey. He also, throw down the gantlet in this episode and challenges every artist and every consumer of art to ask themselves hard questions about the current state of how we consume and acquire art.   In this episode: What constitutes a proper fan Why Artist's need to ask themselves about their own integrity How asking for what you need as an artist and risking offending someone is imperative to your success as an artist How art driven by data feedback is changing artist and the art itself.  Why he believes we need to start buying directly from the artists   Oceanship is the touring and recording musical enterprise of Brad Lyons — presently based in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada. One month into his science degree at University of Waterloo, Brad made the decision to focus on music. He ran an ad in the paper that read Experienced Singer Seeks Band, though he had no formal singing experience. Brad formed the band left Pencey, and five years later signed a record deal with ARISTA/BMG Records USA under then president LA Reid. In 2003, for reasons of artistic divergence, Brad parted company with left Pencey members and formed Oceanship. In 2006 the Oceanship EP was recorded. The self-titled EP, packaged in hand- stamped paper bags (as all Oceanship releases are), did well domestically and internationally resulting in a PBS feature of track All The Kids, an XM Radio Verge award, and an extensive tour of China. KCRW, the Los Angeles radio station famous for its discovery of emerging talent (Coldplay, Jeff Buckley), was quick to feature Oceanship’s track “Don’t Wear Me Out” on their “Morning Becomes Eclectic” program as Today’s Top Tune. Hotblack, another track from the album, went to #1 on commercial radio in Birmingham, Alabama, and its video was nominated for Best Music Video by The World Animation Film Festival alongside Coldplay. Multiple tracks from the Oceanship debut album have been placed in international TV shows such as One Tree Hill, Army Wives, The Border, Degrassi TGN, Rookie Blue, among others – fourteen TV shows and movies to date. In 2018 Brad released Bella Blue, the follow-up to his self titled album. While music is best listened to rather than described — especially by the artist — David Gordon, the former Warner A&R who signed some of the all-time music greats, including Prince, Dire Straits, and Van Halen, has this to say about it: "Bella Blue stacks up favorably with my all-time favorite CD (and that musician) — on all scores. Oceanship has a tough of the brilliant... the frequent use of the child's choir, a cappella no less, that bespeaks innocence and mirrors the songs on a meta-level; the crystalline brilliance of lines such as, 'She said: Time is a wave, and it's drowning us', and more, so much more. Bella Blue is a keeper. I am wowed.   Artists United The problem with arts advocacy is two-fold. One, it involves few artists. The very party whose name is on the marquee has neglected to participate. Two, of the artists who are participating, essentially none are speaking about the core of the crisis — the shallow ethics of the average fan and the average artist. The artist is the primary. Artists make art, and the fan and arts industry emerge from that art. In order to turn the tide of the arts movement, we must turn the primary. We must recruit a sufficient number of deeper artists under a common banner — a banner of depth. Artists United proposes to turn the primary by teaching them, or reconnecting them to, a deeper understanding of artist, including their roles and responsibilities. We propose to do this through a series of artistic live presentations and filmed vignettes to be aired online. Artists United is an organization dedicated to teaching and promoting a new dimension of art and artist in an attempt to solve problems within the arts ecosystem and accelerate emerging consciousness. Artists United explores the full artist. We go beyond the artist as simply a maker of artifacts. FINALLY A NEW PODCAST!!! Yes, it's been way too long...had a "slab leak" that flooded my home and all my stuff (including my dj equipment) had to be moved to storage while my home was repaired. About 3 months later I was able to move back in and I was so excited to get my equipment back so that I could record something new. I decided to go back and put some of my very favorite tunes in this latest podcast, in story form of course :) Some of these were hits, and some went fairly unnoticed...but, all are classics IMO...hope you enjoy! Jason Bentley came over to the podcast table (yes it's a table) at Zach's house to spend some time talking about KCRW, Los Angeles, the importance of music in life and how the musical landscape is changing right before our very eyes.  Jason is the host of KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and also serves as the stations music director.  "I think being passionate about music and culture is fundamentally what enables me to be successful. I'm driven to share that excitement, whether it's DJ'ing at an art exhibit, working on a film project, or broadcasting from the radio station every day. It gives me a real sense of purpose." That purpose has taken shape growing up at KCRW, beginning as a phone volunteer the summer after high school, scoring a nighttime air shift in 1992 with Metropolis running for 16 years, and ultimately being promoted to music director of the station.

Dengue Fever: From Cambodia to the World Stage

Elisa Parker of KVMR speaks with Zac Holtzman, co-founder of Dengue Fever.  The band is headlining at Worldfest on Saturday, July 18th, 2015. Plunging headlong into their second decade as a band, DENGUE FEVER’s (www.denguefevermusic.com) new album, The Deepest Lake, their fifth full-length of all-new material, comes at a critical juncture in the bands career. In 2013, after forming their own label Tuk Tuk Records, the band crossed over into a brave new world as both artist and record label owner’s. Today find themselves able to wear two hats – as creative musicians with no boundaries as well as label owners who make their own decisions on where, when and how to fabricate their career.  The net result is the aforementioned, The Deepest Lake, a record with more musical diversions than the Mekong River itself. Released in January 27, 2015 – US/Canada & February 2, 2015 in the rest of the world, the ten tracks on The Deepest Lake will satiate longtime fans as well as newcomers looking for something altogether different. Widely recognized for their trademark blend of 60’s Cambodian pop and psychedelic rock, Dengue Fever’s latest release expands their musical palette to include Khmer rap, Latin grooves, Afro percussion, layered Stax-like horns and more.  From the keyboard and percussion heavy opening track, “Tokay”, lead singer Chhom Nimol’s unmistakable bird-like Khmer vocals lead the band on a evolutionary musical journey on The Deepest Lake. Be it the John Doe & Exene boy/girl vocals on “Rom Say Sok” that gets your indie grooves on or the six plus minute psychedelic jam on “Cardboard Castles”, it’s pretty evident that this is a band looking to take chances and not play it safe. By following their instincts on this record and letting many of the final tracks come out of extended jams when demo’ing the album, the band played to their musical strengths. No longer was there a need to ‘find’ a song, the songs on The Deepest Lake came to them.  The band’s newly established independence as both label owner and artist marks yet another chapter in the continual evolution of a group unlike many other bands in the Los Angeles music scene. It all began in 2002 when Dengue Fever formed and released their eponymous debut (2003). Packed chock full of ‘lost’ Khmer covers, the band paid homage to Khmer rock, a hybrid of Vietnam War era surf, psych and classic rock performed by Cambodian giants like Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Sinn Sisamouth.  The bands sophomore release, critically acclaimed sophomore follow-up, Escape from Dragon House (2005) found them writing and performing original material in earnest. Amazon.com named Dragon House the #1 international release for 2005, and Mojo magazine named it in their Top 10 World Music releases of 2006.  In 2008, their third release Venus on Earth became the band's best selling album. It garnered praise from both critics and fans the world over. In fact, Venus on Earth found support from iconic musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Ray Davies who each made mention of the band in the press.  DENGUE FEVER’s fourth release, Cannibal Courtship (Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group), was released in April 2011 and found the band expanding beyond their usual comfort zone and experimenting with new sounds. The roots of the band began in the late 1990’s with a 6-month trek through Southeast Asia by Keyboardist Ethan Holtzman. Returning to Los Angeles with a suitcase crammed full of Cambodian cassette tapes, Holtzman and his brother Zac, who had discovered the same music while working at a record store in San Francisco, reunited. The brothers soon bonded over their love of vintage Cambodian rock and in 2002 founded the band with saxophonist, David Ralicke (Beck/Brazzaville); drummer, Paul Dreux Smith; and bassist, Senon Williams (Radar Brothers). Shortly thereafter the members were on hot pursuit for the ideal Cambodian chanteuse to complete their outfit. After a short period of musical courtship that began at a Cambodian nightclub in Long Beach, Ca., Nimol joined the band when she realized the band shared a genuine passion for the music and culture of her homeland.  It’s that cross pollination of Khmer rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock and the British Invasion sound that has pushed the band to heights they could only dream of in 2002. DENGUE FEVER as performed in front of thousands of fans at such noted music festivals as WOMAD (UK, AUS, NZ), WOMEX (Spain), Melbourne Festival (AUS), Glastonbury (UK), Bumerbshoot, (USA), Transmusicales (France), Roskilde (Denmark), Electric Picnic (Ireland), Peace and Love (Sweden), Treasure Island (USA) among many others. Their songs have appeared in films such as City of Ghosts, Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers, The Hangover 2, the Showtime series Weeds, the HBO’s hit series True Blood (who named an entire episode after one of their songs) and featured the band’s music, CBS’ series CSI: Las Vegas and numerous independent documentaries.  With band profiles in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Mojo, Uncut, Magnet, Wired, NPR’s “Fresh Air”, Radio Australia, KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and "World Café Live", the time is truly ripe for at least another decade of breaking down more musical barriers. The Deepest Lake is the first, glorious musical step in that new direction.
