B. Cox reviews Gang Starr's classic fourth album Hard To Earn as it turns 30. After the critical success of 1992's Daily Operation, Guru and DJ Premier took a brief hiatus to pursue individual projects. Guru launched his Jazzmatazz series and Premier became one of the most sought after producers in industry, working with the likes Jeru the Damaja, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and KRS-One. Coming back to record their fourth, the group wanted to prove that they were versatile and wanted to show that they could stray from their jazz-sampled sensibilities on their previous album and could rock with a different sound.Heavily involved with the project was the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective that was aligned with the duo that included the likes of Jeru, the hip-hop duo Group Home, Big Shug, Freddie Foxx (Bumpy Knuckles), Afu-Ra among others. The project featured Jeru, both Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker and Big Shug. Unlike Daily Operation, the album was produced under a wider variety of musical influences. The album featured two classic singles: "DWYCK" with hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth (which was supposed to be originally on Daily Operation and "Mass Appeal". The album was critically acclaimed upon release and reestablished Gang Starr as a force within hip-hop. It also served as a forerunner to a number of different albums over the next 18 months that were credited as being pivotal to the New York hip-hop scene being a power center once again in the hip-hop landscape. B. Cox reviews hip-hop duo Gang Starr's fifth album Moment of Truth as it turns 25. After a four year hiatus from their acclaimed 4th album 1994's Hard To Earn, Guru and DJ Premier returned to to the lab to craft their latest album among a changing landscape. Hip-hop, once thought to be a fringe fad when they debuted and when they first left, was now starting to explode commercially and was being sought after beyond the urban communities and into corporate America. In between albums, the two had their share of work and turmoil. Guru recorded another installment of his famed Jazzmatazz series and also faced two different pending legal charges and battled some personal demons, while Premier became a recognized as one of the top producers in the game by producing for multiple acts during the break, but suffered some losses of loved ones during this time as well. The break and the adversity both men during it faced fueled their latest effort; crafting a well balanced and rounded out piece that reflected everything which made Gang Starr one of the best groups of their time. Guru's lyrics and emceeing rose to yet another level with his wisdom and experiences of the past few years driving his narrative to sights not seen before with Premier's beats meeting his mate's effort to a cinematic, with a Premier-type grit that served the soundtrack well. They were joined by a wide variety of featured guests such Inspectah Deck, M.O.P, Scarface, Freddie Fox, Big Shug, Shiggy Sha, a young G-Dep and singers K-Ci and JoJo. The combination led to arguably the group's most candid and complete work to date. The album featured three singles: "You Know My Steez" "Royalty" and "The Militia". Despite with no major charting singles, the album was certified gold and stands as a contender for the crown jewel of the legendary duo's catalog.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Gang Starr's 'Moment of Truth' Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospective https://albumism.com/features/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-album-anniversaryRockTheBells: Gang Starr's 'Moment of Truth' at 25https://rockthebells.com/articles/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-turns-25/Glide Magazine: 25 Years Later: Revisiting Gang Starr's Locked In "Moment of Truth" https://glidemagazine.com/289978/25-years-later-revisiting-gang-starrs-locked-in-moment-of-truth/Ambrosia For Heads: DJ Premier speaks About How Real Moment of Truth was Hip-Hop and Gang Starrhttps://ambrosiaforheads.com/2018/04/gang-starr-moment-of-truth-making-of-interview-video/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ashleigh Blackwell gets the honors for the official official-official one-year anniversary of Badass Records Podcast. That is, some spacing occurred between the recordings and airings of the first two episodes, but -- from the third installment on -- I've managed to get one up per week. This being #52 means a year's worth now lives on the Internet, and -- you know -- that's kinda cool.Anyway, Ashleigh's wise and witty. She's bold and beautiful (Wasn't there a TV show with a similar name?). She's a daughter and a sister and an aunt and a dog lover and a marketplace force, and she's also a great person to know, even if only a little. So, I'm very thankful that she stopped by and rapped music and life with me. Our conversation went a bunch of different directions, and I tip my hat to her for her fearless engagement and rawness from start to finish. Her musical journey fascinated me in that it moved from the comforts of her folks' tuneage to the neighborhood of boy bands, where it stopped only for a hot minute. From there it was on to bigger and badder, and a noteworthy bond with the 1991 Skid Row record, Slave to the Grind, was forever forged. So, please check out our chat. It was a good one.Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are clips taken from a Guru track called, "Transit Ride," which comes from his 1993 release, Jazzmatazz (c/o Virgin Records America, Inc.). This album wasn't -- by any means -- the birthplace of badass records, but it's certainly a stop on the tour. If you're unfamiliar, I highly recommend you familiarize yourself. You won't regret it.

Most importantly, it was the first piece of the puzzle to discover different sounds, from house music with Nuyorican Soul to Acid Jazz with Jamiroquai and Incognito. His trips to London in the late 90s - enjoying the legendary Bar Rumba club nights founded by Gilles Peterson - and the first festival experience at Big Chill- led him to create Jazz:Re:Found. My guest today is Ben Rubin a producer, mixer, bassist, and composer in Brooklyn NY. Whether he's melding hip-hop and jazz with legends like Masta Ace and Donny McCaslin, playing upright bass at the Newport Jazz Festival with Dred Scott Trio, remixing Karsh Kale or WuTang's Killah Priest, rockin' on electric bass with Marshall Crenshaw, or producing Peter Bernstein solo jazz guitar, Grammy-nominated producer/(re)mixer/bassist/composer Ben Rubin (aka Benny Cha Cha) is renowned for making records that are pure or genre-bending or both. Picked seven times as a “Rising Star Producer” in DownBeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll, Rubin has well over 100 album credits to his name. Lately, he has been working with a diversity of artists including Queen Esther, Erik Deutsch & Theo Bleckmann, Steve Conte (New York Dolls), Stripmall Ballads, Rachel Eckroth (St Vincent), Lower Power, Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Drifter feat. Lucy Woodward, Buzzed Armstrong, and Jon Irabagon, as well as labels like Ropeadope, Sunnyside and Imani. Most recently, Rubin's attention has focused on Analog Players Society at the Bridge Studio in Brooklyn with APS founder Amon Drum creating cut-up hip-hop instrumental records and jazz albums released on Ropeadope and described by Downbeat Magazine as “truly compelling.” featuring legendary Juice Crew MC Masta Ace described as “in the direct lineage of classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Low-End Theory, and Guru's Jazzmatazz.” Bens production and mixing credits include Walking Distance feat. Jason Moran, Grammy nominated composer/pianist Emilio Solla, and many recordings for Smalls Live Records releasing more than 30 records with jazz greats including Larry Goldings, Louis Hayes, Tom Harrell, Johnny O'Neal, Chris Potter, Tim Ries, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Seamus Blake, and Cyrille Aimeé to name just a few. As a bassist, Ben has toured and recorded both upright and electric bass with a diversity of artists, including Dred Scott Trio, Patti Smith, James Maddock, Courtney Love, Mary J. Blige, Moby, Bill Frisell, and his own acclaimed, genre-bending band Mudville which I believe my brother Nate played in at one point. Ben has also composed scores for features and short films, including director Nelson Kim's feature film debut, Someone Else, which premiered at the Miami International Film Festival in 2015. This week's show covers new music from an LA and NYC combo, of American Dance Ghosts and Baltra, a new dance banger from NYC's Doss, a lounge-y new track from Austin's Flyjack and London's Scrimshire, and some new indie rock from Philly's The Districts. For the archive pick this week, Mark is heading back to 1995, and to the second volume in the late rapper Guru's Jazzmatazz series. This is the sort of jazz-infused rap that Guru and Gang Starr before Guru went solo were known for, which got an upgrade from Guru's connection to Blue Note Records and their treasure chest of hard bop and fusion styles from the mid-1950s to the 1980s, before the reissue boom reanimated the label in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link.  (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. In Episode 74, we were joined by talented rapper, producer, visual artist, and rolling paper creator, Lync Lone. Lync first discussed the aspirational aspects of Lync's music, and how being a rapper was his dream since day 1 (2:07). The key influences that helped Lync develop his style (2:58). Lync talks about how his distinctly cool and chill rapping style developed over the years (12:13). Lync details how he maintains such a positive outlook on life, and why he finds it important to promote that perspective in his music (17:18). Hear the hilariously natural way Lync and BLOODBLIXING created Decibelz, one of my personal favourite Lync project (25:40). Lync discusses his Iceberg Theory collaboration in Acid Jazz, and how Guru's Jazzmatazz inspired that project (31:33). Visuel © Le bien, le mal de Guru et Mc Solaar See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

His passion for music has taken him across the globe, from Glastonbury Festival, to nightclubs in Cape Town, and even Finnish jazz clubs – he has played toe to toe with some of the industry's finest: Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Bonobo, Candi Station, Guru & Jazzmatazz, Tony Allen, Roy Ayers, Quantic Soul Orchestra to name but a few. Yet, he will always be most appreciated for his influence in the local scene, his Samedia Shebeen events are a solid staple of the Edinburgh nightlife, while his involvement with Kelburn Garden Party and the wee DUB festival provides some of the standout dates in the Scottish music calendar for the lucky punters who are able to attend. This episode of Bside is already one of our favourites, the mix perfectly encapsulates the concept of our podcast series. Astrojazz will take you on a journey through his collection whilst telling the tale behind each record. A nostalgia fuelled transmission of his all time favourite Bsides, a rough around the edges reminiscence of his favourite parties, and an insight into the musical journey that brought him to where he is now. David Bowie is one of my biggest influences both as a vocalist and a visionary. His artistry is unparalleled. An inventor with such unique gifts that found a way with every album to find a new voice and direction. If you listened to this show you know Bowie often graced the playlist. As musicians we owe so much to this man. There is no one song that I could play that could sum up his genius. Not one album from his first to last that didn't display his vocal and lyrical prowess. For me "Space Oddity" seems like an appropriate start for this heavenly journey. We have a new feature on Bombshell Radio. A weekly music chart and currently at the number one spot the late great Syd Barrett one of the founding members of Pink Floyd who would've turned 70 last week. I'll be posting a chart this coming Friday and watching our social feeds. The chart mostly reflects music from the Addictions Inbox and another way for us to promote the songs that are getting such great feedback and deserve you're attention. It's been a great weekend on Bombshell Radio I caught a few waves with Jazzmatazz last show ,all surf music. Heard some amazing new artists on Unsigned Project. I can promise you some if not all will be added to the Addictions lineup. Tonight a lot of new entries from around the globe, a few favourites and as always a few surprises. This is Addictions and Other Vices 225 - Days Like These!!!I Hope You Enjoy.

A guest selection from SNO - here's her story: When I grew up in the township of Bophelong in the Vaal, South Africa, my uncle was the finest collector of Jazz, Soul, Afrobeat and Disco. He suffocated me with tune after tune for years. When he sold his collection, I felt loss that I still haven’t felt to date. Once I managed to get a proper turntable at home this year, I started collecting the very records my uncle sold, and more, as I have never stopped to learn about music. On the 17th July, I was thrown in the lion's den by my brother and homie Levi Love, when I covered his 4 hour set at Soup Kitchen, Manchester. STREAM or DOWNLOAD On this explosive threat level, Mista Montana and Menace do this: Duck Down Records' Statik Selektah discusses his new album "What Comes Around", breaking down the inspiration and creation behind such tracks as "Alarm Clock", The Thrill Is Gone", "Drunk & High", working with Snoop Dogg and being inspired by the late great Guru's "Jazzmatazz". He also details his future, of which will see upcoming work and projects with Ransom, Joey Badass, another "24-hour period" project with Freddie Gibbs, a Scarface collaboration, which he confirms Face has already written and more! Diabolic returns to the show to talk his September slated release "Fighting Words", his initial scepticism in launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund its release and how its recording was an organic process. We discuss maintaining creative independence and freedom, working with RA the Rugged Man, Celph Titled and the DJ Premier laced "Diabolical", which we were proud to play first, who he would want to Battle today and more. Will Diabolic work with Immortal Technique again? Listen and find out. Chris Rivers takes to Conspiracy Worldwide Radio to detail his transition from Baby Pun to Chris Rivers in a brief but illuminating introduction to the son of Big Pun. We talk growing as an artist within recent years, finding difficult to balance integrity with sales, his hopes and goals for his upcoming debut album, working with Styles P and Vinnie Paz, the possibility of collaborating with his father via unreleased verses in the future and more. The OG that is Buckshot joins us to discuss his collaborative album with New Zealand based producer P. Money "Backpack Travels", working with KRS ONE, both present and future projects at Duckdown Records, his feelings and thoughts on the aftermath of the August 9th police shooting of Michael Brown, his shoe-line Triple Threat, performing in the UK and more. Dan The Automator makes his debut appearance on the show to explore his latest album with actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and reflect over some of his most career defining records to date. We talk recording Kool Keith's "Dr. Octagonecologyst", working with Prince Paul as part of Handsome Boy Modelling School, El-P being mad over their collaboration "Megaton B-Boy 2000", producing Black Rob's first ever on wax appearance "The Smootheness", Deltron 3030, the formulation of The Gorillaz, his relationship with Director Edgar Wright and so much more! Long time journalist Angus Batey takes time out his schedule to share his memories spent working freelance for British publication Hip Hop Connection (HHC). We also discuss his current grind writing for NME and the national morning newspaper The Guardian, his freedom at The Guardian and freedom The Guardian has to cover music, feeling too old to review albums by artists younger than him, NOT being fond of Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" when it was first released, HHC's Editor Andy Cohen once inviting football stars Andy Cole and Kevin Campbell to meet Wu-Tang Clan, Pitchfork, making money from journalism and the future of income in independent journalism and more! Will Angus remain true to his word and check out 2 publications Menace writes for Wordplay and The Hardcopy?! We say HE BETTER. AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Mista Montana and Menace discuss the tragic shooting of Michael Brown, the false flag terror threat that the UK government is selling to us all and a lot more. ENJOY THIS! Firstly I would like to say a big thanks to Millennium Jazz, The Jazz Jousters and Gadget for doing me the honour of inviting me to do this as part of their Millennium Jazz Podcast series at www.mixcloud.com/MillenniumJazz . I would also like to pay my respect to all past and present Jazz musicians and producers. I found it really hard to put this set together and made about 3 different sets before I settled on this one. I guess as I am predominantly a funk and soul dj, that started by spinning hip hop, that these elements are very strong in my track selection and in fact much of my love for jazz stemmed from hearing funky jazz, soul jazz and hip hop based on Jazz samples. I was also strongly influenced by the Acid Jazz movement in the early 90's and the Rebirth of Cool and Jazzmatazz releases in the 90's. All this led me to delve deeper into Jazz and hence my session nears the end with some of the masters, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis before going out with a bang with the Jazz Juice track 'The Kicker', which reminds me of the Knotting Hill Carnival Jungle stages and demonstrates quite clearly how Jazz has pervaded all genres of music.
