Some great titles in physical media this week and Erik Childress is joined by Peter Sobczynski to convince you to pick them up. They include a great modern con artist noir from Criterion and a lost film from Paul Bartel. The ‘70s bring us some sexploitation horror and Sherlock Holmes hunts Jack the Ripper while the '80s gave us one of the most unique and divisive slasher films. Peter goes to bat for a pair of 4K upgrades from John Carpenter and Tarsem. Finally, there is a trio of new 4Ks from Quentin Tarantino that includes one of Peter's favorite films and one of Erik's favorite music cues. 0:00 - Intro 2:16 – Criterion (The Grifters 4K) 15:30 - Liberation Hall (Shelf Life) 26:29 - Kino (Fade-In, Invasion of the Bee Girls, Murder by Decree 4K, April Fool's Day 4K) 58:57 - Shout Factory (John Carpenter's Vampires 4K) 1:06:57 - Arrow (The Cell 4K) 1:19:45 - Lionsgate (Jackie Brown 4K, Kill Bill Vol. 1 4K, Kill Bill Vol 2 4K) 1:39:44 - New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Here, The Return, Rumours, Smile 2, The Substance, Venom: The Last Dance) 1:44:00 – New Blu-ray Announcements

A film 28 years in the making and shot across 24 countries, Tarsem's gonzo masterpiece The Fall has long been woefully unavailable. The 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival saw a new 4K restoration, done in collaboration with MUBI, premiere on the 8,000-seat Piazza Grande in Locarno. For this episode of our podcast Locarno Meets, Tarsem sat down for an in-depth discussion of this great UFO of film history, telling the epic story of its making, of the reasons for its long-time unavailability, of how it was rejected by studios and critics but revered as a cult classic by fans, and how seeing it on the big screen at the Locarno Film Festival is the best kind of validation.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh joins Kiriko to reflect on The Fall (2006), once dubbed by the filmmaker himself as “the most expensive passion project” until Megalopolis. A film nearly derailed by Harvey Weinstein, The Fall has since been reclaimed by a dedicated fanbase, championed by figures like Roger Ebert. Now with a stunning 4K restoration, this cult classic is ripe for rediscovery—an ode to the enduring power of storytelling. Seventeen years in the making, spanning 27 countries, the film captures breathtaking beauty—both human and natural—in a visual tapestry unlike any other. Tarsem shares the challenges of realizing such an ambitious project, from shooting in remote, inaccessible locations to the personal motivation behind this pursuit. The director Tarsem Singh first made a name for himself in the ‘90s making iconic music videos for bands like R.E.M. and Dream Warriors. In 2000, he captured moviegoers' imaginations with the sci-fi thriller, “The Cell,” starring Jennifer Lopez. His latest movie, “Dear Jassi,” is based on the real-life story of Jassi Sidhu, a young Sikh woman from Vancouver who was kidnapped and murdered while visiting the man she secretly married against the wishes of her family. Tarsem sits down with Tom to talk about this tragic love story, and why it was also pretty personal to him.

“You have to see this.” That's the message I see alongside a link sent to me by a friend. “Umm… I'm kind of busy, you know? I'm in the middle of things, working and I don't have time for links.” I fire back. He insists, “No, you really need to see this.” So I open up the link and see... an inkblot. An inkblot?!? Big deal! Then he tells me to play the video, and I do. I find myself completely enthralled as this inkblot suddenly becomes a creature that turns into an adorable monster. Oh, and the artist creating it is drawing it upside-down and backward! From white pages to inkblots to monsters, this art comes to life before my eyes. And each monster clearly has its own story behind it. I have to know who the artist is. I want to talk to him and find out everything I can because anyone with the talent to turn inkblots into monsters has won me over. How do you organically create something from nothing like that? Find out in this episode as I sit down with that incredible artist, Stefan G. Bucher. We discuss why starting your story in the middle helps you overcome resistance and why doing things for yourself without an audience might be the better way for you to go. You'll also hear about the role of storytelling in highlighting the common experience, how you can do things to feel less alone in the world, and Stefan's incredibly amusing technique to help you uplevel your storytelling game. What you will learn in this episode: Why your task is to find something, not create something Why connection is such an essential part of great storytelling How different mediums can unlock new ways to approach storytelling Who is Stefan? Stefan G. Bucher is a writer, graphic designer, illustrator, and all-around bookaholic. Born in Germany, he came to California and studied at the Art Center College of Design. His first introduction to book design happened as a child when he poured over the catalogs of the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hannover. That early access began a lifelong journey to design and produce books in the same delightful and fascinating fashion that those early catalogs did for him. Stefan has received rewards, features, and recognition from design books and magazines and prestigious institutions in the literary world. He won the Yellow Pencil Award for Book Design from British Design and the Art Direction and the Art Directors Club of New York. Numerous book design exhibitions have featured his work such as those hosted by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Minneapolis' Walker Art Center, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Stefan's most popular work, however, is the online animation series Daily Monster where he filmed himself drawing a new monster from random inkblots for 100 days. This series has enjoyed millions of views and downloads and inclusion in the Communication Arts Illustration and American Illustration annuals, and even new life in book form. In addition, he has worked with a wide range of entertainment, advertising, educational, and institutional clients and collaborated on projects with big names like Sting, director Tarsem, and The New York Times. Judy Jean Kwon grew up in a Korean-American video store where she fell in love with the art of filmmaking and story-telling. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she is a daughter of Korean immigrants. She split her time between Korea and America as a child and turned to the music and the arts. She started acting when she was 17. After 5 years of acting training, she went on to a successful commercial career, breaking the mold for Asian-American actors by taking on non-stereotypical roles. One of her first jobs was with Tarsem in the famous "Philip's flat TV" commercial where she proudly beat out over 300 Caucasian actors and landed the lead. She broke doors for ethnic actors and competed against non-Asian actresses. Unusual and uniquely beautiful, she went on to model for Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, and acted in over 100 commercials. She played the lead in one of the first digital feature film to screen at Sundance Film Festival - "The Item".Kwon participated in the ABC's director fellowship, studied cinema at LACC, photography at Santa Monica College, and writing at UCLA.Kwon's mission is to give voice to the voiceless and tell stories of the underdogs that are ignored. She is passionate about women's rights and immigrant's stories.http://yomamarice.comDr. Donna MarksAmerica is addicted to… being addicted. And during the pandemic, COVID has accelerated the addictive mindset. Too many of us abuse one or more things, whether it is smoking cigarettes, vaping, having sex, drugging, drinking, eating, gambling, shopping or any of a dozen or more unhealthy and sometimes life-threatening, possibly illegal, career-ending, family-damaging habits. We are caught in a maze, like a lab rat. It is time to Exit The Maze, according to a breakthrough book by a former addict (marijuana, alcohol, and nicotine) who, as a mental health counselor, has successfully treated over 6,000 patients during the past three decades. She has found what has proven to work in treating addiction. “Addiction behavior operates like a hungry mouse looking for cheese in a maze,” says Dr. Marks, based in South Florida. “The mouse frantically runs through the maze in all different directions looking for the cheese. The mouse doesn't care about the amount, the shape of the cheese, or its flavor. No matter what, it will race up and down the maze searching. Even if the mouse is shocked with electric current every time it eats the cheese, it may be traumatized, but presented with the opportunity, the mouse will still go after the cheese. Obsessed with getting the cheese, the mouse never seeks the exit out of the maze. A person caught in the maze of addiction is similar to the mouse in that the addict will continue to seek out the "cheese" (a metaphor for any addictive substance or behavior) in spite of negative feedback, no matter how punishing it becomes. Like the mouse looking for cheese, the addicted person will continue to run the maze, frantically searching for the next "reward" or fix. This has become a massive social problem.”http://drdonnamarks.comThe Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. In their fifth bonus episode, Robert and Jason revisit a terrifying movie from Jason's childhood: Tarsem Singh's psychological thriller THE CELL. Don't ask us why Jason was watching something this creepy at 12 years old! We start off by discussing Robert's previous disappointment with Tarsem's IMMORTALS, and then move into THE CELL's crazy but time-tested visual effects and the central performances from Jennifer Lopez, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Vince Vaughn. Should Tarsem get some Netflix or Amazon money to make up for the terrible direct-to-DVD sequel? Theme music: "Downtown" by Podington Bear. [CC BY-NC 3.0]

The string of Sneople Origin Movies continues in this week's episode, covering Tarsem's 2006 cult classic, The Fall! This is also the most cursed episode yet, as it took them three tries to actually make -- It was worth the wait, they promise. They heap praise upon Lee Pace (both for his acting ability and his height), rage against the unfair reviewers that put The Fall on limited release, and just in general talk a lot about stories and how they heal and hurt us. Matty and Ezra also get really excited about costuming again. This episode also features a wide variety of Unusual Double Features, ranging from movies like It's a Wonderful Life to Maurice. It's a complex film and they refuse to apologize.

Tarsem Singh is part of that first generation of filmmakers who cut their teeth making music videos for MTV before making the transition to the silver screen.  His more prolific counterparts include Spike Jonze ("Her") and David Fincher ("Gone Girl"), both of whom helped "The Fall" get released in theaters.  Tarsem's labor of love took four years to make, and was filmed in 28 countries.  The film is a story within a story, and is really about celebrating the intimacy between story and storyteller.  "The Fall" is a highly imaginative film from one of the most visionary directors of this era, who is such despite only having made a handful of films.  He would be in that category anyway, if he had made no other film than this one.  Emily is the guest in this episode and the three movie fans discuss her listener's choice.
