So here it is, after many, many years of not having a copy of the first mixtape (yes, as in cassette tape!) I ever recorded, some friends came through for me. My Umoja Hi Fi compadre DJ Aaron Paar takes a trip to NYC this year and links with Tracy Levenstein who pulls out an O.G. copy and I was blessed enough for Tracy to lend it to me. So what'd I do?, I digitized it. This is a 100% vinyl mix recorded to 1/2 tape. The influence of this mix is ATCQ, Black Moon, and Dr. Dre respectively. It's also heavily influenced by the London rare groove scene and my love of discovering breaks and soul music that laid the foundation for hip hop. Here's the tracklisting... 1. James Brown - Popcorn With A Feeling.2. Al Green - I'm So Glad You're Mine3. The Isley Brothers - Between The Sheets4. Roy Ayers - Searching5. Juicy - Sugar Free6. Patrice Rushen - Remind Me7. Being a follower and lover of music I always find the music that inspires me is the music that goes deeper into the soul, music that has a bigger sound and a conscious message behind it, created by people who choose to push their limits further and display the very talents that brings them back 360˚ to the understanding that we are human. It just so happens some of them can sing better than us. Lot's of strong vocals on here and some great rhythms too. I know this is probably not the trendiest mix I ever done but these songs have been in the back of my mind for many years and yet there are still recognizable hip hop samples as used by J Dilla, The Pharcyde, ATCQ, and Stetsasonic. Peace and blessings!

Shout out to Santana and the whole Truthseekers crew.Mixed and recorded live (no edits, no over-dubs, no pro-tools, recorded in one take) by dj dAz for Sounds Of Umoja productions. The music in this mix has been rolling around in my head for many months, even years, and possibly decades. The ability to understand the similarities between jazz of the past and modern hip hop has always been something to drive my art. Even in my early days as a young yout', jazz music was always playing in my house, classic movies were always on the t.v., and whenever I'd get home from school, there would always be an energy of welcomeness and calm like you had arrived. As I grew up and started to become influenced by hip hop in the eighties and nineties it just became a natural progression to be influenced by the very hip hop artists that used samples from their pop's record collection for their own sound. Dad listened to Oscar Peterson, I listened to A Tribe Called Quest. Dad listened to Cab Calloway, I listened to Big Daddy Kane. So, with that being said; Big Up Pop's, Mom's, and family. I dedicate this to everyone, but my influences for this mix comes from the movies “The Jungle Book”, and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's “Road To Zanzibar”, as well as the very artists who are featured in this mix. Bless Up!

I Was Invited To Spin A Weekly Early Set At BRASS (L.A.'s First Acid Jazz Club) By The Clubs Creators; DJ Marques Wyatt, EMC=O, And Paul Stewart… Every Sunday Night For About 3 Years, BRASS Became At That Time, The Place To See And Be Seen In The Los Angeles Music Scene… As I Would Spin My Early Set Of Jazz, Soul, Rare Grooves, And Native Tongue-esque Hip Hop I Would See In The Crowd, The Likes Of Mike Tyson, Queen Latifah, Tony, Toni, Tone, Fishbone, MC Jamalski, And Various Other Movers And Shakers Getting Down To The Sounds Of dj dAz, Marques, EMC=O, and Paul Stewart a.k.a. DJ P. BRASS (As A Crew) Were Directly Responsible For the Signing, Marketing, And Development Of The Brand New Heavies, The Pharcyde, And Masta Ace, Inc To Delicious Vinyl Records, Helping To See These Artists Careers Blossom Into Fruition…. DJ J-Rocc Of The Beat Junkies/Stones Throw Records Asked Me A Few Years Back If I Would Be Interested In Doing a Brass Event With Him Involved… Sorry J, I Slept On That One. Holla Back, And Lets Get Sump'n Goin'.The Sounds You Are Hearing Now Are A Reflection Of What I Used To Spin During Those Days… I Would Mos' Def' Like To Shout Out Marques Wyatt, EMC=O, Paul Stewart, Delicious Vinyl Records, Nate Scott, Lano Brazil, Cid Hernandez of the soulpeople, the Cahuenga Posse (you know who you are)… the Village Idiots, Giant Step NYC, and everyone else who was there… Good Times, Seen! And Oh Yeah… When We Would Dig For Records Back Then, We'd Cover The Labels Up So No Biters Could Catch A Glimpse Of What We Were Playing… So For This Pod-Cast I Will Not Be Posting A Play List… But Holla At'cha Boy And Leave A Comment To Let A Brother Know Y'all Are Listening, And I Might Be So Gracious As To Send You The Track List….
