An interview with Jason Schlarb after his third-place finish at the 2024 Hardrock 100.
About Lucas: I was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis, causing my left arm to remain underdeveloped and fused at the joints. The cause of this condition is debated and largely unknown. I consider myself very fortunate as it typically affects more than one limb. I was also fortunate to have parents who did not treat me any differently than anyone else and pushed me to not let my arm hold me back. Growing up I mostly did what people told me I couldn't or shouldn't be doing. I played basketball from the time I was young though high school, making the varsity team my junior and senior years. It was my first love and a way I could seek solace, challenge myself, and learn how to be a part of a team. I found a love for running in middle school and joined the cross country team. In college I ran a 200 mile relay race with some friends and loved it. I have since run the Leadville 100 mile race twice, in 2019 as part of the Leadman series. The most daunting race of the 5 in the Leadman series was the 100 mile mountain bike race because I only use one hand on the handlebars and do not have a prosthetic for my left. I was able to complete the race in time with my hand so numb that I couldn't shift gears. I was stoked. I have since completed the Smoke N Fire 400 mile self-supported bikepacking race twice, becoming the first to do so as an individual with a disability. Mountainous terrain is where I find the most joy. In my new backyard of the Tetons I've completed the ‘Teton Picnic' a couple of times and spend a lot of time biking around and running up various mountains. I am currently training under coach, Jason Schlarb, to become a better mountain runner and endurance ski mountaineer. With his coaching I completed the Restonica 70K and the OCC 50K this past summer, setting a PR at the 50k distance. During my time in Chamonix I was also able to advocate for adaptive athletes by speaking directly with the Admissions Manager for UTMB. I am currently on a team of adaptive athletes with a goal of traveling from the lowest point to the highest point in elevation on every continent completely human powered. We completed South America early 2020. We also started the nonprofit called LowestHighest in which we are raising funds to help serve those with disabilities in the areas we will be traveling through. For example, providing a proper fitting prosthetic to someone who doesn't have access to one. I love to push myself to my perceived limits and push through them while exploring the great outdoor world and advocating for those in the disabled community. This journey is another way to do just that! accomplishments: Co-created the nonprofit LowestHighest Foundation. We have completed South America so far, biking roughly 2000 miles from Laguna Del Carbon to Aconcagua, ditching the bikes, and climbing Aconcagua Was an athlete on the inaugural SCARPA athlete mentorship initiative Came in 26th place, 10th in my age group, in the RUT mountain race in Montana (out of 500+ racers) and was the only competitor with a physical disability Sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation Ran the Leadville 100 mile footrace twice Completed the Leadman Series (trail marathon, 50 mile run, 100 mile mtb race, 10k run, 100 mile footrace) all in one summer Only person to complete the Leadville 100 mile mtb race with one arm on the handlebars (I do not use a bike prosthetic) Completed the Smoke N' Fire 400 mile self supported bike-packing race twice and was the first to complete this with a disability. In 2021 two others with disabilities completed it with me! This was sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation Have completed the Teton ‘Picnic' Triathlon twice and am the only person to do it with a disability (22 mile bike, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile run/rock climb with 7500 ft of vert up the Grand Teton, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile bike Bike and Build 2016 rode my bike across the country from Virginia to Oregon building homes with Habitat for Humanity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whothewyldthingsare/support

Today we are honoured to host Jason Schlarb as a guest on the show. He is a champion professional trail ultrarunner, coach, military veteran, and proud father. Jason's most notable achievements include winning the Hardrock 100 and Run Rabbit Run as well as finishing as the top American in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (4th place, 2014). Jason has had a long and colourful professional running career, filled with adventures all over the globe where he seeks out big mountains in remote regions. In February of 2021, Jason tore his ACL and meniscus while alpine skiing, an event that presented a very different kind of challenge. In this episode we talk about how his relationship with running has changed, and also what has remained consistent over the years. We discuss his recovery and return to running post-surgery, and what the experience taught him. Finally, we discuss Jason's plans to return to UTMB in August with the goal of becoming the first American to win the event. Enjoy an introduction to the cast of characters behind the Run Beyond experience. Jason Brooks, Mallory Brooks, and Jason Schlarb share insights into who they are as humans tell fun stories from their experience as ultrarunners, coaches, and race directors and, through the process, provide a little insight into what the Run Beyond community is.
Jason Schalrb is an ultrarunner from Durango, CO. He's been a friend and fellow competitor for many years. Jason recently won the IMTUF 100 miler in Idaho, which initially motivated this discussion. While we do talk about that in some detail, the bulk of the conversation confronts the human side of the sport. Jason shares some recent struggles he's dealt with, how he processed them, and how the experience made him a better person. We also talk about aging as an athlete and how to stay at our best through that process. Welcome to Episode 13 of the Wildcast This episode was recorded in May and I talk to Mary Anne Potts and Ben Clark from Ben's ancestral home in Tennessee. Mary Anne is of course the former editor of National Geographic Adventure and with a real wealth in experience covering adventure and outdoor stories over the last 20 years her insight into the adventure space and the changes that have happened in the last 20 years is seen from the eye of a journalist watching some of the best outdoor athletes and some of the biggest adventures the world has seen in the last 2 decades. Ben is a film maker and an accomplished outdoorsman he was the second youngest person to summit Everest many years ago and is now known for his trail running films like the Snowman Trek where they ran through 300 kilometers of Himalayan Mountains in Bhutan with Anna Frost and Timothy Olson, he also produces Run around the World a trail running series with Jason Schlarb and Meredith Edwards. They share with me their flight from New York and how they see outdoor and adventure evolving post pandemic and what we can all look forward to in the adventure space in the coming months and years. An incredibly insightful conversation with both of them who I can say each bring a different perspective to the experience of the outdoors -they are very much alike but also very unique in what they bring to the outdoor and adventure space and i truly enjoyed picking their brains in this fruitful conversation. Very honest and insightful descriptions of what it takes to survive and thrive in the biggest events, from two of the best! "100 miles is really hard, it’s a long way - we’re not running for our lives; it’s something we choose to do. So what can we learn, how do we get through the dark places?" "I hate it too - but it's a soul-searcher - but you need it in your life." "FKTs are more personal; they are more likely to be for the right reasons." "Sometimes you can lose sight of why you race, but when it's your own personal FKT, if you're not really passionate about it, you won't even make it to the start." This fun interview closes with advice on the coolest new places to go - China, Italy, Oman, South America, New Zealand. "It's an opportunity to be really free." *Interview Recorded at Outdoor Retailer*

Last week's guest Thanks to last week's guest, professional cyclist Jillian Bearden for candidly sharing her story about her journey through the pro cycling ranks, through her transition and trail blazing work with the International Olympic Committee and USA Cycling. We received some great feedback. If you haven't heard the interview yet, go back and check it out on episode #104. I did have a fact brought to my attention that Michelle Dumaresq is a Canadian professional downhill mountain bike competitor and post-operative trans woman. She competes with other professional female downhill mountain bike racers and raced downhill as a pro in 2002. It's hard to be sure, but that would make Michelle a pro cyclist some years before Jillian. That said, if you simply type into Google "who is the first pro transgender cyclist?", my browser spits back Jillian Bearden - perhaps from my search history - perhaps the assumption is road cycling. Regardless, Jillian is clearly the athlete who blazed the trail with IOC and USAC. Great courage by Jillian! Can't wait to see her race in 2018. Thanks to our listeners for staying engaged and keeping information coming our way. We want to make sure we have our facts straight and share additional perspectives or angles to our stories. Discussion Teasers After the interview we are going to talk about the power of smiling when going to the pain cave or when the going gets tough in endurance racing or training. We also have a discussion on other activities that you can do in the off season to develop your gluteus medius, including rollerblading and skate skiing. Interview Setup Travis Macy summited glacial peaks in the French Alps, rappelled into vast limestone caves in China, and ran through parched deserts in Utah. Most famously, he won one of the country's marquee ultra-distance events: Leadman, a high-altitude series of super-long-distance races, culminating with a 100-mile mountain biking race and a 100-mile trail run. Macy accomplished it without exceptional strength, speed, or flexibility, and without high-tech performance labs or performance-enhancing drugs. His secret? A precise and particular outlook he calls the "Ultra Mindset," principles for daily life that are neither mysterious nor the sole province of ascetics or elite athletes: embrace fear, rewrite stories we tell ourselves, and master the art of seeking help, among others. By applying the principles such as "It's All Good Mental Training," "When you have no choice, anything is possible," and "Never quit...except when you should quit" to other areas of life, anyone can find success that otherwise would have seemed impossible. We're going to get into the interview right now with Travis Macy. Interview Travis Macy Health IQ Ad And we are back. Thanks again to Health IQ for sponsoring today's interview. The Health IQ advantage is their unique mortality model that enables lower rates for health conscious people. Just like having a good driving record saves you money on auto insurance, Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more. With other life insurance companies, you might be penalized for family history, BMI, and other attributes but don't get rewarded for your health conscious lifestyle. You put in the time to train consistently, have the discipline to get out there in the cold, in the dark, you eat well, and you get the rewards of greater energy, and you feel good about yourself. Let's face it, you spend money on race registrations, gym memberships and gear. See if you can reward yourself further and recoup some of those investments. See how much you can save. To see if you qualify, get your free quote today at healthiq.com/milehigh or mention the promo code Mile High when you talk to a Health IQ agent. Host Discussion Topics Travis Macy reflections: First of all - Travis is a complete bad ass. Not only has he competed is some of the toughest, most epic, endurance races - he's been at the top of the sport and competed on some of the top teams. I didn't know much about adventure racing before reading this book, but man these races sound like a bitch to plan and pack for let alone race. This leads into my topic, which is about the power of smiling when training hard or when you hit a rough patch. I subscribe to Travis Macy's Ultra Mindset newsletter and I saw one of his recent guests was Jason Schlarb who is one of the best ultra-runners in the world. One of the things they talk about in their interview, which you can check out on YouTube, is about the power of smiling when you hit a rough patch. The Ultra Mindset with Jason Schlarb There are also some excellent articles, including: https://www.outsideonline.com/2256666/smiling-makes-you-more-efficient-runner https://www.topdowndental.com/3-reasons-why-you-should-smile-when-youre-running/ https://www.active.com/running/articles/6-tips-to-push-past-the-pain And in the book "The Sports Gene" they talked about the shared neural network in the brain between pain centers and emotion centers. An interview with Jason Schlarb before the 2017 Hardrock 100.
We bring you audio from The Coastal Challenge with Sondre Amdahl, Jason Schlarb, Anna Comet and an in-depth chat with Cherie Soria, Dan Ladermann and 'Coastal' the dog. We also talk with UK based fell and mountain runner, Jim Mann.
There's so much I could write about as I attempt to describe Jason Schlarb in a few short paragraphs. He's a professional runner, Altra sponsored athlete, world traveler, family man, and an all around good dude. He's ran (and won) an insane amount of trail races all around the world, he's explored mountains, beaches, jungles, and deserts, and was the first American to finish UTMB in 2014 (the Super Bowl of Ultrarunning), amongst so much more! The dude is legitimately one of the best ultra runners on the planet! Best of all he's a Coloradoan who, like most people who live here, loves being outdoors and exploring the wilderness. Running, hiking, climbing, or skiing, he's a badass mountain athlete through and through. In this episode we nerded out about Colorado before discussing one of the state's craziest and most intense races- the Hardrock 100, a race Jason won in 2016 as he finished alongside ultra running superstar Kilian Jornet....you know...the dude who's trying to set the fastest known time up Everest. Hardrock is a special race through Jason's backyard in the San Juan mountains, the area widely known as the most scenic part of Colorado. It's a race designed by tough people FOR tough people and always breeds the quirkiest, most epic stories of grit, endurance, and badassery that comes with enduring one of the toughest 100 mile races in the world. I've been geeking out over Hardrock every since I first read about it in Born to Run, so I was stoked for the opportunity to chat with someone who not only ran it, but WON the whole freaking thing! Oh yeah....Jason was also part of a three man team who became the first to traverse the entire course in the WINTER, which you can see in the documentary posted below and also on our Facebook group. Hope you enjoy the episode half as much as I enjoyed recording it!! If you find some wisdom through the amazingness that is Jason Schlarb, help us out by sharing it with your buddies, checking out our other episodes, or subscribing to our show on iTunes. Thanks again to Jason! Good luck at Hardrock this summer! I'll be there cheering you on, in awe of all the crazy hardrockers!!
Jason Schlarb is a champion ultrarunner whose notable achievements include winning the Hardrock 100 (2016) and Run Rabbit Run 100 (2013 & 2015), as well as finishing as the top American in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (4th place, 2014). He is also an accomplished adventurer who, among other things, has skied the entire Hardrock 100 course in winter and explored remote regions of Patagonia and New Zealand, all while filming his exploits and then creating engaging, authentic films though his company Schlarb-Wolf Productions. Most impressively, Jason is a veteran who served for 10 years as an officer in the United States Air Force, which included a five-month deployment to Iraq and his earning the rank of Major. • A competitive soccer player for most of his youth, Jason made the switch to running relatively late in the game when he joined the cross country team as a high school senior. But his natural talent for endurance combined with a relentless competitive streak allowed him to walk on to a Division I cross country team, where he excelled throughout his college career. After years of focusing exclusively on road races ranging from 10Ks to marathons, he made the switch to trail running and has never looked back. Jason, his wife Maggie, and son Felix have shaped their lives around the pursuit of a purpose-driven, rewarding, and adventurous lifestyle, and they currently reside on the southern end of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, just outside of Durango. • Jason is a fascinating guy with an infectiously positive attitude, which made for a fun and in-depth conversation. We cover a broad range of topics, including his athletic background, his journey to ultrarunning, and some of his adventures around the world. We discuss his time in the military and how those 10 years of service affect his outlook and approach to sports and life. We chat about his thoughts on competition, mental toughness, and the benefits of positive thinking. Whether you’re an athlete or not, there are huge amounts of wisdom to be gleaned from Jason’s experiences and perspective. • This was a fun conversation and I really appreciate Jason taking the time to chat.
