This week, regular guest host and Dementia Researcher blogger Dr Anna Volkmer talks with representatives from the World Health Organisation, to learn about the brilliant new Global Dementia Observatory (GDO) Knowledge Exchange Platform. Listen to hear how researchers can contribute, and how the service is already making a difference. -- This week's guests are the courageous Jim Mann and the incredible Laura Garcia Diaz. Jim lives in British Columbia, he is a Researcher, Author, and Volunteer Living with Alzheimer's. Has an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his effort on “countering negative stereotypes and promoting an inclusive society in which persons with dementia can make an active and meaningful contribution.” Jim was diagnosed in 2007 at the age of 58, and he has contributed to the project in a variety of ways. Laura supports management of the Knowledge Exchange Platform. She has five years of experience in knowledge translation and mobilisation in the area of dementia, having previously worked for the Alzheimer Society of Canada supporting the developing and dissemination of dementia resources. In addition to consulting for the WHO Laura is in the fourth year of a dual degree program at McMaster University, Canada, in which she is completing a Master of Science Occupational Therapy and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences degrees in concurrently. Her research focuses on the evaluation of a Canadian dementia-inclusive community initiative. -- The Global Dementia Observatory (GDO) Knowledge Exchange Platform, also known as the GDO KE Platform, is a resource hub that facilitates the implementation of the Global action plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-2025. It offers various resources, such as policies, guidelines, case studies, and examples of good practices, which are freely available for stakeholders to share and learn from. Users can submit resources, which are then filtered based on strategic action areas, country-specific information, and resource types. A rigorous review process, involving peer reviewers, a Focus Group of individuals with lived experience of dementia, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Secretariat, ensures the quality and adherence to good practice criteria. Users can leave comments and ratings to foster discussion and improvement. The GDO KE Platform works alongside the GDO data portal, which gathers and disseminates data from Member States on 35 key dementia indicators, aiding evidence-based service planning and policy strengthening. In this episode, we have Jim Mann CEO and Founder of UNDO, alongside Matthew Meredith Director of Technology at UNDO. UNDO develops pioneering carbon removal that can capture huge amounts of CO2 from our atmosphere. Their nature-based technologies lock away carbon permanently and start immediately. In the episode, we dive into how tech plays a part in UNDOs carbon removal process and why their business is so integral to the future of climate change. Jim and Mat then share some of the challenges that they've faced building something as important as UNDO with the guard-rails of a start-up. Finally, the pair cover how they get customs to really care about the mission, where their money goes and how they are making a difference, as well as other challenges they face as a climate tech business, such as climate deniers, lack of understanding and ultimately how they remain optimistic. Questions asked: Tell us a bit about yourself and the story behind UNDOCan you talk us through where tech comes into the business? Can you talk us through the mission of the business and why that's its so important to you?How have you found building something as important as UNDO within the guard-rails of a start-up? What have the challenges been? You mentioned previously that the carbon credit offsetting industry is very diverse and unregulated, but also quite misunderstood. Has this presented any challenges along the way and how have you overcome them? How do you get customers to really care about where their money and sponsorship is going and if it's really making a difference? You're working in an industry that is very polarised at a macro level along with the likes of climate deniers. How do you cope with that? Does it every make it challenging to maintain optimistic in the work that you're doing? And finally, what one piece of advice would you give to someone looking to join a start-up?Follow The Start-Up Diaries Podcast on LinkedIn or learn more about Burns Sheehan.

How many consecutive days could you eat Chickfila? Except Sundays, of course! Digging back into the news archive, we found reports about a teenage boy in Atlanta who broke a record by eating at Chickfila more than 100 days in a row. That inspired Mark Mendenhall, known as the mayor of his Chickfila, to eat Chickfila 114 days in a row. On day 15, Mark was at Disneyland with his family. He drove back to his Chickfila to keep the streak alive and then rejoined his family at Disney! Then in 2020, a Pennsylvania man saw that story and thought he could beat it. Matt Stoudt ended up with a 132-day Chickfila streak. Ben Boyles saw that story and got inspired. In this episode you'll meet Ben, the California man who holds this delicious record. And he did it all for charity! This episode was produced by Alison Storm and edited by Jim Mann, Mann Made Productions. For more fan experiences visit ChickfilaPodcast.com. This episode opens with President Richard Nixon's March 1974 visit to the Grand Ole Opry. Nixon was there to open the brand new Opry House on its first night after moving from downtown Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. It is a symbol of the one section of the country that never wavered, as President Nixon's problems mounted. In the South, we don't cut and run, especially when it is a President that stood strong during war time as this President had done. Unfortunately, the public support was not translating to the Judiciary Committee's three influential Democratic Congressmen Representatives Walter Flowers of Alabama, Ray Thornton of Arkansas, and Jim Mann of my home state of South Carolina. They were moving toward impeachment, undercutting the President's support in their states delegations. President Nixon sensing the momentum shifting away from him, reached out to Governor George Wallace of Alabama to see if he could not help him sway Walter Flowers, when Wallace refused, it was the moment President Nixon knew this fight was lost. He would lose the southern firewall that stood between himself and Impeachment. The President was also having trouble holding his Republicans together as Representatives William Cohen, Tom Railsback, W. Caldwell Butler, and Lawrence Hogan had decided to side with the democrats. As we listen in on the debate in this episode, you will hear these men, as some struggle to vote their conscience, and some make their decision in matter of fact fashion. You will get to hear the moments of high drama and one speech that has been an enormous part of the history of the moment from Representative Barbara Jordan of Texas. Jordan's speech contained many charges, most notably was that of Howard Hunt faking cables to embarrass the Kennedy Administration and involvement in the overthrow of the South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem. While that charge of Hunt faking cables tying Kennedy personally to the assassination of Diem was faked, it was faked by a man who, as a member of the CIA, had seen the real ones that had tied Kennedy to the overthrow of the Diem Government. A fact hidden from the public and Barbara Jorden for years afterwards. This is but one of many examples of charges made that with time, unsealed documents, and an explosive set of Church Hearings in the United States Senate would later be proven untrue. All to late for Watergate and Richard Nixon. But the President did have defenders, Representatives Charlie Wiggins of California and Charlie Sandman of New Jersey. The case they made has, in reality, stood the test of time and you will hear it in this episode too. Plus we will dismantle the mythology of the Watergate debate that the defense case was dismantled by a hearing full of specific accusations concerning the President that overwhelmed his defenders and that President Nixon's attorney, James St. Claire, was actually able to perform a real defense of the President. Neither was true and you will hear it here for yourself. A Chick-fil-A operator is making headlines for his winning recipe of work/life balance: offering full-time employees a three-day work week. Justin Lindsey, 41, is the local operator of Chick-fil-A Kendall in Florida. According to QSR Magazine, Lindsey was hitting incredible benchmarks but at the cost of overworking his staff. Many were logging 70 hours a week and sacrificing vacations. Since switching to this model he's had 100% retention at the management level. Susan Carnes is an account manager with Cooper Connect, a company whose sole focus is to recruit the perfect people for positions at Chick-fil-A. Elvis had Graceland. The Vanderbilts had The Biltmore. And Truett Cathy had the Dwarf House. Originally built in Hapeville, Georgia in 1946 with only 10 stools and four booths, the 512-square foot diner became the birthplace of the Original Chick-fil-A sandwich. Opened by Truett and his brother Ben, people flocked to the tiny restaurant 24-hours-a-day, 6-days-a-week to chow down on 20 cent cheeseburgers and 65 cent steak plates. The restaurant shut down in April 2021 to undergo a massive renovation. Jim Mann and Alison Storm took a tour of the brand new location, which is part-restaurant, part-museum to the legacy of Chickfila. Guests are welcomed by a life-size statue of Truett sitting on a bench out front. The iconic little red door is still an option for entering the (not so dwarf-like) 10,000 square foot restaurant. Inside, regulars will notice the familiar stained glass windows, retro brick and even light fixtures that once decorated the original Dwarf House.
