Can't believe this is Episode #75 of the Too Tall Sports Podcast... Wow, I want to thank everyone for taking this journey with me over the past year and a half... Cheers to you all for listening and here's to #100 before we know it! "Too Sense" on MLB finally paying for Minor League Housing: I have a lot of energy today after the Dodgers came back and won the other night but we still have more baseball to play... My big topic today is the fact the the always slow moving, Major League Baseball, has decided to start paying for housing accommodations for minor leaguers while in season. This is a huge move as it has become well documented that minor leaguers make less than minimum wage to play "professional baseball". For reference, most guys make less than $14,000 per year in total. They are asked to perform at a high level almost every night for 6 months and are treated like crap. This is at least a step in the right direction... Next up, better pay, food and travel perks and you might get some more high performers that mentally want to keep chasing that dream. Refer back to my episode with Jeremy Wolf, who founded More Than Baseball. Jeremy and his team formed a non profit, helping struggling minor leaguers through life. INTERVIEW: Chris Caulk + Former Walk-On Wide Receiver at USC Chris has the most indirect way of playing Division 1 football. He decided mid way through high school that he was going to give up baseball and shoot for the stars to play football in college... That dream was cut short even before he played a high school game as the knee injuries piled up. He spent a few years bouncing a round junior colleges until finally getting the call to play at USC, his dream school. Although he never played for the Trojans, he had an incredible experience there and we discuss what it was like to play for Clay Helton. We also dive into where he thinks the programs needs to go now and which quarterbacks threw the best ball... He's on his way to becoming an entertainment star, so follow his journey below. Former Mets minor leaguer and Director of Outreach for More than Baseball, the non-profit which supports the wellbeing and conditions of minor league baseball players, joins us to explain the work of the organisation, the need for structural change within baseball and what fans can do to both support current players, and campaign for justice for these baseball professionals. You can find out more about this incredible organisation at: www.morethanbaseball.orgAnd follow them on social @mtb_org
The biggest misconception about professional baseball at the minor league level is that the players are paid well and they live like big leaguers... That couldn't be further from the truth! As most of you know, I can attest to this playing professionally for 7 years. My guest today, Jeremy Wolf, is on a quest along with other dedicated members, to fix that and make it easier for guys in the minors. He helped start a Non-Profit called " More Than Baseball". It's goal to provide financial aid, better equipment, living conditions and mental health coaching for players in the minor leagues. Major League Baseball has made the gap between the big leagues and the minors so wide that it seems that they don't care until the players get called up to the show.He is incredibly passionate about this as am I, and his team is on their way to do great things to change the mindset around helping aspiring athletes. Jeremy is also going to play for Team Israel in the Olympic baseball tournament this summer after helping them qualify in 2019. We have a great conversation and you'll definitely have a few laughs in this episode!Follow More Than Baseball:morethanbaseball.org@mtb_orgFollow Me and SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and COMMENT on the Too Tall Sports Podcast:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOT1dawh_079qckq7OmFHAQInstagram: @tootallsportspodcastTwitter: @TooTallSportsFacebook Group: TooTallSportsPodcastApple Podcasts: Too Tall Sports PodcastSpotify: Too Tall Sports Podcasthttps://www.diamantenetwork.com/network/brettlorinPandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/too-tall-sports-podcast/PC:52128Email: tootallsportspodcast@gmail.com

One of the hardest parts for me about the COVID-19 shutdown is that there's no baseball right now. It's just as hard for the players. This week I got to chat with Jerad Eickhoff, a fellow Evansville native and pitcher for the San Diego Padres, about how he's handling not being able to play baseball and having to head back to Evansville for the time being. Jerad played for Philadelphia Phillies for five years before signing with the Padres this offseason, but long before that were close to being college classmates. Jerad signed with WKU after two years at Olney Central Junior College, but when he got drafted in the 15th round of 2011 Draft by the Texas Rangers, he decided to take the contract and start his professional career. But in all seriousness, Jerad is a great guy and despite his success, he's incredibly humble and genuine. He lives in Evansville in the offseason and he's back there now, so we talked about what he's been doing to stay sharp physically and mentally, his first impressions of his new team and new teammates, the challenges of cutting Spring Training short with no startup date determined, some of his favorite moments of his career so far, and the best and worst parts about being back in Evansville for the Spring. He also talked about what it's like as a player to be traded. This is something I've always wanted all the details on and Jerad went pretty in depth about his situation when he was traded as a minor leaguer from the Texas Rangers to the Phillies. For this episode, we partnered with More Than Baseball, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) aimed at evaluating financial need and raising money to help minor leaguers make it through difficult financial situations. According to MTB, before the season was suspended, minor leaguers were set to make between $1,170-$1,650 per month for five months. MTB and MLB, along with other organizations, worked together to provide a guaranteed $400 a week for minor league players through May 31, but MTB estimates at least 4,000 Minor League players are still in need of financial assistance. I talked with Jeremy Wolf, the executive director for MTB, about what this organization is doing and how we can help, so you'll hear a short interview with him before the interview with Jerad. I encourage you to donate money to their cause if you can. Sponsor This episode is brought to you by the good folks at Donato's Pizza here in Bowling Green. They're doing great work for the community. Yesterday they gave out 600 free pizzas. If you live in the BG area, please go support them. It's locally-owned, the pizza is fantastic, but more importantly right now they're still open for carry out as well as delivery with a no-contact delivery per your request. So if you're wondering what to do for your next meal, give Donato's a call. (Warning: explicit language.) In this episode, Jack and Sean interview Jeremy Wolf, the director of More Than Baseball, a charitable organization dedicated to providing necessary resources to minor league baseball players. The state in which these players live is so poor that they cannot even afford reasonable sleeping accommodations or meals, let alone equipment. The injustices here cross into the realm of treating others as you would wish to be treated, hence sportsmanship! Some explicit language used. Please keep the conversation going!
