When actor and noted liberal activist Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed the cinematographer and injured the director of a low-budget western he was producing, the questions immediately began: How did an apparent live round get inside the gun? Were safety protocols ignored? How experienced were the gun wranglers? Now, he's begun speaking out about the incident, and is insisting that the tragedy wasn't his fault, even though the gun was in his hands, loaded by a crew he hired on a production he was bankrolling. Actor Adam Baldwin (an extremely distant but negligible relation) has a reputation for playing memorable tough guys in action-oriented roles, including Jayne Cobb in the TV series Firefly & its theatrical sequel Serenity, Animal Mother in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, Casey in the hit action-comedy series Chuck, and other supporting roles in films such as Predator 2, Wyatt Earp, Independence Day and The Patriot. It should come as no surprise that he's got a lot of experience with using firearms on set, and has worked closely with the armorers and propmasters whose job it is to keep actors and crew safe. Adam joins the program to talk about his experiences using firearms on film & TV productions, and why he feels Alec Baldwin is so desperate to deflect blame for his own reckless actions. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 8:48 - SONG: “Together” by Marc Gunn from Single for KrabbeConnect Krabbe disease is a rare genetic disorder. It is a severe neurological condition that results from the loss of the protective covering surrounding nerve cells. Individuals affected by Krabbe disease do not make enough of a specific enzyme. Because of this, Krabbe disease slowly damages the white matter, brain and spinal cord, as well as nerves outside the Central Nervous System. 11:13 - STORY: Coming Together I’ve been thinking a lot about togetherness recently. What does it take to bring people together? What does it take to build a community? I can’t say that I really know. Nor am I any good at it. It makes me think of the presidential race. I will vote for Vice President Joe Biden because he’s a moderate. He has worked for years together with both sides of the political aisle, Democrats and Republicans. He seems to me a return to politicians who aren’t just about creating division. But I don’t know how he will bring people together, or if he can in these partisan times. As for me, I’m bad at it. I posted a new episode of the Celtfather Monthly podcast recently. My primary goal was to remind you to have a moratorium on sharing partisanship on social. Don’t share partisan memes. Don’t share news articles. Instead, just share your opinion on your social media. No sooner had I shared that podcast, when I didn’t follow my own advice. In so doing, I felt like I created division. I want to unite people. But I’m not good at it. I don’t know anyone who is. I know I get overrun by my emotions. I say dumb things in anger. Sometimes I will ignore facts just to suit my belief system. You would think that right and wrong were more straightforward. Black and white. But what’s that line by Obi Wan Kenobi in Empire Strikes Back. It’s not black and white. It’s full of opinion. Because my beliefs are different from yours. I am a Celt. To me that means, we understand what it means to be oppressed. And so we should stand up for others who are also oppressed or fighting for their individual rights, as long as it doesn’t impose on ours. As a Geek, those Celtic beliefs are strengthened by the lessons I learned from Star Trek, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. And by Doctor Who. We are all important, no matter your religion, the color of your skin, your sexual orientation, or what exotic race they come from. They are creatures of this universe and deserve respect. We should celebrate all of our differences. That’s what my next CD, Selcouth, is all about. It’s about being different, and proud of those differences. And not belittling someone else’s. It’s about coming together as a community of people who are different. Who are not like everyone else. We’re Celtic Geeks. Each of us is even different from other Celtic Geeks. But we embrace that difference as a group. I don’t know that this community idea really even resonates with you. I want a better world. And I believe we have the capability to make it better. By working together. By being selfless. By putting my neighbor before my own wants and desires. I feel like that is how we truly come together. But it might just be an idealistic goal that’s not attainable. I don't know. But I feel it essential that we try. 15:31 - SONG: “Health to the Company” sung by Marc Gunn, recorded by Brobdingnagian Bards from Real Men Wear Kilts 18:42 - JOIN THE PUB CHAT (read and see videos at bottom of notes) Are you a Celtic Geek? The mudders of Canton do that in the episode “Jaynestown” on the TV show Firefly. They take a horrible person, Jayne Cobb, who did one good thing for them and put him up on a pedestal. This song continues the story. The mudders realize they don’t need a statue. They can stand up for themselves. When i look on Youtube, it's always older people in their thirties or more. I don't see any youthful looking people playing it. Is it really bad for a kid to play that instrument? Even more weird, I'm 16 and really autistic, so i act like a kid. It somehow fits my weird personality in the most unique way, but most people would only associate the sound as background music for me, they would be surprised if i could actually play it too.” That’s a good question. I know it is a great instrument for kids. But I can think of at least two reasons. First it is typically associated with folk music. Not to say you can’t play anything on it. You can. Look up autoHarpers on YouTube and you’ll find a bunch of younger people playing Pop songs and what not But it is a stigma. Second, it is a heavy instrument. It might be a bit big for many kids. I do know there is a luthier in California and makes what’s called the sparrow autoharp. It is smaller and lightweight. Not the best sound as far as I’m concerned, but it’s a great introductory instrument. I taught at the California autoharp gathering a few years back. They do a lot of youth outreach. We taught some kids. But even there it seems most kids probably would rather learn to play the guitar. I’m with you though. I love the sound of the instrument but I also feel like it fits my weird personality. I love that I play an instrument that few other people play. And I can also honestly say that no one in the world plays the autoharp like I do. My suggestion is that you just start playing it. Figure out its strengths and weaknesses. Make it your own. You can do some brilliant things on the instrument. Find out more about Autoharp music here.

They pose as buyers of “mud” (a type of clay) because the magistrate (Higgins) doesn’t take kindly to outsiders who aren’t buying. Mikey: Jayne is nervous because he botched robbery on this planet a few years ago, a robbery of Magistrate Higgins, and wears a ridiculous disguise. When they get into town they realize that Jayne is viewed as a local hero, and even has a statue in his honor and songs in his honor. Marc: They learn that the contact they were to meet had been caught and punished, but that his stash of contraband is still there. Then, Jayne gets recognized, and any chance of lying low disappear. Mal decides to use Jayne’s fame as a distraction so they can get the contraband. Mikey: Inara meets with Magistrate Higgins, who wants her to sleep with his son, Fess, a 26-year-old virgin, in order to “make a man of him.” She assures Fess that virginity is just one state of being and that he should be his own man. Marc: On the ship, an agitated River dismantles Shepard Book's Bible, insisting that it makes no sense and that she has to "fix" it. Book manages to calm her down and explains that the Bible is not about making sense, but about believing in something. Later, she attempts to repair and return it to him, but panics when she sees his wild head of hair that he normally keeps tied back. Mikey: The Magistrate learns that Jayne Cobb is back in town and releases "Stitch" from what appears to have been four years of solitary confinement in a very small cell. It’s revealed that Stich is Jayne’s former partner, whom he betrayed, from the botched robbery years ago. Higgins gives Stitch a loaded shotgun and then tells him that Jayne is back. Marc: After Inara and Fess have shared their intimate moment, she learns from him that Jayne is about to be captured and tried, and that the ship has been "land-locked". He tells her that he would rather Jayne escape. Mikey: The crew finds the contraband, and get it back to the ship behind the distraction of Jayne Day, then Mal & Kaylee go back to get Jayne, who is making a speech in the town square in fro nt of his statue. That speech is interrupted by a gunshot from Stitch. Marc: Stitch tells the mudders that Jayne is no hero, that the robbery was botched and that the only reason Jayne threw the money from their damaged aircraft is that it was still too heavy to fly after Jayne threw Stitch from the aircraft. Stitch fires the shotgun at Jayne, but a mudder jumps in the way of the blast. Mikey: Jayne stabs Stitch with a knife and, after a brief struggle, Stitch dies. Jayne then checks on the mudder who took the shot for him, finding him dead. Jayne knocks the statue of himself over, and they go back to the ship. Marc: With everyone back on Serenity, Wash attempts to take off, but finds the ship "land-locked" per the magistrate's order. It is quickly released, however, as Fess decides to prove himself a man by defying his father's attempt to capture the "Hero of Canton." Marc: I am ever so grateful for the kindness and generosity of Gunn Runners over on Patreon. Mikey: The generosity of my Patreon supporters is amazing, and helps keep the music being made. Show Notes Episode 200: “Just A Little Prick” This week Host Dave Bledsoe celebrates two hundred shows by finally getting himself checked out after that long weekend in Juarez. (Diagnosis: he's still owes 800 Pesos on bar tab) On the show this week we ask the doctors to give it to us straight, only to find we can't take the news about anti-vaxxers. Along the way we learn the history of vaccines panics (turns out people LIKED dying of Smallpox) and how they crop up in the same places every so often. We learn what Moses, Jesus and Mohammed had to say about getting vaccines. (Nothing. Absolutely nothing.) We run down the Who's Who of the Anti-Vaxxer movement and find ourselves shocked that the non-Baldwin Brother Baldwin is involved! (Oh, Adam, we loved you as Jayne Cobb!) We also look into the medical “professionals” who support the wildly inaccurate claims of the movement. (For a price.) Finally, we assign blame to the one person who has done more to make the movement flourish than any other. (Rhymes with Zark Muckerberg.) Our Sponsor this week is Smallpox, why NOT give Smallpox another chance? We open the show with Reginald's diagnosis and close with The Madcap covering an easily curable malady. Finally, from all of us at What the HELL Were You Thinking, we sank thank you for supporting us for TWO HUNDRED of these dumb shows and ask from the bottom of our heart, what the HELL were you thinking? Firefly is one of the most beloved projects from the mind of Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It came out in 2002 and was canceled after only 14 episodes. It developed such an incredible cult following that in 2005, a movie was released based on the TV series. http://celtfather.com The show inspired me so much that I released a CD with Bedlam Bards called Firefly Drinking Songs. Now I have a new album out for Browncoats called As Long As I’m Flyin. You can buy it at FireflyDrinkingSongs.com. How did Firefly go from a cancelled TV show to a new album 16 years after it was released? I’ll tell you all about it right now. I was first introduced to Firefly just a few short months before the movie was released. I remember binge watching DVDs. I absolutely loved show. It had a realness to it that appealed to me, despite being a Sci Fi Western. Firefly became my all-time favorite show ever. It hasn’t budged from that standing. I still watch it regularly. I don’t consider myself an ambitious songwriter. I don’t write a lot of songs. I write slowly and I am usually “inspired” by something. I never planned to start a genre of Firefly drinking songs. It just sort of happened. In 2007, I was on the first Brobdingnagian Bards tour of Ireland. I got an email from fan telling me there is a songwriting contest called Sing A Song for Saffron. Saffron was a nefarious woman who was featured twice in the series. She first appears in "Our Mrs Reynolds" where she sneakily marries the captain of the Firefly ship, Serenity. She then attempts to seduce him. When that fails, her true purpose is revealed, leading the crew to their deaths to steal their ship. Saffron appears again later in the episode "Trash." She works with the crew to steal a famous laser gun. She attempts to double cross the crew only to find they are ready for her. Beautiful and seductive, Saffron is a favorite side character. So there I was in Ireland when I get an email from a fan that read, “you should write a song for this contest.” I was immediately struck with a parody idea using the traditional Irish melody “May Morning Dew”. I submitted my song “She Said Her Name Was Saffron” to the contest a week after returning from Ireland. The song won the Best Parody award. A few months later, I sang that song for The Signal Firefly Podcast for a live event at DragonCon. I had no further plans to write more Firefly songs. But a year later, I was driving Back to DragonCon when I was struck with an idea. I had just finished watching the episode "Jaynestown." The crew lands on Higgins Moon, a town that sells mud. The crew is hired to transport contraband off planet. One of the crew, Jayne Cobb, warns about how he had trouble with the local magistrate a few years back. We soon learn that Jayne has become a folk hero of the town with a statue and his own protest song “Hero of Canton”. That song is a favorite among Browncoats. Everyone of us longs to have a mug of mudders milk and sing along. But as I was driving back to DragonCon, I wondered what other songs might’ve been heard in that little pub in Canton. So I wrote one. The song was called "Monahan's Mudder's Milk". I wrote it as a sort of Woody Guthrie-style protest against the challenges faced by the mudders of Higgins' Moon. This song was super important to me. First, because it sort of solidified what would eventually become my most-popular musical niche, Sci Fi Drinking Songs. But it was also the launching point for Firefly Drinking Songs and my newest album, As Long As I'm Flyin'. It was around this time that the idea of recording a CD of Firefly Drinking Songs began. I set up concerts at Gen Con and Dragon Con dedicated to this theme. Each show was packed. The conventions were turning people away at the door. The atmosphere at these shows was amazing. I really wanted to capture that feel. So I decided on recording a live CD. I wanted it to feel like you were in that little pub in Canton. My biggest challenge was I didn't have enough songs to create an album. So I turned to someone who did. The Bedlam Bards were the first to release a full CD of Firefly music. It was called On The Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity. The album captured everything that people love about Firefly and the fandom. It's fantastic. Cedric is the primary songwriter for the group. When I called him up to ask if he'd like to make an album with me, he was psyched. We spent next few months performing Firefly Drinking Songs at various venues and conventions trying to capture an amazing live recording. It finally happened at church in Round Rock, Texas that my friend Jan Czenkusch booked for us. It had the energy, the sound. It was fantastic. We released the CD. It quickly became one of my most-popular albums. Once again, I had no plans for a follow up. I was trying to get out of doing themed CDs. Most of my 20+ albums are themed. Some are Irish. Some are about cats. Some are sci fi. While themed CDs are easier to sell, they are much more difficult and costly to produce. So when I wrote "Bring Me Home, Boys", a song based on the episode "The Message" where a body is mailed to the crew with a message to bring his body home to his family, I didn't put on a Firefly CD. Nor did I put the song "Browncoats Keep Flyin'" one one. That's a song I co-wrote with Rie Sheridan Rose. Though I did put it on Sci Fi Drinking Songs. Again, I had no real plans to record another Firefly album, despite its success. But one year at Gen Con, I was singing "Close Your Eyes". This is a song by Daniel Glasser. Many call it the "Demon Lullaby". I have a whole podcast episode about that song. Follow the link in the shownotes. In the middle of the song, I changed the lyrics to the "reavers beneath your bed are gonna eat your face". The crowd erupted in laughter and for the next few years Browncoats asked when I would put that song on a CD. In 2016, I set a milestone on Patreon. If I reached that goal, I would record a 4-song EP of Firefly songs, exclusively for my Patrons. I quickly hit that goal. But as I started recording the EP, more songs came out. So I asked Rie Sheridan Rose, a long-time songwriting collaborator to send me some more lyrics. She did. Next thing I knew, I had a full album of Browncoat drinking songs. I launched a Kickstarter and the rest is history. Now one of the things I sort of glossed over earlier is the Firefly Drinking Songs show. This show took on a life of its own. When I started, I was just singing songs about Firefly. But I wanted something bigger. I wanted something more inclusive. You see, I have long been a part of the reenacting shows. Mostly notably are Renaissance festivals. At faires, you're encouraged to not just play music, they want you to be a part of the atmosphere, to recreate the Renaissance. Early on, I absolutely LOVED faires for that very reason. I could pretend I was in the Renaissance. But the simple fact is I'm not an actor. So keeping that going ALL DAY LONG was a bit exhausting and tedious. So I took on a new character, that is basically me. I think that's why I love the Firefly Drinking Songs show so much. I don't usually write music ABOUT things I love, like Firefly. I prefer to write as if I'm a PART of the world. Firefly is the epitome of this. The music I wrote was as if I was living in the Firefly 'Verse. The show was created as if I was a touring musician singing songs for Browncoats. The show is about an hour long. With any luck, the one at Gen Con this year will be about an hour and a half. But for that period of time, it's easy to get and stay in character. So that's why I do. My family is all from East Texas. So I put on my Texas accent and step into a world where people are on the fringe of civilized society. They're looking for an escape. They want to hear music that celebrates the independents who lost the Unification War. They want to escape the hard life of working in the mud pits. For an hour, they are a part of that. We sing songs about the "Hero of Canton," "Blue Sun," reavers and the Browncoats. It's absolutely incredible. It's been 16 years since Firefly was started and canceled. Yet new Browncoats are made every day as they discover this incredible show. One of my dreams is to take the Firefly Drinking Songs show on the road. I want to unite Browncoats once again for a Shindig among Shindigs and an inspired passion to keep building the 'Verse. Because to quote Mal, "we have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." I should point out that the physical CD will only be available in March. So if you like CDs, then you should order it as soon as possible. --- Thank you for listening. Heroes 'ain't what they used to be or so Mal and the crew discover on a backwater world where Jayne Cobb is known as a folk-legend rather than the ruttin' man-ape the crew know him to be. It's a spectacle that warrants some consideration and as such, it's given fair dues by Paul, Bill and Andrew as they view JAYNESTOWN, the 7th episode of FIREFLY.

The crew's job as the middleman on a deal that actually goes relatively smoothly takes a back seat to the unlikeliest of folk heroes, Jayne Cobb. Viewed as a man of the people after standing up to the magistrate, Jayne gives these poor indentured servants hope even after they learn the truth behind his origin story.
