Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 12, 2025 is: fester FESS-ter verb Something that festers becomes worse as time passes. Fester can also mean, in the context of wounds, sores, etc., “to become painful and infected.” // We should deal with these problems now instead of allowing them to fester. See the entry > Examples: “Minor plumbing leaks left to fester have snowballed into water seeping down walls and out of light fixtures ...” — Devyani Chhetri, The Dallas Morning News, 11 Mar. 2025 Did you know? Both noun and verb forms of the English word fester come from the Latin noun fistula, meaning “pipe” or, less pleasantly, “fistulous ulcer.” Accordingly, the noun fester refers to a sore that forms or discharges pus, while the oldest sense of the verb fester means “to generate pus.” A boil, for example, is a festering infection of a hair follicle. Over time, the verb—as many words do—picked up a figurative sense, and fester began to be used not only for the worsening of a wound but for a worsening state, situation, etc.

Basketball New Zealand has punched itself in the face. Broke its own nose, and is trying to tell us it walked into a door. The barely believable antics of not only the week just gone, but the entire season, and if players I've spoken to are to be believed, the pre-season, leads me to think that they are the architects of their own humiliation. The Indian Panthers were suspended this week after a series of stumbles which eventually lead to them falling over their own feet, leaving themselves prone on the court floor. Yes, the Panthers has been a problem child, yes, they've failed to deliver on court, yes, they've treated their staff both on court and off with disdain bordering on exploitation, yes they've dragged a wonderful competition into the swamp with them, but no, the blame should not lie solely at their Air Jordaned feet. Claims from the commission chair Tracey Garland that “careful due diligence” was applied before their inclusion in the league are difficult to swallow. I did some retrospective diligence. A quick skim of the internet around the history of the parties involved with the Panthers (yeah, I'm like an antivaxxer – I did my own research) points to clumsy management and financial chaos. More red flags than a wealthy, good looking hit on Tinder. Sal's NBL, NZ Basketball, whoever holds ultimate responsibility for this circus needs to stand up and tell us who opened the door and let these 20 clowns jammed into a tiny car in. They can finger point and obfuscate all they want. The Indian Panthers management are a fast talking, blame laying excuse factory, but if they weren't in the league, this wouldn't have happened. Fess up BBNZ, this is a monster you let in, own it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today, we talk about the power of humility in frontline leadership. When done appropriately, showing our humanness can be powerful in building trust and respect within our teams. Many leaders see admitting mistakes or being wrong as a sign of weakness. But in truth, sincere admission of mistakes coupled with a genuine intention to do better in the future is a profound strength. Of course, if you keep making the same mistakes without changing, you will lose any trust you might have initially gained. Conversely, never owning up to your mistakes will almost certainly erode trust, respect, and confidence. As leaders, we must model the behavior we want to see in our teams. We want our team members to feel comfortable coming to us with their mistakes or concerns. Why would they take the risk of being vulnerable if they don't see it modeled and reinforced by their leader? There is immense power in humility, my friends, so don't be afraid to show it as a leader. The key to turning failure into success is to be honest about it, learn from it, and take action to improve. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
This month, we're doing a deep dive series into mom guilt—why it's so pervasive and what we can do about it. You can find the playlist with all of the episodes in the series here. Fess up: everyone's got a Bad Mom Moment. Or twelve. We tend to hold these things really close, our shame rooted in deep certainty that no other mother has ever temporarily forgotten their baby in the toy aisle at Target. Guess what? You're not alone. Here are some of our listeners' Bad Mom Moments– and more than a few of our own. Our guest this week is Arianna Bradford, the brains behind The NYAM (Not Your Average Mom) Project, a website dedicated to helping parents -- moms especially -- celebrate the person they are outside of their role as a parent. Her book, SHAME ON YOU: BIG TRUTHS FROM A BAD MOM, is a hilarious collection of parenting essays that focus as much on a mother's mental health as they do on kids, and how very, very strange they are. Welcome back to The Untrapped Podcast, where we dive deep into the art of mastering time for life success. As Johnny Mow aptly puts it, "It's all about your time. So the older I get, the more valuable my time is, and becoming a master of my time is critical to life success." In today's episode, we're exploring key topics and insights from Keith and our guest, Johnny, as they share their wisdom on time management, personal growth, and prioritization. "It's all about your time. That's what he said. So the older I get, the more valuable my time is and becoming master my time is critical to life success. " - Johnny Mow Topics Covered: The importance of prioritizing your time The importance of having a plan The spring rush trap How to take the mountain of education Fess up when you mess up Managing your time and budget How to change the way you see things The importance of putting yourself first Raising prices and raising your worth Key Takeaways "And I said I'm gonna change actually, I dropped a whole bunch of accounts. I started prioritizing my time. And I don't know if you can see this, but I have like five statements I live by. And this is one of them. It says proper planning prevents poor performance. And when it comes to priority prioritization of your family, you have to plan for it. It has to be on your mind. As soon as you get up in the morning. " - Johnny "When you change the way you see things, the things that you see literally change, just like going through this like putting your hand on a hot stove, and it burns the hell out of you like running around. I'm just on a quick rant here. Yeah, for your customers. Because when I had people on the podcast that have been through stuff, and they've come to these conclusions, then they'll speak it from the end result. I'm obsessed with the emotional, the breakdown, sometimes you gotta have a breakdown in order to have a breakthrough.
