Lesa Brackbill is a wife, mother, advocate, and author raising awareness about Krabbe Disease. Her daughter Victoria was born in July 2014 and began exhibiting symptoms of Krabbe Disease in January 2015. “She was perfectly healthy, so we thought. And it wasn't until she was five months old that everything changed. She became a completely different baby. It was it was kind of like a light bulb or a light switch had been flipped. She had stopped smiling, talking, laughing, playing, you name it. And we were like, first time parents. Is this, okay? Like, I don't think so. So, we began to pursue answers, but we never, ever would have dreamed that we would receive a diagnosis like Krabbe disease, which is fatal. And so, on February 13th, we were told that our six-month-old daughter was dying.” Lesa soon found there was no cure for Krabbe, and treatment could've began at birth. However, Victoria was not screened for Krabbe when she was born. “When I think back to diagnosis Day, I think about how when we were pleading with the neurologist for something that we could do because we were like, it's 2015, what do you mean? Our daughter's dying and there's nothing you can do. And she said, if they had caught it at birth, they could have treated it.”   Victora passed away on March 27, 2016. In her honor, Lesa has devoted her time to advocating for newborn screening of Krabbe, and raising awareness of Krabbe Disease. She's even strengthened the Newborn Screening Program through Act 133 that was signed into law in Pennsylvania in 2020.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's literally cherry on the cake to speak to a company said to be the only in the world so far that produces wine from – not grapes, but cherries!  Our guest for today is Frederiksdal, a Danish firm that specialises in beverages like juices and wines made from Danish Stevns Cherry.  These are not the sweet cherries we eat during summer time, but those that taste sour with high sugar and acid content.  Such cherries are called Grapes of the North. They are not eaten directly but are said to be perfect for making items like sauces, juices, jams or even wines.  Back to Frederiksdal, the firm is named after the Frederiksdal Estate in Southern Denmark which grows these cherries.  It traces back to 1756 and has been owned by the Krabbe family for three generations, who used to sell the cherries to juice manufacturers.  But as life would have it, cherry prices tumbled in 2006, prompting its third generation owner to make the cherries farmed into wine and juices on its own instead.  The story takes itself forward from there, as the firm grows to become one of the biggest wineries in Nordic cities, shipping its products to all parts of the world. So how has Frederiksdal's value proposition changed over the years and how has that transformation process reaped benefits for the firm? Meanwhile, the company had said in a media report that its key export markets now include Singapore, China, the US and Japan. But what is driving export demand right now and what will continue to be its key drivers of growth? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Harald Krabbe, Founder, Frederiksdal.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 214 A Courageous Gift - The Power of Brain and Tissue Donation in Rare Disease Research with Anne Rugari Anne Rugari is an advocating powerhouse, an author of two children's books, a mom, and two of her children have passed away from Krabbe disease. She joins us to share her personal story and also share her knowledge about tissue and organ donation. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you share how you became part of the rare disease world? In 1986, my second child Nick received a diagnosis of Krabbe disease, or globoid cell leukodystrophy, a terminal disease that took him just after his first birthday. I also had a three year old son who was unaffected and we decided we probably wouldn't have another child with a rare disease if we wanted more children. In 1999, my daughter Gina was born and tested for Krabbe disease, confident the odds were with us. Unfortunately, she tested positive. As a result of an umbilical cord blood transplant she had at three weeks old, she did remarkably well and lived to fifteen years old.  What were your considerations when deciding to donate Gina's brain for research? It's an emotional, practical and religious decision. There are so many factors that play into the decision. For me personally, I wanted to make sure I was making a sound decision morally and spiritually. I felt we weren't going to learn more about the disease unless there were human tissues and samples to study. It was a decision I felt strongly about to help others. There's a source of comfort knowing that the tissues donated are being used to move research forward.  Why is it important to consider and arrange tissue donation in advance? It's emotional and you don't want to be making those decisions at a time when you've lost them. There's also some coordination that needs to be planned, ensuring there's a pathologist available at the hospital for the retrieval. Planning in advance allows you time to coordinate the details, like if passing takes place at home instead of the hospital, and notifying the funeral home so they can coordinate with the pathologist. Getting the logistics organized in advance makes the transition when someone passes away easier. Discuss plans in advance with your care team so they can help with arrangements and support you.  LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 213 - Finding Strength In Every Step https://effieparks.com/podcast/episode-213-finding-strength-in-every-step ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 198 - Advocating with Heart - Striking the Balance Between Medical Insights and Personal Narratives - A Tribute to Valerie Marie with RING14 Co-Founder Yssa Dean DeWoody https://effieparks.com/podcast/episode-198-advocating-with-heart Courageous Parents Network  https://courageousparentsnetwork.org/ Anne Rugari Website https://www.annerugari.com/ Just Like Me!: A Book About A Girl with a Rare Disease https://www.amazon.com/Just-Like-Me-about-Disease/dp/0982218710 Just Like Me Too! https://www.amazon.com/Just-Like-Too-Anne-Rugari/dp/1970063378 CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast/?hl=en Built Ford Tough Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1877643259173346/

Education Bookcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2022 43:03

Entrepreneurship is an important part of a thriving economy, and entrepreneurship education is intended to make sure that those who have the potential to succeed in this way have the resources and knowledge to do so. But the opportunity for innovation, being one's own boss, and making money are not the only reasons that people become entrepreneurs. Some do so to fulfil a kind of fantasy, or simply to look good. And there is an entire educational sub-industry offering to help them to indulge this fantasy, for a price. In Towards an "Un"trepreneurial Economy: the Entrepreneurship Industry and the Veblenian Entrepreneur, authors Hartmann, Spicer, and Krabbe try to explain a strange trend in recent years: while entrepreneurial activity has gone up, success rates for entrepreneurial ventures have gone down. After considering several possible explanations, they ultimately conclude that a major reason for "excess entry" into what one might call "high-class" entrepreneurship (e.g. founding a tech start-up) is due to a sub-class of entrepreneurs who are not driven to pursue real opportunities in the market, but are simply trying to adopt the identity of an entrepreneur because of its high social status. Dubbed "Veblenian entrepreneurs" (or sometimes "wantrepreneurs") after Thorstein Veblen, the sociologist who coined the term conspicuous consumption at the end of the 19th century, these are individuals who are drawn in by a huge industry designed to sell people a dream and a lifestyle which can take them away from everyday mundanity and make them seem successful to their peers. Consumers of the entrepreneurship industry's products (such as courses, conferences, publications, and consultancy) have been shown to engage in more entrepreneurial activity, while actually having lower success rates. This idea is somewhat analogous to the notion of human capital vs. signalling in education economics - in other words, what is the value of education? Does it make you a better and more productive person, or does it just make you look good to employers? (What is the value of entrepreneurship? Does it contribute to the economy, or does it just make you look good on social media?) It also has implications for entrepreneurship educators. Should we really be encouraging entrepreneurship for everybody who is interested, or should we be discouraging those who are least likely to succeed, so that they can make better choices? Enjoy the episode. *** RELATED EPISODES 115. Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber 103. What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy by James Paul Gee 23.
