Welcome to In the 'Verse: Song Crafting for the Firefly Universe. We look at Reputation vs. Action and Crime with a Conscience in episode 2 of the TV show Firefly, "The Train Job". MARC: This is part two of a six part series where we rewatch episodes of Firefly with the goal to find themes and stories that we can write songs about. They pledged enough money each for him to hit this big milestone which allowed this show to happen. MARC: There are still eight more episodes of Firefly. They find themselves backed to a cliff outside the bar, and Wash rescues them with a nicely timed arrival and some empty threats. Mikey: In the infirmary, Simon tends to his psychologically damaged sister and Shepherd Book compliments his bravery. Marc: The crew takes a job from Adelei Niska, a crime lord with a tendency to torture and kill those who fail to live up to their ends of the bargain. They’re to steal two crates from a moving train. Mal doesn’t ask what’s in them. He just wants the job. Mikey: They have a plan, and, long story short, it goes off, but not without a hitch. Mal and Zoe are stuck on the train til the next stop—Paradiso, a mining town—a delay which will cause them to miss their appointed rendezvous with Niska. Marc: In Paradiso, all the train’s occupants are detained and questioned. Mal and Zoe pose as newlyweds looking for work, and learn that what they’d stolen was medicine for a degenerative disease caused by mining conditions. Mikey: The sheriff suspects something is wrong with their story, but then Inara shows up, sent by a concerned crew, and using her elevated status as a registered companion is able to claim that Mal is her runaway “indentured man” who persuaded Zoe to leave her husband. The sheriff buys this story and lets them leave. Marc: Back on the ship, Mal decides to return the medicine to the townspeople, but Niska’s henchmen turn up and there’s a big fight, which our heroes win. Mikey: Mal & Zoe head towards town, intending to drop off the crates and notify the sheriff once they are well away, but they find themselves surrounded by the sheriff’s men. Realizing what they have done, he lets them go. Marc: Outside Serenity, Mal offers Niska's money to a tied up Crow—Niska’s henchman, but Crow threatens to hunt Mal down. Mal casually kicks Crow into Serenity's running engine intake, killing him. The next henchman is much more cooperative. Mikey: And finally, back on an Alliance cruiser, two mysterious men in suits and wearing blue gloves inquire about a girl and show the captain a photo of River Tam. So lets see, we have a child like engineer, an anti-hero gunslinger trying to take whatever odd job he can to make ends meet and preferably get into space and keep flying, a super powerful female character that arrives unconscious in a case after being broken out of government captivity. Our hero is going to protect said superwoman while the galactic government of the many systems tries to hunt her down.Nope, its not Firefly - its an anime called Outlaw Star. Did Joss Whedon steal Firefly from this? No! Not a chance. But that doesn't stop people from seeing the similarities and saying he did. But stop, lets say he did get the idea for River Tam from this, and the basic setting of a used future, space western where humanity has colonized many systems and everything is a mix of English and Chinese culture and language...would that make Firefly any less amazing? To me no. To some maybe and that is at the center of this months topic, Copy Cat August. Joss Whedon did not steal Firefly from this terrible anime. Sorry Ragemaster, it is horrible and largely unwatchable. Sorry Anime fans, maybe I (Scott) just don't like Anime. (Sacrilege!!! Fake Science Fiction Fan!!! Fake Nerd!!!!!)

This month we delve into a touchy topic among science fiction fans - borrowing from a past work. If Terminator was inspired by two Harlan Ellison scripts from the Outer Limits does that invalidate the movie? If Joss Whedon ripped off River Tam from a bad anime does that reduce Firefly to garbage or make Whedon a no talent hack? Did these things even actually occur? That's what we discuss this month in Copy Cat August. Sci-Fi Malady RSS

Matt and I tend to disagree on this episode — I love the humor and the way it sets up the film, “Serenity” — but I actually saw the film first and so it hits me in a way it doesn’t Matt. The series is clearly still finding its footing, but there is excellent world building and one of the most expertly and hilariously edited interrogation scenes of all time, despite the weirdness and out-of-placeness of the Reaver plot. Nevertheless, we see Summer Glau as River Tam really start to develop and become hypnotic as a character and an actor here, and thus it remains essential Firefly viewing (I mean, we only have 14, so….) Even in the midst of the ever-expanding Astro-kerfuffle, if you've got a job, the crew of the Serenity can do it. Don't much care what it is. Even if the job is to help a weird guy named Zorg get his hands on four stones hidden inside the body of a blue alien opera singer. Mal and the gang converge on Fhloston Paradise and get immediately embroiled in all the screaming, shooting, exploding nonsense going on there, but in the confusion, River Tam, the genius telepath who "ain't quite right," slips away to find the stones by herself. She is soon confronted by a woman with orange hair and questionable taste in space fashion, the fifth element herself, Leeloo. Conflict is inevitable between these two supernaturally gifted warriors. Will River dance gracefully (and barefoot) over the fallen form of another opponent, or is Leeloo the only power in the 'verse that can stop her? Dan and Miles team up against Kit and Sharon in a spousal battle of husbands and wives while MeganBob presides from her space throne! Also featuring conversations about sex, bodily functions, and Disney movies. But you already knew that.

Everything’s shiny on SERENITY (2005)! As part of my lead-up to Star Wars, I'm releasing film commentaries for my favorite space opera movies. My Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014) and Star Trek (2009) commentaries have been big hits, but I now bring you the best film of them all: SERENITY (2005) - Joss Whedon's magnum opus finale to the cult hit FIREFLY series and my favorite space "opera" (comedy) since the original Trilogy. With characters/actors who had a season of TV to develop all time great chemistry, SERENITY feels like coming home, a band of lovable pirates who form a very strong family while making you fall over laughing with classic Whedon-esque A+ humor. Nathan Fillion kills the comedy as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, but Summer Glau steals the movie as the psychic/assassin/adorable River Tam. And I can’t neglect Chiwitel Ejiofor as one of the greatest and most charismatic psychotic villains ever. Enjoy, humans. Sunday, April 07, 2013 Tell us lies. Isaiah 30:8-15, 18 NLT Now go and write down these words. Write them in a book. They will stand until the end of time as a witness that these people are stubborn rebels who refuse to pay attention to the Lord’s instructions. They tell the seers, “Stop seeing visions!” They tell the prophets, “Don’t tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies. Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path. Stop telling us about your ‘Holy One of Israel.’” This is the reply of the Holy One of Israel: “Because you despise what I tell you and trust instead in oppression and lies, calamity will come upon you suddenly— like a bulging wall that bursts and falls. In an instant it will collapse and come crashing down. You will be smashed like a piece of pottery— shattered so completely that there won’t be a piece big enough to carry coals from a fireplace or a little water from the well.” This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it. So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help. _______________________________________ Could Isaiah be writing about you? I like a bit of Sci-Fi and one of my favourite little series is the short lived but much loved Firefly programme. And the film Serenity that followed. In episode 4 Jaynestown, River Tam attempts to 'correct' the character Shepherd Book's Bible. River Tam, a genius though mentally disturbed girl due to government experimentation, is caught rewriting the Bible. River had removed pages, cut bits out, reordered parts and rewritten lots of the Bible. She couldn't accept the bits that didn't match her understanding and vision for the world. And neither could God's people in Isaiah's time. Nor can most people today I dare say. We can't accept hell, judgment, or God creating everything for himself. We want to ignore the difficult bits. We can't compute the cross being God's plan since before the creation. We don't like being told we have to love our enemies, and we'd rather ignore the implications of loving our neighbour as ourselves. Truth be told, the majority of God's word little fits with our world view and we've busily set about to reconstruct it according to our own liking. 2 Timothy 4:3 " For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear." It seems the time foretold by Paul has been before and will be no stranger to the future. Apparently Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac) wasn't the first to ask to be told lies. God's people didn't want to be told the truth either. Neither God nor Isaiah his spokesman are the puppets of the people's whim. The truth would be told and the people would have to decide. Hiding behind their candy coated world view wouldn't suspend the coming judgment. So can you handle the truth? Jack Nicholson, as Colonel Nathan R. Jessup in the film A Few Good Men, tries to paint a picture of honor, trust and strength. But under the guise of national security, murder had taken place. Isaiah and Jesus both were threatened, scoffed and abused for telling the truth. But with the terrible truth of our rebellion and its deserved judgment is the invitation to find safety from the judgment by getting close to the judge. And so grace is the scandal most people are unwilling to accept. How can God condemn the treacherous, lie-propagating people in one verse and offer them protection in the next? He can because of Jesus. He can because of the cross. I believe that the most difficult thing for people to hear from God today is not the exacting holiness of a perfect sinless Saviour, but rather the right of judgment and the extravagance of grace. Quick, escape the coming wrath of God and be safe in his expansive grace. God will judge. God does save. Will you be saved?
