In this week's episode I am joined once again by JJ Lawhorn. JJ is a country music singer that sings about what he knows, and one of those things is Hounds! I have really been enjoying his latest album The Huntsman Volume II, and in particular the song titled Treed. JJ was kind enough to invite me down to record another podcast, and do a little coon hunting. He has some great stories for this episode. His story telling reminds me of the great Jerry Clower with the sound effects and all. Be sure to check out JJ's website for more info about his music. https://www.jjlawhorn.com Sponsors: https://conkeysoutdoors.com Promo Code TREETALKINTIME5 https://fullcrymag.com Merch: https://treetalkin.com/collections Social Media: https://www.patreon.com/treetalkintime https://www.instagram.com/treetalkinmedia https://www.facebook.com/treetalkinmedia

We're so glad you are here! Thanks for checking out Sunday's message!-- SUNDAY'S NOTES --When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had killed all the prophets of Baal. 1 Kings 19:1 NLTSo Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.” Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. When Steve's brother Randy introduced him to the wit and wisdom of professional speaker Lee McBride, there was an immediate connection to the rotund comedian and pastor from the Land of the Crimson Tide. Later, when Randy revealed that McBride had penned a poem that had spoken to his sportsman's soul like none he had heard, Steve knew he wanted McBride on the podcast. This episode introduces Lee McBride to the Gone To The Dogs audience with the promise that this will not be his last appearance. McBride is a storyteller in the mold of Jerry Clower; down home, southern, and with an affinity for real life situations, many of them revolving around hunting and especially hunting with hounds. This is a pop-a-top-on-grape-Nehi-and-take-a-seat-on-the-pop-cooler type of episode that anyone with a soul's connection to the out-of-doors will love and appreciate. Give it a listen and see for yourself.

On this episode of the Bear Grease Podcast, we're diving deep into the heart of southern cultural identity and the mind of Jerry Clower. Does that name ring a bell? Jerry was thrust into national fame in the 1970s when a story he told about coonhunting topped the country charts. I'm interested in those odd places where rural culture -- and specifically hunting -- crosses tracks with the mainstream. Wilson Rawls bridged that gap with his book “Where the Red Fern Grows,” and Jerry did it with comedy about hunting varmints. He's been gone for a long time, but I was able to meet up with his old Amite County neighbor in East Fork, Mississippi: a man named John Newman. He'll give us a behind the scenes look into who Jerry was, and some of it may surprise you. And believe it not, Brent Reaves met Jerry Clower and saw his famed Gold Cadilac. Brent swears it was as long as a battleship. Trust me boys and girls, you're not going to want to miss this one! Mississippi's Country Comedian, Jerry Clower, described himself as having “backed into showbusiness.” Clower began his career as an assistant county agent in Oxford before taking a job selling seed corn and then fertilizer for Mississippi Chemical Corporation. It was while calling on customers, he began telling stories about his rural upbringing in East Fork, Mississippi. The homespun humor, combined with Clower's gregarious personality, led to more and more speaking opportunities at churches, trade shows, and civic clubs until finally, he was convinced to cut a record in 1970. The unlikely success of that recording, sold by mail order and out of the trunk of Clower's car, and the airplay it received by supporters like country DJ Big Ed Wilkes, led to a recording contract with MCA. By the time Clower was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1973, he was appearing on television programs nationwide and performing live at rodeos and state fairs. In this episode, his daughter, Katy Clower Johnson shares her memories of the man she called Daddy. She recalls being introduced to the audience of the Grand Ole Opry at the age of three by country music legend, Roy Acuff. At the peak of his career, Clower performed over two hundred shows per year. Johnson remembers travelling with her father and how he used those trips as educational opportunities. During his twenty-seven year career, Clower amassed a large collection of memorabilia. Johnson and her mother, Homerline Clower discuss their decision to open a Jerry Clower Museum. Johnson also considers her father's legacy and how it compares to the man she knew.

Notes: RIFLE TOTING MONKEY was collected from Loyal Jones and Michael Doane Moore in 1978. Jerry Clower’s humor and stories have had widespread audiences and much of his material, like this tale, has entered the folk process. Clower’s first recording, “Jerry Clower from Yazoo City, Mississippi Talkin,” a Decca recording, was number 11 on national country album charts (see article, Knock ‘im out Jay-ree! In Sports Illustrated 38:17.pp 75-84, April 30, 1973. Clower heard the rifle toting monkey tale while in high school, perhaps from his cousin Johnny. Used by permission.

After Japan attacked the US Navy Base at Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, thousands of American teenagers volunteered to go and fight. In this episode, humorist Jerry Clower of Liberty, Mississippi, explains how growing up on a farm prepared him for life in the Navy. Raised in the rural South, Clower’s perceptions of race were limited to Black or White. He recalls an incident in basic training that opened his eyes to a wider world of ethnicity and prejudice. (caution: uses a racist word that he had never heard prior to joining up.) Clower served as a radio operator on the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet, in the Pacific Theater. He remembers the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa and the lessons they learned from each. While serving aboard the Hornet, Clower survived several attacks by Kamikazes. He describes feeling conflicted about watching the Japanese pilots die, and discusses suffering from symptoms of PTSD for many years after the war. PHOTO: courtesy of the Clower family.
