Episode 2235 – Baseball's back and so are Kid and JayBird, and they're not pulling any punches in this absolute heater of an episode. From bitching about nets at the ballpark to roasting the soulless hellspawn who keep injecting analytics and AI into the game, this one's for the purists who remember when ballplayers had mullets and umps had guts. The boys go hard on: ⚾️ The destruction of baseball's soul via nerds with iPads ⚾️ Why nets suck, fans are distracted, and Max Muncie got screwed ⚾️ The absurdity of automated strike zones and bloated bases ⚾️ Old stadium nostalgia, including the magic of Tiger Stadium ⚾️ The absolute BS that is trying to compare Babe Ruth to today's stats-juiced era But it doesn't stop at sports — oh no. JayBird shares his plans to finally go see his mystery lady, and then things get really unhinged when Kid drops a video about a guy who falls in love with his car. Like, legit wants to marry his Monte Carlo. Yes. That happened. You'll never look at your gas tank the same way again. Even more bullshit: • Rants about exit velocity and “shit nerd stats” • Remembering baseball before it got turned into a carnival • Philosophizing over generational change • Laughing at freaks who want to bang inanimate objects • JayBird's continuing relationship rollercoaster • Kid's unfiltered disdain for replay, robotic umps, and overpriced stadium food It's angry. It's brutally honest. It's Goin' Deep, baby. Host: Kid A.G. Guest: JayBird

This week on The Open Door (November 15th), panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Valerie Niemeyer discuss the art of translation, Eastern Catholicism, and the relation between Thomism and Ressourcement theology. Our special guest is Professor Matthew Minerd. He is a Ruthenian Catholic, raised Roman Catholic in a mixed American-Slavic and Appalachian cultural context in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Minerd is a husband and father, a seminary professor, and a translator. You have become, in recent years, a distinguished translator. How did this come about? Some say that to translate is to betray: Traduttore, traditore! It's a provocative charge, but could it be that where there is smoke there is fire?Is the art of translating a kind of interpretation? Does it involve compromisesYou are an Eastern Catholic and teach in an Eastern Catholic seminary, Ss. Cyril and Methodius. What do Western Catholics especially need to know about the Eastern Catholic heritage? How does it serve the Universal Church?Do you have any distinctive challenges in presenting Thomism to Eastern Catholics? How are you working to resolve the tension between Thomism and the Ressourcement of the Nouvelle Théologie?Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange has been dubbed “the sacred monster of Thomism.” Your recent translations of his books are Thomistic Common Sense: The Philosophy of Being and the Development of Doctrine, The Order of Things: The Realism of the Principle of Finality, Philosophizing in Faith, Essays on the Beginning and End of Wisdom, and The Sense of Mystery: Clarity and Obscurity in the Intellectual Life. What is your own assessment of Garrigou-Lagrange?Some speak of Jacques Maritain as the single most influential Thomist of the last century. You are active in the American Maritain Association. Where do you see the spirit of Maritain active today?Maritain was deeply engaged in the politics of his time. Does Thomism offer a foundation for constructive politics? What are some of your current projects?

Guro Hansen Helskog is a professor, author & researcher. Her work explores the philosophy of education, wisdom research, and how philosophical dialogue can be integrated into all levels of education. She is the author of “Philosophising the Dialogo Way Towards Wisdom in Education” - an in-depth book that analyses different approaches to philosophical practices and shows how we can integrate them in a holistic manner in order to facilitate everything from critical thinking to spiritual contemplation. In this episode we speak about knowledge vs wisdom, dialogos as an integration of philosophizing approaches, uprooting atheistic beliefs, mystical experiences, the wisdom famine, why children should philosophize, and integrating God into humanity.

Hello Mogpies! Welcome back to another week of diving into the mind of great philosophers through time! This week we peak behind the curtain of John Locke. He studied multiple fields and believed that all knowledge is learned through experience. And his life experience lead him to not trust the monarch and to question the blind faith of the church. He did so much to go against the common beliefs of the time that he can be looked at as one of the greatest anarchist of our time. His teachings even inspired the constitution and the creation of America as we know it. But it feels as if he does not get the credit he deserves in our history books. So sit back and enjoy another episode of us diving into a great philosopher of our time. -------------------- Please help us out and leave a rating and review on the pod-catcher of your choice. Hello Mogpies! We continue our mini series of looking to philosophers with Cato The Younger. He is an amazing human being that was able to change minds and change history through his actions. He embodies the idea of stoicism to the nth degree! Philosophers that studied and lived stoic life styles even said it was near impossible to live that lifestyle 100% of the time, but Cato proved them all wrong. And while he did not consider himself a philosopher he changed the world of philosophy, especially in the realm of stoicism, for the rest of time. This was truly one of the most interesting men we studied, so sit back and enjoy this weeks episode! -------------------- Please help us out and leave a rating and review on the pod-catcher of your choice. Hello Mogpies! We are back this week with another fascinating philosopher from ancient Greece. He was the father of cynicism, lived in a barrel, owned nothing and did what he wanted when he wanted despite how rude it might be. Diogenes is a rather interesting philosopher, he believed that philosophy should be seen through actions rather than theoretical thought. He butted heads and challenged everyone no matter their status in the world. He yelled at people in the street, spat in the face of nobles, challenged philosophers and mocked kings. He did not care what others thought of him, he had no shame and this mind set if what has given us the ideas of cynicism today. But is this the whole story? Were his words cherry picked to create a specific image of him to the masses so he will be more acceptable? And does knowing some of the other things that he argued for change our mindset of Diogenes? -------------------- Please help us out and leave a rating and review on the pod-catcher of your choice. Bible Basics w/Mike Roberts Ep263 - Philosophizing about Philanthropy - part 2
Hello Mogpies! We are excited to start a new mini series here that we have been discussing for a while now. We will be diving into some of the great philosophers of the past. Most are known for one particular thing or theory thanks to our education system, but their lives and achievements might actually counter everything we have been taught. This thought process leads us to our first philosopher, Pythagoras. His name is remembered in middle schools across the world for the pythagorean theorem, but there is so much more to him then this equation. He was a cult leader that spoke with animals and believed in reincarnation. A spiritualist that was thought to be divine and posses super human abilities. Probably the exact opposite of some might think when trying to visualize this man. So sit back and enjoy this episode as we alter your thought on the mystery man Pythagoras! -------------------- Please help us out and leave a rating and review on the pod-catcher of your choice. From its roots in the first half of the twentieth century, evangelicalism has become a powerful political force within American society. This new series—A Critique of Evangelical Christianity—explores what has gone wrong with evangelicalism as a movement, in order to point to new paths forward: both to vibrant spiritual life and the renewal of our body politic. In this first episode, we explore how hyper-individualism has infected evangelical theology, crowding out essential parts of the biblical tradition.

In this essay, Marlin reflects on topics ranging from chickens, to schooling, to church life. "Philosophizing about knowing (i.e. epistemology) may seem arcane or excessively technical. However, what increasingly strikes me is that our mindset toward knowing and the way we think about knowledge ties into our overall stance toward life. Whether or not we study formal epistemology, we all have a functional epistemology: our conception of what knowing is, our ideas about what (and who!) it is worthwhile to know, and ideas about how we can gain knowledge."
Anthony Gottlieb is a historian of ideas, the former executive editor of The Economist, the author of The Dream of Reason and The Dream of Enlightenment, and the George R.R. Martin of the history of philosophy. He tells us why he kept a poster of Wittgenstein in his dorm, how journalism forced him to unlearn the bad prose of academia, what is the quality that defines a successful philosopher, and why he thinks the liberal foundations of the West remain firm (Adaam is less certain).Find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict, and Stitcher. How does dance and philosophy intertwine as an art form? Is dance a philosophy itself? Much of dance has evolved from a performative act into the universal thought process and stream of consciousness that has shaped the world around us. Behind every text spoken is movement as a communicative language. Behind the aesthetics of dance is also humans' basic need to share and connect beyond the ring of philosophical fire that has made art what it is today.Henry Lai is a lecturer in Complementary Studies and Liberal Arts at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Prior to his current tenure, he worked at Silicon Valley for more than 10 years managing international education programmes and is a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering graduate from Purdue University, USA. Kickstarting the month of Interdisciplinarity, this episode explores the intersection between two often complex yet fulfilling topics of discussion - dance and philosophy. Good morning and welcome back! This week Zack and I are checking in at Fat Bottom Brewing, dodging storms and taking advantage of their 2-for-1 specials. Today we start the podcast talking about the "brutal truth" about getting and staying fit. Now, "fit" might be a loose term here, meaning something different depending on who you are and what your goals are, but of course we attack the question from the perspective of the extremes, and you might be surprised how we answer the question. Next, over the last year we've both incorporated new training tools and equipment that we hadn't in years past. For me, I've worked largely with minimal equipment at work, but our favorite Saturday spot, Gym 5, has a whole lot to offer, and we've both explored new (to us) machines and training tools and we talk about our experiences. And lastly, we circle back and talk a little philosophy, and how we're adding life to our moments. Grab a beer (we had plenty while recording) and enjoy!
My conversation with Deborah is continued in this episode, where we talk about our childhood church and the specific rules or ideologies that have caused us more harm than good. We talk about our growth, both mentally and spiritually, in and outside of religion, and how Deborah has flourished and found freedom through her faith, which has evolved to look different from the one we grew up with. I explain my growth and freedom outside of religion, while still holding on to important lessons and principles Jesus taught. Enjoy the episode!
