This week on It Was a Thing on TV we celebrate Thanksgiving with our annual look at past parades!   First, we go back to 1988, to see what were the big shows on Broadway, to see what TV stars would appear on floats, to see what the big gifts of 1988 were, to see what headwear Willard Scott was donning, and to see the grand ending of the parade--Santa Claus!   Then, we jump back 43 years to 1981.  What was the hotness that year?  A version of Strawberry Shortcake which was reminiscent to the technology used in Malcolm, for one.  The video game surge started, though it wasn't represented in the parade.  As you prepare to do Black Friday shopping, remember to go to the AT&T phone store and get a Garfield phone.   Follow us at all our socials via our Linktree page at linktr.ee/itwasathingontv    Timestamps 0:11 - Cold Open to Episode 515 1:39 - The 1988 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 1:01:30 - Cold Open to Episode 516 1:02:22 - The 1981 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Bush, then a Texas Oilman who had little to do with politics other than working for his Father,  and NBC News personality Willard Scott from the parade route. It was the happy culmination of years of hard work and following a winding road that had finally led George Bush to the White House on his own Then we will move on to the speech given at Texas A&M University that would lay out the strategy that Bush would follow as the world changed all around them. For on this eve of the start of his term, the world was still dominated by two Superpowers, one who stood for Freedom and capitalism, and another that believed in no freedom and and a command economy, which was failing all around the world. Here you will see the first steps toward the end of the Cold War.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

What's up, dudes? The 61st Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on November 26, 1987, in New York City, and shown to viewers live on NBC and CBS that same day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon EST, with the NBC broadcast being hosted by Willard Scott and Mary Hart. The participating celebrities included the likes of Rita Coolidge, The Oak Ridge Boys, Bobby Vinton, Phylicia Rashad, Judy Kaye and Jill Schulz. The weather for the 1987 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade proved to be picture perfect for the several thousand participants that brought the 61st "Holiday Treat for Children Everywhere" to life. The 2.1-million spectators that lined the streets took a course in balloon watching as 10 giant balloons flew above them, four of which were new - Spider-Man, Ronald McDonald, Snoopy, and Snuggle. The debutants joined the balloon versions of Garfield, Woody Woodpecker, Superman, and a myriad of other helium giants. Following the Albertville High School Aggie Band's entrance into the concrete canyons was a cavalcade of merry marchers, fantasy floats and comical clowns. The hit musical, Les Misérables, performed a number for the NBC telecast, and Rita Coolidge sang "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher" from high atop the Turkeyfloat. Jim Henson and Willard Scott were also honored with a Macy's-sanctioned Rollie Award - Henson for 11 years of Muppet participation in the Parade, with Willard's Rollie for seven years of Parade participation. Patrick Swayze trotted down Broadway on his very own Arabian stallion, and Bobby Vinton rode--or flew, rather--an airplane float from Trans World Airlines. Capping off the morning of fantasy-filled fun was Santa Claus, as always, who wished everyone a happy holiday season from his snow goose sleigh to start the 1987 holiday seasonCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! In this episode, we are taking you back to EPCOT Center and more specifically, the Norway pavilion and Maelstrom. How has been hard at work researching and also editing this episode together for your listening enjoyment. We hit on the 1988 television special, starring Willard Scott. If you have never seen this, take a minute after you listen to the episode to enjoy this: Grand Opening of Maelstrom The high seas Viking adventure was billed as a stormy boat ride with tons of excitement, danger, and thrills. Many articles were written to describe how amazing this ride was going to be and the hype machine was up and running at full speed. This really was the first thrill ride at EPCOT Center, so they played that angle as much as possible. How guides us through so many neat aspects about how this ride came to be, including the items the sponsors wanted to see on the ride. You have to remember how these early EPCOT Center rides came to be and how they were funded. This was a very different era at Walt Disney World that we all know and love, but things came to be in an entirely different way. Throughout this episode, we hit on everything from the woodwork colors, how the queue changed a bit, which imagineers actually worked on this project, and so much more. One fun fact, this ride was designed entirely on computers through CAD and no hand-drawn items were used to help create the track layout. As we get through this episode, we spend a good amount of time discussing the closure of this ride. This is one of the more recent closures of a classic attraction that can be debated for hours. Were you one of the fans that did not want to see this go? Are you happy with the replacement? We get into all of this at length, as we feel it is an important part of the history of Maelstrom. This ride truly had that 80s EPCOT Center feel that lasted into the 2000s and beyond, until Frozen was a hit. We appreciate you taking the time to listen to the history of Maelstrom and we hope you enjoyed this super detailed look at the classic EPCOT attraction.

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on an article in USA Today by David Colton remembering numerous famous people who died in 2021. Colin Powell, Tommy Lasorda, Bob Dole, Hank Aaron, Prince Philip, Rush Limbaugh—in this article there is a long list of those who had an impact in this life and have now transitioned. They continue to live—have consciousness—apart from the body. Author Anne Rice, who had “embraced the crude myth of vampires.” Larry King, who famously said, “The key to interviewing is listening.” Marcus Lamb, founder of Daystar Network, a prosperity peddler, died of COVID-19. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and F. W. De Klerk, each having won a Nobel Prize for their roles in ending apartheid in South Africa. Willard Scott, Today show weatherman—one of the most recognizable influencers of our time. As we think about those who have passed from this life to eternity, consider “Only one life, twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last” (C.T. Studd). We all will one day stand before God and give an account for what we did in our lives. Let us live our lives for that which counts for all eternity. Our Lord said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19–21). Born to a working-class family in Queens, Roker found his way into TV and then meteorology and has become one of the more prominent voices in the country on the totalizing effects of climate change. In addition to being on the Today Show, he's also the author of more than ten books, including his latest one, “You Look So Much Better in Person,” and has a new limited series podcast out called "Cooking Up a Storm", out now wherever you get your podcasts. During his time with EAW, he advanced steadily through several positions in application/customer support and product development. He also consulted on custom loudspeaker projects and conducted on-site system optimization sessions for high-profile clients. At Fulcrum, he works closely with Dave on all aspects of the product line. A native of Michigan, Rich worked as a FOH and monitor engineer with regional and touring bands in the Midwest. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the Disney Decade was in full swing, and part of it was advertising what’s new at Walt Disney World Resort. Disney parks was no stranger to “live” events from the parks. The Happy Easter Parade, Christmas Day Parade, and yes, The 4th of July Spectacular. While Disney has “live streamed” some recent 4th of July performances, it just doesn’t quite feel like the anticipation of waiting to watch the “live” fireworks on July 3rd in the 1980s. The special, like the Christmas and Easter Parades, evolved over the years; and in 1989, America’s 213th Birthday the focus was on Disney recording artists and the newly opened MGM Studios theme park. The Spectacular kicks off at Washington Square, New York, New York, or in this case, at Walt Disney World MGM Studios. Remember the Studios had just opened just two months earlier on May 1st, 1989 – New Kids on the Block are at Pleasure Island along with the Mannequin Dancers. Mickey Mouse Club Members are at the new Typhoon Lagoon Water Park; boy that footage looks familiar, almost like I’ve seen it before. Carol Channing is at Cinderella’s Castle; Jane Frisk, at the Theater of the Stars, and The Temptations in front of Oscars Service Station at MGM Studios. Disneyland has just opened the new Splash Mountain while Willard Scott and Gretchen Carlson, Miss America, host the All-American Parade at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom along with the Main Street Electrical Parade, and Sandi Patty closing out the Spectacular during the “live” fireworks performance. Happy 213th Birthday, America!!

Will Noor be able to claim that he "feared for his life"? Betty Shelby, the officer who gunned down Terrance Crutcher, will resign the police force on August 3, 2017. Jackie Bradford on Jim Vance NBC4/WRC ~ "He told me the story the other day...He said he was out at Betty Ford and one of the nurses came into him and said, 'Come here.' She took him into this room where there were stacks and stacks of letters and she said, 'Who are you?' 'Who are you?' Because he has lived his life so out loud and he's been nothing but honest with himself and with his viewers that is why he is so beloved." Jackie Bradford, President and GM NBC4/WRC (right) and Andy Ockershausen, Our Town host (left) A Ockershausen: This is Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen and I am so delighted and happy and everything to welcome our next guest here. She's not really a guest. I would describe her as a general manager's general manager. Jackie Bradford: Okay. A Ockershausen: She's actually a president and a general manager. I've known this young lady for so many years and I've seen her in action and what she's done for her company and the greater Washington area is unbelievable. She has a unbelievable relationship with her staff. It kind of reminds me of me. You've got to get close to the people and you've done that Jackie. It makes a big difference. She's actively involved with the community with the DC Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Urban League, and it goes on and on and on because she believes in involvement and it has paid off so much for Channel 4. She's the president of Channel 4, but her team has produced one of the largest health expos in the country for Our Town, or any town. She's opened 2 regional news bureaus, one's an investigative team among many other community endeavors to lead Channel 4 to continue to be the top TV station in the market. She plays a heck of a game of tennis and I'm so glad she's back in Our Town. Welcome, Jackie Bradford. Quit While We're Ahead! Jackie Bradford: Thank you Andy. Wow, we should just end there. A Ockershausen: Quit while you're ahead. Jackie Bradford: Yeah, quit while you're ahead. A Ockershausen: We're not ahead yet. I was telling Jackie, and she knew this already but there may be a lot of people in our audience that don't, WRC and WMAL were joined at the hip at one time. We were both stations of the NBC network, red and the blue. I recall growing up with them in a building with a young, smart aleck from Alexandria named Willard Scott. He was the messenger in our building for both sides. Jackie Bradford: Do you think he's going to do okay? A Ockershausen: I said he's a nutcase but he's going to do fine. But that's a relationship WMAL and WRC have. And we would use each other's talent but that was in the old days. It doesn't happen anymore. But Jackie, you were here in the financial world at one time. But you grew up ... you're a Baltimore girl. From Baltimore to Virginia and UVA Jackie Bradford: Baltimore. I left before I got that accent so I always like to say I left in the 5th grade ... A Ockershausen: Before Balmer. Jackie Bradford: Before Balmer, before it went downhill. But I graduated from Woodbridge High School, here in Virginia. A Ockershausen: Wow, I know Woodbridge very well. Jackie Bradford: Yup. And went to the University of Virginia. I'd consider that local. Wahoo-wa. A Ockershausen: Well, the high school, was it called ... did it have another name? Jackie Bradford: Nope, we were Woodbridge. . .the mighty, mighty Vikings. A Ockershausen: There's only Woodbridge High? Jackie Bradford: Yup. A Ockershausen: They had some great athletic teams, I remember reading about that. But to go to UVA is quite a feat. Jackie Bradford: Yup. A Ockershausen: Well at one time you may remember, there was a boys school and the females went to Mary Washington. Jackie Bradford: Yup. A Ockershausen: And I grew up in Northern Virginia for a while and it was a great tribute ... anybody got in school at UVA was very fortunate. Is that correct? Jackie Bradford: Very fortunate.
