Send us a textCooling treatments for equine laminitis have long been standard practice, but groundbreaking research now reveals that not all cooling methods deliver equal results. Drs. Andrew Van Eps and Sarah Ciamillo join us to discuss their study which found that distal limb immersion in ice and water dramatically outperforms other cooling techniques for equine hoof lamellae under real-world conditions.Their research addresses a critical clinical challenge: while ice water immersion has been the gold standard in experimental settings, its practical application in everyday equine practice presents significant hurdles. The weight of water columns makes movement difficult, leading many practitioners to seek alternatives like ice packs or sleeves. This study definitively demonstrates that these alternatives simply don't match the cooling effectiveness of traditional ice water immersion. What sets this research apart is its methodological approach. By measuring temperatures directly within lamellar tissue while horses moved freely in stalls, the team created truly clinically relevant conditions. The results were striking – even to researchers who anticipated ice water's superiority. "I just didn't expect there to be such a drastic difference between all the different methods," notes Dr. Sarah Ciamillo.Beyond cooling techniques, our conversation explores the frontier of laminitis research, including exciting applications of artificial intelligence for predicting which horses might develop supporting limb laminitis. The team discusses ongoing collaborations with equipment manufacturers to develop more practical cooling solutions that maintain therapeutic effectiveness. For horse owners and practitioners alike, the message is clear: when dealing with horses at high risk of laminitis or showing early clinical signs, ice water immersion should be the treatment of choice – even if that means referring to a hospital facility equipped to provide this therapy properly. This episode delivers critical insights that could change how we approach one of the most devastating conditions in equine medicine.Have you dealt with laminitis in your equine patients? Share your experiences with cooling techniques and join the conversation about this research that's transforming our approach to equine foot care.Open access AJVR article: https://doi.org/10.2460/ajvr.24.10.0291INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? When you think about our military, we go through boot camp. We put people through a lot of days and days of work to get them ready and steeled for war. But when it's time to leave the military, I think it's something like half a day of reclamation training, and it leaves a lot of veterans frustrated and unable to integrate back into society. That's why I love putting a loving spotlight on some amazing non-profits, and the the folks in the studio today are with Hooves for Heroes: Ruth Shim and Chris Alpert.

Gather round, friends, because we've got a real treat for you today! We had the pleasure of chatting with two incredible authors who are using their books to spread messages of love, acceptance, and the power of the arts. First up, we met Laura Meredith, the author of the delightful children's book "Christopher's New Home." Laura shared the heartwarming story of how she adopted a tiny, sickly lamb named Christopher and gave him a loving forever home on her little farm in Scotland. With her passion for animals and her own experiences of feeling like an outsider, Laura wove an uplifting tale about finding your place in the world. We learned that Laura's home is a veritable Noah's Ark, filled with all sorts of rescued critters - from sheep and goats to a mini Pomeranian and even a pig! She has a real gift for seeing the beauty in every creature and helping them feel safe and loved. Laura's message of acceptance and the transformative power of love really resonated with us. Next, we chatted with Bruce Weinberg, the author of "The Fabulous Feats of Mister B" series. As a former drama teacher, Bruce is a huge advocate for the arts in education. He shared how drama classes can be a haven for kids to express themselves, build confidence, and find their tribe. Bruce's latest book, "Jarobi from Nairobi," tackles themes of diversity and inclusion in a heartwarming way. Both Laura and Bruce are using their talents to create stories that inspire kindness, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us. If you're looking to add some uplifting, thought-provoking reads to your family's library, be sure to check out their books on Amazon. Lee Olsen like a lot of us just wanted to make a living in the horse industry so he started by riding some and shoeing some. He decided that he wanted to become the best at shoeing one so he put all his effort into learning and practicing his trade. He's come a long way from carrying a handful of tools around in a five gallon bucket and taking any horse he could get as now if you want him to shoe your horse you have to come to his facility. He not only has become a master at his craft but he loves helping other people find mastery too. Lee not only has an apprenticeship program for young guys wanting to get started in the industry but he also helps entrepreneurs in general. Send us a textEver wondered how a wild Mustang could transform a life? Amanda Held joins us to share her journey from the Air Force to founding H.O.O.V.E.S, an equine therapy program dedicated to healing veterans. Amanda's personal story is one of serendipity and renewal, as a chance encounter with a Mustang named Shelby helped her find renewed purpose. Listen as she recounts these pivotal moments that led her to create a program offering hope and healing to those who served.Horses have a remarkable way of mirroring our emotions without judgment, providing veterans with a space to explore vulnerability and healing. Bible Reading: Proverbs 11:25; Mark 10:42-45; Ephesians 2:8-10Dana's mom turned off the main road onto a dirt driveway. A sign next to the driveway read "Hooves and Wheels." After she parked, Dana and her friend Christie climbed out of the minivan and ran to the big gray horse barn.Mrs. Sikes, the director of the equine therapy program, met them inside. "I'm so glad you two are here! I sure could use help. Would you please groom Starr for the first class?" She pointed to a pony in a nearby stall.Christie brushed Starr's reddish coat until it looked smooth and glossy while Dana scraped dirt and stones from each of the pony's hooves with a hoof pick. Christie placed a blanket and a saddle on Starr's back and tightened the girth under the pony's belly. Dana slipped a bridle over Starr's ears and placed a metal bit into his mouth. She led Starr to the mounting block. At the bottom of a wooden ramp, a girl sat in a wheelchair. A woman stood beside her. "This is Rebecca and her mom," Mrs. Sikes told them. She turned to the mother and daughter. "Dana and Christie are two of our volunteers." Rebecca gave them a shy smile. Dana had Starr stand still beside the platform. Mrs. Sikes pushed the wheelchair up the ramp, then she and another volunteer lifted Rebecca onto Starr's back. Rebecca held onto a leather handle as Starr was led to the riding ring. Christie and another volunteer walked on either side of Rebecca as she followed the riding instructor's directions--hands up, reach for Starr's ears, touch Starr's tail. When the lesson was over, Rebecca gave Starr a big kiss. "I had a great time volunteering today," Dana told her parents at dinner. "Helping people makes me feel good."Mom smiled. "That's because God created us to love Him, and one way we do that is by loving and serving others out of the love He has shown us. Jesus died on the cross for us, and He also served people in His day-to-day life when He was on earth. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, and even washed His friends' feet.""It's only out of God's love for us that we are able to love and serve others," Dad added. That night before bed, Dana prayed. "Thank you, Jesus, for loving me first and giving me a fun way to help others!"–Bonnie CarrHow About You?Have you had the opportunity to love others by serving them? Did it make you feel good? That's no surprise--God created us to love Him and to share His love with others. Jesus showed us that love by becoming the Perfect Servant for us. He wants everyone to know His vast love, and one way we can share it with others is through service. Help others see God's great love for them by serving them like Jesus.Today's Key Verse:For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. (NLT) (Mark 10:45)Today's Key Thought:Love and serve others like Jesus
