This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we head back to Bucyrus, Kansas for the 2026 Running with the Cows Half Marathon. After a few years away from this race, we return to see how this beloved local event is holding up, and whether we could finally make peace with a course that has not always been kind to us. The morning started nearly perfect, with cool temperatures, a strong crowd, smooth race morning packet pickup, and that familiar small-town energy that makes this race special. Of course, as the sun climbed higher over the wide-open Kansas roads, things started to warm up quickly, reminding us that summer running season is right around the corner. We break down the course, the hills, the out-and-backs, the mental grind of hearing the finish line before actually getting there, and the challenge of keeping a goal pace when the day starts heating up. Along the way, we also talk about seeing familiar faces, meeting podcast listeners on course, and the community support that keeps this race feeling like more than just another half marathon. As always, Running with the Cows delivered its famous post-race spread, complete with chocolate milk, great food, and even a smoked ham donation situation that may have been the true victory of the morning. We also give an honest look at a few small hiccups, from pacing confusion to medal expectations, while still celebrating what was overall a very successful return to Bucyrus. After a harrowing and humbling trek through the swamp of sorrows in the pocket dimension created by The Living Paint, Shadar and Mina find themselves back in Berinthas where the battle is set to begin. Because where debris-strewn banks and unstable terrain block vehicles, these animals can still go. Mounted teams are working alongside an army of responders: helicopters, airboats, search dogs, drones, and cadaver dogs. It's part of one of the largest inland flood recovery operations in U.S. history. These Mounted teams are combing the Guadalupe River's rugged, debris-filled areas. They're able to reach pockets of woods, riverbanks, and ravines that rescue boats and crews couldn't access. Jay Cutler's Legal Hunt Sparks Outrage — But the Real Story Hits Different Well, it looks like former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler is in hot water—not for a bad pass, but for a perfect shot on a hunting trip in South Africa. Jay posted a photo of himself with a sable antelope he legally hunted, and the internet lost its mind. Keyboard critics called it cruel, accused him of killing a "critically endangered" species, and slammed him for everything from animal rights to ego. But here's the truth: they got the antelope wrong. Jay hunted a common sable, which is legal, ethical, and not endangered. The animal some folks are confusing it with—the giant sable—is endangered, but it only lives in central Angola, nowhere near South Africa. So yeah, the internet outrage? Pretty misinformed. And here's the kicker—hunts like Jay's actually help fund conservation. In countries like South Africa, those guided hunts pour money into habitat preservation, anti-poaching, and wildlife protection. Did Jay apologize? Nope. He doubled down, posting more pics and videos, writing: “Another great day.” And hey, if you're on the hunter's side, you know—it was a clean hunt, from  a healthy herd, and for a good cause. Randy Hankins was born in 1950, growing up in Warren, AR. Going by his stage name, Craig O'Neill has spent 50 years in the broadcast business, with the last 24 of those being at Little Rock, Arkansas's THV11. O'Neill officially signed off for the last time as news anchor on December 29, 2023. Before TV, Craig had a successful radio career on KKYK and then B98.5, where he was famous for his prank phone calls. Eventually, O'Neill made the transition from fun-loving radio personality to respected TV news anchor. Craig has since interviewed Presidents and music icon Dolly Parton alike. He has danced on the Ellen DeGeneres show, announced Razorback football games, emceed more than 9,000 charity events helping raise over $40 million dollars in Arkansas. His passion project, and probably his retirement career, is reading to grade school children through AR Kids Read. Using his acting skills, infectious personality, and unforgettable voice he hopes to ignite some lifetime readers. He also works with Hearts and Hooves — an organization that teaches children and adults with disabilities to ride and handle horses.
