Summary In this conversation, Dave Prior and Dennis Stevens explore the evolving definition of project success as outlined in PMI's recent report. They discuss the implications of this new definition, emphasizing the need for continuous transformation in organizations and the role of project managers in delivering value. The conversation also touches on the importance of reducing friction in project management, the impact of AI on the profession, and the necessity for project managers to navigate the political landscape of project success. Ultimately, they highlight the need for project managers to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and the skills required to thrive in this new landscape. Takeaways • A successful project delivers value worth the effort and expense. • Transformation is continuous, not stepwise. • Project success must include stakeholder perception and value delivery. • Project managers need to focus on reducing friction in processes. • AI will change the role of project managers significantly. • Friction is not the same as constraints; it impedes progress. • Project success should be measured by the ability to adapt and deliver value. • The role of project managers is evolving to include more strategic responsibilities. • Continuous evaluation is essential for project success. • Navigating politics is crucial for achieving project success. Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen Hey, IMPACT Driver! When it comes to Agile, it can be easy to get distracted by the methodology and terminology that comes with it (as Jesse Fewell put it in episode 210, we get so obsessed with the how, we forget about the why). The reality is that things change fast. Successful organizations cannot thrive relying on terms and prescribed frameworks alone – they must focus on adapting continuously. In this episode, I welcome my friend Christoph Hirnle, Managing Director of Meisterplan, to explore how PMOs can drive real IMPACT by anticipating what will matter, adapting plans when circumstances change, and accelerating execution - the Universal 3As of Agility. Join us for this episode to learn how PMOs (and other parts of the organization) can leverage these principles to stay ahead of the curve.
Times are weird in the land of Agile. More and more big companies are letting go of the people they've brought on to help them adopt agile practices, or replacing their Scrum Masters with Technical Program Managers, or creating a homegrown version of Agile by taking an established framework and bailing on the practices they don't like. Is this just business accepting that what they've been trying to do for the past 10+ years was just too hard, have they achieved a level of agility that they are happy with, or have they decided to place different bets on what it will take to carry them into the future? In this episode of the podcast, Jesse Fewell joins me to explore different ideas about what is happening, why it is happening, and what this means for people who've spent years trying to establish a career in agile. The conversation came about as a result of a post Jesse made on LinkedIn. He's doing research on the topic and I asked him to join me to talk through some of the ideas. If you have stories to share, he'd love to hear from you. You can find his original LinkedIn post here: https://bit.ly/3EjRUf9 Towards the end of the podcast we also discuss a question that came up in one of my CSM/CSPO Lean Coffees: If you are hired as a Scrum Master into a mostly waterfall organization that still has traditional project managers, and the engineers are trying to treat you like a secretary, how do you establish your role and the value you can provide? Welcome to the PMO Strategies Podcast + Blog, where PMO leaders become IMPACT Drivers! PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working (Technical Project Management) Hey, IMPACT Driver! Let's be honest: Agile is broken. From the recent wave of tech layoffs, the post-pandemic debate over remote vs. in-office, and DEI being pushed to the sidelines, it seems the Agile silver bullet has lost its shine lately. How do we fix this? I am thrilled to invite Agile pioneer Jesse Fewell back to the podcast this week to help answer this question. Jesse Fewell has mentored thousands of technology professionals across 14 countries to improve their teams & companies using Agile methods. He's founded several startups, contributed to three industry certifications (PMI-ACP, CST, CEC) and PMBoK 7, and has authored publications reaching over half a million readers in eleven languages. According to Jesse, the problems Agile faces today cannot be solved by simply forcing everyone back into the office. He believes that navigating the post-pandemic collaborative environment is an existential leadership challenge that places one of the twelve principles of Agile into question. Can you guess which one? Register for this year's IMPACT Summit for FREE to catch Jesse Fewell's session and learn more about the future of Agile in a remote work environment, so you can achieve remarkable project outcomes from anywhere in the world. Tune in to this week's episode to find out what's holding Agile back these days, and what we can do to fix it. Enjoy! Too many times in our profession we get it the other way around. And we go straight to a risk register, and go straight to a work breakdown structure, and forget to ask would anybody benefit from that. WENDY GROUNDS: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. I'm Wendy Grounds, and in the studio with me is Bill Yates. We are so excited to talk to you today. Our guest is Jesse Fewell, and we've had Jesse on before. He's got a lot of energy and a lot of good advice. He founded several startups, and he's contributed to three industry certifications: PMI-ACP, CST, and CEC. Jesse Fewell has mentored thousands of technology professionals across 14 countries to improve their teams and companies using agile methods. Jesse was also part of the core team writing the 7th Edition PMBOK® Guide . BILL YATES: Yeah, Jesse was putting in I can't even imagine how many hours in coming out with a new edition, especially one like this that is a big shift. And we'll get into that shift. One of the things that we'll talk about with Jesse is the principles-based approach in this 7th Edition. Just to help people get a sense for what we're talking about, I'm just going to quickly list off those 12 principles. So these are the 12 principles that are in the PMBOK® Guide 7th Edition that really drive decisions that project managers make, things like stewardship, the team, stakeholders, focusing on value, systems thinking, leadership tailoring, quality, complexity, risk, adaptability, and resiliency and change. So that gives you a sense for the principles that help drive project managers in the roles that they fill. We'll talk more with Jesse about that. That's a key shift in the 7th Edition. WENDY GROUNDS: And Bill, we also, if project managers are looking to pass their exam, we do offer some help, too, don't we. BILL YATES: Absolutely. The PMP Exam is our specialty. That's really what inspired Andy to start Velociteach back in 2002. He wanted to write a book that would help people pass an exam and achieve this goal of earning their PMP. That is a true focus of our business, helping people pass and earn the PMP, and then helping people get better at their job. WENDY GROUNDS: And you're going to get some free PDUs from listening to this podcast. Listen up at the end, and we'll tell you how to do that. Meet Jesse Hi, Jesse. Welcome to Manage This. We're really glad that you're talking with us today. JESSE FEWELL: Oh, I always love hanging out with the Velociteach people. BILL YATES: Love having you. WENDY GROUNDS: Yeah. It's been a while since we've last talked with you. What have you been up to in the meantime? JESSE FEWELL: Oh, my goodness. So we last chatted in the 2017 promotion of the PMBOK® 6th Edition. And what I've been up to since then is I've been moving further and further into the world of agile leadership...

It has been 10 years since Jesse Fewell and I became Certified Scrum Trainers. We both came to it from backgrounds deeply rooted in traditional project management. We were both PMPs, which was something like a scarlet letter in the Agile community. Ten years… things have changed. In this episode of The Reluctant Agilist, Jesse Fewell and I close out 2019 with a retrospective of sorts, looking back at how things have evolved from a time where Agile and traditional project management were considered to be opposite approaches, to a place where practitioners are starting to understand how to use both for the benefit of our customers and clients. Jesse and I also look forward and share our opinions on where things are headed and what traditional and/or agile project managers need to focus on in order to stay relevant in the job market over the coming years. Happy New Year! And thank you for listening! Jesse Fewell on Drunken PM, Dave Dame on Agile For Humans, Stephen Bungay on Boss Level, Julia Wester on SPAMCast, and Matty Stratton on Greater Than Code. I'd love for you to email me with any comments about the show or any suggestions for podcasts I might want to feature. Email podcast@thekguy.com. This episode covers the five podcast episodes I found most interesting and wanted to share links to during the two week period starting February 18, 2019. These podcast episodes may have been released much earlier, but this was the week when I started sharing links to them to my social network followers. JESSE FEWELL ON DRUNKEN PM The Drunken PM podcast featured Jesse Fewell with host Dave Prior. Dave and Jesse talked about the role of the Project Management Office (PMO) in organizations that are transitioning to Agile methods. Jesse talked about the invitation-orientation of the Agile PMO as defined in the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK) in which the PMO acts to support teams as they learn to become agile. Dave brought up that most people he has spoken to from PMOs want everyone in the organization to “do Agile” the same way, which Jesse described as management junk food. This led to a further discussion about why people want consistency and why most of their reasons are due to misunderstandings and anti-patterns like optimizing resource efficiency over flow efficiency. They also delved into some of my favorite topics: the leadership circle concept from Anderson and Adams, the competing values framework, and Carol Dweck’s ideas around fixed and growth mindsets. iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/evolving-role-pmo-in-agile-organization-catching-up/id1121124593?i=1000428696329&mt=2 Website link: http://drunkenpm.blogspot.com/2019/01/the-evolving-role-of-pmo-in-agile.html DAVE DAME ON AGILE FOR HUMANS The Agile For Humans podcast featured Dave Dame with host Ryan Ripley. Dave talked about growing up with cerebral palsy which led to a discussion about the opportunities brought about by improvements in accessibility in recent years. He talked about how a technology like Apple Pay that might seem like a relatively minor innovation to most people can be a complete game-changer for somebody with cerebral palsy as it lets them pay for something without having to trust a stranger to go into their wallet. He talked about how social media has given him a voice where in previous generations there just wouldn’t be the opportunity. Nowadays, he says, the biggest accessibility obstacles at work for him are not buildings lacking ramps and elevators, but the inaccessible nature of the company’s org charts. iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/afh-105-agile-leadership-and-management-with-dave-dame/id991671232?i=1000429122862&mt=2 Website link: https://ryanripley.com/afh-105-agile-leadership-and-management-with-dave-dame/ STEPHEN BUNGAY ON BOSS LEVEL The Boss Level podcast featured Stephen Bungay with host Sami Honkonen. This episode is a few years old, but I recently finished reading Melissa Perri’s new book The Build Trap which referenced Stephen Bungay’s book The Art Of Action and I have been reading his work non-stop ever since, which got me interested in hearing more from him. I liked what he had to say about uncertainty’s central place in strategy and its distinction from risk. He also told a compelling story about a friend of his working in strategy at a UK retailer and how he went against the traditional rollout of store layout changes to all stores at once and instead rolled out changes a few stores at a time so that he could tweak the design as he went. This is something any entrepreneur would recognize as Lean Startup thinking, but it was completely foreign to the management of this retailer. iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/stephen-bungay-and-strategy-under-uncertainty/id1041885043?i=1000376171555&mt=2 Website link: http://www.bosslevelpodcast.com/stephen-bungay-and-strategy-under-uncertainty/ MATTY STRATTON ON GREATER THAN CODE The Greater Than Code podcast featured Matty Stratton with hosts Janelle Klein, Coraline Ehmke, and Jessica Kerr. They began the discussion by having Matty summarize his REdeploy conference talk ‘Fight, Flight, or Freeze – Releasing Organizational Trauma.’ Taking the idea of incidents and outages as a form of organizational trauma, Matty talked about the importance of being able to tell stories about your incident responses and how that helps the organization process the trauma. He cited John Allspaw regarding the idea that incident postmortems should ask questions that trigger conversations rather than give answers. Janelle brought up the point that the stories we tell are sometimes lies that cover up the trauma rather than address it when the environment of the organization lacks psychological safety. This brought them to a discussion of blameless postmortems and how a culture of blamelessness is so hard to build and so easy to lose. iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/116-healing-organizational-trauma-with-matt-stratton/id1163023878?i=1000429285663&mt=2 Website link: http://www.greaterthancode.com/2019/02/06/116-healing-organizational-trauma-with-matt-stratton/ JULIA WESTER ON SPAMCAST The Software Process & Measurement podcast featured Julia Wester with host Thomas Cagley. Tom and Julia talked about the need for spectrum thinking, discussed the distinction between spectrum thinking and binary thinking, and then Julia described how she uses the Cynefin framework to identify whether or not a problem requires spectrum thinking. While this is a straightforward concept, I see binary thinking being applied all the time to address problems that require something more akin to spectrum thinking. iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/spamcast-532-spectrum-thinking-interview-julia-wester/id213024387?i=1000429098317&mt=2 Website link: http://spamcast.libsyn.com/spamcast-532-spectrum-thinking-an-interview-with-julia-wester FEEDBACK Ask questions, make comments, and let your voice be heard by emailing podcast@thekguy.com. "Consistency is the junk food of management." As 2019 gets underway the Reluctant Agilist checks in with Jesse Fewell on his primary areas of focus heading into the New Year. During this episode of the podcast Dave and Jesse discuss the current state of traditional PM vs. Agile, the role of the PMO in an Agile organization and how both of these topics have evolved since they began trying to develop programming aimed at helping PMP's move to a more Agile state. Jesse and Dave both come from a background deeply stepped in traditional project management before finding their way to Agile. Since then a large portion of their time has been spent working on helping traditional PMs find an easier path to agility and in helping to solve the great question of how the PMO can remain relevant in a traditional organization that is working through Agile transformation. ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● JESSE FEWELL NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. Every two weeks we like to come together and talk about what matters to you, whether you're a seasoned veteran in project management or a newcomer to the field. It's a chance to take a step back and try to get a fresh and objective look at the state of the industry and our role in it. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are two guys who always seem to be playing an ever-expanding role in project management, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. And Andy, it looks like you're going to be able to put on your nerd hat today. ANDY CROWE: We've got a good 'cast today. You know, I'm excited to have Jesse on the podcast, and also it surprises me that we've gone this far and not had him on. BILL YATES: That's true. ANDY CROWE: So it's long overdue. BILL YATES: Yup. NICK WALKER: Jesse Fewell is an author, he's a coach, and a trainer in the domain of innovation, collaboration, and agility. He's the founder of VirtuallyAgile.com and has been instrumental in helping project teams all over the world succeed and improve their results. He also founded the original PMI Agile Community of Practice, co-created the PMI ACP Agile Certification, and co-authored the Software Extension to the PMBOK Guide. Jesse is the world's only certified project management professional to hold the expert-level designations of Certified Scrum Trainer and Certified Collaboration Instructor. He's the author of “Can You Hear Me Now: Working With Global, Distributed, Virtual Teams.” Jesse, welcome to Manage This. JESSE FEWELL: Man, I want to meet that guy. NICK WALKER: Oh, yeah. Impressive résumé there. But I love a quotation from your website. It says, “Everywhere I go” – this is what you say. “Everywhere I go, I see breakdowns and breakthroughs, idiocy and innovation, pain and promise. I believe,” you say, “the difference between the two is leadership and whether our managers actually do it well.” All right. That might sound simple; but, if it were, I doubt if you would have to devote a career to it. JESSE FEWELL: Yeah. I say those things because it reflects what for me was a pivot point in my career, which was switching from being an individual contributor on a technology team to moving into project management. And it was a critical moment where exactly what you just happened, that there were some stupid things and some amazing things. And then I realized I could be the greatest engineer in the world, and our projects were still going to fail because of leadership issues. And so I traded my T-shirt, my programmer's T-shirt collection for the project manager's blazer and never looked back because I figured that's how I could have an impact and just amplify results, rather than – no matter how good I was as a contributor. NICK WALKER: It's more than a wardrobe change, though, I guess. Was that transition difficult? JESSE FEWELL: Well, I guess perhaps I've always been – and I think, Andy and Bill, you guys can relate to this – I've always been the achiever mode kind of person. And maybe perhaps project managers are drawn to the role because of that. And so when I made the switch, I read every book there was. And I started having one-on-ones with my team. I started setting smart goals. And I was just like, I was a little Energizer Bunny, like I'm going to be the best manager ever. Watch. ANDY CROWE: You were that guy. JESSE FEWELL: Yeah. So the transition was difficult only with respect to that, as somebody that had not yet been beaten down and embittered, I was moving a little bit too fast for a lot of the people around me. ANDY CROWE: Jesse, when I first started – to kind of date myself because I think I'm probably a few years your senior. But when I first started, Blanchard's “The One Minute Manager” was the only one of those books in pu...

In this short video, Jesse Fewell and Kim Brainard discuss their talk that they delivered at Agile2017: The PMO Paradox. The talk centers around what to do with the PMO when your organization is in the middle of an Agile initiative. Often, the answer is fire them but Jesse and Kim have a different suggestion. What if you could collaborate with the PMO in an Agile environment to ensure that they are an asset?
So today, I am excited to introduce you to Jesse Fewell from Fewell Innovation. Jesse Fewell is a writer, coach, and trainer in innovation and agile methods and has helped teams across the world deliver products faster with higher quality. Jesse recently spoke at the PMO Conference in London about The Hybrid PMO and that is our topic for discussion today. You will find a link to Jesse’s website, LinkedIn profile and other resources in the show notes at projectmanagementparadise.com/63 There is also a link to information regarding the PM Summit on October 5th in the show notes.

Jesse and I have been friends since 2008 when we both started working on trying to find ways to get PMI to pay attention to Agile. We both come from a traditional background, have been heavily involved with PMI and now make a living teaching Scrum certification classes. Jesse and I debate the answer to the PMP certification question and along the way, discuss our differing views on the value of PMI-ACP, CSM and CSPO certifications. These are things we don’t always see eye to eye on, so regardless of your viewpoint, there is sure to be something in here to help you see things from a different perspective. In this episode we talk about personal branding and being in the social media world. Our guest is Jesse Fewell.
Jesse Fewell is a writer, coach, and trainer in innovation and agile methods. He founded the PMI Agile Community of Practice, co-created the PMI ACP Agile certification, and wrote a MiniBük called “Can you hear me now? ...Working with global, distributed, virtual teams”. Agile is about compressing distance. In the past, the best way to do that was by being co-located. But that was then and this is now and companies are struggling to let go of old habits. Technology has advanced, prices have dropped, and it’s starting to make more sense to spend money on bandwidth instead of travel. For more stories, visit www.CollaborationSuperpowers.com.
