In today's world, there's a growing sense that change is happening at an unprecedented pace, and the ways that things have been done in the past may no longer serve us in the future. Successfully navigating this evolving, increasingly complex reality will require a new level of leadership, which some experts have referred to as “integral leadership.”  In Episode 187 of The MINDset Game® podcast, we dive into the concept of integral leadership with our guest, Bob Anderson. As the founder and Chief Knowledge Officer of The Leadership Circle and co-author of the books, “Mastering Leadership” and “Scaling Leadership,” Bob has been a pacesetter in the field of leadership development for over 30 years. He created The Leadership Circle Profile™, a 360-degree assessment used by organizations worldwide to measure the effectiveness of their leaders (both individually and collectively), chart a pathway for their development, and assess their progress along the way. In this week's episode, Bob discusses the following: Different stages of leadership development, beginning with reactive leadership, in which we're authored by those around us, then progressing to creative leadership, in which we shift to an internal locus of control and self-authoring process, and finally culminating in integral leadership, in which we're authored by an emergent future Characteristics that define integral leadership, and techniques that can help leaders reach this level Scientific insights that support the concept of integral leadership and the capacity to tune into a new emergent paradigm How embracing Eastern practices, including intuition and expanded consciousness, can help leaders at any level achieve higher states of awareness To learn more about Bob and access assessments and other resources, visit https://leadershipcircle.com. And they're always surprised and humbled to see how effective they truly are when we conduct a leadership assessment in the form of a 360. Women underestimate themselves and they are often underestimated in the workplace, just due to gender bias. Beliefs that people hold about women's place in the workplace, women's place in the world, and some of those things are generational and there's still a stronghold on some of those old, outdated beliefs. And women also struggle more with work life integration than men. Career planning can be a little bit more dynamic for women, just because their priorities can ebb and flow as they choose to have families and focus on different areas of their life or their work. Many of the leadership challenges are the same, but there's some gender differences that are unique to women.29:28 The advice I often give the women leaders that I work with is don't give away your power. “I have the wisdom to know that I am not for all but that I am for many, and the confidence to know that for many, I am magical” This quote is from my friend @iamtheresaasmith and really wraps up self leadership in one sentence.  When you are being your authentic self, you will naturally attract the right people who want to hear your message. The messy part can be figuring out - who is my authentic self? I believe a major key is self awareness as it leads to self leadership so we can direct that authentic self to express itself. All of this begins with mastering your inner world and learning the tools so that you can deal with the challenges that you face in any area of your life. We talk about relationships and business mainly in this episode. Part of self awareness is body awareness and Theresa shares a powerful story of uncovering what her physical ailments were telling her and her process of moving through fear to act on something that was 100% true for her. I had chills and tears in my eyes hearing this story so you will want to tune in to hear it - this episode is an investment of your time you will not regret! During this episode we discuss: Your career can be a ladder or a web  Trusting that others know the next step better than you do..what are the consequences of that? Do you have a longing that you can contribute more in life? Self leadership has its foundations in self awareness  Intention is the connecting key between body awareness and self leadership  Physical ailments are related to your inner world  Dealing with physical ailments is easier than emotional discomfort  ‘Your inner game determines your outer performance' & ‘your personal development is your professional development' Theresa's advice for those who want to become more intentional leaders in any area of your life Connecting to the rhythms and flows in your life - transitions can bring about fears of change  Theresa's vulnerable share of her coming out story Do you deal with the root cause of physical ailments even if there is a threat to your family, friends or career and risk physical ailments your whole life? Reflection is the key in adult learning  The areas for pain and love are very close in your brain - if you run from one you distance yourself from the other Theresa's Bio: Leadership Coach, Theresa Smith, combines her 20+ years of leadership experience in start-up and corporate settings, along with her skills as a Co-Active™ Coach, training in Positive Intelligence®, and certification in The Leadership Circle Profile™, to help leaders to get out of their own way and show up as their best selves, so they can create values-led, impactful change in their businesses, their careers, and their lives.  Theresa has enjoyed a successful career leading teams and organizations that include Microsoft, Olive Media, Tribal Scale and the Financial Post and National Post newspapers. In Episode 9 of the Being Human is Good For Business Podcast we talk to Trilogy Effect partners Wendy Appel, Heather Marasse and Mary Beth Sawicki about New Year's Resolutions.Initially, we set out to learn about 2021's top priorities for leaders, but quickly shifted focus. Listen and learn how you can now finally stop striving to be your best self, and instead just relax into being the fabulous person you already are.   A great place to begin is to discover your Enneagram type. It's a framework that describes nine different, fundamental worldviews and their associated patterns of behavior. “When a leader gets a little overwhelmed, they often tend to revert to old habits,” explains leadership development expert Heather Marasse. “The Enneagram provides you the means to see the patterning in your internal landscape and supports you in choosing different and more effective ways to respond and behave.”Next, try completing the free Leadership Circle Profile online. This can set the stage for your year by identifying where you want to focus your development and growth efforts. The Leadership Circle Profile is benchmarked against more than 10,000 global leader assessments to evaluate how you go about achieving results, bringing out the best in others and how much you act with integrity and courage. It will also reveal if you are overly cautious and where you may have self-limiting habits that impede your leadership effectiveness. “Our clients find using the Leadership Circle Profile to be hugely enlightening and insightful,” says leadership coach Wendy Appel. “It allows them to see gaps and alignment between how they see themselves and how their teams actually experience working with them.”Once you've taken the initial steps with the Leadership Circle Profile and Enneagram framework, you'll have a solid foundation for your ongoing leadership development. Now you need to make a commitment to pursuing it.   “You don't need a self-improvement plan or a fix-it plan,” says executive coach Mary Beth Sawicki. “Because you're not broken. Taking on your development is a hero's journey. It requires compassion for yourself and for the process.”This journey will help you learn more about who you are, what you want, where you want to spend your time and energy, and what you want to focus your efforts on. In short, you'll have more agency over your work and your life. Learn more by listening to the show.  Here are links to the some of the tools mentioned in the show and other resources to support you in your commitment to your ongoing development as a leader:The Leadership Circle Profile (Free)Enneagram Typing CardsHow to use the Enneagram better to become a leader (Free)Brené Brown On The Power of Vulnerability (Free)InsideOut Enneagram: The Game Changing Guide for LeadersThe Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-DiscoveryMastering Leadership: An Integrated Framework for Breakthrough Performance and Extraordinary Business ResultsThe Enneagram in Love and Work9 Types of LeadershipTrilogy Effect Blog (Free)Please subscribe to the Being Human Is Good for Business Podcast on iTunes, Amazon, Google Podcasts, iHeart Radio and Spotify (links below) or wherever you get your podcasts. We recorded this call on February 21st, 2020. The date is significant because the coronavirus had not yet reached pandemic status and there were no detected cases of community spread in the US. We don’t speak at all of the crisis in our interview and listening today it seems a bit tone-deaf. As you listen, I invite you to place the conversation in the context of the incredibly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous [VUCA] environment we’re living in.Throughout the conversation, Bob talks about practices he personally engages in to deepen his own development. I’ve taken the liberty to document my version of those and I’ve provided a link to them in the episode notes and on my website at www.rise-leaders.com/podcast. We spend most of our time in this interview on the Creative and Reactive dimensions of the model and on the latest findings gathered from a database of write-in comments provided when leaders rate other leaders. Bob and Bill Adams’ latest book, Scaling Leadership, is based on this provocative data. Bob reviews the Top 10 Most-Endorsed Strengths for High Creative Leaders from this research (hint: people, people, people). He shares his own examples of moving from a Reactive to Creative style of leadership and the deep reflection and stillness that is required to speak with authenticity and in a way that uses conflict generatively.Links:Full Circle GroupBob KeganSocialized and Self-Authoring mindsetsCoveyMastering Leadership

Love the podcast? Join the conversation! Don't miss out on this free webinar series, Design Your Work.  This week’s show reflects on what it means to lead with purpose and alignment. Sharon discusses the differences between creative and reactive leadership borrowing from a favorite 360 tool (The Leadership Circle Profile). She also notices the pull to the proactive vs. reactive framing and why she prefers the creative/reactive interplay. We then get into how to tell and own your own story before moving into reflection on a) reactive tendencies to be aware of and b) reflection questions to help you amplify your own creative leadership. This a a great episode for anyone looking to lead with authenticity and impact. Ideas Shared 5 Questions to Reflect on your Creative Leadership What does my creative leadership look like? When I am at my best how am I showing up?What is my purpose? What are my values? How do I take actions aligned with my values, purpose and talents? When I'm leading with authenticity/integrity/vision, what does that look like? When I'm interacting with others in a positive, results-oriented way, what does that look like? What reactive tendencies get in my way? Does imposter syndrome influence my behaviors? Do I go along to get along? Do I tightly control things because I'm afraid of things falling apart if I don't? What's the quality of my listening/engagement? How much empathy am I holding for those around me? What would support me in amplifying my creative leadership? What will help me get there? What will help me radiate? What prepares me for that? What allows me to move into that with ease? What is the cost of my reactive tendencies? What's lost when I react? What's the cost to myself? To others? What's one thing I can do this week to support my creative leadership?
