Send us a textTen years ago, long before the podcast, 20 year old sprint sensation Jodie Williams did an interview for our old blog Jody and Bayo's Athletics Spectacular. It was at the very beginning of her senior career and she could not have started it off in an more auspicious way, ending the season with both European and Commonwealth medals. But all good things must come to and end, so it seems fitting that she should sit down with us again, a decade later, as a she announces her retirement, to chat about her inspirational legacy and leaving on a high with an Olympic Bronze medal. The British women's spring scene had been transformed since 2014 much of which can be attributed to Jodie's trailblazing legacy. We wish her all the best in her future coffee and 'frolicking' adventures.  Please enjoy, please subscribe and please let us know what you think on all our socials. In this episode, we sprint into the life of Jodie Williams, a 3x Olympian from Great Britain, beginning with her early days as an unstoppable young athlete. Jodie recalls her first taste of victory, winning races at school sports days and even being pitted against older boys in a heptathlon when “no one could beat me.” That moment fueled a drive that would guide her to track and field, where she quickly became a standout. That said, her journey to the Olympics wasn't without setbacks. She reflects on the heartbreak of missing the London Olympics due to a torn hamstring and feeling overwhelmed in her first Olympic experience in Rio. But by Tokyo, she had found a new mindset: “I just looked up... there was no crowd, but I felt at peace. I thought, 'Wow, I've done it.'” Jodie opens up about the highs and lows of pursuing her dream, describing how fear has been ever-present: “Fear is a huge part of it… if you're dreaming that big, there's going to be a lot of fear involved. That's part of the journey.” Learning to manage her inner dialogue, she says, has been essential, as she's worked to “make friends” with her inner critic and celebrate each small victory. Jodie shares how wherever you are in your journey, she wants you to stop to congratulate yourself today. "Say, 'Good job for getting out of bed, for getting dressed,' because sometimes, that's the biggest achievement of the day." Beyond her athletic career, Jodie founded the Listen Journal, a platform for women to share their stories authentically. She's also found a passion for coffee, seeing it as a way to build community and raise awareness around its history. --------------- Flame Bearers is a multi-platform media movement illuminating the stories of our world's best women athletes. An athlete since early childhood, Jodie shares how her innate ability to run earned her immediate success in the world of competitive sports. After nearly 150 back to back wins, Jodie experienced her first set of challenges that ultimately helped her gain new insights on who she was as a person and what is truly important. . . “You start to realize, it's really about what you can give to other people. To me, that is what success looks like. How many people can I bring up? How many doors can I open on my way up? How can I pour back into communities and areas that poured so much into me? For me, that was the biggest shift. I used to chase metals and success. Now I stand up there and I'm so thankful for all the people that sacrificed something to help get me here.”Topics Covered:The journey of becoming a professional athleteNavigating the successes and challenges that come with the sporting journeyHow challenges reshaped her career, identity and self-worthThe power and importance of supportive friendships and communityHow she became interested and involved in the coffee industryWhat inspired her to create Listen JournalGuest Info:Jodie's InstagramListen Journal InstagramGet in Touch:Benshen.co WebsiteBenshen MembershipBenshen.co InstagramRate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Because, as is often the case, they were frustrated that what they were looking for didn't exist, and they knew there was a demand. They also wanted to create something that was more in line with their own lifestyles and that reflected their personal values and culture. So many lessons and words of wisdom in our conversation, and plenty of encouragement to take the entrepreneurial leap and follow your passion. As they say ‘Life's too short not to give it a go.'We discussed the importance of finding great mentors and advisers  - and why getting on a business accelerator or growth programme was such an important part of their success. They explained why niching down and becoming known as the ‘go-to experts' for a specific sector is essential and why most entrepreneurs struggle with that as they see shiny new opportunities everywhere that they have to say ‘no' to - trust me I can relate to that one!And the underlying secret of their success, which is all about the people and the culture in their business  - easy to say, hard to do— which is why their advice is so helpful if you're building your own business. You are going to get so much out of this conversation. 2 Timothy 2:5 I wonder if you remember that agonising moment in the 2022 Commonwealth Games when our amazing 4x400m women's relay team was disqualified. It was all the more painful because they seemed to have won the race. They gave a confident and delighted interview straight after their success, only to learn that Jodie Williams and Victoria Ohuruogu had stepped out of lane on the second leg of the relay. Their smiles of rejoicing quickly turned to tears of distress. It was all terribly sad to watch, but the fact is that they had infringed the rules. As hard as it may be, there have to be rules in every sport - and that has always been the case. The metaphor of the soldier that we looked at yesterday was drawn from Roman life. However, the metaphor of the athlete was definitely drawn from Greek life. The Greeks had established their games at Olympia in the 8th Century BC and conducted them for the next 800 years. They had elaborate rules which governed every part of the games, including the preparation for them. Olympic athletes had to state on oath that they had completed the necessary ten months of training before the contest. Paul wanted Timothy to be clear that running the Christian race had rules that needed to be observed. He couldn't live his ministry in the way that suited only himself; he needed to live a highly disciplined life. Only in that way could he serve the Lord faithfully. There is something in all of us that recoils at the idea of obeying rules. We like to do things our own way. But we can be sure that the rules God gives to us are ones that ensure our liberty, and which enable us to find true contentment and fulfilment in life. QUESTIONS What are the key rules that govern your life? PRAYER Lord Jesus, give me your strength to live by the loving rules that you have laid down. Amen

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times' wrote Charles Dickens, but this canonical line could well have been penned by Georgia Nicholson, Lady Bird, or any other coming-of-age protagonist. Adolescence is tough enough without international selection, age group championships, and the expectation of massively-invested athletics' fans to contend with. Being a prodigious youngster is no easy feat: just look at Jodie Williams, who had to compete with the moniker of 'Moneylegs', or the many US collegiate athletes who've buckled beneath gruelling schedules and meteoric ascents into the track and field spotlight. There are pitfalls aplenty, and it's a perilous transition to navigate. That said, it can be an exhilarating journey, if you remain healthy and happy, and your progress well managed. Wunderkids Jakob Ingebrigsten and Mondo Duplantis blew our minds in Berlin. Niamh Emerson PBs for fun, and seems as unbothered by competing against seniors as Jody and Bayo are by the fact they can't remember their own Twitter handle two years into this podcast. NCAA athletes routinely post times and marks which would not only win British Champs, but break national records in most countries. Imagine having all the promise of Imani-Lara Lansiquot, or of Katelyn Tuohy. Emerging stars are thrilling prospects.A double-edged sword, then, and one we loved discussing in this week's 'Young Guns' special (cue the 'Wham' soundtrack...). Listen out for our three guests - each major talents in their own right - who shed a lot of light on what it's like to *be* a Team GB junior with very real potential on the senior global stage. Why not burst into tears on national television and leap upon Jeanette Kwakye upon learning you've broken a Championship Record? We adored it. The long jump was also sensational, and the entire thing a doozy - something we HADN'T expected to say of the Athletics World Cup. And, yet - once Bayo had been dragged (kicking and screaming) from the football - all three of us loved it. It's a short one this week, but one teeming with positivity: this season's been a proper corker already. PS - rate, review, and subscribe. @BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas.

It is no secret that historically there have been more men working in antitrust than women, but the proportions have shifted as more and more women are taking on leadership roles in antitrust. In this Special Report, host Jodie Williams discusses issues pertinent to women who practice antitrust law with Tiana Russell, Kristen Anderson, and Lisa Phelan. Together, they talk about how office diversity has increased, what opportunities government roles can offer women, and how the new administration will impact women in antitrust. They also share their stories and advice for young women looking to get involved. Kristen Anderson is a partner at the firm Scott & Scott. She represents corporations, entrepreneurs, pension funds, institutional investors, and individuals that face commercial disputes in antitrust. Lisa M.
