It's been a long time coming, but Foothills Stadium is finally being torn down. The home of the Calgary Cardinals, Expos, Cannons, Outlaws, Vipers, Bucks, Dinos and Dawgs (who later moved to Okotoks) has been the planned site for the city's new fieldhouse project for years. With a blast of warm February weather, three excavators started tearing down the stands, dugouts and guts of the former Burns Stadium. Joe McFarland and Ian Wilson discuss their thoughts on the past and future of the site as well as baseball in Calgary. Ian also shares an interview he did with former Cannons owner Russ Parker, who happened to be snapping photos of the tear-down when Ian made his first visit to the site.
It started as a simple question our Joe McFarland posted on Twitter/X shortly after Nathan Flewelling (Innisfail) picked up the Home Run Derby crown at the Canadian Futures Showcase and Simon Baker (Cochrane) at the Canadian Futures Showcase: does Alberta punch above its weight when it comes to baseball in Canada? It elicited a number of replies, DMs and texts, leading him write an opinion piece for our website and to expand on his thoughts on this episode of the podcast. We're also joined by long-time Canadian baseball coach and influencer John Milton, who provides some context to what he saw in Ontario and what he thinks needs to happen for Alberta to enter the conversation as a powerhouse in Canada.
That's it. That's all. See ya later, 2021! It was definitely a time. We have now arrived at the season finale of Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast. It's a chance for us to reminisce about the last 12 months and look ahead at what the next 12 might have in store. Co-founders Ian Wilson and Joe McFarland chat about their memories of the last year, favourite stories to tell, and give a sneak-peek into what's coming in 2022.

Once again, welcome to the weekend wrap-up of Calgary Today. This weekend's episode is called COVID Clips, and that's because the segments that have been chosen are snapshots, or clips, of the world we live in at this very moment. These clips show the humanitarian in all of us and have been compiled as reminder of how we can, and should, come together in times of fear and chaos. Take a look in Joe McFarland's scrap book from this week and you'll see clips of: Joe speaking to Leduc area farmer Kim Ducherer about the effect big business is having on the agriculture industry in Canada during the pandemic. Former WHL player & Co-founder of Mountain Life Apparel Brock Montgomery, explains how a hockey player becomes a clothing retailer with his brother, and turns that into a venture celebrating and clothing front line workers. Calgary Community Ethnic Support Society Chief Executive Officer Dr. Josephine Tsang, shows how broadening the scope from just helping people adjust, to helping seniors eat, is the simple change in perspective needed to do something great. President of Alberta Garment Manufacturing Adrian Bussoli, giving us a look into the company that's contracted to supply Calgary's city workers with equipment. With Joe digging deeper and asking how they got in the business of making cloth face masks. Co-Founders of The Helping Alberta Initiative Breanne Everett & Melissa LaMothe, give scope to the task of connecting personal protective equipment with those who need it in the province. These are the snapshots or "clips" of the good that we are all capable of, hopefully one day when we look back on the scrapbook of our history we can remember it as the time when we came together in the name of community. Stay safe and make good choices. This is the Calgary Today Podcast.

A chaotic week unfurled before us in Calgary, the 2020 Calgary Stampede was cancelled after months of deliberation and in some ways it feels like the rest of the summer was cancelled with it. Welcome to another weekly wrap-up of Calgary Today! This weeks episode was labeled "COVID Creativity" not just because it fits the naming convention, but because of the ingenuity and creativity shown in the solutions found to many of the pandemic's brand new problems. Whether that problem is understanding how we can bring communities together and help each other succeed. (Former Calgary MLA and Municipal Affairs Minister, turned author Doug Griffiths) How do businesses go above and beyond to create that same sense of community especially with younger citizens? (Comic Traders Employee/ Part-Time Superhero Kelly Adlard) Or how can a city like Calgary experience moments of pure togetherness like the singing on balconies in Italy? (Vintage Group President & CEO Lance Hurtubise) What about finding a mutually beneficial way to help students getting volunteer experience while connecting with isolated seniors? (CBE Teacher Jamie Andersen) How can we document everything that is happening around us in these brand new times in a new and interesting way? (Graphic Recorder for The Sprawl Sam Hester) And what about the seniors who have been isolated in the scary continuing care facilities? How do we get their minds of the world before them? (Executive Director of Journey Club at Westman Village Al Boileau) Regardless of the questions, Joe McFarland is looking for creative solutions. Whenever and wherever he finds them, he'll be sure to share them with you. This is The Calgary Today Weekly Podcast. We

Staying with Alberta ... the NDP government filed a "bizarre" lawsuit this week against power companies, including utilities which are owned, or partly owned by the cities of Calgary and Edmonton in order to stop the companies from backing out of power contracts which have been made less profitable by Alberta's increased carbon costs (taxes, closing of coal powered power generation). The lawsuit names the province's own regulatory agency, the Alberta Utilities Commission for "unlawfully" agreeing in 2000 to terms which allow termination of so-called Power Purchase Arrangements "if a change in law renders the PPA unprofitable, or more unprofitable." Basically, the NDP government is suing its own agency and power companies for reacting to provincial regulations which drive up the price of power and reduce profits. Could this lead toward the situation which exists in the U.K. where thousands of elderly and poor are dying annually because they cannot afford the increasing price of electricity. It's projected that by 2030, 100,000 people in the U.K. will die of being cold because they cannot afford electricity. It's already been a crisis in an Ontario community in the Winter of 2014.
