As spring unfolds across Wisconsin, mushroom enthusiasts and farmers alike are buzzing with excitement over what promises to be an exceptional season for morel mushrooms. The combination of timely rainfall and late spring snowfalls has set the stage for a bountiful harvest. That's according to morel mushroom buyer Tom Nondorf. "With the rainfall and weather we've been having, it's really helped keep the mushroom crop going,” Nondorf says. "But the late snowfalls in spring are especially beneficial. Over the years, I've noticed that the more snow we get in late spring, the better off the mushroom crop is for the year." Nondorf has been closely monitoring this season's progress and is optimistic about the outlook. "I've been buying mushrooms for over 14 years, and I can confidently say that this year is shaping up to be one of the best in recent years.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode we look back on March '24. Here is what Jenkins ahd to say about the episode:"Spring has unfurled its green fingers in our backyard, and we're buzzing to bring you the latest from our slice of paradise! Morgan and Taylor here, with a big hello to our friends from far-flung places as we celebrate the season's enchanting firsts. Imagine stumbling upon the year's first morel mushroom during a hike, or witnessing Huntsville's dogwoods bursting into bloom – these are just a few of the joys we're sharing. From the robust growth of our potatoes and peas to safeguarding our tender tomato plants from the last of the frost's sting, our garden is a microcosm of life's little victories and the resilience we've cultivated along with our veggies. As the chatter of birds fills the air, we can't help but dream out loud about our future orchard, a slice of Eden we're mapping out with a cottage-like charm. It's an orchard that's a little wild, a little planned, and every bit as enchanting as a childhood memory – speaking of which, we've got to tell you about Wilder's first popsicle! It's the simple pleasures, like crafting homemade strawberry lemonade popsicles, that add a dash of sweetness to our days. We navigate the whimsy of DIY treats and revel in the frugality of making our own, proving that the best things in life aren't just free – sometimes, they're homegrown. Each May, we Wisconsinites scour the woods for a seasonal delicacy: the morel mushroom. Discovering a flush of them can feel like finding hidden treasure. They can fetch $50 per pound at your local farmers' market, but are free to pick in state parks and forests - if you can find them. So where do you look? “Everywhere and nowhere,” according to Melissa Klotka, President of the Wisconsin Mycological Society. But don't worry, she's got tips for you. Check out their upcoming mushroom-hunting forays.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Getting Your Eyes On, published by LoganStrohl on May 2, 2023 on LessWrong. The first phase of naturalism is about identifying crucial experiences that you want to study in greater depth. It's a lot like preparing slides for observation under a microscope. This second phase, “Getting Your Eyes On”, is about heightening your awareness of those crucial experiences. It's like getting your subject in focus by watching carefully while turning the adjustment knobs. What does it mean to “get your eyes on?” I grew up in Southern Indiana, on a farm with many acres of forest. Every spring, as soon as the May apples popped up, I'd go morel hunting with my family. Morels are brown wrinkly mushrooms that look very much like the forest floor, so hunting for them is a bit like playing Where's Waldo, except that Waldo's on a brown and green background, wearing brown. But there's a trick to it. You start out moving quickly, scanning the ground for your first mushroom. Then, when you finally see it, you don't harvest it right away. Instead, you squat down and watch it for a full minute. Mushroom hunters call this technique “getting your eyes on”. What I imagine is happening is that you're training your perceptual systems to consider this particular arrangement of little grayish-brown wrinkles as “foreground”, rather than “background”. Your brain thinks that if you stare at something with full attention for a shockingly long time, it must be important. “Hey, eyes, this isn't just another bit of deciduous detritus. It's important. It's salient. It's the main thing I care about today.” Like mushrooms, fulcrum experiences tend to blend in with the background. Before you train yourself to pay attention to them, they mostly just seem like another fleeting mundane experience in a forest of fleeting mundane experiences. They're hard to study, because they're practically invisible. In naturalism, “getting your eyes on” is the process of shifting a fulcrum experience into the foreground of your life. It's a practice that takes a previously ho-hum experience and makes it stand out, so that you notice when it happens and thereby gain the opportunity to observe it on purpose. How To Get Your Eyes On Start by setting out to notice your fulcrum experience just one time. You've probably noticed it before, as part of “Identifying Fulcrum Experiences”; but this time, you'll have a slightly different goal when you notice: your goal this time will be to observe the experience closely while it happens. For a day, or a week, try to set a small part of your attention to watching all of your experiences, as though scanning the ground for mushrooms. When you finally recognize something that looks like it might be what you're after, slow way down in whatever you were doing (if you can), and pay a lot of attention to whatever is going on for you. Phenomenological Photography I think of this special kind of focused observation as “phenomenological photography”. Your goal is to take a “snapshot” of your immediate experience in a particular moment. Here's how it works. When you make a painting, you choose precisely which visual elements to capture, and which to leave out. But when you take a photograph with an ordinary camera, your camera doesn't know what your subject is. You may have aimed the lens at a squirrel, intending to photograph a squirrel, but you also captured the texture of the bark it's standing on, the shape of the leaves, and the color of the sky. A camera has no concept of a squirrel. The shutter opens, light is recorded, and that is all. To take a phenomenological snapshot, make yourself like a camera. Use your guesses about how your fulcrum experience will feel to aim and focus the lens, but then click to take a picture of everything in the frame. The shutter opens, and no matter what you'd plan...

It's hard to beat a beautiful spring morning in the Wisconsin Driftless! The turkeys are gobbling, the fish are biting, and the morels are popping! But even the most beautiful weather days in picturesque terrain can be a grind. In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles of Good Chance Fly Fishing about their recent romp through Wisconsin's Driftless area. While they were hoping to get a couple of longbeards on the ground, a sack full of morels, and sore arms from fighting fish, the day didn't go exactly as planned. There was not a morel in sight and the gobblers were simply not interested in playing the game. But Josh and Pierce still had a blast and found redemption as they closed the day hauling in hungry Browns on a stereotypical Driftless cow pasture stream. Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. makes big beer in small batches What do you talk about when you get one of America's most legendary breweries on your show. Mushroom hunting, of course. As we chatted with Toppling Goliath Brewing Co.'s founder Clark Lewey and brewmaster Mike Saboe before the show we discovered we shared a love of mushrooms. We want to hunt morels, and they're experienced morel hunters. They love them so much they even brewed a beer in honor of morels, Scorpius Morchella. We promise the whole show isn't mushroom talk, but for a beer show there is a hell of a lot. Hang in there with us, we'll get to the beer soon enough. Toppling Goliath has some pretty major accolades. They're the 2021 US Beer Open Grand National Champions and Beer Advocate ranked them the #2 brewery in the world. Their Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout has held the #1 highest rated beer spot on Untappd since 2015. Clark and Mike say the high praise keeps them on their toes and they always strive to keep up their high standards. We sampled a couple of their brews, including Strawberry Shortcake Fandango, which is stellar. This leads us into lactose talk (there's no lactose in the Fandango) and ponder if it's the MSG of beer, as well as discussing another MSG-like contender, Phantasm powder. Stouts and Stouts and Stouts With beastly stouts like Assassin, Mornin' Delight, and the sought after Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout we talk... stouts. What goes into making a beer like this? Brewing, aging, blending. We talk secondary beer market, where a 2014 bottle of KBBS can cost up to $1,300. If you want the more affordable version get your name in the hat for a ticket to the release, where a single 12 oz. bottle will cost you $100. Not all Toppling Goliath stouts will cost you a C-note. Their Rover Truck is an easy-drinking Oatmeal Stout that you can grab for around $10 for a 16 oz. 4-pack. Now that's a deal. We haven't tried the KBBS yet, but we've got plans to get back on with the TG Brews crew for an online tasting. Until then, I'll keep trying to invite myself to bottle shares for a taste. On this week's SciFiles, your hosts Chelsie and Daniel interview Alassane Sow. Alassane is an undergraduate researcher working in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics currently working on germinating symbiotic and parasitic fungi in the order Pezizalies. They are also a part of a nationwide project that focuses on creating a way to consistently grow Morels outdoors and in high tunnels. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. On today's episode, we chat with Michael Hunter, a chef, hunter, forager, and the co-owner of Antler Kitchen & Bar, a restaurant that specializes in cooking and serving game species in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I chat with Michael about how writing and publishing “The Hunter Chef Cookbook” inspired him to open his own restaurant and he shares some ideas about cooking a couple favourite species. On the conservation segment, we revisit the Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) Conservation Initiative and discuss a recent scientific paper that evaluated Y2Y's success in contributing to biodiversity conservation targets.
