Charles Feltman: The Thin Book of Trust Charles Feltman is the founder of Insight Coaching. He has over 25 years of professional experience coaching, facilitating, consulting to, and training people who lead others. He is the author of The Thin Book of Trust: An Essential Primer for Building Trust at Work*. It's a reality of life that we need to interact with some people we'd rather not. And it's absolutely a reality of leadership, that sometimes we need to have a conversation with someone we don't quite trust. In this episode, Charles and I explore how to prepare so it goes better for both parties. Key Points The four assessment domains of trust include care, sincerity, reliability, and competence. Seven steps to prepare for a conversation: Identify the assessment(s) you are concerned with. Define the standard you are using. Identify the specific actions or behaviors that have led to your assessment of distrust. Consider what you are doing that may be contributing to the situation. Determine what you need from them in order for them to regain your trust. Decide if you are willing to talk to the person about it. Ask the other person if they would be willing to have a conversation with you. How many times have you asked yourself, “what's my purpose”?  If you're like most of us, probably too many times to count.  As we get older, the question seems to get a little louder.  Today's guests on the Run Your Life Podcast are just the dynamic duo you need to provide you with proactive, intentional tools to help you along that journey.  Charles Feltman and Ila Edgar are both executive and leadership coaches offering a distinctive twist on finding your purpose and creating meaning in your personal and professional life.   They achieve this through Charles' trademarked model described in his book, The Thin Book of Trust and their growing podcast, Trust on Purpose. In today's episode, expect to hear many things that are sure to provide you with a fresh perspective that you probably haven't considered before.  This fresh perspective allows you to look at your current situation differently and thus move you in the right direction.  Both readily admit they don't have all the answers and they are by no means perfect.  They are human just like the rest of us.  What they have is experience, expertise, empathy, and the courage to confront!Mind shifting truths to listen for in today's episode:1.     Trust is foundationalWhen your team or family is built upon trust, you will outperform your wildest dreams and performance objectives.2.     Boundaries and self-expression are okayMany of us learn from our families of origin to suppress feelings, not express our needs, or not set boundaries.  Charles and Ila help us realize that all of this is okay and is vital in establishing trust in our homes and workplaces.3.     Life knocksWhen we fail to do what's mentioned above, it can have damaging repercussions later in life.  Learn how to develop resiliency and better manage adversity when it occurs.4.     WAIT“Why Am I Talking?”  We all have heard that the “good Lord gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason”.  However, using Charles' WAIT model is the master's level for listening.5.     You DO have a choiceOftentimes in life we tell ourselves we don't have a choice.  Charles fundamentally disagrees and believes you can unleash incredible personal power by simply recognizing that you always have a choice.6.     Perception is reality.  But is it really?Ila stresses that we need to withhold our personal judgements when we interact with our world.  Or examine why we are judging and how we got there.  Many times, it's not what people are doing to us, it's simply how they are behaving that is worth exploring more.  7.     Who we are is how we leadSelf-awareness and authenticity are keys to great leadership.  We as humans, all bring our own unique life experiences to everything we do.  Those who excel as leaders recognize this and invest great amounts of time and effort in better understanding that so they can maximize their own effectiveness as well as the effectiveness of those around them.  Find more at LinkedIn:Charles FeltmanIda EdgarPlease be sure to subscribe to my Run Your Life podcast, much appreciated.

Season 5, Episode 1: This season, Diplomatic Immunity is exploring the depths of multilateralism to learn how consensus-driven diplomacy survives in an era of renewed great power competition. For the first episode, ISD Director of Research and Programs Kelly McFarland talked to two experts with experience at the United Nations. First, Kelly chatted with ISD alumni Alistair Somerville to walk through the history of the 77-year-old institution.  Alistair Somerville is a staff assistant at the UN Secretariat's office in Washington, the UN Information Centre, where he coordinates the Secretariat's work with academic institutions, think tanks, and the media in Washington and around the United States.  To dig deeper into the issues affecting the United Nations today, Kelly talked to Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman who has served as a high-ranking diplomat with both the United States and the United Nations. Ambassador Feltman explains why he has been pleasantly surprised by the UN's efforts in light of the war in Ukraine and is cautiously optimistic about the future of the institution.  Jeffrey Feltman is the John C. Whitehead Visiting Fellow in International Diplomacy in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings and a Senior Fellow at the UN Foundation, both based in Washington, D.C.   Ambassador Feltman was appointed as the first U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, a position he held from April 2021 until January 2022.  From July 2012 until his April 2018 retirement, he served as United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.  From 2009 until 2012, Ambassador Feltman was the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.  Prior to his 2004-2008 tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, he served as a U.S. diplomat in Erbil, Baghdad, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tunis, Amman, Budapest, and Port-au-Prince. Episode recorded: October 10, 2022 (interview with Alistair Somerville) and November 30, 2022 (Interview with Ambassador Feltman) Produced by Daniel Henderson and Kelly McFarland.  Episode Image: Flags at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Reading and literacy are important life skills. But many boys struggle with reading and writing -- and resist parents' and teachers' well-intended efforts to help them. Lots of boys are reluctant readers. Many hate writing. Teaching boys to read Middle school literacy instructional coach Todd Feltman says, "reading has to be taught in increments," especially for young boys who typically come into schools with a developmentally appropriate preference for play and movement. Boys, he says, "shouldn't be forced to learn how to read. It should be a gradual process" that started with phonemic awareness and includes frequent exposure to high interest, culturally relevant books that align with boys' pre-existing interests. To help middle school boys, teachers and parents must first understand boys' lived experience, including their previous experiences with reading and writing. "We have to help find reading material that will interest our boys - and model what pleasurable reading looks like," Feltman says. Audiobooks and podcasts can also support boys' literacy development. "Audiobooks and podcasts are wonderful because they give boys a chance to visualize," Feltman says. "They can also help boys develop fluency." (Another plus: Boys can be active while developing their vocabulary & comprehension skills!) Also helpful: book clubs for boys. (Wanna know more? Check out How & Why to Start a Boys' Book Club.) Teaching boys to write Supporting boys as they learn to read will also aid in the development of boys' writing skills. "Weak readers tend to be weak writers," Feltman says. Letting boys draw and discuss their ideas before asking (or requiring) them to write a story or report is helpful. You can also encourage boys to use to voice-to-text apps to dictate stories if handwriting or keyboarding is difficult for them. With minimal effort, you can build boys reading and literacy skills AND have fun. In this episode, Jen, Janet, & Todd discuss: Whether expecting 5 and 6-yr old boys to read is developmentally appropriate Reading as a multi-faceted experience The role of role-modeling in literacy development How parents can build boys' literacy skills while buffering school expectations Incorporating movement & literacy Using audiobooks, podcasts, & book clubs to support boys' literacy development Supporting boys' writing development Easy ways to build boys reading and literacy skills How to find boy-friendly books The value of family reading time Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: toddfeltman.com -- Todd's website How (& Why) to Start a Boys' Book Club -- ON BOYS episode Secret Saturdays, by Torrey Maldonado -- great book for boys, recommended by Todd at 16:18 Diper Overlode (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 17), by Jeff Kinney -- great book for boys, recommended by Todd at 16:58 The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick -- great (big!) book for reluctant readers (includes lots of engaging illustrations) Wonder, by R.J. Charles Feltman joins me on my podcast today for a second time. Our first conversation in March 2022 took a deep dive into his book The Thin Book® of Trust: An Essential Primer for Building Trust at Work. In that conversation we unpacked the 4 assessment domains that he outlines in his book and why understanding these domains is necessary for leaders to increase team cohesion and effectiveness. The four assessment domains revolve deeply around the themes of care, sincerity, reliability and competence. Our conversation today can be looked at as a part 2 to that original chat back in March, but much more hands on as Charles provides us with real examples of what great leadership looks like in action and how the best leaders learn to navigate important discussions to not only build deep trust, but also create the conditions for high performance in their organization. Charles provides deep insight through his life lessons learned having worked in the arena of trust-building for more than three decades. Through the years Charles has partnered with client companies to design and deliver custom leadership development programs that are unique to each client's needs, culture and goals. These programs are all designed around the fundamental idea that organizations are networks of conversations, and the more effective leaders are at having the right conversations with the right people, at the right times, and in the right ways, the more successful their organizations will be.The inspiring author and speaker, Brene Brown, has had Charles on her own podcast and widely shares the fact that she has used his definitions of trust and distrust in every book she has written because these definitions are practical and actionable while at the same time deep and meaningful. It was an honor to have Charles back on my podcast. Wherever you are in the world listening to this, I hope you find lots of value in my discussion with Charles today.  About CharlesCharles Feltman has over 25 years of professional experience coaching, facilitating, consulting to, and training people who lead others. The Thin Book of Trust an Essential Primer for Building Trust at Work  Introduction: Charles Feltman is the founder of Insight Coaching based in California where his work concentrates on two main areas: Coaching Individuals and Teams and developing Leadership Team & Leadership Development Programs. Charles completed his coach training program with Newfield in Colorado. He holds a BA in Psychology from U.C. Santa Barbara and a Master's in organisation development & communication from the University of Southern California. Charles is also an author. He has written a book on Trust called The Thin Book of Trust ; an essential primer for building trust at work.        Podcast Episode Summary Charles Feltman illuminates the four distinctions of Trust that comprises his framework, working with Leaders, Teams and Individuals. The episode discusses how trust is eroded, the many strategies that are deployed on teams and in organisations when trust is absent and how to rebuild trust effectively.  Points made over the episode Charles discovered the subject of Trust early on in his college years when he was often asked to mediate issues on campus So many issues he entertained at work had something to do with Trust.  When he launched his own Consulting and Coaching Business clients often came with issues where trust was often problematic.  His coach training program at Newfield introduced him to 3 distinctions of Trust; Sincerity, Reliability and Competence and even then he felt something was missing Charles stumbled on the academic literature pertaining to trust and there he found the term “benevolence” He added Care as his final distinction for his framework on Trust  People often fail to understand that Trust is an assessment related to our standards with respect to behaviour.  People often fail to communicate their standards for behaviour and immediately assume the other as untrustworthy. Communication is missing  We tend to operate with an on/off switch when it comes to determining whether someone is trustworthy.  Sometimes we are in the land of gradation with Trust and we are suspicious of its absence. Then we tend to look for all the ways our suspicion can be confirmed. This is called confirmation bias  “Trust is defined as choosing to risk making something you value vulnerable to another person's actions” Charles Feltman Trust is behaviour laden. The Academic World had a very complicated definition that Charles made more accessible  “We are never so vulnerable then when we trust someone and paradoxically if we cannot trust neither can we find love or Joy”  Walter Anderson  Love and Joy should be part of everyone's work life and it is the reason Charles works in the arena of Trust  Often the work of Coaching is helping a client be vulnerable to themselves  Wise Trust is choosing to make a wise risk assessment to trust – knowing that an on/off switch does not hold much wisdom   The Four Distinctions of Trust  Care: Is the assessment you have my interest at heart or at the very least we have shared interests and when we care like this we are free to work easily with each other. The most important behaviour associated with care is listening.  Sincerity: Is the assessment you are honest and integral in your actions. Every interaction is an opportunity to build or damage trust. The assessment of sincerity is that I trust your intentions and know that you are open and honest with me not simply in terms of your logic but emotionally as well Reliability: Is the assessment that I can trust your commitments. I can trust the strength of your commitment. Reliability is the domain that is often most problematic on teams  Competence: Is the assessment that you have the capacity, skill and knowledge to do what you say you will do. This domain has a lot to do with standards and getting really clear on our respective standards often limits the speed by which we race to mistrust.    We often collapse the four distinctions of trust and simply rush to mistrust.  Whilst there is a huge degree of interdependence between the four distinctions it is helpful to take them apart first to really become familiar with the distinctions Distrust is often talked about more on teams than trust. Teams need to have the conversations about trust  If teams engage in trust conversations to understand the difference between assessments and assertions mileage can be made  If the Leader is deemed the person who is creating distrust on the Team, Charles will coach the leader before he works with the team  Trust is a precondition for Psychological safety and for belonging.  Working through a complex issue requires of teams to be uncomfortable but if the team doesn't feel safe it will likely not show up fully and engage in strategies for protection, strategies like resistance, avoiding, arguing, ignoring or direct attack  As a Leader and member on a team is important to become aware. Notice if we are engaging in confirmation bias.  Distrust uses the same brain structure, circuitry, biochemistry associated with the Fight/Flight/Freeze patterns. As human we have to learn to manage our knee Jerk reactive patterns  Curiously both networks, The Trust Network and Distrust Network in the brain can operate simultaneously. By paying attention we can deploy wise trust  Remember Trust is a two way street. It is not an off/on switch. It can be built and rebuilt through intentional conversations.    The Resources shared  The Thin Book of Trust: an essential primer for building trust at work available at www.landtoninfo.co.uk

This podcast refers to the, “The Words of Jesus” book, as recorded in the Authorized, King James Version of the Holy Bible. Arranged and chronicled by Gilbert James Brett; Edited by Melbourne I. Feltman, PhD; Comprising the words of Jesus with authoritative adaptations of the Bible text of which they are a part; Consolidated Book Publishers, 153 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago; Copyright 1943 – the John A. Dickson Publishing Co. For your reference and convenience, each podcast episode will include the chapter text from the book which is referenced in the specific episode.  It is useful to recall that in the days Jesus ministered in the flesh, the Scriptures were not readily available to the general public; indeed literacy was not a common attribute.  Scriptures were copied with diligence by the Essenes.  The Scriptures were read in the Synagogues. The abundance of Bibles in our day has diminished the value placed on the Scriptures.  The record of the gospel and its wide availability came at a great cost. Check out the end of the lives of those involved in this endeavor.  Most were martyred for their trouble.  We should consider why they were willing to pay such a price to make the Scriptures available for us today.  They are a gift from God.   ***  Chapter 7: JESUS' WORDS TO NICODEMUS One night a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus and said: "Master, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him." Jesus answered: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, 'Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Perplexed by the answer, Nicodemus asked: "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus replied: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, 'Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God'. That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, 'Ye must be born again.' The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth. So is everyone that is born of the Spirit.'" Nicodemus asked: "How can these things be?" Jesus answered: "Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, 'We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.' If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to Heaven, but he that came down from Heaven, even the Son of man which is in Heaven. "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. "He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."
