When you think baseball in Central Alberta, one family name is synonymous with the game: Northcott. And while he may too humble to admit it, Harold Northcott is an Alberta baseball legend. The Clive, Alberta native had a storied playing career which took him to Eastern Oregon University, where he helped the Mountaineers set team records for wins in each of his three seasons. That's where he also earned the nickname “The Giant Killer” for becoming the first pitcher in school history to beat two games against big PAC-10 teams. Northcott went on to represent Canada on the international stage a number of times, including being named the most valuable Canadian at the 1985 Intercontinental Cup. He started his coaching career in 1988, helping guide numerous teams in St. Paul, Rocky Mountain House and elsewhere to provincial titles. He's also served as the Canadian National Youth Team pitching coach in the 1990s, which featured names like Jordan Zimmermann, Ryan Dempster and Eric Gagne, then coached with the National Senior Team at the Pan Am Games amongst others. His wife, Barb, is heavily involved in the game, and all three of his kids – Dustin, Chad and Heidi – all blazed their own trails in baseball. Recently, a little birdy by the name of Brad Mills told us that his long-time friend was being inducted into the EOU Athletics Hall of Fame this month. As it turns out, the recognition was a long time coming, as was this great conversation I had with Harold Northcott last week.
Pete Medhurst was in for Reese Waters today and shared his thoughts on Jordan Zimmermann, who was a big part of the early success of baseball in DC.
Jordan Zimmermann pitched 13 seasons in the major leagues, establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball during part of that span. But before he took the mound in Washington D.C, Zimmermann started here in Central Wisconsin at Auburndale and UWSP. In part two of discussing Zimmermann's career in our area, Matt Infield talks with Zimmermann's high school coach at Auburndale, Mark Brost. He talked about seeing Zimmermann's talent in elementary school and how he turned from a catcher to a pitcher in his days at Auburndale.

Co-hosts David Gasper and Matt Carroll are joined this week by ESPN La Crosse's John Pappadapoulos. The episode is broken down into two sections, one about the good news and one about the bad news. The good news segment goes first and discusses the return and dominance of Corbin Burnes, the development of Freddy Peralta, the rotation as a whole, Christian Yelich and many others going on rehab assignments, and the expansion of the seating capacity at American Family Field. The Bad News segment starts around the 29:00 mark and goes over the Brewers struggles hitting the ball, especially with runners in scoring position, the lack of a right handed power bat, a Keston Hiura update, the lack of run support for the rotation, the need for a bat at the Trade Deadline, as well as the departures of Jacob Nottingham and Jordan Zimmermann. It's a fun and informative episode this week. Enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome to the Inside Heater podcast! We are two baseball fans by the names of Sutton and Elijah embarking on the journey of bringing you up to speed on baseball news, history, takes and series recaps. Our goal is to stay family-friendly (as much as possible) to connect generations and grow the game that we both love. We want our listeners to be able to listen to a podcast where parents can just throw it on in the car and hope that their love of the game will rub off on their children as well. On this episode, we discuss how the new baseballs are impacting the offensive output across MLB. We talk about how over the years, we have been seeing increasing velocity and lack of command which lead to a disturbing trend. We talk about the legacy of Albert Pujols as it seems his career is winding down. We discuss Todd Frazier's designated for assignment and how much he impacted the game. We also talk about the retirement of Jordan Zimmermann. We then begin to close out by recapping the big weekend series and Elijah's experience at the crazy Saturday Night game between the Braves and Phillies. We close with our discussion about proper etiquette when attending baseball games. Whether, it is good morning, good afternoon, or goodnight when you are listening, thank you for tuning in.
