The voice you'll hear at the top of this Overdrive Radio edition is that of Overdrive's February Trucker of the Month Kenny Wingate. Clearly, he knows of what he speaks when he invokes the feeling -- "nothing like it," he said -- that he associates with best of trucking as an owner-operator, running your own game when times are good. It's part of what drove him to take the leap back from company work he was doing to launch his Southpoint Exchange businss with one truck and his own authority in 2019. He's up to two trucks today, headquartered in Auburndale, Florida: https://www.overdriveonline.com/trucker-of-the-year/article/15738560/how-truckings-supposed-to-be-done-meet-kenny-wingate He's the proud owner of two sharp Peterbilt 579s and stainless reefers, and he's been focused throughout the company's relatively short six-year history on business brass tacks, building a team around him for freight with regular brokers, many of whom he's known going back decades. Likewise on the accounting, bookkeeping and general business management side of Southpoint Exchange, and he's set up for further growth after a lifetime spent trucking, as you'll hear in the podcast. He's 55 years young today and relishes that long history in the business, though many of the men he learned from, and some of those he came up with in trucking, have passed on. Magnanimous in manner, clearly on top of his game as a business owner, Wingate is also nothing if not grateful for all the help of those who came before him. He told the story of a recent encounter of an old friend at a dock. "Our generation is starting to be few and far between ... The other day I run across a gentleman I probably hadn't seen in 25 years, and we trucked together," Wingate said. "We sat down on an old wooden bench at the back of our trailers while we were getting loaded" remembering all those who came before but also "we just laughed, man, and just cut the fool, and it felt good. It felt good to see somebody that you trucked with years ago, you know, when when things were a little different." At once, most of the folks the two men asked each other about were gone, he said, or at the very least off the road for good for health or other reasons. Wingate, 55, stays grateful for his own longevity, and looks ahead to the future and opportunities to build better business with Southpoint Exchange. In the podcast, hear that perspective but also just how two-truck Southpoint Exchange is getting the work done with dedicated freight on lanes between Florida and Northern Ohio. After being nominated by one of his customers, he's officially in the running for our 2025 Trucker of the Year award, which you can enter yourself or nominate another owner via https://overdriveonline.com/toptrucker

A 17-year-old Florida teen, previously cleared in the fatal shooting of his father after claiming self-defense, is now accused of stabbing his mother to death—and newly released police bodycam footage reveals chilling comments he made about not wanting to become a “murderer.” In the video, captured in November 2023 by a Charlotte County Sheriff's Office deputy and released by local Fox affiliate WFTX, Collin Griffith can be heard telling his grandmother that during an argument with his mother, Catherine Griffith, 39, he said, “I'm not a murderer” and “I'm not a psychopath.” “I'm just trying to peacefully leave or peacefully coexist,” Collin tells his grandmother in the recording. “She kept telling me to shut up and shut up, and when I wouldn't shut up, she hit me.” At the time, Collin was sitting in the back of a patrol car, having been arrested for domestic violence. He described feeling trapped in a “constant state of fight or flight” and acknowledged fears he might lash out at his mother: “If I think she's going to do something, even if she's not, I might act,” he said. “I'm not going to, like, go crazy or anything. But I'm not sure, honestly.” Asked whether he was unsure about hurting his mother, he replied, “Only if she tries to hurt me.” Less than a year after that exchange, Collin allegedly killed Catherine on Sept. 8 in a 55-and-over community in Auburndale, about 50 miles east of Tampa—where his grandmother resides and where the November video was originally filmed. Authorities say he called 911 afterward, claiming his mother “fell on a knife” following a “very long fight.” Police found her stabbed multiple times in the neck, injuries that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described as “not reasonable or plausible” to have been accidental. “The medical examiner said it's just not reasonable or plausible that she died the way that he said she did,” Judd explained. “It just didn't happen.” Collin is now charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond in the Polk County Jail. Investigators have requested that prosecutors charge him as an adult. According to officials, this was not the teen's first deadly encounter with a parent. In February 2023, Collin allegedly killed his father in Oklahoma, yet no charges were brought after he successfully claimed self-defense. When deputies arrested him in connection with his mother's death, Judd says he appeared “calm, cool, collected” and showed “zero remorse,” telling officers, “I know my rights. I want an attorney.” Collin's grandmother can be heard in the bodycam video describing his resistance to living with his mother: “Collin did not want to come back home,” she told the deputy. “He said, ‘No, I want foster care' … You have issues you need to work on.” Authorities say Collin previously pushed his mother to the ground and stomped on her after she revoked his video game privileges, an incident that led to an arrest and failed self-defense claim. In an earlier episode, he was involuntarily committed for making a threatening statement: “I'll kill myself, or I'll kill my mother by shooting or stabbing her,” according to police. Collin's case now moves forward in the Florida courts, where he faces the possibility of being tried as an adult for first-degree murder. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the 2024 Indian Motorcycles lineup. The Indian Motorcycle company hosted a media event in Southern California a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, we didn't get an invite but we have learned a few things since then. For the FTR, Scout, Springfield, and Chief the updates pretty much only consist of color and graphics. With that said, India released two new colors; Sunset Red Metallic and Sunset Red Smoke. A new model for 2024 is the FTR X 100% R CARBON. This was a collaboration with 100%, known mostly for riding goggles. This is a limited edition creation with only 400 units released worldwide. This new FTR sports Ohlins suspension, blue carbon fiber body parts, and Akrapovic exhaust. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE An Indian Motorcycle representative had this to say about the Scout lineup at the media event: "It's [2023] been an interesting year. It's a turbulent industry right now. You've probably seen earning reports from our brand and some of the other competitors in the space. We're navigating that really well. What's been cool to see for Indian specifically is our market share performance. A couple of weeks ago we had market share leadership in the mid-size category. That is our Scout lineup, for the first time and that is really cool to see. Leading with the Scout lineup, but we're going to focus on other lineups here today, but that continues to be a great performer for our brand. And that's bringing people into the Indian Motorcycle family and over time they're graduating into our other vehicles. So playing the long game there is working out nicely for us and it's good to see the response." CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Indian Motorcycles released a new audio upgrade they call Powerband. It is coming on the Elite models with what they call the bass boost tune. It has a 9-band equalizer, pre-tuned settings, ride command integration, and underglow speaker lighting. The speakers are rated at 100 watts as compared to the normal 50-watt speakers. Indian claims there is 50% more bass with this new system. On September 13, 1983, Delbert Baker was found dead – shot and with his throat slashed – in Auburndale, FL. Witnesses gave the police a lead on two suspects but they quickly dismissed it since one of the suspects was working as a police informant. A few months later, after a $5,000 reward was offered for information, another individual came forward and said that Juan Roberto Melendez was responsible. This person was known to dislike Juan, and on more than one occasion declared that he would “get” Juan. At trial, this individual's testimony was the primary evidence against Juan, and despite a solid alibi and the complete lack of inculpatory physical evidence, Juan was convicted and sentenced to death. Over a decade later, a transcribed confession of one of the original suspects was re-discovered, in which he took responsibility for the murder, and declared Juan's innocence. Gilbert King talks to Juan Robert Melendez and Linda McDermott, Juan's attorney.
