They're back from the grave and ready to party… again. The cult classic ‘The Return of the Living Dead' has been highly revered by horror fans for almost four decades. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary next year, DRagon Studios now presents a new feature film from The Return of the Living Dead Universe titled, ‘Trash's Revenge'. Trash, an iconic character made famous by Linnea Quigley, the iconic 80's scream queen known for her roles in ‘Night of the Demons', ‘Creepozoids', and ‘Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers', is back. If that wasn't exciting enough, joining Linnea Quigley are original cast members Beverly Randolph, Thom Mathews, John Philbin, Drew Deighan, and Miguel Nunez. The project will also feature the talents of composer Francis Haines and makeup artist Tony Gardner. It's all very exciting and very much needed when you consider the mess the franchise ended up in with poor sequel after poor sequel. Alas, as of the time of this interview, those involved in trying to make Trash's Revenge a reality has discovered that, according to a statement put out, a company called Living Dead Media had illegitimately claimed copyright ownership and had been profiting from The Return of the Living Dead for the last 10 years without paying any royalties to the cast. This has resulted in the campaign being temporarily halted while this issue is sorted out. Trash's Revenge is not going away, we just need to be patient. This issue is something we discuss in this interview with Linnea, while also digging into the guts of Trash's Revenge, talking about the iconic original film, and even touching upon other areas of Linnea's incredible career to date. Once the campaign is live, fans and supporters can help make it a reality, here. The original cast and their drive to recoup what is rightfully theirs can be supported here. John Philbin's best-known movie parts were in Children of the Corn, Tombstone, Point Break and, of course, The North Shore - that classic 1980s film about an Arizona wave pooler who goes to Hawaii. In this podcast, John talks about how he landed the role of Turtle (hint: he had to audition 7 times) and the movie's lasting effect on a generation. As a core surfer he's also well-placed to measure changes to surfing and the “life” many have sacrificed so much to be a part of and speak to how wave pools, surfing and their overall perception have shifted within popular culture. “You don't you don't have to be a bum to be a surfer anymore. I was telling my friends that you can be rich and be a surfer. It's a thing that's happened. The game is out man, but it used to be like, “yeah, I'm going to sacrifice everything in my life for this feeling of riding energy in the water.” And that's what it used to be like when I was a kid. You used to have to be a lifeguard or a firefighter to be a surfer. Now, you can put in hours and be a CEO of a company and be a surfer. You look at Mark Zuckerberg or someone and you're like, fuck, you know? Are you kidding me? Yeah. The richest man in the world, what he really wants to do is ride a wave because he's discovered what we've known all along.”

Writer and producer, Cynthia Posner, took off for Mexico during the pandemic to get out of the fast pace Los Angeles life. Undateable John starring Estella Warren and John Philbin (EP. 62 on this podcast), is a romantic comedy that flew under the radar in 2019. We loved Cyn's dialogue and wit, so we scheduled a screening coming up on February 2, 2024, with John Philbin in attendance. John Philbin's blossoming acting career was self-admittedly sabotaged by a disease called surfing. He'd lock down a role in a movie like Point Break as Nathaniel and then disappear to G-Land, missing key auditions for other roles and scoring insane Indo perfection. The Turtle we know from North Shore would do nothing different. His craft is fully intact; Undateable John (2019) is a display of his evolving, robust talent and comedic timing. What a way to open 2024 with our man, John Philbin, on the podcast. He'll be at the festival February 2-3, 2024. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
"North Shore," released in 1987, is a film that encapsulates the essence of surfing culture and the timeless quest for belonging and self-discovery. Set against the stunning backdrop of Hawaii's legendary North Shore, the movie follows the journey of Rick Kane (played by Matt Adler), a young surfer from Arizona, as he navigates the challenging waves and complex social dynamics of the surfing world. The film opens in the arid deserts of Arizona, a stark contrast to the lush landscapes of Hawaii. Rick Kane, fresh from winning a local surfing contest in a wave pool, decides to use his prize money to travel to the North Shore of Oahu, the mecca of surfing. His naivety and landlocked upbringing are immediately apparent upon his arrival, making him an easy target for local surfers who view him as an outsider. One of the film's strengths lies in its portrayal of the clash between local and outsider cultures, a theme still relevant today. The tension between respecting local customs and the universal passion for surfing is a central conflict in the movie. This is exemplified in the interactions between Rick and the local surfers, particularly with the character of Vince (played by Gerry Lopez), a respected surfer who embodies the spirit and skill of the local surfing community. The cinematography of "North Shore" is another highlight, capturing the raw beauty and power of the ocean. The surfing scenes are shot with an authenticity that appeals to both surfers and non-surfers alike. These scenes are not just visually stunning; they are pivotal in advancing the narrative, showcasing Rick's progression from a naive wave pool surfer to a skilled ocean surfer. However, the film is not without its flaws. The script sometimes lapses into clichés, and the acting, particularly in the more dramatic scenes, can feel forced. The character development, especially for the supporting cast, is often surface-level, missing opportunities to delve deeper into their backstories and motivations.Despite these shortcomings, "North Shore" benefits immensely from its supporting characters. Turtle, played by John Philbin, is a standout, providing comic relief and a sense of grounded wisdom. His friendship with Rick serves as a bridge between the outsider and the local community, illustrating the universal language of surfing. Furthermore, the romantic subplot between Rick and Kiani (played by Nia Peeples) adds an extra layer to the story, although it follows a predictable trajectory. The film also touches on the commercialization of surfing, a prescient issue in the surfing community. The character of Chandler, portrayed by Gregory Harrison, embodies the soul surfer who rejects the commercial aspects of the sport. His mentorship of Rick is central to the film's message about the purity of surfing and the importance of respecting the ocean and local traditions."North Shore" culminates in the final surfing competition, a well-executed sequence that blends real surfing footage with the film's narrative. This climax not only serves as a test of Rick's skills but also as a resolution to the cultural tensions depicted throughout the movie. The competition scenes are gripping and well-choreographed, keeping viewers engaged until the very end.In terms of cultural impact, "North Shore" has become a cult classic among surfers. It captures a particular moment in surfing history, just before the sport exploded into mainstream consciousness. The film's depiction of surfing culture, with its emphasis on respect, skill, and connection to nature, resonates with many in the surfing community. In conclusion, "North Shore" is a film that, despite its flaws, remains an important cultural artifact within the surfing world. Its depiction of the surfing lifestyle, combined with the beautiful cinematography and engaging surfing sequences, makes it a must-watch for enthusiasts of the sport. While it may not delve deeply into character development or avoid certain clichés, its core message about respect, passion, and self-discovery transcends these limitations, making it a memorable and influential film in the genre of sports cinema. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
In keeping with its fellow '70s and '80s horror movies, The Return of the Living Dead (1985) delivers a classic tale about an official governmental goof — which makes for some interesting timing considering that it's set right around the Fourth of July. This week on Spooky Tuesday, we decided to celebrate the holiday and the anniversary of the film's (totally true, just peep that title card) events in one fell swoop. On our latest episode, we're keeping the party time (zombie version) going as we enjoy this flick's killer soundtrack, discuss potential throuples, and get into a serious debate about who exactly is the dumbest of the dumb bitches. On this episode we chat with John Philbin! You may know John from some of the movies he's starred in including Point Break, Tombstone, Return of the Living Dead or Children of the Corn among others, but he's probably most notably recognized for his role as Turtle in the iconic surf movie, North Shore. As someone who's seen North Shore dozens and dozens of times, I was so excited and honored to get to know more about his life on and off screen. John was gracious, friendly and accomodating and I can't express how appreciative I am that he took the time to hang out with me for the podcast. My very favorite horror film of all time is Return Of The Living Dead. The film takes horror and humor and takes the viewer on a ride seldom found in any other movie. Also all the cast members come together and each piece fits like a jigsaw puzzle. I was lucky enough to talk with several members of the cast and crew over the past couple of months for this very special podcast. Linnea Quigley and Beverly Randloph were guests at the Scarefest in Lexington Ky last month. I interviewed them that weekend. The rest of the interviews with producition designer William Stout, Brian Peck, Alan Trautman and John Philbin were done at Frank N Con in El Paso TX. While at this convention I also spoke with Dianah Cancer who is the lead singer of 45 Grave. Their song Do You Want To Party from the film has became the rock and roll horror anthem. This show also features Mike Perez who was involved with the new More Brains documentary on Return Of The Living Dead. Please join me as I talk with the stars from this amazing movie!!
My guests are: actor JOHN PHILBIN ("North Shore") and directors MICHAEL POLISH and MARK POLISH ("The Astronaut Farmer"). To hear this show: http://www.latalkradio.com/Sheena.php For more info: http://www.sheenametalexperience.com
