This week, Chris and Rachel interview Jordyn Zimmerman, an autistic nonspeaking adult who was featured in the documentary “This is Not About Me.” This is Not About Me covers Jordyn's journey trying to be included in school and to get access to robust AAC. Jordyn shares about the challenges with an education system that can segregate disabled students without giving them equal opportunities, the problems with “gatekeepers” withholding robust AAC from students, the impact of limiting beliefs, and more! Before the interview, Chris and Rachel connect with Michaela Ball, the Audio Engineer of Talking with Tech. Michaela shares about how she got connected with the podcast and why she reached out to help several years ago. Chris, Rachel, and Michaela discuss some of their thoughts about Jordan Zimmerman's documentary, This is Not About Me https://thisisnotaboutme.film/ and talk about the importance of giving AAC users the time they need to finish communicating. Chris and Rachel challenge listeners to wait for Jordyn to respond in this episode rather than fast forwarding as a way to practice giving an AAC user the wait time they need. Key Ideas this Week:

Jordan Zimmerman joins me on the podcast today. Jordan and I met when she was working at the education department of Murray's cheese. She has had an inspiring journey, from Texas, to being the second woman to graduate college in her family (Yale University, no big deal!), to the reality of pursuing her passion. For Jordan, that passion lives in the food and beverage industry. She is honest and real about her love for the industry but also the difficulties she has faced along the way. In recent years, she has dived into a career in spirits, specifically whiskey, and has now landed in an exciting new role at Brown Forman. I can't wait for you to listen to the whole episode and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
If you're a runner, especially an ultra runner, you love to run. Each of us have our own reason for WHY. And for most of us, that is more complicated than we can explain in only a few words. But there are other endurance challenges out there other than running. My guest this week, Jordan Zimmerman, is an ultra runner who also enjoys kayaking. He's done the MR350, a race from Kansas City to St. Louis on the Missouri river. I've had several "trail talks" with Jordan as we've run together in person. I'm excited to have him here to share a conversation here on Trail Talk as well.
Gloria is a widow and we talk about her son and grandchildren moving back into the home. Gloria has a Real Estate Licence and is reinventing herself, but there are challenges along the way.We also speak about “Phishing” of fake male profiles on the Internet. She is also a contributor to Chocolate Chip Cookies by Roy Miller and Co-Authored by LaurieAnn Campbell . We are really excited to have Gloria as a part of this book! What a beautiful lady and she really explains this as it is. And we love that it’s real. We hope you appreciate her message. To that, appreciation, and feeling like you are “in the way” in your own home, but loving so much?We love our children coming back home, but there are challenges. Finding your own time and space can be difficult no matter how much we love them. Sharing is not always easy. Nick Garcia is one of the most intriguing prospects in this year's upcoming Major League Baseball draft. He spent his freshman year on the Chapman Panther baseball team as the club's third baseman. As a sophomore he switched to the mound and a pro prospect was born. With tremendous poise, a driven work ethic and an upper 90's fastball he is one of the highest rated amateur athletes eligible for this year's draft. Projections put him in the top 60-70s players overall which could make him one of the highest drafted DIII player ever joining MLB All Stars Billy Wagner who was selected 12th overall in 1993 and 2007 second round pick Jordan Zimmerman. The numbers he put up on the mound at Chapman were phenomenal. Over the past two seasons he amassed 83 innings and only allowed 48 hits with 118 strikeouts. His ERA was a teeny tiny 1.08. The knock against Nick is that those numbers were put up against lesser competition. Nevertheless, Garcia isn’t completely barren of big game experience. He helped the Panthers to the DIII baseball title in 2019 and pitched in the Cape Cod League last summer where held his own against the ilk of players from nation. He’s proved that he doesn’t discriminate against DIII batters. If you’re a division one he has no problem striking you out either.
