Is this the big move of the Cardinals' offseason? This morning the Cardinals announced the signing of Sonny Gray! Gray finished second in the 2023 American League Cy Young voting and will likely headline the Cardinals rotation in 2024. After months of rumors and discussions about the rotation, Sonny Gray is finally a St. Louis Cardinal. It's not an Ohtani party, but it's surely a Sonny Gray party! We're thrilled about this signing, but what happens next? Will the Cardinals still target Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, or will they move to trades? Rumors of Tyler O'Neill and Dylan Carlson have already heated up and both could bring back good pitching returns. As we continue our ode to the 30 years of the Vs. tour this November, we're stopping at a show that's known for both what happened during the concert, and then what happened in the aftermath. The show is an unforgettable night from this tour highlighted by a very early rendition of Crazy Mary in which original songwriter, Victoria Williams, joins them to play guitar and sing, and long-time Pearl Jam producer, Brendan O'Brien, is called upon to play the B3. It's a moment that's etched in history, but perhaps gets overshadowed by the events that took place the following night. After a dispute with a fan in a New Orleans bar, Eddie Vedder was arrested for public drunkenness and disturbing the peace after spitting in the man's face. We'll take the early portion of the episode to discuss about the incident as we'll invite the 1993 American League Cy Young award winner, Jack McDowell, onto the show, who was there during the occurrence. We'll talk to Jack about his relationship with Eddie and how they met through their ex-wives, how Pearl Jam got his band V.I.E.W. bumped off a gig at CBGB's, how he and Ed convinced TV reporters that Ed was a White Sox call-up, and of course the New Orleans situation. Get to hear what he thought of the whole ordeal and how his night ended up after getting into it with the friend of the agitator that Ed had to deal with. There was only so much time that we had to share of his interview in this episode, but check out Patreon this week for the director's cut of the interview featuring stories about his band's V.I.E.W. and stickfigure, Pearl Jam's relationship with baseball and his current frustrations with baseball analytics that he likes to write songs about. As for the show, there are excellent performances that we'll get to dig into from Why Go, Footsteps, Porch, Rats, Blood and of course, Crazy Mary. We'll also discuss Release being an OTOTO Daughter tag and a wild sequence that featured Ed singing lyrics from Michael Jackson song "Ben" into a fierce, unrelenting rendition of Blood. Our Gear Guru segments this week will focus on some of the slide guitar features of Rats, and of course, the contrast of this version of Crazy Mary compared to what we know of it now. The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0 behind a strong pitching performance by American League Cy Young frontrunner Gerrit Cole, who pitched a two-hit, complete game in the Rogers Centre to finish his 2023 season with a 2.63 ERA. It's the time a Yankees pitcher has led the American League in ERA since Rudy May in 1980. And on the offensive side, Aaron Judge had another two home-run performance in Toronto (he also had an infamous one in May) to help lead the Yankees to victory. It is interesting that the two best players on the team combined forces to get a big win to get the Yankees to 81 wins, which guarantees at least a .500 season. It also guarantees a season series win over the Blue Jays. Then, they discuss Bob Klapisch's article about the Yankees ‘audit that will be happening in the offseason. (link is down below) The Yankees have hired an outside company to audit their processes—everything from trades to international draft picks, scouting, and the minor leagues. Should be interesting what they find but Steve and Stacey discuss what they think about the audit and if it will actually do anything to change things. Then they preview the series' final game in Toronto between Luke Weaver and Chris Bassitt. But it beats the alternative. There are 12 teams with playoff spots right now, 10 teams whose seasons are over and eight teams with a second chance. The play-in tournament starts Tuesday, with Atlanta going to Miami and Minnesota visiting the Los Angeles Lakers. The winners of those games will be going to the postseason. After finishing an NBA-worst 17-65, Dwane Casey announced he was stepping down with one year left on his coaching contract to accept a role in the Troy Weaver-led front office. Casey was hired by the Pistons in 2018 as the reigning NBA Coach of the Year led them to the playoffs in his first season with the franchise. WNBA – WNBA adding charter flights for playoffs, back-to-back games The WNBA is adding charter flights for the entire playoffs and back-to-back regular season games this year. The league announced Monday it will pay for all of the flights. The cost is expected to be around $4.5 million, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details haven’t been publicly released. The league chartered for the WNBA Finals as well as for the road team in the Commissioner Cup championship game last year. As for Brittney Griner, the WNBA says it has plans for her travel but would like to keep them "confidential." WNBA – Boston heads to Fever as No. 1 pick in WNBA draft Aliyah Boston is the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, going to the Indiana Fever. It’s the first time that the Fever have had the top choice in the draft and they chose the South Carolina star. Boston, a three-time AP All-American who also was the Player of the Year as a junior, will solidify the post for Indiana. The Fever had the worst record in the league last season, going 5-31. Boston was one of four South Carolina players expected to be taken in the first two rounds of the draft. Minnesota took Diamond Miller with the No. 2 pick and Dallas drafted Maddy Siegrist with the third pick. NCAAMBB – Michigan State guard Tyson Walker returning for 5th season Michigan State standout Tyson Walker is returning for his fifth season. Walker announced his decision Monday with an Instagram post, giving a boost to coach Tom Izzo’s chances of contending for a title. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged a team-high 14.8 points and ranked second with nearly three assists per game. Walker attended Northeastern for two years before transferring and playing for the Spartans the past two seasons. He is eligible for a fifth season because the NCAA granted college athletes an extra year if they were enrolled two years ago when the COVID-19 pandemic began.
