It's something anthropologists will no doubt look at with bewilderment in years to come: the extraordinary breadth of TV shows that were aired during the 00s. From Fat Families to How To Look Good Naked, we're not sure there was anything more ruthless than the presenter of a show commissioned by Channel 4 between the years of 2001 and 2010.From the endless stream of TV shows capitalising on the nation's almost hysterical fatphobia, to the background hum of misogyny that had weaved its way into every conversation broadcasted at the time, this was a truly WILD time to have eyes, ears, or a television license. In this week's episode - we're taking a look at the role television has played, and still plays, in our collective body image. Healthification. See also healthified, healthifying. Adapting a recipe, meal or way of eating to improve its health value; to make it healthier.  Sounds good right? It depends on how you define health. Because if becoming pre-occupied with making food healthier causes stress and anxiety, it ain't good. If the focus is just to achieve weight loss, it ain't gonna be good. Especially when there is negligible evidence to prove healthification does what it sets out to. Because we live in a world that is overly weight focused, that is pro healthism, that refuses to understand the impact of weight stigma and the role of the wider determinants of health. Now if you love adapting your recipes for the feel-good factor or simply love experimenting with food, carry on! But it's all to easy to get caught up in fads and trends and lose sight of why you're doing it.  Healthification can be a slippery slope to disordered eating. And not just for me. In this episode I share some of my stories and past efforts to better myself. And what went wrong. I talk about what we did to the poor cauliflower, problematic messaging, privilege, morals and spiralling behaviours. Check out the pick n mix at the end where I recommend some cool reading that won't make you feel badly about yourself.  Resources 1.Food is not medicine by Dr Joshua Wolrich  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Food-Isnt-Medicine-Joshua-Wolrich/dp/1785043463/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=   2.Gentle Nutrition: A Non-Diet Approach to Healthy Eating by Rachael Hartley.  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gentle-Nutrition-Non-Diet-Approach-Healthy/dp/1628604247/ref=sr_1_1?crid=X5KEXYPKBZIV&keywords=gentle+nutrition&qid=1675779821&s=books&sprefix=gentle+nutrition%2Cstripbooks%2C90&sr=1-1   3. Welcome back to the BodPod! Today, we are so excited to have Dr. Joshua Wolrich, an NHS doctor living in the U.K. with a passion for helping people improve their relationship with food, on the show! After his own weight loss journey, he delved deep into the complexities of weight science and the health-at-every-size approach and realized that he had to make a public and deliberate shift away from promoting weight loss online. As a result, you will find him regularly addressing weight stigma and diet culture to his audience of over 400,000 while also fighting nutribollocks. He also recently completed his master's in nutrition and released his debut book, Food Isn't Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Joshua will share a bit about how he started using his Instagram as a platform for weight loss, the point at which he realized this was problematic, and the origins of his book. In addition, we'll talk about the importance of willing to be wrong and how Dr. Joshua came to this realization, how healthcare must change to become accessible to everyone, and how stereotypes can and often do play a role in healthcare. Last but not least, Dr. Joshua will discuss the way in which healthcare is weight-centric, how this leads to exclusive healthcare, and how this isn't really challenged by many doctors. Keep listening to hear how Dr. Joshua is working to rid healthcare of weight stigma and diet culture.Listen to Dr. Joshua Wolrich's podcast, Willing To Be Wrong, here.Instagram: @drjoshuawolrich

This week we're talking about Amanda Lee, the TikTok creator who posted about her experience with a fatphobic gastrointestinal medical specialist. We break down the incident that happened to her as well as the problematic way that her interview for The Today Show was framed. We answer a listener question about a couple who takes a break, then chooses to get back together and has some resentment leftover.  Stay until the end where Hailey talks about how she discovered the modern medical marvel of cough drops. Episode highlights:“How bad must it be for the people who are more marginalized than her.”“I'm ready to be at a point where people are going to take this shit seriously.”“Absolutely gender bias is a real thing, but…”“Not only is it dismissive to all fat people, but it's dismissive to what happened to Amanda.”“We're clearly not in a society yet that is willing to have empathy for fat people.”“You shouldn't have to have cancer for this to matter.”“Why do we need a mental health diagnosis for fat people?”“No, stress causes fatness, you dumbass.”“She shouldn't have to have a cancer diagnosis to get invited to do this interview.”“It doesn't matter what label we put on it, this is a thing that broke trust in the relationship.”“I understand how you could get 2 years into a crappy situation and still be there because of extenuating circumstances.”“I'm not going to be permissive to the guy who told you that you were ‘cuntsplaining'.”“I thought cough drops were a scam … my whole world has changed.”Links for Resources:Amanda Lee TikTok Video:https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMd5QG5YY/Woman, 27, Body Shamed by Doctor who Dismissed Her Pain, Later Diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer:https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/woman-27-body-shamed-doctor-194139681.htmlWilling to be Wrong with Dr. Joshua Wolrich:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/3-amanda-lee-medical-weight-stigma-history-bmi-why/id1555417267?i=1000512892912IG: @sexateverysizeEmail: sexateverysize@gmail.comCassie:IG & TikTok: @CassieWillnauerLPCAbout the hosts:Cassie Willnauer, MA, LPCCassie Willnauer is a licensed therapist serving the Kansas City area.
