OUTWEIGH: Leanne is back to continue the conversation from last week and dives deeper into the question of "Does it ever get easier?".  She argues that restrictive diets and intense exercise plans create a cycle of difficulty and ultimately fail because they train your brain for "hard work" instead of  training it for"ease."  This week Leanne literally shares a step-by-step checklist for how you can make sure your brain is focusing on creating "ease" by practicing behaviors that are enjoyable, sustainable, and create a sense of freedom.  You can take this "checklist" of practices that cultivate ease (flexibility, consistency, happiness)  contrasted with practices that reinforce difficulty (control, pain, guilt) to make sure that YOUR brain is set up for success.  By understanding these two categories (when your brain is practicing EASE vs. when your brain is practicing HARD), you can choose the path of least resistance which leads to lasting change and a more peaceful relationship with food and your body. Instead, she proposes a different approach:  focusing on the "why" behind your struggles with food and body image. By becoming a master of your thoughts and habits,  you can break free from the "diet mentality" and start creating sustainable change.  The episode offers a seed of hope, suggesting that true ease comes from changing your thinking, not through sheer willpower and deprivation.HOST: Leanne Ellington // StresslessEating.com // @leanneellington To learn more about how to turn off the part of your brain that's obsessed with food or obsessed with your weight and rewire your own brain for peace and freedom,....but WITHOUT restricting yourself, punishing your body, (and definitely WITHOUT ever having to use words like macros, low-carb, or calorie burn) check out Leanne's FREE Stressless Eating Webinar @ www.StresslessEating.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So many women WANT to stop dieting, but they don't know how, or they don't know what that even looks like, because it's all they've ever known. So this idea of "food freedom" or NOT being on some sort of diet is not only foreign to them, but it's actually pretty scary, because all their brain has known is what it's like to count, measure, restrict, and control. Or their brain knows what it's like to bounce to the opposite end of the spectrum, and end up in an uncontrollable cycle of mindless eating, emotional eating, stress eating, or binging, and they just end up feeling super out-of-control. It's about cultivating a new relationship with stress and gathering the tools to help you break free from its grip and reclaim control over your well-being. Only then can you start aligning with the version of yourself that you truly want to be.  HOST: Amy Brown // RadioAmy.com // @RadioAmyHOST: Leanne Ellington // @leanneellington // StresslessEating.com To learn more about re-wiring your brain to heal from the all-or-nothing diet mentality for good....but WITHOUT restricting yourself, punishing your body, (and definitely WITHOUT ever having to use words like macros, low-carb, or calorie burn) check out Leanne's FREE Stressless Eating Webinar @ www.StresslessEating.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Amy and Leanne are back for PART 2 of the "Redefine to Align" Series, where they explore the complex topic of boundaries—  which is an integral part of self-discovery, but also an often-misunderstood part. While society often portrays boundaries as external limitations imposed on US, Amy and Leanne want to challenge that narrative and unravel the misconception that boundaries are merely external barricades, emphasizing that true boundary-setting originates from within. They explore  the concept that what may appear as a boundary problem is often rooted as an integrity problem, and they guide you to reevaluate your relationship with your own personal limits. This episode was designed to empower you to redefine boundaries not as restrictive walls, but as liberating expressions of self-respect and authenticity so you can align with the version of yourself that you TRULY want to be.

Welcome to the "The Redefine to Align" Series, a new 4 part series here on Outweigh where we are going to dive headfirst into the transformative journey of redefining typical words or paradigms in our lives that might NOT be aligning us in the direction we WANT to go. Amy and Leanne are here to help you navigate the challenging landscape of the holiday season, where societal pressures and external expectations often dictate your sense of accomplishment, and this first episode was designed to be a source of hope and inspiration to redefine YOUR own definitions of success. Their goal is simply to challenge the conventional notions tied to success, unraveling the 'typical' narratives that are tied to success -- things like weight loss, food choices, and exercise metrics  -- that often overshadow the intrinsic value within each of us, and take us OUT of alignment.  By examining these subtle yet profound shifts in your mindset, what would happen if you detached from external validations and began cultivating a more authentic definition of success —-- one that resonates from YOU and where you are in your journey? And what if you could work WITH it (learn how to actually take care of it on a nervous system level so you can actually get rid of it if that's what you want to do) instead of working AGAINST it? OUTWEIGH: In this eye-opening episode of Outweigh, we take a deep dive into the untold truths about the "Cost of Skinny."    Leanne reflects on a pivotal moment in her own life, a major spine surgery at just 25 years old, which she endearingly calls the "Cost of Skinny." It's a powerful reminder of how the relentless pursuit of an idealized body image can lead to devastating consequences.   For years, Leanne was fixated on attaining a 'skinny,' 'lean,' 'toned,' or 'hot' body, drowning out the critical signals her body was sending her. Ignoring the screams for self-care, she pushed herself to the brink until her body couldn't take it anymore.   But that wasn't the only cost she paid. The "Diet Mentality" she had embraced for decades had inflicted additional invisible wounds:   ★ A Food Prison: Constantly toggling between restrictive eating and carefree indulgence, caught in a cycle of obsession and guilt over every morsel of food.   ★ A Body Prison: Feeling trapped in a body that didn't align with her true self, hiding behind oversized clothes, and allowing her body to dictate her life.   ★ A Shame Prison: Carrying the burden of shame for struggling with food and body image, believing she was fundamentally flawed.   ★ A 'Fat Head': A self-image tainted by negative self-perception, no matter how much weight she lost or how successful she became.   Leanne knows that her experience is far from unique. Every woman stuck on the diet and weight loss roller coaster is unknowingly paying their own "Cost of Skinny." In this episode, we dissect the ins and outs of how to break free from this destructive cycle, providing insights and strategies to help you avoid your own "Cost of Skinny" and embark on a journey toward self-acceptance, self-care, and genuine well-being.   HOST: Leanne Ellington // @leanneellington // StresslessEating.com To learn more about re-wiring your brain to heal from the all-or-nothing diet mentality for good....but WITHOUT restricting yourself, punishing your body, (and definitely WITHOUT ever having to use words like macros, low-carb, or calorie burn) check out Leanne's FREE Stressless Eating Webinar @  www.StresslessEating.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In fact, I was actually making my disordered eating WORSE! Because willpower and motivation and the ability to ‘grit' my way through yet another unsustainable diet, were NOT my problems.   The REAL problem was this idea in my head that actually WANTED to ‘get good' at controlling myself…or to be a better ‘rule-follower'.   THAT was the problem. It was that ‘Hyper-Control Mentality' that was keeping me stuck, and the fact that I was trying to become MORE skillful in a way of thinking that was setting me up to LOSE and setting me up to FAIL…well that was just the icing on the cake. She shares the most important things you need to know about making sure your healing journey stays front-of-mind, the mistakes to avoid along the way, and some pivotal advice to take into consideration if you are ready to focus on setting goals again AFTER you've healed from your own disorder.      CONTENT WARNING: Here at Outweigh we want to be sensitive to the fact that some of this subject matter might be a little bit confrontational for some of you on your healing journey, but we didn't want to just NOT talk about it, or avoid these important subjects altogether. Because, wherever you are on your healing journey, at some point in time, you might be ready for whatever YOUR next step is, and that might include goal setting or focusing on new outcomes.    And most of what's out there in the modern day world to meet you in those goals is a surefire way to bring you back down the road of toxicity and disorder, and we didn't want to leave you hanging like that. So if you are in that place in your healing journey, and you're ready to look at what's next,  this interview series shares a perspective on how to do just that– while still keeping your mental and emotional health AND your healing journey front and center.    So this is just a bit of a heads up that we are going to be covering some topics that might not have been broached yet on this podcast, but also just reiterating that the purpose is to show you how to view these once-controversial or difficult topics in a beautiful, healthy, and empowering way that ensures that your healing journey stays front and center. OUTWEIGH: I've been on diets and weight loss programs since the age of 7.   I got really good at outsmarting whatever plan or program I was on.   I got really good at “fake it till you make it” and motivational pump-me-ups.   I got really good at tricking the scale, tricking my stomach, and tricking my mind.   I got really good at living my life hungry, tired, miserable and restricted.   Yup I mastered them alright, but there was a major cost.   Food was the boss of me.   And...   I was a slave to my brutal workout routine to ensure that I didn't gain anything back.   Because no matter how motivated or disciplined I got myself to be on a day to day basis, food and exercise still ruled my every move.   So how can YOU tell if you're using food and exercise as a tool to get yourself healthy? Or...   ...if you're using it as a weapon: a weapon of punishment, control, restriction, or shame.   In this episode of Outweigh we talk about four tell-tale signs to help you discover if you too are using food & exercise as a weapon AND if so, how you can change that! This is one of the most common struggles that women have today when it comes to their relationships with food, their bodies, and themselves.   In this week's episode of Outweigh we are going to get you clear on exactly why this happens (why you lose trust in yourself or in the possibility that it will ever get any better), and how you can finally shift this for good. OUTWEIGH: I believe that I can tell a lot about a woman's emotional health based on how much time she spends on social media. I know that might sound a little bit weird, but social media has a bigger impact on your mind, brain, self-esteem, and self-image than you might think.   And THAT is the elephant in the room that I bring up on today's podcast: Facebook and Instagram and other forms of social media (if you allow it) can be used as powerful tools to connect, share parts of your life, and keep your finger on the pulse of the lives of people that matter to you. But if you're not careful, they can easily become a weapon of comparison-itus, unattainable standards, isolation, and loneliness.   On top of that though, for people out there that ALREADY struggle with self-esteem, body image, or self-worth, I believe it can be even MORE dangerous. And that's why I felt called to simply have a conversation about it and take a look at how it is TRULY impacting us.   In this episode of Outweigh,  I teach you some valuable distinctions that will help you discover if you are the one influencing it, or if it is the one controlling you. OUTWEIGH: Exercise is a well-known way to get endorphins. That was made clear to a lot of us back in 2001 when Reese Witherspoon, playing Ell Woods, gave us this classic line in Legally Blonde: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands. They just don't.” However, exercise it's not the ONLY way to release endorphins. When Amy first started true recovery 3 years ago…she had to put a halt to a lot of her working out because she didn't really know how to enjoy it and do it for the good of her body. Her reasons for working out were going through her eating disorder filter. For example: She would exercise more after eating a lot or missing a workout and she ran a lot even though she truly didn't like running. In recovery, Amy had to build a new filter for herself when it came to exercise, so she had to halt almost all workouts (sans hiking & walking!!) for a while to recalibrate. Maybe you are in a place where you need to press pause on working out so that you can reset and work on a new filter. In this episode, Amy shares several ways you can still release endorphins (and keep your body full of feel-good chemicals) without working out! After 14 years of battling her eating disorder and seeking treatment in both Australia and New Zealand—where she was told she was ‘chronic' and should expect to struggle with food and body image issues for the rest of her life—Kristie flew to America for intensive treatment and made a full recovery. Kristie was stunned by the gap and unequal access to support and resources both here and overseas, so she resolved to make cost effective support available to everyone, no matter where they lived. By working online and living with people in recovery all around the world, Kristie Amadio is adding a new dimension to the platform used to treat eating disorders.    “All you need is to have the curiosity of what it would be like to not have an eating disorder in order to start your journey to recovery.” - Kristie Amadio    Learn more about Kristie's work here:  https://www.recoveredliving.com    Kristie's Tedx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ut3rxb1nwc    Best places to find more about Amy: RadioAmy.com + @RadioAmy To contact Amy about Outweigh: hello@outweighpodcast.com     SUBSCRIBE and follow so you never miss an episode and SHARE with your friends & family. (OUTWEIGH) Singer/Song-writer Maura Streppa is Amy's guest today! Maura battled with an eating disorder for most of her life, but didn't realize it until she was a freshman in college. She started recovery over COVID and really used songwriting to help get through it. She wrote a song called “Skinnier” that comes out December 2nd and hopes it will help others feel less alone + encourage them to NOT think that life will be better if/when they are skinnier!! About Maura: There is a place where country meets soul meets pop. That sweet spot exists in the heart of singer/songwriter, Maura Streppa. Heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Amy Winehouse, Kacey Musgraves, and more, Maura uniquely and effortlessly creates a home for lovers of the old and the new alike. Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, Maura discovered her love for music at a young age. After a move from the city to the south lands of North Carolina, Maura found that her mother's piano keys helped her express her deepest emotions. It was from that moment on that she decided she wanted to share these cathartic songs with the world. Maura continued writing, singing, and sharing until the age of 18, when she was asked to play the Carolina Country Music Festival and to open for country music star, Jimmie Allen. It was in that opportunity that Maura became more sure than ever that singing country music for thousands of people was what she wanted to do with her life. She promptly packed her bags and made her way to Music City. Since making the big move to Nashville, Maura has been performing almost every single night, sharing her soulful songs with those who cross her path. She recently won Tennessee Songwriter's Week and made her debut at The Bluebird Cafe with her song, “Singer and The Song”. The eclectic artist has a strong conviction to create music with authenticity, love, and purpose and works hard to carry out that calling every day. Instagram: @maurastreppamusic  To contact Amy about Outweigh: hello@outweighpodcast.com Best places to find more about Amy: RadioAmy.com + @RadioAmySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How To Know If You Have An Eating Disorder + Questions to Consider When Thinking About Body Image with Ashley Vicari (Outweigh)

For this chat with licensed therapist Ashley Vicari (episode 3 of 3 with her), Amy and Ashley talk about identifying whether or not you have an eating disorder or body image issues. *Most* eating disorder diagnoses share a common basis surrounding body image: an over-evaluation of shape and weight (meaning that someone with an eating disorder tends to put a lot of their eggs into the body image basket, so much so that it impairs their everyday lives!!)    Ashley also shares with us '10 Questions to Consider When Thinking About Body Image' and breaks down each question further inside the episode: -What are my body rules?-Where did these rules come from?-What function do these rules serve for me? Are they keeping me safe? Hidden?-Can I practice non-judgement when looking at or thinking about my body?-Am I able to see the purpose my arms, legs, stomach, etc. serves?-Even if I do not like my body, what would respecting my body look like?-Do I plan on living with my body rules all my life?-How would my life be different if I respected my body?-What matters most to me outside of my size, weight, and/or appearance?-What role does the media or social media play in the way I view my body and what steps can I take to reduce or eliminate the harm of these images or messages?   Link to Ashley's full blog post about Body Image: https://renfrewcenter.com/5-body-positive-trends-how-body-image-movements-impact-culture/    Eating Disorder Center Where Ashley Works: https://renfrewcenter.com    To contact Amy about Outweigh: hello@outweighpodcast.com   Best places to find more about Amy: RadioAmy.com + @RadioAmySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What To Do If You Think Your Child Has An Eating Disorder with Ashley Vicari (Outweigh)

We're excited to have licensed therapist Ashley Vicari back as the expert with Amy! In this episode (ep. 2 of 3) they navigate what to do if you think your child has an eating disorder. There's a blog that Ashley wrote called: 'Teens & Eating Disorders: 5 Helpful Tips for Better Understanding Your Teen' and Amy has Ashley break it down for us.  As a parent or caregiver, your support is imperative. Below are a few tips you can use to assist your teen as they move through their journey of adolescence and aid in preventing symptoms of disordered eating.  1. Repeat After Me: It's Not Just A Phase 2. Acknowledge the Pressures of Social Media 3. Notice Their Emotions and Behaviors; They Want You To 4. Get Involved – You Are Their Parent, Not Their Friend 5. Honor Their Bravery and Honesty Eating disorders are unfortunately all-too common among teenagers. This is partly because the pathways which lead to disordered eating are often far too easy for teens to fall into. As parents and guardians, we must have the tools to recognize these paths so we can offer guidance when it's needed most.
