Jason Kreuzman is a pediatric occupational therapist based in St. Louis, Missouri, specializing in Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and chronic pain. He is the Co-Chair of the FND Society Pediatric Committee and the Chair of the Multidisciplinary FND Committee at St. Louis Children's Hospital. As the founder of Rewire OT, Jason is opening a new outpatient clinic and leading the charge to create pediatric OT/PT treatment guidelines for FND. He joins us to demystify this complex condition and share a hopeful, practical path to recovery.Description:What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and how is it similar to concussion recovery? In this fascinating episode, pediatric occupational therapist Jason Kreuzman breaks down FND—a disorder where the brain and body's communication goes awry, causing very real, debilitating symptoms like functional seizures, limb weakness, and tremors.Jason shares his journey into this niche field, the heartbreaking stigma patients face, and the striking similarities between FND and post-concussion syndrome (including the "invisible" nature of symptoms and the "boom-bust" cycle). We dive deep into the role of occupational therapy in FND recovery, focusing on nervous system regulation, sensory integration, and the crucial "twist": focusing on the task, not the symptom. We discuss:A clear definition of FND and how it's diagnosed. The surprising overlap between FND, chronic pain, and concussion. Why a holistic, team-based approach (OT, PT, Psychology) is essential.Practical strategies for nervous system regulation and interoceptive awareness.Crucial advice for parents and caregivers on co-regulation and advocacy. What to do (and what not to do) during a functional seizure.School accommodations.A powerful message of hope: recovery is possible. If you or a loved one is navigating confusing neurological symptoms, this episode offers validation, clarity, and a roadmap to finding the right help.Shownotes & Key Resources Mentioned:Resources from Jason Kreuzman:RewireOT.com: Jason's central hub for FND resources, information, and updates on his outpatient clinic (opening late 2025).FND Society: Jason is the Co-Chair of their Pediatric Committee. In this episode, philosopher Kevin Aho joins Andrew Soren to explore how modern life has turned meaning into measurement. Together, they examine how neoliberal values have reshaped higher education, the wellness industry, and even our sense of self.Kevin and Andrew discuss how the culture of busyness and the commodification of well-being have left many people feeling unmoored, and why rediscovering our shared humanity might be the most important work of all.Kevin Aho is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Communication and Philosophy at Florida Gulf Coast University. His work explores existentialism, phenomenology, and the philosophy of health and illness.Key TakeawaysMeaning has become a metric. When education and work are reduced to measurable outputs, we lose sight of their deeper purpose: to help people grow, think critically, and engage with one another as human beings. The wellness industry reflects a deeper emptiness. The rise of “self-care” culture often masks structural problems, placing responsibility for well-being entirely on individuals instead of addressing the social conditions that shape health and belonging. The self is not a solo project. Kevin challenges the notion of a separate, autonomous self, suggesting that meaning and identity only exist through relationships with others.Community is the antidote to alienation. Small acts of connection, through art, education, or shared spaces, can help rebuild the collective life that neoliberal culture erodes. Why This Episode MattersIn a time when organizations are driven by efficiency and individuals feel pressured to optimize every part of life, this conversation reminds us that meaning cannot be measured or achieved alone. For leaders and changemakers, Kevin's ideas offer a call to design systems and workplaces that honor interdependence, nurture reflection, and restore our sense of community and care.About Our GuestKevin Aho is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Communication and Philosophy at Florida Gulf Coast University. His research spans existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and the philosophy of health and illness. Through his books, Kevin explores what it means to live well, face suffering, and find meaning in our finite lives. His forthcoming work, A Phenomenology of Functional Neurological Disorder, continues this inquiry into how illness and vulnerability reveal what it truly means to be human.

Your doctor just became your worst enemy. When the medical establishment brands chronic dizziness conditions like PPPD, MDDS, and vestibular migraines as "incurable," they're not just wrong, they're actively destroying lives through calculated ignorance. Dr. Yonit Arthur, a board-certified audiologist with a doctorate from Purdue University, drops a bombshell: patients experiencing 24/7 sensory collapse, paralyzing terror, and complete disorientation aren't suffering from permanent damage. They're trapped in a fear loop that doctors reinforce with every "learn to manage it" prescription. After watching the medical system fail hundreds of desperate patients who've seen 20, 30, even 40 specialists, Dr. Arthur launched The Steady Coach a popular YouTube channel with free courses to expose an uncomfortable truth. These "chronic" conditions persist because patients have been programmed to believe they're broken. Functional Neurological Disorder, or FND, is the most common disorder you've probably never heard of. Some say it might be as common as MS or Parkinson's and yet it's not well known even by many medical professionals. It can cause seizures, paralysis, convulsions and changes in sensation, as well as pain, fatigue and memory difficulties. It's caused by a problem with the system in the brain that connects us consciously into our bodies, leaving sufferers unable to access their bodies properly. Because it doesn't show up on scans and tests it is often not diagnosed effectively, and patients can face difficulties accessing the help they need or even being believed that their symptoms are real.Claudia Hammond sits in on a consultation at the Maudsley Hospital between Emma, a new patient who is having exactly those problems, and Mark Edwards, Professor of Neurology and Interface Disorders at King's College London. She also meets Callum Alexander, a recovered patient who now volunteers for the charity FND Hope. He was referred by Mark for specialist neurophysiotherapy with Glenn Nielsen at St George's University Hospital, which had immediate results. Glenn tells us that FND can cause the brain to become excessively focused on actions are normally automatic, such as walking, and that redirecting the brain's attention can be one way of alleviating it.Meanwhile, Emma is relieved she finally has a name to put to her condition and Mark is pushing for more positive diagnoses of FND.Back in the studio, Claudia is joined by Kavita Vedhara, Professor of Health Psychology at Cardiff University. With increasing polarisation in the US in the run up to the forthcoming presidential election, she presents a study that sheds light on how we might view people who are more nuanced in their approach to controversial topics. You might expect people who are able to express both sides of an argument to thrive in social situations. However, this new research suggests that people with nuanced views are seen as less likeable than those with polarised views, even by those who agree with that person's ultimate position. How does that impact our chances of being able to have reasoned political debates? The 2025 All in the Mind Awards are now open for nominations. You can nominate individuals, professionals and groups who have helped you in your hardest times.Claudia catches up with ZeZe Sohawon who nominated her psychiatrist Dr Claire Purcell for an award in 2021. Since then ZeZe has set up a youth autism and mental health charity, Emotion Dysregulation and Autism, helping autistic young people who struggle with their emotions leading to mental health problems. The charity is about to start delivering a peer support programme in Birmingham hospitals, and she's done all of this while studying for a Neuroscience degree. This year she's a judge for the All in the Mind Awards and tells Claudia why she thinks people should take part. You can find out more about the awards in the programme or by going to bbc.co.uk/radio4/allinthemind where you'll also find full terms. Functional neurological disorder (FND) has been called a “silent epidemic,” a “crisis” in neurology, and psychiatry's “blind spot.”And, I have to admit it has been a huge personal blind spot for me. Luckily, others in the OT community have been hard at work standardizing care for these patients. Multidisciplinary treatment, including referral to OT is a best practice for these patients. And, today we will look at expert recommendations for OT assessment and treatment. After we review the OT recommendations for FND, we will welcome Naoya Ogura, OTD, OTR/L, he is the West Los Angeles Clinic Director at re-active and specializes in neurological conditions like POTS, EDS, MCAS, and FND. Dr Cath Gregory chats about the latest evidence in Functional Neurological Disorders and the speech-language pathologist's role when working with people with Functional Neurological Communication and Swallowing Disorders. Key Takeaway: (1-2 sentences of the main theme.) Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a problem with the ‘software' of the brain that can occur across the lifespan. No longer classed as ‘psychogenic', this disorder is now known to follow a biopsychosocial model of illness. It is essential that a positive diagnosis, rather than a diagnosis of exclusion, occurs. Clear education about the disorder and the use of distraction to help access more autonomic pathways is the current consensus treatment for communication and swallowing disorders. A multidisciplinary approach is always required for people with more complex needs. Check out the show notes on https://www.speechuncensored.com/podcastepisodes/163

Ryleigh Jones was a happy, lively, normal 8-year-old girl until she was injured.March 23rd, 2022 Ryleigh lost feeling and ability to walk. With the diet change she has begun to walk again but the limbs have no sensation. Ryleigh no longer feels when she urinates. This is a tragedy to her Mom and Dad.Between the 15th of February and April 20, 2022 Ryleigh has been admitted to VCU Health system 11 times and they have been unable to diagnose her properly. They say that Ryleigh has a disorder called Functional Neurological Disorder. We do not believe this to be true as she is only 8 years old, and this diagnosis would be unheard of at this age.Ryleigh has undergone extensive medical procedures such as EEG, MRI, and a lumbar puncture, all of which have come back clear. We still have no diagnosis for our beautiful, loving girl. If you've known Ryleigh, you know she loved life, school, friends, baseball, and dance.Ryleigh has suffered significant memory loss to the extent some times she doesn't remember her dad and me or her family and beloved dog Buddy.Ryleigh was injured on January 6, 2022, and was diagnosed with COVID on January 12th. During COVID she had a straight 48-hour fever and lethargy. On March 24th, we took Ryleigh to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where we were quickly shut down because they pulled our record from VCU Health System, so they could not truly do an extensive workup on Ryleigh. JHH did not help us much other than running tests that suggest Ryleigh may have Porphyria and Celiac disease. As of 4/25/2022, Ryleigh has improved slightly because we changed her diet significantly. Gluten-Free foods and plant-based organic foods are all that Ryleigh can eat as of now. As you can imagine, for an 8-year-old, this has been significantly challenging. We have several upcoming outpatient appointments to determine further what damage has been done to our loving little girl.Ryleigh's blood work has not been explained to us, and there are no explanations for why her SED rate, CRP, and other tests are elevated. Please consider helping us figure out what is happening with our child. We have accumulated over $13,000 in medical bills, and her treatment is ongoing we may also have to have an attorney.Thank you, and hug your child tight because tomorrow may not be the same.https://givesendgo.com/ryleighFit, Healthy & Happy Podcast The Fit, Healthy and Happy Podcast is designed to help you become your best overall self.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

She discusses an unexpected turn in her career focus when she came to realize a psychosomatic phenomenon through one of her students. Linda tells us about what a psychological non-epileptic seizure is and how other unconscious psychological material manifests itself through the body. Through work with dreams, she has been able to facilitate great healing with clients and her community. At the end, Linda gives us amazing tools to work with our dreams and the initial steps which will help with this particular process of discovery.
