A lot of parents (and teachers) are concerned right now about children's resilience. Will they 'bounce back' from the difficulties of the pandemic? But is 'bouncing back' really the way we should be thinking about this? We have all been changed by the pandemic; shouldn't we acknowledge this and see how we can be the best versions of ourselves, incorporating what we've been through over the last few years, rather than trying to 'bounce back' into what we were before (which frankly wasn't all that amazing in a lot of cases, as we rushed from one thing to another with never any time for ourselves). In this episode we also consider Black and Indigenous researchers' perspectives on resilience, and see how their ideas can perhaps shift how we perceive resilience - and thus how we support our children. In the first episode of “Soul Food” with personal trainer, fitness instructor and life coach, Ange Helie, we took a deep dive into understanding why she is referred to as the “Anti-Diet” individual. Now, in order to avoid calling out her mother for arriving at such a distinguished title, I asked Ange to provide some clarity since there are so many diet solutions available on the market. Selected highlights: [2:22]...there is this external pressure…because by doing so, this will equal weight loss [2:30]...we are getting ads for diet products, meal plans, templates or calculations you need to follow to lose weight [5:10]...when we see these beautiful [people] on social media…we are told “...do this calorie plan so you can get this body…” [5:32]...on top of the physical, it's the mental exhaustion of trying to follow this plan [6:35]...every single woman I work with comes to me saying: “...I am doing all the things, I'm taking the magic supplements, I am watching my sugar…but I am not seeing any results…” [9:24]...you just start fearing food [13:59]...I am really curious on the emotional state and whether you are really in tune [with the fact] that you are eating? [32:51]...we make these into giant statements where “butter = weight gain” – for sure, if you are going to eat a whole block of butter [37:31]...you know when you are feeling healthy; you know when you are feeling good… §§§ The following links stem from my “Anti-Diet” discussion with Ange: Beyoncé “master cleanse”. Beyoncé made this cleanse “famous” her role in the 2006 film, “Dreamgirls” [NOTE: this is the “spring cleaning cleanse” Ange and her friend undertook in April 2008] USA Today published this article in February 2019 titled “Beyonce lost 20 pounds with a juice cleanse. Her experience began with a love of food which led her to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. As her love of science and helping people wove with that initial path, she continued on to a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Nutrition with a dual concentration in clinical dietetics and culinary food science. From there, her background spanned diverse roles across the food, nutrition, and healthcare sectors as she went on to ground in medical nutrition therapy.    Kymber is especially passionate about disordered eating management and prevention. In this vein, she focuses on educating clients about the multi-faceted ways history, marketing, food systems, culture, psychology, and body image affect health and relationships to nutrition, food, and body. What happens when an industry promises life changing results but this comes at a price? But a price they can't quantify for you? Folk may opt to have surgery to help them lose weight and say they "know the risks" of the surgery, but do they? Will they be aware there is a 5% chance of them dying? Will they acknowledge that to lose a lot of weight, they will be making a functional digestive tract, dysfunctional? Will they understand they may not lose the weight promised because of their genetics or documented side effects? Will they get that the gut may stop working sometime within 7 years of surgery? Will they agree to sticking to a diet and exercise regime for the rest of their life (only it may be more difficult than before) because their metabolism will be permanently altered? Will they accept they may suffer complications that require more surgery, that may further add to any existing complications? Will they accept the risk of rapid weight loss increasing the risk of a sudden heart attack? Will they understand they may get VERY sick with this surgery no matter what they do? I have yet to meet someone who knew all of this, even after doing their own meticulous research.  In this episode Mel shares the information bariatric surgeons should be providing for their patients to make a fully informed decision. She talks about the risks of combining eating disorders with weight loss surgery and what you need to think about in taking the best care of yourself. She's a sought-after speaker, a researcher who has published in peer-reviewed journals, and is widely viewed as an expert on the topics of mindful eating, body image, and diet culture in the media. She's also the founder of The Anti-Diet Plan, a weight-inclusive online mindful eating program and is the author of The Diet-Free Revolution: 10 Steps to Free Yourself from the Diet-Cycle with Mindful Eating and Radical Self-Acceptance.The book is an incredible resource for those looking to rebuild a relationship with food and their bodies that's rooted in a trust that your body is built to tell you what it needs. Diets teach you to rely on an external plan or lifestyle for your meals, leading you to ask questions like, "If I shouldn't diet, what should I eat?" And it was midway through the interview with Dr. Conason when I realize that the question itself is rooted in diet culture.As a reminder, diet culture and its overarching idea that if we fit a certain body type we'll be happy and diets are the way to get there. And because of that, we muting our bodies' signals to eat less in hopes of shrinking. We get it.We're in our second week of our deep dive into diet culture on our podcast, #WeGotGoals. And this week, we're speaking to Judith Matz, LCSW, ACSW. In terms of our deep dive, think of this episode as an intro to what diet culture is and a 101 on how to get out of it.Judith Matz is a therapist and nationally recognized speaker on the topics of diet culture, binge eating, emotional eating, body image, and weight stigma. She has her own journey with dieting and she shares on the episode how she inevitably broke up with her scale and made a professional choice to dedicate her professional life to undoing what diets have done to human beings.Matz is the co-author of the books The Diet Survivor's Handbook and Beyond a Shadow of a Diet. She also co-created two card decks that are meant to make an anti-diet and body positive lifestyle more accessible - The Making Peace with Food card deck and the Body Positivity card deck. We looked to her for her expertise in diets and diet culture for us. Read that as, I asked the stupid questions so you don't have to.You'll hear her define a diet as “Any time you make a change in how you eat for the purpose of weight loss.” I've been reading anti-diet books in public this month as I prepare for these interviews, and I've heard from a lot of people about their systems that aren't diets - they're more like do's and don'ts. According to Matz, your system is a diet if you're doing it to lose weight. And you'll also hear her define diet culture, which might as well be, “well, it's in the air you breathe,” but for the purpose of this conversation, it's “a belief that thinness is a moral virtue and thinness is health. Therefore, it's worth doing anything to achieve that status and when you get to that status, you'll be happier and healthier.”So, as we dive deeper, I'm convinced that diet culture is basically the matrix - our minds are so occupied with the illusion in front of us that if we just lose weight, we'll have the life of our dreams. We're so occupied, in fact, that we're willing to ignore the fact that you'll hear from several experts this month on diets and diet culture. Hunger made the men obsessed with food. They would dream and fantasize about food, read and talk about food and savor the two meals a day they were given.”) How are we supposed to eat? That is literally the question that started this all and you'll hear more specific answers to this question throughout the month (From both Judith Matz and Dr. Alexis Conason, who you'll hear from next week), but when I spoke with Dr. Conason, it was clear that the question itself was rooted in diet culture. Damn it. Our bodies have cues that we'll speak to in the coming weeks that we've conditioned ourselves to ignore.

This episode continues our conversation on the topic of children and food.  A few months ago we heard from https://yourparentingmojo.com/captivate-podcast/eating/ (Dr. Lindo Bacon about how the things we've learned about obesity might not actually be the whole story).  Then we talked https://yourparentingmojo.com/captivate-podcast/dor/ (with Ellyn Satter about the approach she devised called Division of Responsibility), which holds the parent/caregiver responsible for the what, when, and where of eating and the child responsible for whether and how much.   We followed that with a https://yourparentingmojo.com/captivate-podcast/sugarproof/ (conversation with Dr. Michael Goran, a world-renowned expert on the impact of sugar on our bodies, and specifically on children's bodies) – and co-author of the book SugarProof.  While the research seems to indicate that consuming large amounts of sugar isn't necessarily the best thing for us, when I dug into the original papers that form the backbone of SugarProof I found that the results didn't always seem to be quite as large as the book indicated.   In this episode we take another look at sugar – this time from the perspective of sociologist https://essl.leeds.ac.uk/sociology/staff/53/dr-karen-throsby (Dr. Karen Throsby).  Dr. Thorsby received her BA in English Language and Literature from Lincoln College, Oxford, and a MSc in Gender and later a Ph.D from the London School of Economics.  She is currently  an Associate Professor in Gender Studies at the University of Leeds, and is writing a book entitled Sugar Rush: Science, Obesity, and the Social Life of Sugar.  For the book, she is analyzing over 500 UK newspaper articles about sugar, as well as policy documents, scientific publications, popular science articles, self-help literature, and documentaries.  She wants to understand what happens when we demonize sugar as ‘public enemy number one,' and along with it the fat body.  She doesn't aim to determine the ‘truth' about sugar or offer prescriptions about what people should eat, but instead think about how this debate relates to how scientific knowledge is produced, validated, and appropriated, panics about health and body size, the role of generation, gender, race, and class, and the lived inequalities associated with food.   Shownotes: (02:10) Introducing Dr. Throsby (03:22) One of your big focuses is on the idea of sugar being addictive.  Can you tell us why you start there?  What does it mean to be addicted to something, and can we be addicted to sugar? We get it.Dr. Lindo Bacon, whose pronouns are they/them, wasn't an easy interview to get. They're a force in the emerging research that supports the health at every size (HAES) movement and in the movement to end fat stigma. They also authored the books "Health at Every Size," and "Radical Belonging," as well as co-authoring "Body Respect." Dr. Bacon also required a little convincing as to why a media outlet called "aSweatLife" cared about being a part of the conversation on diet culture. And that concern wasn't without merit.For years, we've avoided talk of diets on aSweatLife - sure, you'll see a reference here or there to a name-brand diet - but we've said for years that we don't want to tell you what to eat or not eat.Indulge me for a minute here - I spent the first 18 years of my life in Minnesota. If you've heard of "Minnesota nice" the concept would be more aptly named, "Minnesota avoidance." My people don't talk about things that are uncomfortable and will even go so far as to lie to retail associates. "I'll be back later for this," we say holding up an item of clothing we tried on and hated. Everyone knows you're not coming back.So as we were approaching our 6th year of the podcast, #WeGotGoals, we decided as a team to talk about the things we've avoided or that we truly just want to learn more about, starting with diet culture.In not participating in the conversation about diets, we weren't doing any work to undo their negative impact.That brings us to the start of our deep dive on diet culture over the month of January. We chose this month to tackle this topic because we know the messages you're being inundated with right now - yesterday, I lost count of how many commercials offered me a chance to lose weight or get my money back. Over the month, we're featuring four experts who each have a unique point of view in the diet culture space - therapists, researchers, experts in eating disorder recovery, and those with lived experience.And we're starting with Dr. Bacon because they have the education and background to support the fact that over a person's lifetime, diets simply do not work, which you'll hear all about in the episode. You'll also hear about the emotional effects of dieting that their work validated.Dr. Bacon is a curious human, pursuing several degrees to understand their body and the relationship between the size of a body and health. They went to graduate school for psychology, pursued another graduate degree in Exercise Physiology, and finally landed on a PhD in physiology from the University of California, Davis. That's where they did their research that led to the book "Health at Every Size." Their peer reviewed research found this: "Concern has arisen that this weight focused paradigm is not only ineffective at producing thinner, healthier bodies, but also damaging, contributing to food and body preoccupation, repeated cycles of weight loss and regain, distraction from other personal health goals and wider health determinants, reduced self-esteem, eating disorders, other health decrement, and weight stigmatization and discrimination [6–8]."Needless to say, they know their stuff and they are an expert in not only the negative impact of dieting, but also, the medical stigma that those living in larger bodies face, as well as the identities that intersect with weight, like socioeconomic status, gender, and race.Resources: Dr. Bacon's website has a litany of resources on fat stigma, HAES, as well as resources for those working in health and fitness.The Maintenance phase podcast episode I reference titled "Is Fat Bad for You" is an excellent listen if you want to know more about the challenge of doing science-based anti-diet research.Research by Dr. Bacon and team that resulted from the research they conducted around HAES: Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence for a Paradigm Shift.The Keys' study that we reference (if you've taken intro psychology, you've probably read about it), in which 36 men starved themselves for research at the University of Minnesota.You'll hear us reference the theory of a body's set point (on this episode and throughout the month) here's more on thatOn the episode, we chose to use the word, "fat" you'll hear that throughout the episode. In today's episode of the Understanding Disordered Eating Podcast, we will be sitting down with Rachel Tuchman, LMHC. Rachel is a licensed mental health counselor with over 10 years of experience. She has worked with many diverse populations, and now is in private practice in New York. She works with kids, teens, adults, and most importantly for our conversation is a HAES-aligned clinician. So it stands for Health at Every Size, and she dedicates a lot of her time to educating parents and kids on the importance of body respect, and the behaviors that truly honor our health. Rachel does a ton of speaking for schools and various community organizations, and is very active about this topic on social media. In this episode, Rachel tells us what health actually means and how it differs for each person. A way of viewing or orienting towards our health, weight, eating, etc. Dr. Lindo Bacon wrote the book Health at Every Size in 2010. I found the book and read it soon after I read Intuitive Eating in maybe 2014 or 2015. Then I remained working in the healthcare system, in a Preventive Cardiology clinic and a Bariatric Surgery clinic for several years. Health at Every Size® - Some Data In this book, Dr. Bacon makes several science-backed arguments that greatly question our current approach to weight loss. As we talk about in this podcast, the statistics are true that behavioral weight loss (e.g., diet and exercise) is really ineffective long-term. There is a lot of data in this book, but in short, we cover the fact that although people with higher body weight are often associated with higher health risk, this does not imply causation.

Episode 8. Today's episode is a conversation with Jenn Radke and it's a great one. Jennifer Radke is a certified body image coach, podcast host and fat activist. Her story includes decades on a diet cycle, two bodybuilding shows and a diagnosed eating disorder.  In her coaching practice, her focus is on giving chronic dieters practical tips to being able to improve the relationship they have with their bodies and get off the diet rollercoaster.  Her podcast, Fat Girl Book Club talks to people doing cool things in body acceptance spaces about a body acceptance book.  You can find her under her business name, I Wish I Were Me on Facebook and Instagram. Jenn's Body Liberation Journey She shares her journey of extreme weight loss cycling for 20 years and arguably having a diet-type mentality dating back to age 5 or 6. She ended this 3 years ago and started on her body liberation journey. I didn't know her back then but she is a happy, healthy, vibrant human doing work she loves. Important work in the body acceptance space. She reflects with us on the 2 decades of intense dieting, 18 formal diets (including Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and many more), 2 body building shows and an eating disorder diagnosis. What Motivates Change? Emotions, not Information. She talks about what made her eventually stop. Jenn and I reflected on the fact that although she loves books, research and information, that alone was not enough to get her to change. She had to have what she calls a "rock bottom moment" where her weight loss coach questioned her commitment to her "self-care" when she took two weeks to care for her uncle who was in hospice. She had read Health at Every Size by Dr. Lindo Bacon, but it was that moment that really made the difference for her. She talked about practical things she did like writing down all the things she gave to dieting, including all of the mental, emotional, and cognitive energy it took from her for years. She reflects on this if she is tempted to diet again. Only the Person in the Body Knows We discussed how most of the time, with the exception of more extreme behaviors, typically only the person in the body knows if their behavior is healthy or not. The judgment of this can go both ways. Someone can look at someone who is exercising 4 times per week and say "oh that's really healthy" or even in the other extreme, Jenn talks about how occasionally in the body acceptance space people can assume this means someone is still in the "diet mentality." We clarify that the true definition of autonomy is someone that's known by the person in the body alone and how the exact same behavior can be autonomous or controlled (by the diet mentality or "shoulds") and it's important not to judge a book by it's cover (in many, many ways). Practical Ways to Improve Your Body Image Jenn gives us some really practical strategies for improving body image. These include: Reflecting on your dieting triggers. Being aware of what these are (e.g., might be seeing a picture of yourself, or noticing you gained weight) can help you be prepared and know you have choices when you get that urge. Weight loss dieting isn't the only option.Curating your social media. Become aware of the messages you consume. Avoid following folks who make you feel bad about yourself.Buying comfortable clothes. Take Home Message: It's Great Over Here! Jenn exudes vibrancy and energy. Again, I didn't know her when she was dieting, but based on her story I venture a guess that she's bringing so much more of her authentic self to the world now that she isn't focused on rigid calorie counting and plan following and achieving a certain body in the name of "health."
