Today is our Independence Day! However, in the wake of the parade shooting in Highland Park in Chicago, President Joe Biden gives a speech, in which he briefly mentions the shooting, and let's just say it doesn't sound at all like one of sympathy, but rather of political motivation. Funny how this came shortly after he signed a gun safety bill into law after the Uvalde shooting. Why can't he just show sympathy to those family who lost loved ones? In this episode, Seth and Cal got the opportunity to sit down and talk to Amity Shales, who written a biography called Coolidge to talk about his Fourth of July Speech. Enjoy!

President Trump gave a Fourth of July Speech at Mount Rushmore, which provided a perfect spectacle for Presidential propaganda. Did the media get played by circulating these "patriotic" images, or was the publication more nuanced? In this episode of Vision Slightly Blurred, Sarah Jacobs and Allen Murabayashi also discuss controversy surrounding diversity at Magnum Photos and of members Martin Parr and Lua Ribeira, and finally some images of hot dogs to round out the holiday weekend.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott mandates masks right before the Fourth of July weekend. With more rules coming into the mix, is Texas turning into California? And with numbers spiking in cities on the border, why are we not taking border security more seriously? The mainstream media are freaking out over President Trump's Fourth of July speech at Mount Rushmore, calling it "dark and divisive." Not sure they were listening to the same speech the rest of America was listening to. Lastly, Californians took a stand against the ban on Fourth of July celebrations by lighting up the sky with fireworks! Good for you, Californians! The Great Gildersleeve (1941-1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catch phrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (10/22/40). He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods - looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread - sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened, and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lantz/message

Välkommen in i vår ibland skruvade värld.
"Great Gildersleeve"--originally broadcast July 2, 1952. "Fourth of July Speech." Gildersleeve wants to deliver the 4th of July speech very much, but Judge Hooker is determined to be the one who makes it. Willard Waterman stars as Gildersleeve.
