In episode 195 of Small Business Talk, host Cathy Smith explores the topic of employee motivation and retention with guest Karen Chaston, a former CFO. They highlight the critical role of treating employees as valuable assets and directly impacting a business's bottom line. The discussion centres around practical strategies to motivate and retain staff. One key strategy emphasised is giving employees a voice. Chaston and Smith stress the importance of actively seeking input from employees, involving them in decision-making processes, and genuinely listening to their ideas and suggestions. This approach empowers employees, making them feel valued and appreciated. Another vital strategy discussed is fostering interconnectedness among employees. A greater sense of purpose and teamwork can be cultivated by sharing information about each other's roles and how they contribute to the company's goals. This sense of unity can lead to higher employee engagement and commitment. Chaston and Smith also highlight the significance of empowering employees by providing ownership and autonomy over their work. Allowing employees to have a say in decision-making and design processes instils a sense of pride and responsibility. This level of involvement creates a stronger sense of investment in the company's success, resulting in increased motivation and job satisfaction. By implementing these strategies, small business owners can create a positive work culture that promotes employee retention and alignment with the company's values and vision. Ultimately, prioritising employee motivation leads to improved business performance and long-term success. In Episode 112 of The Business Habitat podcast, Sam is joined by International best-selling author, speaker and Beyond Loss Expert, Karen Chaston, to talk about understanding loss, the self, and how we can benefit from looking after ourselves first. In this inspiring and through-provoking conversation, Karen shares how a family tragedy was the catalyst for her own journey of self-discovery and the realisation of how few people really understand loss and how to move forward with it.As CFO of a publicly listed company, Karen knew that she was outwardly successful. She had the great salary, the house, the car, the family, and to the casual observer she seemed to have it all. But she was dying inside. She wanted to create a life that she loved, that she felt excited to wake up to every morning. Like so many others, Karen pushed down her feelings of dissatisfaction and compensated with avoidance tactics – too much shopping, too much eating and drinking, too much working – until something happened that changed her life forever. In this deeply personal account, Karen shares how the tragic loss of her 27 year old son in 2011 sent her into a tailspin that challenged every aspect of her life, before leading her to an epiphany and the realisation of her true passion and purpose.Over the course of the last eight years, Karen has come to appreciate how few people truly understand loss and the impact it can have in our lives. In this conversation, Karen explains that the loss of a loved one is not the only type of loss that we are likely to experience in our lifetime. There are more than forty different types of loss, including separation, divorce, financial and perhaps the most debilitating of all, loss of our own identity.Sam and Karen explore how the lack of “loss intelligence” in our society causes flow-on effects in leadership effectiveness, whether it be leadership of our teams, or more importantly, leadership of ourselves. Karen has written multiple books on the topic, most notably the best-selling “Demystifying Loss”, and through her business “The Chaston Centre” works with businesses to build stronger team dynamics through improved understanding of their people.Throughout this conversation, Sam and Karen encourage each of us to look deep within, so that we may move past the constant need to merely survive and find the way to thrive. Here at BlueprintHQ, we are here to help. We are super passionate about the professional services industry and supporting you with what you need. We are offering a short, sharp 15 minute consultation call to help you with this process. On this episode you'll hear how Karen went from the corporate world to starting to help people through her books and through the "Chaston Centre". The constant effort of juggling work, family, the big house and cars, and the stress created by all that was taking its toll on her even before tragedy struck when her son Dan (27), suddenly and very unexpectedly died at her back door in July 2011. Straight after Dan's funeral, Karen went straight back to her Chief Financial Officer's role at a Publicly Listed Company, working more, drinking more and eating more. "Look at all the things we had to do happen to become who we are today".Karen's story is inspiring. Karen lost her son Daniel in 2011 on the 12th of July. It was a day that was supposed to be a lazy Sunday. Yet, there he was, lying in a fetal position.Karen and her husband grieved differently. Now, how does this relate to Bulimia?Karen changed her life. Left the corporate life and helps people with loss, of which she explains there are over 40 types. It could be the loss of a person and the loss of self.I brought up shame. I know many of my clients and women and men who reach out to me bring this up. This is where Karen brings up the vibration, and shame is at the bottom. This is where she helps people increase the vibration, one step at a time. She owns the Chaston Centre, and helps people heal and create their "everyday better day life".Losing identity is not easy. And some of us with Bulimia, that is truly a part of it. As well as shame.Karen went on to discuss this "shame" and "vibration", and did share about two people she knew who had bulimia. One of them was a woman born in 1924. I could relate and did not share, however, my Aunt had bulimia as well. she was born in 1927. Bulimia existed that long ago. However we didn't have social media, or even back when there were magazines, this was never brought up. It took Karen Carpenter dying, and then Jane Fonda coming out for us to realize this. And sadly with Social Media, this is still a problem.I appreciate Karen for her story, sharing it, helping others overcome loss, even if it's finding yourself again, having lost yourself. To view this on YouTube go to Bleep Bulimia on YouTubeYou can reach Karen at www. thechastoncentre.com More about Karen: Karen ran on the corporate treadmill until the day the world came tumbling down on her head. The constant effort of juggling work, family, the big house and cars, and the stress created by all that was taking its toll on her even before tragedy struck when her son Dan (27), suddenly and very unexpectedly died at her back door in July 2011.Straight after Dan's funeral, Karen went straight back to her Chief Financial Officer's role at a Publicly Listed Company, working more, drinking more, and eating more. Loss can come in many different forms, some that we may not even recognise as loss events. And often, loss and grief cause us to turn to avoidance tactics because we aren't equipped to deal with the pain of those emotions. Today I am joined by Beyond Loss Mentor and co-founder of the Chaston Centre, Karen Chaston, to talk about moving beyond loss and creating more meaning in our lives. Karen shares her own story of loss and how she came to help others to work through painful emotions themselves. In this episode, we talk about the different kinds of loss, some tools to begin moving through a loss event, and how to support someone you know who is dealing with loss themselves. If you'd like to connect with Karen visit TheChastonCentre.com If you found value in this episode please share it with one person who would benefit from what we talked about as well.

So I mean, I don't know how it's going to be on the same stage with these people because I think, I love public speaking but I still sometimes get nervous, so anyway. Not the major focus for today, but I can't help it, I'm off script sometimes. Anyway. She's also an author for eight books, probably more now, and working on some more, and numerous ebooks as well as online TV show host and podcaster. MPF Discussion with Karen ChastonThe Journey to Becoming My Own Best Friend with Karen Chaston About Karen Karen brings a unique perspective; extensive business experience and hard-earned wisdom that she wished were available to her when she needed them. As a C.P.A. and former corporate Chief Financial Officer, Karen ran on the corporate treadmill until the day her world came tumbling down. Karen Chaston - God Smacked to Live Love by Design, after finding her deceased son on her porch one morning, Karen's life was forced to change. Not long ago, I was living a life that many perceived as being very successful. I had the high flying corporate career, the family, the house, the car, and the overseas holidays. Though in reality (and hindsight) I was very unfulfilled, burnt out, under-appreciated, wasting money, and using unhealthy food and drink quick fixes to get through the day. Karen Chaston
Karen Chaston was CFO of an Australian publicly listed company, so you would think that life would be pretty sweet. After all, isn’t rising to the top in your chosen field, what defines you as being successful? Many people think it is. For Karen, the constant effort of juggling work, family, the big house and cars, and the stress was taking its toll on her even before tragedy struck when her son unexpectedly and suddenly died at a young age. After a break, Karen went straight back to work, working more, eating more and drinking even more, just to get through her very long days. It took another 15 months when she chose redundancy, which allowed Karen to ‘wake up’ and take a long conscious loving breath. One that allowed her to sit back and evaluate exactly where she was in life and where she wanted to be - a good life lesson for anyone suffering stress and doing tasks they don’t enjoy doing. By learning new concepts, slowly her awareness changed, and Karen realised not only how diseased she was, the horrible part was, all her corporate peers were the same. They all were dog-eat-dog, in survival mode where it truly was survival of the fittest, though physically, none were physically fit. Finally, by listening to her inner knowing that the ‘Live Love By Design’ brand was founded, with Karen creating online and off-line courses, trainings and writing paperback and e-books. Listen to this podcast, as Karen shares many tips and suggestions plus 3 of her Live Love Gems, one of which is, you don’t have to spend your health to get your wealth.
